Need URGENT advice as I may leave the US in less than a week

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 11:14 PM PDT

Hello guys. I know that laptops are overpriced rn, but I'm looking to get something for my dad who lives abroad and I plan on visiting them in a week or so. I work in IT and I'm pretty techy, but I can't decide what I really want to get for him. His daily usage is web browsing, youtube/movies, regular typing, Skype. So ideally I want to get something with a decent 15.6 IPS screen, snappy processor, good keyboard, and sound. I have 16 gigs of spare ram and 500 SSD to install, so those are not very important. And ideally, I want to stay <=800$ US.

    P.S.

I already got and successfully returned Acer Aspire 5 Slim, didn't really like processing speed( even with upgraded RAM), and oh boy audio was terrible. And while I know that there are options like Asus TUF, I am sure that he won't need that GPU and maybe I can get anything more suitable for his day to day usage( slim body, better battery life, etc.).

    All answers are highly appreciated.

What to choose between MX350 and RX560

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 09:56 PM PDT

Hello guys, I need to choose between MX350 and RX560 for my laptop... MX350 it's equipped with i5-1035g1, 16gb ram and 1tb ssd and it's lenovo ideapad 5, while RX560 it's equipped with i7-10510u and it's Lenovo Thinkpad E15. Personally, I would choose IdeaPad 5 because of the graphic support and performance, but thinkpad quality it's much better... What do you think?

    Laptop or iPad?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 01:18 AM PDT

So I will be attending college this year as a freshman and I plan to pursue a bio major on a pre-dental track, would you recommend getting a laptop or iPad? Since Apple is having their back to school student discount right now I plan on purchasing one or the other but I am unsure.

Need a laptop for 3D work in Blender and 3DS Max + some gaming ($3000-$3200) USA

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 10:56 AM PDT

    Desired screen size: 17"

    Country: USA

    Budget: $3000-$3200

Requirement: I need a numpad for hotkey compatibility in Blender

Requirement: I need a decent RTX card for rendering (preferably an RTX 2080 Super)

I will be doing mostly 3D work on this laptop, but I also game a bit on the side.

Applications I'll be using are: Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, Blender, 3DS Max, ZBrush, Steam, Various Games

I've already purchased a Razer Blade Pro 17, but I'm returning it because the lack of a numpad and some very strange driver issues. So please don't suggest that laptop.

I am currently looking at the MSI GE75 Raider 17.3″. But I want to know if there is anything better out there.

Any help at all would be amazing!

Edit: Thanks so much for all the great suggestions! What an amazing subreddit.

Need a good cheap laptop for a couple games and school

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:41 AM PDT

I'm going to be starting University in the fall and I need a good laptop that will run smoothly. I need it for homework and research and online stuff for sure, but I would also like for it to be able to run Sims with all my expansion packs and other content, a few other smaller games, and be able to run netflix and youtube and disney and all that as well. I also need it to be pretty cheap as I have no money after paying for uni and I want a smaller one that is easier to carry with me. I know it's a lot of requirements but i'm hoping the more specific the easier it'll be to find one? I haven't done much research online because computer stuff is so confusing to me and i didn't think i'd be able to find someone else asking the exact same thing as me.

14" laptop for Office work under £500

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 03:43 AM PDT

    As above

    Under £500 (GBP)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    - No thank you.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.),, performance, and battery life?

    - Form factor and battery would be preferred.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    - Quite important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    - Around 14" is preferred.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    - No, Presentations and word processing only.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    - No gaming at all.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    - Windows 10 required. No chromebooks please.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    - This would be a device for running simple processes like MS word, Powerpoint, Excel and PDF files.

A follow up to my previous post really where I was looking for a windows tablet buthave talked the girlfriend into getting a slim and portable laptop instead.

The items I've looked at so far would be the following:

    Asus M409

    https://www.box.co.uk/M409DA-EB160T-ASUS-M409DA-EB160T_2886175.html

    Ideapad S340

Some help to resolve my dilemma would be appreciated.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 03:26 AM PDT

I have a budget of 80k-90k INR which is approximately 1000-1200usd. Laptops in India are very expensive compared to those in US. So according to the Indian price, I've shortlisted these two laptops.

ASUS TUF FX505DV : It has an RTX 2060 and it's almost 150usd cheaper. It has a 120hz display. Downside being the processor that is the Ryzen 7 3750h.

