Best way to run Ethernet around new house?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 06:47 PM PDT

Ok here goes. Just bought a new house. This house has Coax all through the house. Individual lines ran to almost everyone room. I'm looking to run ethernet in its place. What is the best way to run those lines? I have an idea in my head but i don't know if it is correct. I can use any tips or tools anyone on here has to help me run the lines..

Forgot to mention that the basement is unfinished so huge plus.

Edit: Also, forgot to say that all coax lines lead to a nice centralized point in the basement. Which is where I want to put my rack.

Any benefit to gigabit ethernet if my connection is much slower (<100Mbps)?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 05:59 AM PDT

Hello, my ISP recently upgraded me from 30mbps to 100mbps.

Downstream from my ISP's modem/router I have another router that I use as ethernet switch. This router (Tp-link W8960N) is relatively old and only has Fast ethernet (100mbps) ports on the back.

I don't do any home-network file transfers between devices, all I want is low latency for my ethernet connected PC, Nintendo Switch and Smart TV.

Would there be any benefit for me in upgrading the router to a gigabit ethernet switch? I thought that since my line caps at 100mbps (and won't be upgraded above this for a very long time) there's no benefit in >100mbps ethernet, am I right?

Quick question regarding upgrading from ISP-supplied router

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:30 AM PDT

My ISP provided an all-in-one modem/router/firewall. I wanted to set up a VLAN (after reading about it on this sub) but the kit supplied doesn't do it and I found out it cant be modified to do it.

Separately I'd like to set up an FTP server for my CCTV camera uploads.

A Raspberry Pi could do the FTP bit and a standalone router could do the VLAN bit.

Question is, would there be a big cost increase (both initial and ongoing) to get a standalone server machine instead which would do the Vlan and FTP combined relative to separating them into separate entities.

I hope that makes sense and thanks in advance for any input.

WiFi range reduced, can't detect it from my study anymore. Solutions?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 05:46 PM PDT

These past two weeks I've been having trouble connecting to my wifi network. I have a Netgear R6120.

Both the 2.4ghz and 5 ghz SSIDs will sometimes just disappear from my study, when I used to have a very strong connection. I thought it was a defective unit at first, but the problems stayed even after I bought an exact model to replace my router.

I think the most likely culprit is channel interference from my neighbors' wifis.

    Wifi Usage:

    • Occasional light gaming

    • A lot of Skype/Zoom meetings (stable, minimal lag is a must)

    • The usual youtube/music/browsing

    • a few google homes, phones, laptops connected to it

    • ~2100 sq ft house.

    • (Later) ring cameras outside our home

    What are my options now?

Would upgrading my router help? I'm thinking maybe the x10, a powerline extender, or go with a mesh network. (I do not want to overengineer the solution, mesh might be overkill?). Other suggestions welcome!

    Nanostation loco m2 slow speeds

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 09:02 PM PDT

My current setup is modem to deco m5. That goes to a switch that feeds my desktop and a 2nd deco puck. There is also a 3rd puck that is connected wirelessly.

After setting up the M2 in bridged mode as an access point I get speeds of .5 Mbps down and 12 up. I'm very green on the ubiquity products, so it's probably something I did.

When checking my regular deco speed I get 417 Mbps down and 17 up.

Not sure if I can connect the m2 the way I did, or if there is a setting I'm missing but something seems off.

    UniFi Dream Machine? Good fit?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 09:00 PM PDT

After researching as much as I could in the sub I think a UniFi Dream Machine is my best option. Looking for some agreement.

In-laws are about to move in so we'll have: (6) smart phones/tablets (1) Mac (also running Plex server) - can hardwire (1) work laptop (yay work from home) (2) TV streaming devices on WiFi (3-4) Wyze WiFi cameras

Long term I'd like to add some home automation as well but it's on the back burner.

I only have 30 MB down right now and don't intend to change it as I can't get this cheap ($15/month) plan back again if I switch.

So I need to be able to prioritize bandwidth to my work PC.

I also long term want to be able to centrally manage parental/content filtering as my kids get older and have more technology.

So does the UniFi Dream Machine fit the bill?

Secondly, it's a 3-level house with ~1,100 SF per floor. Is just the UniFi Dream Machine enough? Do I need other access points? Use my current old time capsule hardwired in bridge mode?

    Much appreciated to you all.

