Posted: 24 Jun 2020 09:23 AM PDT I have a large mess of cables shoved in the office behind the TV stand currently. It "works", but is a mess and whenever I need to make a change, it is a nightmare trying to figure out what cables connect where and finding the right connections without disconnecting something else. My question is, where do I start? I'd like to have it cleaned up and more organized, but I'm not sure what will really make a difference. I'm looking for a low/no cost option to clean this up. I'd appreciate your suggestions! Networking devices include:Getgear switch Edgerouter X router ( + POE Injector) Arris cable modem Amazon FireTv ethernet connector Ethernet cables to various office machines/docking stations and a unifi AP AC Lite [link] [comments] |

Having high latency issues with on/off packet loss, at a loss on what to do next Posted: 24 Jun 2020 08:28 PM PDT So we are running a couple Plex servers out of the house, and we are on Spectrum's 400mb plan. Connected to the switch are: On Wifi: We ARE running two separate VPNs (ExpressVPN on the personal/Plex Server and Private Internet Access on the NAS/Proliant) but we are testing speeds (Ookla, CMD ping test) OFF VPN. We have confirmed that our buddy who lives about 2 blocks from us and is on the same ISP node as us is getting the correct speeds, he is also on the 400mb plan. The services running on the NAS are: The security gateway has hardware offload on and all DPI, IDS, IPS, smart queues etc off. I haven't touched much in the settings besides port forwards and setting static IP's for the NAS and services. [link] [comments] |
Did anyone try multiple uSB3.0 Gigabit Ethernet adapters over (powered) USB3.0 hub? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:36 PM PDT Hey, I know any USB networking is a bad idea, but would like to know how bad exactly. After all, this thing does exist. Bandwidth-wise, 4-port USB3.0 hub should be enough for 2x USB3.0 Gigabit Ethernet adapters even with overhead, and latency should be mostly OK; it should also handle two USB2.0 to 100M Ethernet adapters, although USB2.0 overhead will likely eat a bit of bandwidth, and latency will be worse - but I'd say it's OK for slower devices. So, did anyone ever give it a try, and what were the results? p.s. I totally understand the right thing to use is some PCIe Ethernet controller. Still curious about the USB adapters hooked to a hub; I'd test it myself, just for the sake of it, had I multiple USB GBe adapters... [link] [comments] |
having trouble port forwarding. Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:18 PM PDT as title says I've been having trouble getting ports 27015, 27017, and port 7777 to open at all. i'm trying to open these ports so i can use my Conan exiles server. i have tried pretty much everything i could find on the internet to no avail. i have set up a static ip for my computer. i was using a hitron coda 4582 but after reading some people saying they were also having trouble with this thing i purchased a new router d-link dlr-822, with the latest firmware. still no luck. so i called my isp (eastlink) and they told me they don't block any ports. not sure how to post pictures but my port rule has my static ip that i set, and the corresponding port in both tcp and udp boxes eg 7777. and schedule is set to always. windows firewall is completely off and i currently don't have any vpn's or anti virus installed. Is it even worth buying a wiFi 6 router right now? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:18 PM PDT With all of the wonderful promises of WiFi 6 being significantly faster and capable of handling more devices more efficiently, it seems like a no-brainer to go ahead and swap my ancient setup for a sparkly new one to take advantage of these upgrades. But, its relatively early days for WiFi 6. I mean, most devices don't even have WiFi 6 capabilities yet! Is it a mistake to rush to purchase equipment supporting a technology so new that it is essentially still in development? The fact of the matter is I am overhauling my current setup out of necessity and I have already purchased a great 32x8, DOCSIS 3.1 modem. Is it a waste of money to buy a WiFi 6 router right now? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 05:18 AM PDT Hey everyone, so I recently moved into a new place and my roommates have tasked me with upgrading the network for the house. But MOCA isn't an option neither is powerline and running Ethernet is too ugly. Plus one of my roommates needs to have daily zoom calls plus low latency gaming upstairs and the router is downstairs. So it's looking like my only option is Mesh networking. What are my options? The low latency gaming is important to him so I was thinking about a system with nodes that have additional Ethernet outs but I'm curious what products you'd use. [link] [comments] |
