Does running Pfsense in a server VM make sense, or should it have its own dedicated box? Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:44 AM PDT Basically, title. I'm looking at moving off the Verizon router I have to a custom setup, and my first concern is obviously a firewall. Are there any concerns in puting a firewall in a VM, or will it work the same as having it on its own box? [link] [comments] |
I'm getting Chariton Valley fiber for the first time and I don't know what type of fiber it will be? Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:28 PM PDT So, I'm not a network expert I just know that the speeds are supposed to be faster then what I have but I heard there's different versions of fiber (FTTN,FTTC, and FTTP) does this mean I won't actually get the speeds that are advertised? Also, heres the website https://cvfiber.cvalley.net/ [link] [comments] |
Deciding Between 60mbps and 120mbps Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:24 AM PDT I'm moving in a few days and I'm trying to decide on my internet plan. I stream Netflix and Youtube constantly and I play several online games such as Overwatch, LoL, GTAo and NMS. Is 60/10mbps ($50 CAD +tax) enough for this or should I spring for the 120/20mbps ($60 CAD +tax)? Edit: Prices and upload [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:30 PM PDT Modem not powering on? My modem (arris tm1602) has been working fine for 2+ years and all of a sudden just stopped working. It doesn't power on at all- even with resets and troubleshooting. It usually lights up, but doesn't anymore. Anyone had this happen to them? Any ideas or solutions? I assume the other option is to switch out the modem for a new one. But that can take a while. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2020 04:58 PM PDT I've set up a FTP server on one of my PC's. Nothing is stored on the PC that is at risk. Its just a play experiment more than anything. So FTP is running, port 20 and 21 is forwarded and when i log into the FTP when on the same network, everything works fine. The trouble is when i try to log into the FTP from outside the network. I've tried on my android, ios and a laptop. They all say i connect but i cannot see any files or folders. I've disabled the windows firewall and still have the same troubles. Re-Securing Network after Possible Breach Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:17 PM PDT Hey all! Hope everybody is staying safe. Hoping some well informed people can help me out here! For background, me and my roommate live in a big city and are both working from home. We have a simple modem + router combo (Motorola) and little experience with home network security. A few days ago I noticed some issues with the internet and went onto the admin console for the first time in a few months. While our Wifi password is relatively secure (10-12 characters with symbols, numbers, etc) I was surprised to have found the username and password to the admin console had been reset to the default and that some of the settings had been changed. I don't fully understand these settings and so while it's possible that during our last reset we forgot to reset the username and password for the console, neither me nor my roommate would have messed with the default settings. I noticed some settings had changed - including WAN blocking was turned OFF despite the factory default being ON. I reset the router, changing the SSID, Password, and admin console usernames and passwords — but am wondering about 3 things in particular: 1) Given the network might have been compromised over a few months, what is the likely / potential damage that could have been done? Is the WAN blocking turned OFF an issue? I've been phished and have had hacking attempts on me before so I'm a bit wary of the potential damage. 2) Is resetting the router and changing the passwords sufficient to be secure starting now? Is there anything else we should do to investigate potential issues from the past couple of months? 3) Are there any additional measures we can take to reasonably increase security? We're not high profile politicians or anything, but ideally would want a system that is secure from hackers and the like. Thank you all so much in advance for your help! Happy to reply or DM with any additional details of helpful. [link] [comments] |
Ethernet cable and WiFi same speed? Posted: 30 Jun 2020 04:51 PM PDT I have a late 2013 macbook pro where i normally connect to wifi. My wifi connection is about 132mbps download speed according to Ookla. I just recently bought a Cat-8 cable and a dongle for my macbook to connect it to an Ethernet cable to get faster speeds. But low and behold they are both around the same speed, 132mbps. Whats the reason for this? I know Ethernet is supposed to be faster. EDIT- Tested the downstairs router with the cable on my macbook, i got 866MBPS...Still not sure why my upstairs router isnt the same? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:04 PM PDT I got an open box Edgerouter X from eBay last week and fired it up. The lights are on, but nobody's home. No ping response, no IPs being assigned, no web UI. It's awake but vegetative. I open the instructions (when my wife's not looking), follow the Runtime Reset (while powered on), nothing. So I run the Power-on Reset (hold reset button while plugging in the power), nothing. So I message the seller, and he quickly sends me another one, same stock (open box) presumably. Same result. Reset it both ways just like the first unit. Nothing. Now, I've used Unifi WAPs several times and I'm familiar with SOHO level networking. I'm pretty sure that I should be getting something digitally from this thing out of the box. So am I crazy or is this thing busted? [link] [comments] |