    Link : https://www.amazon.in/FX505DV-Graphics-7-3750H-Windows-FX505DV-AL026T/dp/B07VRLX5Y9/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=1660ti+laptop&qid=1592862064&sr=8-4

Lenovo Legion Y540 : It has a 144hz display and an i7 9750h. It is expensive in comparison and the graphic card is 1660ti.

    Link : https://www.croma.com/lenovo-legion-y540-15irh-81sx00f0in-core-i7-9th-gen-windows-10-home-laptop-16-gb-ram-1-tb-hdd-+-256-gb-ssd-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1660-ti-+-6-gb-graphics-39-62cm-black-/p/222905

I am a developer and my side hobby is gaming, I don't necessarily need a competitive level laptop. I just want to play games casually without any fps drops.

Can someone explain which one is better and why. I have heard a lot of bottle neck issues in ASUS.

    Portege X30T or Surface Book 3 ?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 02:26 AM PDT

    Hello,

I am looking to buy a laptop very soon for work. Since I already have a gaming desktop for the heavy lifting, I am looking for a 2-in-1 detachable laptop to easily use on the go, use for office apps, note taking, web based software etc.. I came to the conclusion that the best options out there with a reasonable screen size would be the Surface Book 3 or the Toshiba Portege X30T.

Has anyone have any experience with those and if so may you give me your feedback please?

    thanks!

Really Difficult Decision, same latop, amd or intel?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 02:20 AM PDT

Hi guys, I'm trying to find a decent laptop for my sister that just graduated this year. I need something as futureproof as possible, and needs to be able to do the daily basics, as in the microsoft suite, netflix and web browsing, but this laptop needs to take her through college.

I've managed to narrow it down to these two laptops by Asus:

    Asus VivoBook S14 S431 (Core i5-10210U (10th Gen), NVIDIA GeForce MX250 (2 GB), 512 GB NVMe M.2 SSD)

Asus ZenBook 14 UM431DA 14", AMD R5-3500U Quad Core, AMD Radeon Vega 8, 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD

Theyre both basically identical. Vivobook is Intel with Nvidia Graphics, and the Zenbook is AMD through out.

Really stuck, as seems like the addition of the Nvidia graphics offsets the the graphical perforamance that AMD has in the Ryzen/Vega area. Both are around the same price, about a $25 difference with the intel being more expensive.

Any help would be deeply appriciated, as i need to make the purchase before the weekend is over. thank you.

Laptop recommendations for a school teacher, no gaming

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 06:29 PM PDT

Looking for suggestions on a good, high speed laptop for a school teacher. The very most important thing is a quick boot time and quick starting of internet browser/other programs. It will be used for things like taking attendance so speed is key. Preferably a lightweight one for carrying with books etc. A good battery life would be a plus as well, but it's ok if it needs to be plugged in during classes.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE * Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:$500-$600 Canadian after taxes * Are you open to refurbs/used?No * How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?We have an iPad so tablet convertible doesn't matter. Doesn't need touch screen. Battery life is the most important. * How important is weight and thinness to you?Lighter to carry in a school bag. * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not too big of a screen, less than 15" preferably * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Basic programs like PowerPoint, google chrome, etc. * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?No games will be played on it. * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Doesn't need optical drive. No preferences. Maybe a keyboard that feels substantial/clicks when you press the keys, not necessary though. * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.N/a

    Laptop for gaming

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 01:10 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    £1000

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I would really prefer new, but if you could suggest a refurb or used with superior specs I would be interested. Not looking to just shave a bit of the price off

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I'm purely looking for performance. Battery life isn't important as I will mostly be using a plug connection. However it would be nice if it was sturdy and built well too.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming - I play a huge variety of games, new and old, however I am under the impression that if it could run games such as R6S and rise of the tomb raider at decent graphics with a decent frame rate. It will be fine for the rest

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As listed above, I play just about anything that interests me at the time. However I play a large amount of R6S and WoW so those will be my main concerns. I would like to be able to play most games on high graphics and above 60fps if possible

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

An RGB keyboard would be awesome, but not totally required.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

If my budget is totally unreasonable for what I'm asking for. Just let me know!

I have a Lenovo Flex 14 and I like it a lot, but wondering how much of a boost I could get for around 1.5k

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 08:12 PM PDT

    I've got this guy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PB5M8DS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've added some extra RAM so I'm at 20GB of ram total. Overall I really like this computer- the size and form factor is perfect, I like the 2-in-1 for doing digital art, it handles most of what I throw at it for work pretty decently, and it runs some modern games on low settings with a decent framerate. I use this laptop for everything. I work remotely, I do art on my computer, watch movies on it, play some video games. My main complaints are

1- the hdd is very small. I have a dual boot set up with linux, and after partitioning off 50gb for that and installing various software I'm really only left with a bit under 100GB to juggle game installations, image files, movies, etc.

