Looking for a gaming laptop that doesn't light up like a Christmas tree

    Posted: 01 May 2020 12:56 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm in Canada looking for a laptop under $1600 that has a dedicated graphics card better than Intel UHD, but has a business style to it that I can bring to work with me. I also need a number pad for calculations. Any suggestions?

    study and work

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:13 AM PDT

I currently don't have a laptop but will be starting a course. I'll be spending a couple days a week at university + writing some essays etc and a thesis and a couple days a week working in a role where I will need the laptop. I'm hoping to spend £300 or less although if something is a little more I'll consider it.

I'm looking at an asus Chromebook which is 300 but I'm unsure if I'll have the functionality to say, wrote an essay on the train, as it says it needs the internet more. I'm also worried how not having Microsoft will affect things, can I use office and will it cost me a fortune to do so? is there a decent alternative to office which will offer the same file types so I can send documents still.

Huawei matebook x pro (2018) for SC2 low settings

    Posted: 02 May 2020 06:12 AM PDT

A friend of mine is offering me to sell me his Huawei Matebook x pro for $650. He said he bought it a year ago at Microsoft store for $1,299.

Huawei Matebook X Pro 53010CAJ Laptop

Signature Edition Thin & Light Laptop, 13.9" 3K Touch, 8th Gen i7-8550U, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, GeForce MX150, 3:2 Aspect Ratio, Office 365 Personal, Space Gray - Mach-W29C

I really want a thin and light laptop for general use. I also want to be able to play starcraft 2 on low settings for late game 4v4's.

This deal seems to good to pass up... i look up similar specs on other laptops from other companies and they run up to $1,700+.

His laptop is in great condition as well.

He also has the microsoft professional 4 year protection plan on it... so if it ever breaks, we can get a full replacement, full fix, etc. He told me to just give it to him so he can take to microsoft store and fix it under his account.

High quality laptop purely for CSGO

    Posted: 02 May 2020 05:59 AM PDT

    Country: UK

    Budget: £1,300

Importance of weight and thinness?: None

    Which OS?: Windows 10

    Screen size: Over 17 inch

    Purpose: Gaming

Specifically?: CSGO at a consistent 300fps (at low settings)

Specific requirements?: 240Hz screen if possible within budget, otherwise 144Hz. Other than that, I'm concerned about overheating, so plenty of fans/vents/good quality cooler etc would be nice please.

    Thanks

United Kingdom. £400 - £600. Laptop for office work and personal use.

    Posted: 02 May 2020 05:43 AM PDT

    Hello!

I am looking for a laptop for my mother. She runs a small business and wants a laptop for office work and personal use.

She transfers a lot of files so an SSD of a reasonable size and usb ports would be helpful.

She would like the build quality to be good. Modern looking and thin-ish would also be good.

I am not great at this stuff so any help is appreciated.

    Thank you all so much!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      £400 - £600
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Not really
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, build quality, battery life and form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Thinness would be nice. Weight not important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Standard. 14 to 16 inches I guess.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No. Just microsoft office, an internet browser and some accounting software.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I don't care about build quality, but I'd like good gaming performance, any kind of battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I like it to be light, but thinness doesn't matter

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Any kind is fine

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A gtx 1660 TI or better is required, a screen with high refresh rate would be nice, and backlit keyboard

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd like a laptop that's really good a gaming, but doesn't look like a gaming laptop with rgb keyboard and gaming accents on the body.

Programming & Light Gaming & Web browsing [2000EUR, Poland]

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:47 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:10 000PLN (~2150EUR), can add extra 10%; Poland
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?I'd rather a new machine.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Build quality, form factor, battery life, performance.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?I want to carry my machine around a bit, so I'd prefer it to weight less than 2kg.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.14 inches would be perfect.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.I'd like to be able to run an IDE (IntelliJ and similar) and at least a few docker containers at the same time. For games, these are optional, but I'd like to be able to run games such as Stellaris, Guild Wars 2, Divinity Original Sin, Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity (I + II), Minecraft and possibly Sid Meier's Civilization VI.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? For the games I mentioned already, I'd like to be able to maintain at least 40fps on high/ultra where it's reasonable - for instance, Stellaris tends to lag even on a relatively powerful desktops ;-)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?I'd love to have a comfortable keyboard and a screen that's nice to look at. I'd also prefer a high-quality touchpad. Reliable build quality is a must.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I need a machine for non-professional programming (by that, I mean that I have a separate machine to do my job) , reading pdfs, light gaming (it's optional, I have a desktop PC for that). I've been looking at T14 Thinkpads, but they're not available yet. Also, Lattitude 5401 looks like a good machine for my needs - I'm a little bit worried about the screen, though (I don't mind the weak gpu). I've also been looking at ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, but I'm not sure about the quality of gaming laptops. Macbook Air 2020 with i5 and 16GB of RAM looks nice on paper, but it's also rather expensive for the CPU power it offers. I can deal with either Windows, Linux and Mac OS.

