Getting a single ethernet cable ran.

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 02:03 PM PDT

Our router is in the front of our house and my bedroom is in the rear I just want a single Ethernet cable run from our router to my room with a single drop to go into my computer. Approximately how much would this cost? and will just any old electrician set this up. Im currently on a powerline and tried to setup moca and it would not work for the life of me.

Looking for modem and router for spectrum internet speed up to 400mbps

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 08:05 PM PDT

I currently use a modem/router combo that is up to 50mbps. I've had it for years and I'm looking to upgrade it to handle my current internet speed.

I did some research and I'm looking to get a separate modem and router.

I'm looking for something(or somethings) that can handle multiple devices (5+ at the most. WiFi) and good wifi range that is still powerful. As long as I also have one ethernet connection for my desktop that'll be great (I'm assuming all modems have this).

Something that isn't too high priced.

And can I combine different brands together?

    New home install Questions

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 03:28 AM PDT

Building a new home and want to wire for Ethernet. I think I'm going to put my server rack in the corner of the basement next to my garage. This means I'm going to need runs of 60-75 ft for roughly 8-10 locations on the opposite side of the house than the server.

    So my questions are:

    1. Do I run 1-2 lines and get an 8 port switch? Would need at least 4 Poe ports (2 cameras and 2 APs. Or do I just run all of the lines?

    2. What cable do I get? Do I just run Cat5, 5e, 6, 6a, 7? I doubt I get faster than 500 mbps internet.

    3. Anything else I should do or plan for?

    Thanks.

Best Websites for Finding ISPs in My Area

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 07:37 PM PDT

I'm currently with a pretty bad local ISP, and I've looked at varying websites that require me to fill in my address and such to find the best ISP's available in my area. Some of it just seems unrealistic as I've heard most providers try to avoid competition and like four of the biggest names will pop up. What websites do you guys recommend for finding better ISP's in my area?

My local Cosmo Wireless offers a single plan of up to 30 MBPS, my house only gets up to 2.5 MBPS, even in the middle of the night. Obviously want to find someone else given just a single plan of 30 MBPS isn't all that great anyway for the price of almost $50 a month. I live in a rural part of Southeast Missouri if that's any help.

PPPOE + VLAN tagging w/ managed switch.

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 11:30 AM PDT

Im trying to get IPv6 working with my router.

I have FTTP, with an ONT that has separate WAN and TEL ports.

The ISP router works without issue, so it's definitely enabled on my line, but the aftermarket manufacturer says it does not support VLAN tagging.

They suggested putting a managed switch in between the WAN ports of my ONT and router. I have a Netgear GS305E.

I connect via PPPoE, with an expected VLAN ID of 101. My ONT is completely locked down, so I can't configure that.

I've tried enabling advanced 802.1Q VLAN, setting the PVID of ports 1+2 to 101, setting port one as tagged, and 2 as untagged. P1 is WAN from ONT, P2 is off to the router. I set the port memberships of P1 and 2 to group 101, and remove them from the default group 1.

However, this doesn't work. The router doesn't even see that a PPPoE connection is available.

Am I understanding T and U as being, T= traffic coming into this port is tagged as 101, and add tags to traffic leaving this port with 101.

U = remove tags coming into and out of this port?

Does anyone know if I'm configuring it incorrectly?

    Thanks!

    Asus RT-AC88U / Arris SB6190 / Comcast ISP - Slow speed

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 05:40 PM PDT

I have had this equipment for 3 years without a single issue, consistently getting 300+mb speeds. On 6/17 Skype and Teams calls were pixelated and I was getting 80% packet loss in games (Modern Warfare). Ping was fine (30-40 range) but the game and video calls were unplayable. Ran a speed test and was getting 8-20mb download speeds. I am paying for 300mb speeds from Comcast.

    Speedtest.net behavior:

Previous firmware (6/17 - 6/22): Download speeds would hover around 8-20mb. 20-25mb upload

New Firmware downloaded 6/23 (3.0.0.4.385_20585): Download speeds would shoot up to 200-300mb instantly (like it did before this issue) but then fall all the way down to 10-15mb speeds. sometimes even below 10mb. Upload speed was constantly at 20-25mb as usual.