Does an IP phone circumvent the need for the provider’s modem / router combo? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:16 AM PDT My current internet subscription includes VoIP service. I wasn't really fond of the provider's router / modem combo so I placed it into bridge mode and used a different router. Everything was working smoothly until I decided to try and get VoIP working. I've come across conflicting opinions. Some say that VoIP will not work when the router / modem combo is in bridge mode. Others say that if your provider has disclosed username / SIP settings then simply purchasing an IP phone will work. Since my provider has disclosed username / SIP settings I purchased a Yealink W60B IP phone in hopes that it will work. Unfortunately, the IP phone is unable to register. Have I missed something? Does an IP phone (ie. Yealink) circumvent the need to use my internet provider's router / modem combo given that my provider has disclosed username / SIP settings? Or is there still something occurring under the hood in the provider's router / modem combo that will require me to still use it? Any suggestions would help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:39 AM PDT Im looking at the TP-Link C50. Also, is it faster to buy a good pci wifi card for a pc and connect the pc to the router on a 5Ghz channel or is it faster to connect the pc to the wireless router with a ethernetcable? [link] [comments] |
Confused on where to place the modem and router in my MoCA network Posted: 24 Jun 2020 04:37 PM PDT Hey everyone! I am setting up a MoCA network to get wired internet into two rooms in my house. I have an access panel in a front closet where I can rig up the coax cables, and I bought three MoCA adapters and a MoCA filter, along with a MoCA compliant splitter. The two rooms where I want wired internet are currently set up, I'm just confused as hell as to how to set up the main cabling in the closet with the modem and router. Does the "live" coax go into the splitter, or does it go directly to the modem or MoCA adapter before going to the splitter? I have a 1 in/3 our splitter as I was advised to put a MoCA adapter on the output of the splitter. I assume the other two splitter outputs go directly to the rooms. The diagram that came with the adapter shows the live signal going into the adapter and then the Ethernet out from that goes to the modem, but then I don't have a way to connect the wireless router to the modem? I'm so confused... Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Currently have a G3100 via FiOS and wondering if it’s not my best option. Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:37 PM PDT Current setup: FiOS 200/200 internet, renting the G3100 router at $15/mo. Edit: 1750 sq ft, one story, ranch house. Router is essentially located dead-center. I find myself going down the rabbit hole but not finding much in the way of a solution. I don't like spending the rental fee, but the performance out of the G3100 has been nothing short of fantastic in the several months we've had it. So while I'd like to just purchase a new router, I'm just... dumbstruck by all of it. I thought I had settled on the TP-Link A7, then saw that the A9 had better specs. Some review sites praise at least one if not both, while others decry the throughput, especially on the 2.4G band. I realize I'm going to spend ~ $180 over the next year renting the current router, and I know I'm being cheap by wanting a sub-$100 router, but what are your recommendations for a replacement? Thank you all for any input! [link] [comments] |
Trying to access wifi cameras (on google mesh wifi) from hardwired PC Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:34 PM PDT Hi guys, I'll try to make this as clear as possible: That's my network setup, and I'm trying to connect the Desktop 2 and the Wifi Cam so I can record footage over RTSP. The problem is I'm unable to connect to it at the moment. When I was running the Modem as a wifi router, it worked fine because the camera was on the same network as Desktop 2. It's unfeasible to set up all the cameras on the modem wifi because the Google Wifi mesh network has a much greater range (and the modem's wasn't great, especially not outside), so I turned it off and only have the Google Wifi now. There was one potential solution I could work out, and that is to run all my network (besides Desktop 1) through my Google Wifi (as it has an ethernet input and output on it), something like this https://imgur.com/a/0ZUDc3m. I've been hesitant to do that because google shipped an ethernet cable that really capped the speed of the connection (stock cable was 20 up 20 down, replacing it with a cat6 cable made it go 300+ up 25 down), so I'm not sure if the designers were focused on making it's internals gigabit capable when they delivered it with such a slow cable. Also the fact I'd have to reconfigure my network setup; I was hoping it could be solved through the web interfaces. -------------------------------- So, the ideal solution I'm looking for would be changing IP's, subnets, settings, etc. that would allow everything to remain the way its physically configured now. However, if that's not possible, then I can try running everything through the Google Wifi as in the second diagram. Thanks, and let me know if I've forgotten any helpful details. ------------------ Edit: I have 3 of the google wifi routers and they're in a Mesh configuration. [link] [comments] |