Laptop for under £1000 for general use, music production and some gaming?

A Windows Laptop for Music Production

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £900, United Kingdom
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications, then battery life, I'm not bothered w a 2 in 1
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not too much but I don't want an ugly monster to drag around.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be running Ableton Live 10 a lot, and Adobe Premiere Pro occasionally
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games like Call of Duty World at War & Minecraft would be nice, but being able to play more recent games eg Black Ops III at decent settings would be a really nice touch, but it's not a priority.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A decent number of ports, a reliable laptop that doesn't overheat all the time like my last one. I'm not super familiar with specs and all I just want to reliably be able to work on large musical projects inside of Ableton
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I would say I am an average knowledgeable person when it comes to laptops. So obviously I did research when it came to buying my first gaming laptop. My budget is 900-1100 dollars and I want the best possible laptop for what my budget is. I did some looking around on reddit and I came across this reseller for sager and clevo, LPC-DIGITAL, and I found a laptop with good specs and is in my price range. I just do not know if I might be making a mistake. Will someone help me decide or inform me on anything else that is better? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! Yoga s730 vs Huawei Matebook X Pro

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:03 AM PDT

    Hello,

I know these two are in vastly different prices but I'm just wondering if I should spend that much more for a laptop. What is appealing to me in Yoga (non convertible, outside Europe its ideapad 730s) is the size. I don't really need portable laptop but since I'm buying a laptop not desktop PC i still consider size and weight to be important.

Yoga being this thin and light make matebook look big even if matebook is still quite lightweight and thin laptop on its own.

Performance is about the same as both models I'm considering are i5s (10gen in yoga, 8th in matebook x pro or whatever is used in 2019 model) and 8 gigs of ram. Matebook has mx250 which make some gaming possible however it's low prio for me.

The only thing that is pushing me into matebook direction its the screen of very high resolution and 3:2 aspect ration. I'm just wondering if that's enough.

The aspect that I can't judge is the brightness. Reviews say that yoga has about 300 nits but still they call it bright which on some other reviews people call 300 nits dim I don't know how to interpret that. Matebook has over 400 so no question there.

    Yoga costs me 3600

    Matebook 5000,

Currency doesn't matter. I'm just showing what is the difference.

I'm just looking for your thoughts on the topic.

Coffee just took out my baby

    Posted: 02 May 2020 12:02 AM PDT

Just spilled coffee on my asus rog g752 I got in 2016 and I'm gonna need a new one. Cant be more than 1500 preferably about 1300. I have some requirements and know very little about laptops. Number one is that the cooling and dust prevention needs to be decent. I dont mind extra weight if it means a more robust cooling system. Having used this 9 pounder asus with a protruding fan it's no problem.

Gaming needs to be able to run rdr2 and 2k well as well as far cry etc. I also use my laptop for ableton too. Also need a 17 inch screen at least and this thing needs to be able to handle sitting on my bed(I do use a flat surface and my laptop has always handled this well)

Thank you to anyone who takes the time. I am intrigued thus far by the msi ge75 raider and the leopard and since I loved my asus I would prefer to stick with one of those 2 brands.

Looking for a replacement / alternative for a dell latitude E6330 in the 250 to 300€ range

    Posted: 02 May 2020 03:37 AM PDT

EDIT: Used the form, initial post below.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US
      • Germany / EU, between 250€ and 300€
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      • yes, if legit
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      • form factor: Unimportant
      • build quality: Important
      • performance: Unimportant (web-surfing will be the only purpose)
      • battery life: Indifferent
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      • not important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      • 13,3" or larger
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • no
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • reliable build quality preferred
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Initial Post:

My father gave me an old dell latitude E6330 from his company about a year ago and now he wants to have it back.