    What I have done:

Updated Asus Router firmware to 3.0.0.4.385_20585

Factory reset SB6190 modem multiple times

    - Can I update firmware for the modem? I went into the Arris SB6190 settings page (192.168.100.1) but could not find anything in regards to updating

Reset Asus Router to default factory settings multiple times

I have the most recent drivers for my PC network controller (Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller.

    - PC Motherboard = Asus x570 TUF Gaming Wifi

Comcast tech support (2 different reps) confirmed the line into my apartment is perfect as they were getting 250+mb speeds in. No outages reported. No scheduled maintenance of any kind. Not nearing my monthly data limit of 1024GB.

Bypassed my router: Went directly into my PC from the modem. Speedtests were all over the place. The first 2 I did I got 200-300mb down, 20-25 upload. The next 3 I did after that, I got between 15 and 50mb down, 20-25 upload. Similar behavior where it would shoot up to 200-300mb and then fall drastically down to the 15-50mb range.

I have not changed any settings on my modem, router or windows (to my knowledge) in 3 years, and everything was working perfectly. Looking for any help or troubleshooting guidance from the community.

    Thank you

Are 2.4GHz and 5GHz speeds noticeable?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 05:14 PM PDT

Sorry for the noob question, but I have a router that's only single band and my modem is dual band already. I'm not using the router yet and currently using two separate SSIDs (1 for 2.4GHz and the other for 5GHz) using my modem only. I was wondering if it's better that I plug in the router but only have a 2.4GHz band. Is there a noticeable speed difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz? There will be at most 8 devices connected.

    Thanks!

Planning out a home network (3500ft^2, 2acres), need help

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 04:48 PM PDT

    Need help:

    Project Summary/Goals

    1. Bought medium-sized American house on 2 acres.
    2. Internet access "originates" in a closet on one side of the house and wifi from router does not reach other side.
    3. Necessary to cover house with wifi. Thinking centrally-located ceiling-mounted WAP, POE ideal.
    4. Would be pretty nice to get strong backyard wifi. Possibly exterior WAP that can do the wifi roaming/smooth handoff thing?
    5. In future want to get Internet out to building in back of property. Unidirectional antenna from house or run cable/fiber. Future project, not important now.
    6. Multiple kids, in future will probably need lots of wifi when they become older for media streaming, etc. Thinking keep wired connections to room for now.

    Verbose Essay Format

Just bought a house. Trying to lay out network effectively. On one side of the house, by bedrooms, there is a coat closet with cat5 cable run into it and a power outlet with two plugs on the top shelf.

Moved into this house with just my cable modem + router (asus rt66u). Signal on other side of house (playroom, guest bedroom) is pretty weak. For now, I have a cheap repeater I already owned at the midpoint so in the guest area you can still get wifi. No smooth handoff from one to the other.

Owner also did some weird electrical work where an exterior security light on that side of the house has no off switch because he'd put in power with no off switch intending to use an exterior-rated wifi light. But like I said, wifi does not reach that side very well.

One story house, great attic access, I'm looking to do the networking in the house "right" (each room has an ethernet jack previous owner put in that connects to router in that closet).

First thing's first, I'm going to put a ceiling-mounted WAP in the "middle" of the house that should be able to blanket the whole house in wifi. I was looking at one by Ubiquity that is POE.

Cable connection enters that closet. I'm thinking I should then run that to a POE switch in the closet, and then run cable through the attic to the POE Ubiquity WAP.

The WAP provides wifi to the whole house, so the rt66u becomes unnecessary except that I use the VPN feature.

We're on 2 acres with a big building in the back could be a workshop for me or a chill room for when my buddies come over, say to watch tennis w/o bothering the family or something. We have a deck in back that gets great sunlight and I'd like to work from home there, so wifi covering that area would be nice.

Beyond that, no real restrictions. Not going to go crazy with unnecessary enterprise stuff, but beyond that I'm not pinching pennies.

I want to do this right so that I can have wired networking to the rooms still (stream media off file server via wired connections to smart TVs or small headless thin client HTPCs or something)

I hope to be able to still VPN into the network but want my VPN server on the edge like my current router provides.

Might add POE security cameras or something in medium-term, so probably don't want to buy 4-port POE switch and need to replace it in a year with 8/16/32-port. Can't imagine 32 port would ever be necessary.

Current cabling is not POE and since terminates in each room at a wall jack, probably would plug into TV or computer, so POE not necessary for these.