Looking for advice on my proposed setup, router or switch? Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:41 PM PDT I want to setup the following in a comms cabinet: - Ubiquiti Networks EdgeRouter 12, 10-Port Gigabit Router with PoE - 2 x Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Lite wireless access points throughout the house This would be connecting into my ISP router which i'd be configuring a DMZ on and hoping that means I can use the ISP router wifi as a seperate guest network My question is should i go for a 10 port router or a smaller and then connect it to a switch. Are there any advantages to either outside of whichever is more cost effective? [link] [comments] |
How to isolate 1 machine on network Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:41 PM PDT I'm working from home and want to isolate my work machine from the rest of my network. It's a desktop with an Ethernet connection. Everything I've read about VLANs seems like a massive headache so I'm wondering if there's a simpler option? I have a Netgear R6400 running DDWRT [link] [comments] |
Ethernet speed capped at 100mbps through wall jacks Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:01 PM PDT Hey everyone. So I am trying to figure out why my Ethernet speed is capped at 100mbps when using the Ethernet jacks In my house. The jacks were wired in 2005, so I have a feeling it might be wired with Cat5. I use a gigabit Ethernet switch and if I plug my laptop directly into it then I receive 1gbps speed. Only when I use the wall jacks is it capped at 100. What are, if any, some easier and simpler alternatives to achieve 1gbps speed through the jacks without completely rewiring them all? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Bizarre issue with 5 GHz WiFi that causes it to become unresponsive Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:41 PM PDT Tl;dr: 5 GHz WiFi keeps dropping connectivity, 2 GHz works fine. It happens everytime I do anything to "saturate the bandwidth" on the 5 GHz radio. Have the same issue with two different routers, so the router is most likely not the problem. I have this really strange issue with my dual-band home WiFi router that causes only the 5 GHz radio to suddenly become unresponsive - all devices connected to the 5 GHz network lose connectivity, while the 2 GHz radio works just fine. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the 5 GHz WiFi usually solves the problem; but needless to say, it is extremely annoying. I'm using a Netgear R7000P Nighthawk AC2300, but as I'll describe later on, the router is most likely not the culprit. At first I thought the cause was completely random, until I was able to predictably reproduce the issue by running a speed test on speedtest.net. Every single time I run a speed test, the 5 GHz WiFi invariably freezes - until I disconnect the device that initiated the speed test. Disconnecting other devices doesn't help, it has to be the one that caused the network to freeze. It was then that I remembered that I had run into the same problem while downloading games on Steam, and realized that it probably has something to do with what happens when devices try to use up a lot of bandwidth on the 5 GHz radio. Now, before I got the Netgear, I had a TP-Link Archer C20 AC750, and I had the exact same issue there too which seems to suggest that the router is not the issue. I have already upgraded the firmware on my router to try and fix the issue but that hasn't helped. My internet connection is PPPoE, and I read somewhere that the default MTU of 1500 on most devices can cause issues with the 1492 that is ideal for PPPoE, but setting the MTU hasn't helped either. Has anyone seen something similar before? Any ideas on where I should look to fix the problem? [link] [comments] |

Issues with the Netgear R7000P router and online games, looking for a solution Posted: 30 Jun 2020 09:22 PM PDT It's been widely known for a while that the Netgear R7000P router doesn't play well with online games that requires a lot of packet updates. I've been having constant issues with Elder Scrolls Online (which is disconnecting me from the server every 2 hours sharp) and most of all iRacing for which I'm getting disconnected after 5 minutes. I'm on a wired connection to the router as well. There's a huge thread on the iRacing forums from the staff in which they opened a support ticket with Netgear, had multiple screenshare sessions with them and received multiple beta firmwares to test without finding a solution and having Netgear close the ticket entirely. Per the testing done, this issue affects every Nighthawk routers and there seems to be no solution in sight. QoS doesn't solve the problem either, as it seems the problem comes from the internal firewall and can't be disabled. I'm asking you what solution would be best for me going forward. Here's some thoughts:
My connection is 400 down/50 up and my current setup is a modem (ISP provided) connected to the R7000P and a network switch connected to it to provide wired connections to my main PC and 2 work laptops. [link] [comments] |
I want to replace my Xfinity router, but I also need to handle my home phone line Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:58 AM PDT Hi, I was about to get the ASUS RT-AC86U router to replace my Comcast Xfinity router. However, my Xfinity router also handles my home phone #. Is there a way to handle the phone without a router or maybe a different router that also handles the home phone line? Thanks! Looking to replace xfinity combo modem/router Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:48 PM PDT Xfinity combo modem/router is hot garbage but also our account is somehow broken and you have to port forward online at the xfi website now and it won't even show up. Have called support 5 times in the last 6 months but it's time to just sink some money into our own equipment and stop paying to rent their broken garbage. We run 300mb/s down rn but would like to be able to get a line in from them at 1gb/s in the not so distant future since it is offered in our area. Router should be equivalent or better in range. Price range ideally less than $200 for both but could probably swing $300. [link] [comments] |