The problem is that the E6330 broke during moving and I feel quite bad about it and want to compensate him. I looked into re-buying a E6330 but the prices are about ~400€ which I think is too expensive for such an old device. Moreover, they tend to be "refurbished and I heard quite bad things about such products.

He mainly wants to use the laptop for "online-banking" (no idea why he needs a separate laptop for that but it's not my point to question his decision). I assume that he requires a stable, long-lasting and somewhat "sturdy-looking" computer. No streaming, gaming or music production involved.

Any ideas for that in the range between 250€ and 300€?

Can I get anything from AMD 4th gen under 850 USD ?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 07:12 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    800-850 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I prefer something big with decent cooling performance. I rarely ever move it anyways.

I also keep it plugged in at all times.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not really. Unless it is too heavy to get on a plane or something

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Gaming and Photoshop

I also use Office Applications like Excel and Word. (Which is why I like having a numpad)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Assassin's Creed Series, Batman Arkham Games, CS GO (I want over 90 FPS min here)

Anything over 60 FPS for open word games.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Numpad would be nice. But if that is not possible I may consider an external keyboard for when I need it

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am really interested in 4th gen AMD chips. I wonder if I could get any of them for under 850$ .

Otherwise I may have to go Intel.

    Girlfriend needs help deciding!

    Posted: 01 May 2020 08:21 PM PDT

So, like the title states, my girlfriend needs a laptop ASAP to continue her job search. She has a budget of $300 to $350. She will not be using the laptop for gaming or anything of that sorts...

Her requirements are basically a 14 inch - 15 inch display and a processing speed that allows her to edit her resume / access Linkedin / utilize Microsoft Suite. She is open to a either a Chromebook or regular Windows 10 computer.

We have been going back in forth over about what she should buy for days now.. would be nice to have other inputs to convince her.

Thanks for your help! I appreciate any / all of it :)

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:07 AM PDT

I've had Lenovos for my last two laptops. They've done fine but they started to slow after 2-3 years. Not sure if that's just how they're built or the fact I download from PirateBay.

I don't use it for gaming or anything more than internet browsing, Excel, Word, email, and downloading movies/TV shows. to hook up to my TV via HDMI.

Hi, I'm planning to buy a laptop and I was wondering if the Helios 300 is still worth it or if I should wait for the AMD cpu's or the 10th gen intel cpu (here in Portugal no one sells it already). I'll just use it for gaming and a bit later on for university but the weight doesn't bother me at all. Btw is there anything known about a new Helios 300 coming? Thx

My budget is about €2200 ($2440) max, within this price range i've been going back and forth between the Legion Y740 and the Zephyrus G14.

The Legion has my slight preference because of a slightly better GPU (GTX 2070 vs 2060), two ram slots, thunderbolt port and the Gsync option. However i hear the battery life is abysmal and the adaptor is the biggest brick i've ever seen on a power cord.

The G14 has (in my opinion) a sleeker design but only comes in a 14 inch screen, i would prefer a 15 inch. It does have a much better battery life, more cores in the processor and higher screen resolution.

Or maybe there are laptops within my price range i've overlooked that can give me even more value for my money?

Would love to hear your opinions and suggestions!

    Laptop for programming

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    5000-6500 PLN, Poland

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Nope, only new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Good battery life, good performance.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6" or bigger.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I migt use some graphic editors in the future.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Definitely a good keyboard, good amount of USB ports.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently I'm using old Asus X550C, which is in a really bad state. I want a good laptop that will last me another 5-7 years. I'm looking for a laptop purely for programming, lots of coding (although I might play some games on it, but I don't really care about that) . I think hexa core CPU is mandatory, Intel. I'll be working on Linux too.

I saw lots of gaming laptops, such as Asus ROG Strix G, Acer Helios 300, but I'm sceptical about them as they're for gaming.

Hello! I recently just had my laptop of 5 years (Microsoft Surface Book) break down on me. I just keep getting a red light on the detach button and it won't even turn on anymore. I'm just wondering if you guys have any suggestion for a good gaming laptop (primarily just run something like Overwatch on medium setting really well with no lag or stuttering) while also good for school work as well. When I say school work, just something like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, etc... Budget is around $1200. Thanks in advance!