If they use regular switch and POE use POE switch, they are on separate networks that cannot talk to each other. This is not ideal. If one of the POEs is the WAP for the whole house, this splits the house's computers into two separate networks that can't talk without a router as well, right?

Hypothetical Solution I would like feedback for

    • cable modem
      • small router
      • non-POE switch
        • through attic to all rooms of house terminating at wall jack for HTPCs/PCs/smart TVs (this part is already installed by previous owner)
      • POE switch
        • centrally-located ceiling-mounted POE WAP as primary home wifi
        • (future idea) POE security cameras
      • media server to serve non-POE connections + home wifi through POE WAP
      • (nice to have) exterior WAP in backyard for outdoor work from home
      • (crazy future idea) wired connection running to back of property, in meantime probably unidirectional wifi from home beamed out there

Thoughts? Guidance? Here is a hastily-drawn diagram of the property. Enter property from bottom. There is house. Star is where networking "closet" is with existing incoming cable connection and outgoing ethernet cabling that runs through attic to all rooms of house.

Blue is pool with deck around it. Yellow is back building.

Apologies for incoherence, toddler is screaming for attention and she's going crazy bc of COVID social distancing. It's taken me like two weeks to even make this post. Humbling asking for help.

Total noob, can you recommend how to share my family plan with my mother upstairs?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 02:24 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am very computer-challenged, and I wanted to accomplish this goal which I'm sure you'll all find very easy.

I live in a house that includes an appartment upstairs. My mother is moving in next week. I would like to share my internet upstairs. What I have found so far are:

    1) Power ethernet adapter. This should work but my question is, the electricity in the appartment is separate than my home. So I guess this wouldn't work?

    2) If I take a RJ45 cable from my modem and connect it in the appartment upstairs to an old wireless modem in AP mode, that would work too?

Ideally I would like the option 1 because I don't have to drill a hole, but I'm just so lost and there's a million things I need to do before she comes in.

    Thanks so much!!

Problem I've been fighting with for over a year: one of my devices can't seem to maintain an internet connection.

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 08:19 PM PDT

For over a year now, my phone (samsung gs9+) refuses to maintain a connection to the internet using my home wifi. The connection to wifi is always maintained, but internet access cuts out. The "fix" I've been using is as easy as either swapping to 2.4 GHz from 5 or vice versa. It's like my phone forgets to stay connected unless I remind it, it's very frustrating. My status bar shows the wifi with an exclamation point and my wifi says "internet may not be available" every ti.e it occurs. My ISP for home internet is Charter and my phone is from US Cellular if that matters.

    Weird quirks:

-- I am the only person in my household who has this problem with their phone. (Worth noting that I'm the only one with a gs9+, everyone else is note 10 or iphone)

-- My computer and xbox do not have this issue.

-- This issue is only occurring at my house. College campus, friends houses, restaurants, ect. All have wifi that give me no troubles.

-- The cut occurs fairly consistently a few minutes after connecting.

-- using a wired connection from my phone to the router directly (usb type 3 to ethernet adapter) seems to maintain a sold connection, but now I need to deal with a heavy wire hanging out of my phone. So this is not a practical solution.

-- The wifi cuts seem to not occure (most days) late at night around 1-4 am.

    Solutions I've tried:

    -- Restarted the router.

    -- Installed a new router.

    -- Updating the router.

    -- Updating my phone.

-- Used router software to prioritize my phone.

-- Moved router into my room to strengthen connection.

-- Using a VPN vs not using a VPN has no effect.

Everything I've tried has not made a difference. At this point it's just frustrating for me to have to go on my 4g and burn 5Gbs of data a month while quarantined, all because my wifi doesn't like my phone... a solution to this would be greatly appreciated.

    Smart TV is a hog

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 07:57 PM PDT

My parents own a Smart TV that takes over the internet connection for other devices, more importantly my PS4 which is connected by LAN cable. I even went to the extent of purchasing a new router and setting the smart tv's priority to extremely low, yet I still experience lag and high ping when it is in use. Any advice given, I will gladly take!

2 SOHO, Disable NAT on downstream Router?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 07:41 PM PDT

Hey guys I needed a switch so I am using a netgear prosafe fvs318g gigabit router as a switch. I connected the secondary "switch" router to my primary switch by linking their lan ports and leaving the WAN port on the "Switch" router empty. I also disabled DHCP and gave it a static address outside of the DHCP scope that my primary router is handing out. The last thing I am not sure about is NAT on the "switch" router, do I disable it on my "switch" router since I have NAT on my primary router?