How many Nest Wifi points do I need Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:25 PM PDT I have Verizon Fios with a Quantum Gateway modem/router. My house is 2700sf on 2 levels, plus another 1000 sf in the basement. The Quantum Gateway reaches the 2 main levels just fine. The problem is my basement / garage where I spend a lot of time my working on projects or exercising. I often need to switch to mobile data in order to stream music down here. I have my heart set on the Nest Wifi due to the family link features. Will the 2-pack (1 router and 1 point) be enough coverage for my house? I was thinking if my Quantum Gateway router can cover my 2 main levels, then the Nest router should also be able to cover the same area. Then I can just add 1 point in the basement and I'll be covered. Am I right or do I need to get the 3-pack with 1 router and 2 points (1 point in the basement and 1 point upstairs)? TV only connects to 2.4ghz..will Ethernet be better than this? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 02:49 AM PDT Hi, Ive bought a Samsung TV UE43RU7020 and discovered it won't connect to the 5ghz wifi, only 2.4ghz. Im getting poor resolution sometimes on Netflix , which is annoying because we have fiber broadband but can't make proper use of it. Will connecting via Ethernet improve things or will it still be restricted to 2.4ghz? No point buying a super long cable if it won't make a difference..but if someone could confirm it works id get one. [link] [comments] |
How is Fiber redundancy achieved these days? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 03:30 PM PDT Hey everyone, I was contemplating an overkill solution for my house, using Fiber cables to run through the walls coming out to media converters. I started looking into it and was considering redundancy, and creating a double loop that goes around the house when I came across FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) which, from what I understood, is a deprecated technology, taken over by Ethernet deployment. So is there no way to create redundancy in a Fiber network these days except by running 2 cables to a node in star topology? Sorry if I misused some terms here, but I'm just a computer power user, not a network engineer, or anything of the sort. Any help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Amplifi alien or netgear AX8/12 ? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 04:56 PM PDT Looking for a new router to pair with netgear CM1200 Netgear Has the dual aggregation but I feel like the alien is much better overall? Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Need help with choosing WiFi settings! Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:47 PM PDT Currently there is like 4 SSID on channel 11, I am on channel 7, but being overlapped by channel 4, there is 1 on channel 3 and 2 people on channel 1. I have the option to choose 20Mhz or 40Mhz, and i don't know which is the correct choice. Which options seems more optimal?
Or any suggestion? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
TP Link Archer AC4000 - Problem with devices on 5 GHz talking to 2.4 GHz devices Posted: 24 Jun 2020 10:43 AM PDT I'm hoping somebody can help me figure out how to get around what seems to be a restriction between the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks. When trying to set up SONOS devices recently, I found out I had to put my phone on the 2.4 GHz network or else it would not find my SONOS network. This doesn't seem to happen every time I use the app, only sometimes. Today, I was connecting to my Octoprint server perfectly fine until it started giving me Socket Connection errors. Once again, solution was to switch to 2.4 GHz network, then it connected fine. Switched back to 5 GHz and still got the socket connection error. This has led me to conclude that there is something blocking the connection on the router but I may be wrong. I can't seem to find any setting that would stop one device from accessing another except for in Guest network (which is disabled), AP Isolation (which is disabled) and HomeCare antivirus (which is disabled). Any help with this would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:24 PM PDT Hey guys, So for the past month my Xfinity modem all in one has been stanky. WiFi signal doesn't reach to my daughters room, 2nd Floor 1500sqft house. So I bought the Tenda MW3 Mesh system and it was bleh. Went from 120 Gbps near the modem to 50-60 with the main node from Tenda, 20-30 on the second and third nodes, all in bridge mode. So I bought an ASUS AC1700 and running my modem in bridge mode my 5Ghz is good but still doesn't reach great to my daughters room. 2.4 reaches but is slow. I have an ASUS T-Mobile AC1900 as well that I could flash and set up AI-Mesh but I'm afraid I'll get the same issues with the Tenda and cut my speeds down. What are my options here? Am I wiring this up correctly? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 05:29 AM PDT Quick question, I have a friend that wants to expand his home network. They have a Fios router on one end of the house and he didn't have any signal across the house. I ran a line from the router to a middle point in the attic and installed a switch. From there we sent a direct line to a couple of rooms. He still has issues with WiFi in his room, so my question is, is it possible to take another network switch, plug it into his line at his room, then have one output go to his PC, and another feed go to a WiFi repeater? Or will two network switches conflict? The other option is to just run a new line from the repeater, but it won't be as close as a line in his room, but it'll still be better than what he has. Thanks! So basically router -> network switch -> network switch -> PC and another wire to repeater [link] [comments] |
Buy another extended or switch to mesh networking? What would you do? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:13 PM PDT I currently have a Netgear r6250 and a Netgear ac1200 extender. I'm running a 2.4 and a 5 ghz networks along with the 2 networks on the extender (2 5ghz and 2 2.4 GHz). House is about 1600 feet on 1st floor. Router is in the basement. Extender is on 2nd floor. I have about 30 devices. I'm starting to add 2.4 GHz outdoor cameras. I know the 2 GHz network is a bit rough outside the network. I'm wondering if I should add another extender or 2 but I'm kinda meh about another extended WiFi network. I'm kinda wondering if I should look into mesh networking but I'm not thrilled with spending more then a couple hundred. I guess I could look at a 2 ghz extender. They seem to be $50ish. What would you do in my place? [link] [comments] |
Orbi Ac3000 2 piece vs Orbi Ax4200 2 piece Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:12 PM PDT Hi, on my most recent post i have narrowed down my wifi mesh options to these 2 systems which both cover a maximum of 5000sq ft. The only issue is that i am not sure which wifi systems i should pick for a 3 story house (roughly 2400sq ft) with the wifi modem on the highest floor. I am assuming that the 4200 would give me faster speeds than the 3000 but i am not sure if this is true regardless of wifi modem even after some research on the mesh wifi system. Can someone help me simplify the difference between the 2 systems or help me reach a verdict? Thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jun 2020 05:56 PM PDT Trying to optimize the wifi in my gf apartment cuz it is shite She has FiOS 1gbps but the wifi router won't reach her room without a significant drop in speed i think walls are thick (100 year old building) I got her the TP LINK Deco W2400 2-Pack AC1200 . It is kinda lame bc ethernet LAN supports 100 mbps so she is already short changed and she keeps having a lot of issues with dropping zoom calls and such. Wondering if i should add a Deco M5 as the main router and use the two pack as the mesh beacons. Would theoretically boost speed since M5 supports gigabit but wondering if people had any experience. Other alternative is to dish out $200 for the verizon extender but I don't like the idea of being locked with their router [link] [comments] |
Recommendations for separate modem and router for Xfinity gigabit Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:51 AM PDT I'm closing on a new house on Tuesday (6/30) and need a modem and router by then. I'm looking for recommendations for an individual cable modem and individual router. We are stuck with Xfinity and we signed up for gigabit service. The house is ~3900 sqft (2 levels and a basement) and we will probably have 10-15 devices connected. So far, I think I am going to go with the Arris SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 modem that gets restocked on Amazon in two days, so hopefully I will get it delivered before Tuesday! Are there any reasons that you would not recommend going with the Arris SB8200 modem? What would you suggest for a router that works well with the surfboard modem and the size of this house? I've seen recommendations on reddit for TP Link AX3000 or the Unifi Dream Machine or "anything ASUS".. I've also been looking at some of the reviews from dongknows.com on the TP Link Archer AX6000, Netgear Nighthawk RAX40, and ASUS GT-AX11000. I'm just not sure which one is best suited for my needs. Thank you in advance!! [link] [comments] |