Edit: about the bandwidth. My current issue is that I cannot support my work video conferencing with the kids streaming Plex locally and my wife on her phone plus the misc WiFi devices. I know I can't stream 6 HD videos on my ISP bandwidth and don't intend to. I'm mostly worried about being able ensure each device at least gets a couple MB each which my current time capsule seems incapable of doing. One stream uses up almost my whole WiFi bandwidth.

MOCA home setup - need pro advice

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 08:46 PM PDT

Hi Reddit. I need assistance with my MoCa set up. Here is my set up. Outside the house I have a Dish Satellite that my father in law uses for TV. Also outside I have Comcast Business class Coax that I use for 80 mpbs internet (80 is what I am paying for).

Outside we have a Spitter. Its a 1 in 4 out coax splitter. The IN is being used be the satellite dish coax which feeds a tv signal upstairs and downstairs.

Outside the house the coax for Comcast pipes directly to a single coax cable that goes directly to the network closet. Luckily this cable can be easily accessed from the outside the house (the splitter is on the outside wall of the house and not in the attic). In the network closet, the Comcast tech used a 3 IN and 2 OUT splitter. The coax carrying the Comcast internet is connected to one of the three "IN" and for the two "OUT" I have one coax going to the Comcast Modem and one to the business class Router. (I think it comes MoCa enabled because it has a Moca light indicator)

My issue is I am confused as to where I conncect my MoCa adapter. At the moment, I have one. I am not sure if I need to purchase a another one. My goal is to have the single coax outlet upstairs connected with the MoCA adapter. This coax,by the way, goes to the 1 IN and 4 OUT splitter i mentioned.

I purchased another MoCa adapter in case i need one. I also purchased a 2 IN and 4 OUT splitter. The logic is, to have the dish and Comcast connected to those INs and as for the 4 out, have one go to the network closet and two other go to the coax downstairs and upstairs.

How should I go about this? Does the MoCa in the network closet connect its coaxial line to the splitter (3 in 2 out splitter), the modem or the coax receiver on the router? I know the ethernet cable goes into the router, that I got.

If this is confusing, i can post pictures.

    Thanks!

Roaming Issues with Nighthawk router + UniFi NanoHD Access Point

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 08:44 PM PDT

    Hello!

I could really use some help here. I have a small apartment in a dense city with a handful of WiFi networks on every channel. I have gigabit internet and a Netgear Nighthawk x10 at the front of the apartment. I get roughly 850/950 hardwired and roughly 350/550 on WiFi at the front of the house. At the back of the house WiFi is practically unusable.

I just bought and installed a UniFi NanoHD in the back of the apartment. I can't get devices to accurately roam in the house. For example, my 2019 Macbook Pro will stick to the Nighthawk signal when in the back of the house. Even after turning WiFi on and off. I've been testing this using iAnalyzeWiFi. The signal strength for 5G shows 40-60% when it is directly next to the NanoHD.

    Nighthawk is set to:

    2.4G: Channel 11, 25% TX strength

    5G: Channel 44, 25% TX strength (I originally tried it at 50%)

    The NanoHD is set to:

    HT20, Channel 6, TX low

    VHT80, Channel 157, TX medium (I also tried VHT40)

What can I do? I'm at my wits end here. If I have to completely overhaul the network with all UniFi gear I'll do it. But I'm really trying to avoid spending money and trying to make this one access point solve my issue. Thank you for any help.

How can I port forward if my router's WAN IP is private instead of public?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 08:27 PM PDT

I'm in China, my provider is China Mobile.

My setup is that I have the modem provided by China Mobile. And I bought an Asus AC1200GU that I plugged into the modem. (the modem is just a modem).

I'm trying to port forward, but I ran into a wall with the WAN IP being private (192....) instead of public. I don't know what to do here. I've read a variety of suggestions in different archived posts, but no one ever gives details. Someone said the NAT is at the ISP level and something about having to buy a static IP???? Someone said I have to forward the ports on the modem (how do you do that?). I don't know what to do.