Access Point Placement in 2 story house.

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 07:22 PM PDT

I am getting a Unifi Access Point set up for the east side of my house and had a question on placement. I plan on placing it underneath my garage (which is also beneath all 3 of my bedrooms) and intend on using it for the IoT devices in my bedroom (my phone gets horrible connection on the 5ghz connection but does fairly well on the 2.4ghz so I wanted to increase the signal) and use it for the garage camera and a couple outdoor camera. Will speeds be affected by having the access point in my garage or should I run it to one of the bedrooms? I intend on using it for all the devices on that end of the house (tv, phones, other IoT devices) amd wanted to see how much single loss (if any) I would experience by not running it to the master bedroom. I live in an older house built in the 60s and the garage is connected to my basement.

    Need help with mesh system

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 03:32 PM PDT

Hello all, i'm currently trying to find a solution for my parent's internet problems. The internet randomly drops occasionally, and doesn't cover the entire house very well. It's a 3,000 sqft home with two floors. We just got a new router/modem combo. However, i've read that those aren't ideal. I've looked into powerline and wifi extenders, but the general consensus is that these aren't ideal. There's only one coax port in the house, and no ethernet wall jacks. The problem is that the coax port is in a corner of the house on the second story, and doesn't reach very far.

It was recommended to me by a Best Buy employee to return our new router/modem combo and simply get a separate modem and mesh router system. I've been trawling this subreddit and a few other resources for advice and am getting some mixed answers. Would you all say this is the way to go? If so, what devices would you recommend? Budget isn't too much of an issue, but our current plan is for 200+ mbps with Spectrum, and we're thinking of upgrading that too. While budget isn't a big issue, at the same time i'd like to avoid paying an too much for diminishing returns on speed. So whatever equipment recommendations that could accommodate those speeds would be great. Thanks!

Possible to use powerline as wifi extender?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 07:11 PM PDT

I recently purchased Netgear powerline 1000 bc one of my rooms wifi connection is poor.

It works but the powerline uses a diff wifi network. This is frustrating to always switch wifi manually when I enter the room.

Is it possible to set the powerline to be like a access point ? So my router is the one who assigns IP addresses and uses the same wifi network?

Is it as easy as changing the powerline wifi network ID and password as the same as my router's?

    Thanks.

Moving and getting Xfinity - need help setting up a home network

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 07:06 PM PDT

    Background
Moving in a week and swapping from Spectrum to Xfinity (as the former isn't available in my area). I'd rather not fork over the $14/mo xFi rental fee unless a home network would exceed $336. I've read the purchasing guide on this sub but still have questions / need advice.

    Home Setup
Modem/router would be set up in one bedroom with a wired PC, and a second ethernet cable would run across the hall to the other bedroom for a PC. A PS4, Xbox One, and 2 NSwitches would ideally WiFi connect from the lower floor. We both work from home and frequently stream / online game in the evenings. A phone, laptop, and a third NSwitch would sometimes be WiFi connected by a frequent guest.

    Xfinity Plan
We're getting a 200Mbps download speed plan, luckily with no data-cap due to our location.

    Question 1
If there are cable hookups in both bedrooms, is there another way to provide a wired connection (using an ethernet switch?) to a PC in the room without the router/modem? We cannot drill holes in the apartment, and would prefer to not have a cord in the hallway connecting the bedrooms if possible.

    Question 2
Overall- what do I buy? Do I need a separate router/modem or is a combo acceptable for our needs? BestBuy support recommended a NETGEAR Nighthawk C7000-100NAS for $189.99 that meets the DOCSIS 3.0 suggestion from the purchasing guide, but Xfinity's compatible device guide states it only gets up to 120Mbps on the 2.4GHz connection. Do I need to worry about that when the device's 5Ghz WiFi connection gets 496Mbps? I'm not sure if I trust either BestBuy nor Xfinity (nor any paid-placement blog guide) to recommend me something agenda-free.

If it wasn't clear- i'm officially in the stage of data-paralysis and just need someone to dumb this down for me. I can provide more information if needed to make an informed suggestion. A big thank you in advance to anyone that takes the time to comment and help.

