My 20 core/40 thread, 128gb ram "budget" (~$600) home server build! Posted: 23 Apr 2020 09:20 AM PDT I love messing around with different homelab builds. I've had custom rack mount servers, HP mini PCs, and some Dell servers. Space is a big concern for me, so I wanted an all-in-one solution. Here's my new baby! Everything with $0 was old stuff lying around. I already had all the drives from a previous server (except one of the SSDs) and the GPU, which is only used for getting the server setup. I purchased a few of the parts off of eBay (CPUs, motherboard, and PSU), the RAM I found from a random little store in New York via google (for a really good price too), and the rest of the parts were bought off of craigslist/facebook marketplace. The passive coolers that came with the motherboard just aren't good enough for the 95w TDP processors, so I have those cheap upHere coolers coming in next week. This build is going to mostly be used for Plex, Minecraft/Rust server, File server, and my firewall. I have yet to decide what to do with these SSDs, so if you have any idea, let me know! I think I might just RAID 0 them all for some fast network storage. [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Apr 2020 07:04 AM PDT Hi guys, got the above dilemma. Currently using a 3900x with 980ti. I can get a brand new Gigabyte 1080ti gaming OC or a MSI Gaming X Trio for ~USD$505 or a 1 month old Sapphire Pulse 5700 XT @ ~USD$420. Someone wants to buy my 980ti right now so I figured i'll jump on either of these cards. Which would you guys pick? The prices in my country are a little bit crappy. Most used 1080ti's are at around the $480 mark and the 5700xt's for slightly more. Would want to future proof for 1440p 144hz, mostly play csgo and COD/PUBG style titles [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Apr 2020 06:37 AM PDT The 3300x is more powerful but the 1600af has 6 cores, which to get for a gaming PC? [link] [comments]
My GPU is terribly under performing Posted: 23 Apr 2020 10:39 AM PDT I got a new GPU RTX2060 super, old one was RX580 but when I launched some games I noticed the fps I was getting was actually worse than before. I made sure to uninstall old amd drivers using DDU and install new nvidia drivers. I also verified to make sure all my power settings were set on high performance. Please help me. : ( old GPU: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/25884920 With new GPU:https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/27040090 PSU model/wattage : 500 [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Apr 2020 03:30 PM PDT So after finally engaging with a lot of you folks, I was able to set the last pieces together, thank you all for helping me making this a reality, after 6 years: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/phBxPn I just need a last check by you guys to avoid any problems/regrets there could be. I checked prices here and there and it will amount to around 1250 Euros. I live in Germany and already found some parts that are cheaper when I buy them "used" (for example a MOBO from a guy who wanted to start building a PC, but did not get to, so i get the MOBO for a great price of 90 Euros instead of 125). I won't be able to buy everything at once, I believe I will be on the lookout for good deals, as I am only now able to start saving money. Thank you all for the tremendous help, I hope we can get some people together to look at this! Why CPU?: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core ProcessorI believe the processor delivers great value for it's price and has great reviews everywhere I see it. Why MOBO?: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 MotherboardI chose it for several reasons: No MOBO Update for the Ryzen 3600 and it offers the RAM to run on 3600 MHz. I previously had the B450 MSI Gaming Pro Carbon because it has WIFI adapter, but it turned out it only can run up to 3466 MHz. On top of it, the Tomahawk MAX is cheaper and I just added the TP-Link TL-WN881ND PCIe x1 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter so I can also use WIFI. Why RAM?: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 MemoryBecause RAM seems to matter when it comes to FPS and I wanted to be on the safe side with the RAM I chose. It has a CL of 16 which seems good (in contrast to CL19, I saw it can add up to 40 FPS, correct me if I'm wrong). And it also can run on the MOBO I chose. Why Storage?: Crucial P1 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State DriveI chose this one as it offers a great value NVME SSD for 1 TB, which is perfect for the amount of games I play and also to run the OS (Windows 10) on. Also less cable management. Why GPU?: Gigabyte Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB GAMING OC Video CardIt runs greatly with the Ryzen 5 3600, it also is good to run new games on I like to try and leaves me the opportunity to also stream if I want to do it in the future. I was at first considering a Gigabyte OC 1660 Super, but I decided to step up the game with this card as I heard a lot of great feedback on the 5700 XT. Why PSU?: Corsair RM (2019) 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power SupplyI was wondering if 650W is a little bit too much, but I figured that it is a good investment to keep a higher Watt amount for future upgrades. I also once read a good tip: better more than less. Correct me if i'm wrong on this or if this was too much. I also saw that this one is rated as a very good A+/S Tier PSU on the Tier List. Why Case/Peripherals?:To be honest, for the first time in my life I did not want to make compromises when it comes to my interaction with the first PC I built, so I just picked what I liked here... Ryzen 5 3600 or 7 3700X for 1080p 144hz gaming? (With GTX 1080 GPU) Posted: 23 Apr 2020 03:20 PM PDT Anyone have advice on which cpu to get? I'm trying to hit 144 frames in most games with high settings. Should I go with the 3600 or 3700X. I'm also looking to upgrade my mobo and ram so altogether the price difference is only around $200 so should I just go for the 3700X? Edit: forgot to mention I'm upgrading from a i7 2600k so it's been a while since I've upgraded my cpu [link] [comments]
Parts are starting to come in the mail and I still haven't ordered any monitors! Help? Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:25 PM PDT Build Help/Ready:Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Gaming. Particularly online, fps, and a LOT of Kerbal Space Program If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) The highest performance monitor my computer would need. I don't want any of its performance to be lost on the display (of course) Honestly, whatever it costs. I don't want to overpay but I will pay for what I need. In what country are you purchasing your parts? USA. (The pcpartpicker list shows euros, but disregard) Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!). Provide any additional details you wish below. I've been thinking double monitors so I can keep orbital data on one screen and spacecraft display on the other. I'm also a huge sucker for curved monitors so if it's possible I'd probably do two curved? Ultra-wide even? Is that not recommended? I also just don't know what type of monitor I would even need. NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section. If you have to pick between higher resolution or higher refresh rate, always pick refresh rate. Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:22 PM PDT I can't even begin to explain how much better my 1080p 144hz monitor feels versus a 4k60hz tv. It takes less gpu power to drive it, and the change in latency is ridiculous. Now when I move the mouse, I expect it to move with me immediately. Anyway, if you are looking at new monitors, high refresh rate is better than higher resolution every day of the week. Just my opinion. [link] [comments]
Bought a brand new 2080ti on offerup Posted: 23 Apr 2020 02:09 PM PDT I bought an unopened 2080ti from someone who looked like a reputable seller on offerup. I picked it up, everything was fine, he even emailed me his evga purchase confirmation and his PayPal invoice confirming he bought it. However I tried registering the serial number on evga and it said there was an issue. I contacted evga and they said the original buyer disputed the transaction and there was a charge back for the card. I cannot get the warranty until the charge back is canceled or the card is returned. Is there anything I can do in this situation? I would really hate to not have warranty on this product. Thanks. I built a pc a week or two ago, I just found out my ssd isn’t working Posted: 23 Apr 2020 11:52 AM PDT I have a 240 gb sata m.2 ssd and i realised that it isn't actually working, I thought my os automatically went to my ssd. I just want to say thank you to this subreddit, even though I didn't post; I read other peoples post. The only thing I want to change is my AMD stock cooler to Cooler Master Hyper 212 black edition.