    Very slow speeds using PIA

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 08:18 PM PDT

I've got a little bit of a complicated setup for my home network; an ATT gateway providing FTTP connection, a mikrotik router setup behind it via IP passthrough, a pihole DNS filter, and PIA setup through the mikrotik router itself, to blanket VPN over the whole network (save a few IPs). With a PIA equipped IP, my speeds are too slow. I've tried switching between all of the US servers, to no avail. I'm testing and configuring through a computer wired to the router. All devices are sluggish with the VPN, nothing loads quickly, and lots of websites fail to load at all. Is there likely a configuration error? I've got Pihole handling DHCP, and pointing to PIA's DNS servers. I don't have a lot of networking experience, this is pretty much my homelab. Any suggestions or likely points of failure here?

Netgear Ethernet powerline 1000 not working

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 08:03 PM PDT

I set up the adapters and I got the unidentified network issue and it told me there was not a valid IP address. I went into command and released and renewed the IP address and it said "an error occurred while renewing interface Ethernet : unable to contact your DCHP server. Request has timed out" I'm totally lost now and I'm getting super frustrated. I bought this thing cause our century link WiFi is taking the sh*t and cuts out every few minutes for about 10 seconds, making it nearly impossible to play any video games.

How do I get the most out of my 1 gig service?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:43 PM PDT

I'd like to beef up my home network but I need help and advice.

I have a 1 gig internet service, but a terrible router for both wired and wifi, and my network switches in the house are horrible for 1 gig connections

1 is it possible to have several 1 gig wired connections on a 1 gig service?

2 What kind of router should I get?

3 will I have to invest in a 10GbE capable router?

4 Am I required to run my connections through SPF+?

5 what kind of network switches should I get and how many?

6 what's the most efficient way to use switches?

How annoying are these questions? lol

So I did a test with Minecraft and hamachi today. About 3-4 hours later, I got to the network tab of file explorer and I see “RalinkLinuxClient”. What does that mean? It does not show up on the list of connected devices in my routers login page?

Did I get hacked? I'm kinda freaking out here

I when I go properties I can see it's MAC address, it's model and manufacturer which aren't that helpful and the model number. Should I post that too?

    Question about mesh setups

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:32 PM PDT

I'm moving to a new place, doing a full refresh of my networking gear (and PC). I was recently convinced of the benefits of doing a mesh setup. I mainly like that I can get a pair of Orbi AX routers and have devices hardwired at both ends, with access points having a dedicated backchannel.

In the past I've segregated my devices to connect to different radios on my router, so that slower devices aren't forcing my AC devices to throttle down. Now with a mesh setup everything is supposed to handle of automatically (when working well). Will the Orbis try and split slower devices off to different radios so that AX devices aren't throttled down to AC/N? For instance when Amazon upgrades the FireStick to AX can I count on that getting full speed if someone else is using the Nintendo Switch (AC)?

Few Questions about WeBoost 4g-x setups

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:30 PM PDT

I am going to be working in a very rural area with no wired internet for the next six months. There is housing provided with the job, and they have already setup a WeBoost 4g-x with a Yagi antenna. The problem is the amplifier is on the opposite end of the building from where my room is. I noticed that you can get an N type splitter on their website.

I have Verizon with an unlimited plan, and I get 5 bars next to the amplifier and don't even get 1 bar in my room. I would like to get a splitter and run a cable to my room. I also would like to not use my phone as a hotspot, if possible I would like to get a router and run Ethernet from it for my desktop. I don't mind having to add a plan to my Verizon account either.

Googling and searching Reddit has given me an idea of what's around, but it's hard to tell as some of the circumstances are different than mine. I figured getting input from other's would be the best bet. What would be the best way to connect a router to the WeBoost?

    RT-AC5300 Port Forwarding Headache

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:29 PM PDT

I'm missing something and it's giving me a headache. I am trying to set up a Minecraft server and make it accessible to the internet. No one seems to be able to access it over the internet (it is accessible locally) and I can't seem to get -any- ports to register as open on any port checking website, even basic ones like 20,21,80,443,53.

    I've checked/tried:

My WAN IP on the router matches my IP on the internet

Windows firewall, including disabling it entirely on the machine.

    Disabling the router firewall

Placing the computer with the server on it in the DMZ

    Turning port forwarding off/on again

    Restarting the router

I also have an RT-N66u acting as a AP and I verified there were no settings in there I needed to change, even though the machine in question doesn't run through it. (I'm new to having an AP)

I also have added a pihole to the network recently, but I don't see any options for blocking ports / services on there. I did try disabling it and testing the ports, though.