Recently I've installed a moca network in my home with two gocoax moca adapters, a moca certified splitter, and a POE filter and it was working fine till the last couple of days. With the moca adapter in between the modem and router setup, it has led to instances where the internet goes out, leading me have to restart the modem or router or even remove the moca adapterfor not receiving a connection from the wall. How do I fix? Would appreciate some help.

    Setting up a second router

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 06:51 PM PDT

So today I got Fibre installed into my house but they had to bring it on one specific side of the house. On that side of the house I am getting between 300-500 Mbps download but the signal obviously drops off half way through the house. I originally had a Powerline extender but that is now being capped at around 50-60 which I never knew as I only ever got around 15 😂

I was searching around and was thinking of 2 things to boost the Speed to the other side of the house. I have a spare router and a long CAT6 cable from an old friend of mine.

    1. Connect the CAT6 cable into the switch next to the original router and run it to the other side of the house through the attic or something similar and setup a brand new router
    2. Connect the CAT6 cable into the original router and run it to the other router and set that up. Here lies the issue though. I use hard-line for my work computer that is on the other side of the house from the original router and setting up another router via 2 from my knowledge means it is just setup as a wireless access point and cannot be hard wired.

Would it be possible to connect the CAT6 cable into the WAN/Ethernet port on the 2nd router and just set that up as another access point or would their be conflicting between the two??

Also if I set it up via the two routers what is the drop off rate in speed to expect?

Sorry if I seem uneducated but this is all quite new to me and I am trying to learn.

Other ways of extending the WiFi via the cable and router would be appreciated also! I'm looking to extend 5GHz across my whole house without spending anymore money

    Thank you

Router in repeater mode for IP desk phone

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 06:49 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I have been working from home and am trying to set up my desk phone. It is a Mitel 5330 IP Phone and my IT department said it has to be plugged into the router directly because it is PoE. I work upstairs and the router is downstairs, so wiring it directly to the router is not an option. I have a router that I would like to use as a repeater (or extender or maybe a bridge? I am not sure) upstairs so I can plug the phone in, but I have no clue how to configure everything. I am not the homeowner so I'm not able to make major changes like running wire through the wall, etc.

The router downstairs is a Nighthawk X4S R7800. The router upstairs is a Nighthawk R7000. I also have a PoE adapter because I wasn't sure if the router supported PoE. Other family members use the wifi as well, so I need to make sure that my configuration won't mess with their speed or bandwidth.

Can someone please walk me through the best solution? How do I configure the upstairs router- as a repeater or bridge mode?

Asus Zenfone not working on 2ghz wifi?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 06:39 PM PDT

I've got an AT&T Arris router with fiber connection, using IP passthrough to hand everything off to an RB2011 Mikrotik router. Took some learning but I've gotten it working pretty well. However, an Asus Zenfone 3 is having major wifi issues; It has to be right next to the RB2011 just to get a weak connection. All other devices on the network have no issues, and this phone works on other networks. I re-enabled the Arris' wifi, and the issue goes away unless I disable 5GHz, and then it's the same problem as the RB. I noticed this older RB2011 doesn't have 5GHz, do I have any options? I can't find anything on Google or the phone's settings. Thanks!

    Kr00k: manufacturers who have updated

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 06:30 PM PDT

I've been disappointed with TP-Link support for a while. I'm not surprised but I hoped they would be a bit better. I've got a AC3150 which hasn't had a firmware update in almost 3 years. The hardware is fine, more than fast enough and it's stable. Probably better than any router I've ever owned in this respect.

The big but here is: TP-Links is a big user of Broadcom chipsets and I can't find anything on their forums about firmware updates for Kr00k for any of their routers, not even the newer ones. I'd love to hear from anybody whose router manufacturer is doing a good job on security patches for their routers, particularly the routers which are getting a bit old now.

    Wifi speed very Irratic

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 06:19 PM PDT

    Hi All

For about the last month or so my home wifi has been quite erratic, sometimes around certain timeframes of the day or just plan impossible to work with. I am using my computer from the attic as thats where my room is but their is no difference in speed or connection when im sitting in front of it. We use a Netgear router and when I ping it I get a range of 40-2000+ ms back within the same packet check. I am at a loss for what to do right now and dont know whether or not to just replace the router or call our ISP to see what's up. Any help would be appreciated as this would make working from home much easier on myself without having to constantly reconnect or get kicked out of sessions due to connection issues.