What should you do if you move a hard drive with an OS and existing apps to a new system? Posted: 23 Apr 2020 04:18 PM PDT For the last few years I have been using a pre-build Acer Aspire tc280... (I know I'm leaving the dark side of pre builds now) but considering that I already have my Windows 10 OS and all other app + Plug ins, what should I do when moving that hard drive to a new system. I've saved up enough and gotten myself together a tomahawk MB, RYZEN 5 1600X, MSI GTX 1070 (etc).... basically a near completely new system. But I wanted to use my old hard drive without need to re download everything that I have currently. Thanks in advance ;) [link] [comments]
1st Time Building mini-ITX: Lingering Questions on CPU Bios and Parts Fitting Posted: 23 Apr 2020 04:01 PM PDT Long story short have never built a PC before, and am now trying my hand at a mini-ITX one due to space limitations in my living area (cramped apartment). The goal of this rig is to ideally play all the newest games for the next 2-3 years at ~60 FPS or more in 1080p. In addition I do heavy internet browsing (100+ tabs easy in time) for WFH and entertainment purposes. I have done some early research to arrive at the parts I prefer below. I chose the Thermaltake Core V1 due to its short "depth" factor since my desk is fairly cramped in width: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cdv79G
However I'm still new to this field, so my questions are as follows:
Thanks for any help. [link] [comments]

Thoughts & Recommendation on potential PC build Posted: 23 Apr 2020 05:29 PM PDT Hello everyone and thank you in advance for your comments. I've never built a pc before and would like to. The price of this pc is around CAD1,500 before tax, which is expensive. I want it to game (love witcher 3) but also like to multi-task (lots of tabs, many programs running simultaneously) and use photoshop. Here is what I'm looking for from you redditers:

Posted: 23 Apr 2020 05:18 PM PDT Hey everyone, I just updated my computer after the death of my motherboard. I got a new Ryzen 3600x, RX 5700 XT, on a b450 Tomahawk mobo. I am very happy. However, I have an ancient monitor I've avoided updating for ages. This thing has been with me for multiple PCs, and every year I look at new monitors to upgrade to. However, I never pull the trigger The combination of refresh rates, input lag, and display is a lot. Does anyone have any suggestions based on my new build which takes into account not wanting to break the bank? [link] [comments]
AIO cooler for GPU and CPU in a Cooler Master N200. Posted: 23 Apr 2020 03:04 PM PDT I have a Cooler Master N200 case and want to use AIO cooler for both my cpu and gpu (kraken g12). What are some good recommendations for compatible AIOs and what configuration (push/pull and location) should i put them in? I'm in the US. [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Apr 2020 01:30 PM PDT AMD RYZEN 7 3700x 8 cores vs 2700x 8 cores. Which one should I get I hear 2700x is actually better. I could definitely use some opinions. [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Apr 2020 04:51 PM PDT Build Help/Ready:Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes. What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Gaming. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) This is his first experience with pc gaming so I think 1080p at 144hz would be sufficient, but if 1440p is the play here I'm open to suggestions. What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? $1,500 for the build and another ~$200 for the monitor. In what country are you purchasing your parts? USA, no Microcenter. Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).
Provide any additional details you wish below. Also not included in the budget I'll be buying some RGB fans (probably the Corsair QL120s) and strips. That's why I went for a nicer motherboard aesthetically and the STRIX card over a reference cooler. Definitely want to keep the fully modular power supply as well just so it's cleaner looking in general. A couple of questions:
Thank you for taking the time to read over this everyone. My nephew is just getting into the PC world after being on console his whole life other than a crappy laptop. He only started watching YT videos a few days ago but I've built a number of PCs so I'm not worried about it. I'm going to try to "help" as little as possible and let him take the reins on everything. Hopefully he'll be as hooked as I was after my first build. Thanks again! [link] [comments] |