    WiFi options

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:22 PM PDT

Hey guys I have a question about getting a new router. The current one I have is a netgear r6220 with roughly 30 devices connected to it, but not being used all at the same time. I live in an apartment that has 3 bedrooms. However, the farthest room from where the router is at does not get good signal. Even a room that is roughly 20 feet away will occasionally buffer 1080p YouTube videos. We usually get 200mbps down and 10mbps up from our internet service. I have a gift card from bestbuy and I have been looking at two routers from there, the linksys whw0102 and the Asus rtac68u. I'm looking to spend around 150 and I know the Asus router says over 200 but they have the same one for 150 that's sold out at the moment. My question is, are either of those good options for my scenario. I usually game and watch 4K movies on Netflix and YouTube.

Router recommendations for 1800 sq ft townhouse

I'm looking for a new router that would preferably be good for gaming. I have 60 down 10 up with 11 devices on the network at once. Only 1 of those is wired. I would prefer to keep it under $150. If there are better ways to handle the network than just one router those recommendations are appreciated also.

Edit: My house is 2 stories.

Fixed wireless internet setup with UAP AC PRO + edgerouter 4 + switch connections help!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:20 PM PDT

I have fixed wireless internet dish on my roof. From the dish to my network closet is Cat6a that plugs into a PoE injector in the PoE port. The other port, LAN, is connected to my EdgeRouter 4's console port. Is this correct so far?

Next, my AP is connected to a separate PoE injector in the PoE port. The LAN port of that injector is connected to the EdgeRouter 4's eth0 port.

    My controller detects no AP.

I know something is wrong and I'm just changing wires and expecting results at this point. Please help!

Run ethernet from patch panel upstairs to downstairs

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:18 PM PDT

I would like to utilize the patch panel in my master bedroom closet to suit my needs better. Appears that currently, it provides ethernet to each of the 4 br all of which are upstairs.

My network consists of a cable modem, connected to a linksys EA6350 which currently resides in the family room with 3 devices connected via ethernet (xbox, media pc and tv). My main PC is in one of the bedrooms upstairs with several drives connected to it with all my media/files. This PC connects via wifi.

I'd like to move my router/modem to the patch panel but then I'd have to get internet downstairs. Would prefer a wired connection for my family room devices. The master is directly upstairs from the family area. Pretty sure there is access if i go out through the wall, outside and up which would lead to the attic crawl space from where I should be able to easily wire it up to the patch panel. This is exactly what the previous owner did when they installed a dish on the roof.

What are my options here? From what I read, there is some risk with running ethernet outside. I don't know if I would be able to go straight down inside the wall from the attic to the same location as the dish coax outlet. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

Can a powerline adapter work with a switch and a router like this?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:31 PM PDT

My goal is to move my WiFi router to the center of the house so it can cover the whole house.

My idea is like this: https://imgur.com/a/pFvErIr (blue is Ethernet cable and red is powerline).

This way I will have hard wire to my console and a single WiFi for the whole house.

Will this work? Will the router be able to assign IPs to the TV and console? How should I config the router? Is it just standard AP mode? Do I connect the powerline adapter to the WAN port on the router or the LAN port?

    Optimal placement for router

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:20 PM PDT

I've recently upgraded my internet service to the "up to 1000mbps" level, my modem to an Arris Surfboard 8200, and my router to a Netgear r6700v3.

Things are improved, but not as much as I would like. I'm wondering if the router is in a bad position. Due to physical limitations (reaching the modem, which connects to the cable) I have the router on a tv table next to other electronic devices (playstation, etc.)

How much interference do you think I'm getting from the other electronic devices? Is it significant or trivial? What are the common solutions for problems like this?

Are all same category Ethernet cables equal?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:00 PM PDT

Just today started crimping my own ethernet terminations to put some cables around my house. Cat 5e and cat 6. I had damaged the connections on these previously and speeds using the cables became 100mbit. Since replacing the ends they now get well above 100mbps and have greenlight on my switch (i.e. gigabit).

My question is if you are getting gigabit and getting anything over 100mbps, is it definitely delivering maximum speed? I'm worried my self made cables may be slower than a pre-made of the same cat 5e / cat 6. I.e. maybe only 600mbps vs ~950mbps.

Or am I just paranoid? I have gigabit fibre internet and gigabit around the house to my server so don't want to miss out on any potential network speed.