2- it can get a little sluggish while I'm working. I tend to use a handful of different tools at once, some of which are not the most efficient- things like salesforce and workast for example. when I'm really getting into it and move fast I do find these often moving slower than I'd like

3- I wouldn't mind playing some more modern games without having to be on quite such low settings

4- Not sure if it's my wifi card or external factors, but I often have wifi issues.

5- I've got 2 usb ports which is alright, but it'd be pretty nice to have just one more

Anyway, my current laptop does the trick and there's a lot I like about it. It cost me about $700 last year and I'm just wondering how much of a boost I could get by doubling that budget. Thanks in advance. Cheers,

How is this Acer Aspire 5?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 11:50 PM PDT

This laptop seems very good for its price. I did read though fans or touchpad could be a possible issue. Mainly will be used for software coding as a CS student in College and other projects outside of classes. Looking for a long term investment, something that can last at least 5 years without any major issues, so build quality and reliability is important. Can this laptop do anything intensive?

Looking for a laptop in Hong Kong. Budget would be 8,000 to 10,000 HKD

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 07:47 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

So I am currently in Hong Kong and relocating in the Indian Ocean to launch my business. I need a very portable laptop which will last me 5 years, has international warranty (when purchased from Hong Kong) and is at least 500GB (as I have a backup that weights 300GB that I will move on my new machine). I need a Windows operating system.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

8,000 to 10,000 HKD - I can be a little flexible on this.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

No. I would like it to be new.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I do not need 2in1 (I don't see the point really). Ultrabook. Build quality, performance and battery life all important for me. I'd like a premium finish.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very important. I will be carrying this laptop everywhere so need it to me extremely portable.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 to 14 inch. Would consider 15 for the perfect machine but ideally I'd like it to be smaller (as I need laptop to be super portable).

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

This laptop will be used for personal and work. A little bit of coding. Lots of Office use. An odd party or WarZone sometime maybe (but also have a PS4 so will mainly use this for gaming).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Got zero clue what FPS is lol. But yeah a little bit of Call Of Duty sometimes but not looking for gaming laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Comfortable laptop to use. I am not taking a work station or anything so will be spending my day looking at this laptop. Needs to be Windows.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I think everything is explained above. I kinda have my eyes on the XPS 13 9300 which is priced at 11,500HKD but this is the price for the entry range and I hear it's not a great machine and I need to pay more for the better speced one and I'm not keen to out 15,000HKD in this machine.

    Thanks for helping out guys.

Trying to Choose between the Eluktronics Max-15 v. RP-15/17

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 07:22 PM PDT

    Hi guys.

So I'm trying to decide between 3 different laptops with similar specs besides the CPU. I'm honestly just trying to keep my budget under $1500~.

I understand that the RP-15/17 and the Max-15 from Eluktronics both have a RTX 2060, a 63WHr battery and basically everything else is the same. The only differences I really see are

    Max-15: - i7-10875H - magnesium alloy chassis - MUX switch - Thunderbolt 3

    RP-15: - ryzen 7 4800H - aluminum/resin chassis

    RP-17: - ryzen 7 4800H - resin chassis - 17.3in with camera at the top

I'm honestly stuck at a crossroads and was just wondering if someone could tell me which one is more worth.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE * Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:$1500USD * Are you open to refurbs/used?NO * How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Just hoping to find a decent gaming laptop that I can future proof. * How important is weight and thinness to you?hoping to keep it under 5lb * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15in, but I've never had a 17in so I don't know if it's too big * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly office work(excel, tableau, etc), light gaming, web browsing * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Borderlands 3, league of legends, at medium setting is fine * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Hey! Looking for a laptop for college

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 10:51 PM PDT

I am a software engineering student and i'm looking to buy a new laptop. The problem is my budget stands at $850 or less. I want this laptop to last my entire college time(4-5 years) and my needs would be :

    • Good build quality
    • Good screen
    • Good keyboard
    • Good battery life
    • Good performance

Are there any options that you would recommend to me?

P.S : I know I might sound a bit unreasonable but please help me out if you got any options. Thank you.