Getting slightly slower speeds on ethernet compared to Wi-Fi. Should I get a Cat6? Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:30 PM PDT Getting 200 down over wifi and 150 down over ethernet. Will it help me? My Windows PC is on gigabit internet with a Cat5e cable. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:42 AM PDT Hi all – I just discovered the whole phenomenon of having your own DNS server, and my mind is blown. So I read through some of the threads on "Pihole" DNS servers, and I have some questions. How do you update the DNS server data? From what I understand, DNS has different layers or tiers. What tier or whatever would the home-based server be? And what kind of data updates do you need to arrange? Is there a cache? How much storage do you need? So a home server would be faster than any provider, including Cloudflare right? Could you run a DNS server on a PC? I mean the same PC you use as a PC, just having a DNS server run locally, basically an app or maybe in a VM. How much overhead would it be? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Bufferbloat on BGW 210-700 (AT&T Fiber) Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:25 PM PDT I've been trying to find ways to fix lag on my network. I found on dslreports.com that I have a C rating for bufferbloat (my speeds are 120+ for both download and upload). However, I have the exact same router and an 80/20 connection at a different place, and I get an A bufferbloat rating over there. Both routers are BGW 210-700's. Is there a way to fix it or is this router not good enough to fix this issue? I know there is stuff like QoS and fq_codel, etc.. but I can't get a different router unfortunately. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:56 PM PDT Being that the tablet is only wireless and my business internet is ethernet exclusive, I've tried two things.

Cable with 500 mbps vs fiber with 100mbps for competitive gaming Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:46 PM PDT I am looking into fiber internet for competitive gaming, the problem is the highest speed in my area for fiber is around 100mbps, I currently have 500mbps on cable, but while gaming many random ping spikes will occur for long periods of time, making games unplayable, im not sure if the 100mbps is good enough or if i should just stick with cable, also if the ping is solvable or if it's just my area being concentrated. Internet disconnects every so often, replacing router and modem did nothing. Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:32 PM PDT I was experiencing frequent disconnections from my internet (on all devices, both ethernet and wifi) in which my network would be completely inaccessible and unavailable to connect to. This would happen on a frequency of several times a day. I upgraded to a new router+modem but I'm still experiencing the same issue. However, the fix is exactly the same, requiring me to unplug my router and replug it. Yet the problem is not isolated to my router. I've tried connecting directly to my modem while in the middle of one of these outages and it still fails to connect me to the internet. I've updated all my drivers for everything that I could find, I've tried tinkering with my router settings, but none of it seems to mitigate the issue. Does anyone know what problem I might be having and how to resolve it? [link] [comments] |
ATT Fiber and I get 14mbps on my desktop via wifi & using powerline Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:25 PM PDT So fiber is wonderful if you use wifi right next to it or two doors down - not 3 rooms over. That sucks - but I can kinda live with it. What is frustrating is that the powerline gear I have (Netgear) also only gets me to 14mbps average. It takes 35min to download a 1.5gb game. Testing my router - direct connection via an ethernet cable gives my laptop 14mbs as well, versus the wifi at ~400mbps. I have no clue what is happening, help? [link] [comments] |
Slower wired connection than wireless. Why and how do I solve it? Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:24 PM PDT Anyone know why my wired connection is considerably slower than than my wifi. I have Xfinity's xfi with the ISP provided XB6 gateway and I'm paying for 600mbps max (I know I wouldn't be getting this fast). On wifi Im getting around 350Mbps down with a few devices online. On wired Im getting 70-80Mbps down. I used a 3ft shielded cat6 cable therefore eliminating signal degradation and electrical interference and an Anker ethernet to usb adapter certified for gigabit speeds plugged into the usb 3 port on my laptop and its a newer model so that should also be rated for gigabit speeds through usb 3. Also tested on my desktop with onboard gigabit lan and tested again but this time connected to the gateway with a brand new ASUS aftermarket 10 gigabit network card, used same cable still getting 70-80Mbps down. Also made sure all the drivers are up to date both on the adapter, the usb drivers on both computers and the network card. I am not currently on a vpn and its connected directly to XB6, I even used both RJ45 jacks that are available on the gateway. So what's goin on? Is it the gateway itself? If it's the gateway itself would I be able to provide my own modem/router combo or provide my own and switch plans or would they send me one that will solve the problem? [link] [comments] |
