i5-7600k paired with GTX 1070 8gb struggles with GTA V or Witcher 3 at normal settings.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 05:54 AM PST

Hey, just as in the title. I have built a gaming PC about year and a half ago but never really did much of heavy gaming. I used it mostly for educational purposes and to play some not very demanding games.

Recently, I got some more free time and decided to play some triple A titles. I got myself a Witcher 3 as well as GTA V. I tried to run them on normal settings and encountered a lot of microstuttering followed by huge fps drops making these games literally unplayable.

I read some articles about 7600k bottlenecking GTX1070 where some people agree with this theory, whilst others claim there should be no problem running such games flawlessly on ultra settings (or very high) at stable 60fps.

    Here's the setup I'm using:

    • Monitors: Samsung C27FG73FQUXLG (main) and LG 24UD58-B 4K (additional)
    • CPU: Intel i5-7600K 3.80GHz 6MB overclocked to 4.6GHz
    • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming 8GB GDDR5
    • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z270-GAMING K3
    • RAM: GOODRAM 16GB 3000MHz Iridium Black CL16
    • SSD: Samsung EVO860 500 GB (for system and programms) paired with ADATA SU800 256 GB (for games)

Have you ever encountered something similar? I can't seem to find any solution. All my drivers are updated and I don't have any processes running in the background.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

    EDIT: Updated mobo info

EDIT 2: Thank you all for different solutions. I don't really know what helped to fix the issue but here's a quick recap of what I've done.

    1. Ran some benchmark for CPU and watch the temps to see if CPU isn't overheating - It's... okay. I'll be upgrading my cooler soon.
    2. Ran memtest (thanks u/consuminshadows) - 0 errors through 2 passes. I'll leave it overnight to make sure nothing is wrong with RAM.
    3. Scheduled a task to Empty Standby Memory Automatically (thank you u/CaptainnTedd).
    4. Reinstalled both NVIDIA software and GPU software (AORUS ENGINE)
    5. Updated once again all possible drivers.
    6. Optimised games with NVIDIA GeForce Experience software.
    7. Uninstalled NZXT CAM as some people suggested.
    8. Ran a scan for any malware possible wth malwarebytes - none found

Conclusion: Both GTA V and Witcher 3 seem to work WAY better than before. I'm having somewhat stable 60-70 fps on very high settings. I have really no idea what could have fixed it, but for my money, I'm guessing everything had helped in some way.

Updated MSI BIOS.. now M2 is 'inaccessible boot device"

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 06:04 AM PST

    MSI Z370 Carbon Pro Gaming

    i7

    32Gb 3200 DDR4

    Windows 10 on a Samsung 970 Evo M2

Build this system last year with 16Gb RAM. Working A-OK no issues.
At Xmas I added another 16Gb of the same RAM. Since then been getting intermittent crash issues which I'm trying to sort.. but thats a different matter.

Immediate problem is, as part of trying to fix this issue, I decided to update the BIOS from A5 to the latest A10.

Flashed it no problem, and in BIOS everything seems to be working OK.. but I cannot get it to load Windows from the M2 now. I've tried the setting I thought should be OK (UEFI Boot, AHCI sata) and over the past couple of hours have tried every other adjustment I can see might work.

When exiting BIOS I either get an immediate Automatic Windows Repair thing, which is of no help.. or else a 20 second spinning circle which looks like Windows is going to load.. then the keyboard/mouse lose power and a BSOD 'inaccessible boot device'

The M2 is showing up OK in BIOS and is set as the boot devive "UEFI: WIndows Boot Manager: Samsung 970"

The only setting I haven't touched yet is M2/Optane Genie. If I enable this I get a warning about loss of data.. which scares me to turn it off again.

I thought when I build the system there was a BIOS option I had to pick to choose between M2 and one of the PCI lines... but I cant see anything now, and to be fair I could be remembering a different system.

    Any idea?? I'm stumped.

If you're having FPS issues and you don't know why, your first step should be disconnecting your second monitor!

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 11:35 AM PST

This has been said already a couple times but I think it's very important.

Windows 10 has a bug with multiple monitor setups if they have different refresh rates. I don't really know how to replicate it because it only happens sometimes, but whenever you play ANYTHING on your second monitor, Windows will try to bring the FPS of the main monitor to whatever the second monitor is.

Example: main is 144Hz, secondary is 60. You're playing a videogame at 144 FPS, you start playing a youtube video in your secondary monitor and suddenly your FPS get locked to 60 instead of 144.

Sometimes it will just bring your frames from 144 to a unstable range around 100-120. Sometimes it will stop there, sometimes it will end up locking your frames to 60.

As I said, it doesn't happen always, it doesn't always have the same effect and I don't know why or how. But it happens. So make sure you're not playing anything on your second monitor (i.e. have it on your desktop) when troubleshooting lower FPS than expected!

I said "disconnect your second monitor" because it's a way of being 100% sure about your secondary monitor not being your issue.

Finished my very 1st PC build accomplishing a dream I've had for 15 years.

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:19 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it im kinda depressed atm.

That being said i finally did something I've wanted to do since i was 10. I built a computer. And it fucking works! It's not very pretty, I definitely learned something about wire management from this. But i don't think its bad. Not like other bad wires I've seen.

I haven't really used it yet but it runs games i couldn't even play before super smooth and i didn't even try overclocking or anything.

Honestly my point to all of this is if I am able to do this, anybody can do this. There's no reason to feel in their this about jumping into a computer build, except for the money you might sink but that's a personal thing. not only was this super fun but it was so easy.

Thank you to the one person on here who gave me some advice when I 1st started this adventure. I'm going to tag him as soon as I can find their username.

Y'all have a good one. And may your builds run cool and fast.

Edit: I Uploaded a picture to my profile because I didn't know if I had to make an imgur account to upload to them. Once its all set back up I'll upload another pic

Need suggestions and opinions on my build

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:38 AM PST

I want to build myself a pc that performs quite decent at for the current time and that doesn't need an update for next few years. Please give your opinion on the parts I've listed.

    Parts (PCPP-link: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/VvLwDx )
    -CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X
-Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i chromax.black (I am aware that the stock cooler would be fine but it is too high for the case!)
-MB: Asus ROG Strix B450-I Gaming
    -RAM: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 2x16GB DDR4-3200Mhz
-SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB M.2-2280 NVME + 500GB Sata SSD + 1TB HDD (all from my old build)
-GPU: Asus GeForce RTX 2070 8GB Strix gaming
-Case: Phanteks Evolv Shift (in PcPP it only had the air version)
-PSU: Corsair SF 750W 80+ Plat
-Fans: Corsair HD140 2-Pack with controller

    Use case of the pc:
    -Mostly gaming
-But also some CAD rendering and EE-simulations but it isn't the main focus

Additional thoughts on deciding the parts for the build:
-I want the option to build a custom loop in the future (hence the GPU) but I have to do my research on it first
-besides performance/price I also chose the parts to look nice (I know it is stupid, but I am sucker for aesthetics)

Thanks for all your input in advance!

    Edit: Updated the link

Edit 2: Updated the link with new parts based on suggestions
-changed RAM from the 3000Mhz version to the 3200Mhz
-removed M.2 SSD because i totaly forgot that I have a 500GB 960 Evo in my old build
    -increased PSU power

Wife on the warpath. PC approaching its 10th birthday. Best upgrades to keep afloat?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 02:37 PM PST

The title says it all. I was planning a totally new build this year, but I am getting called to task for my profligate spending habits. So what can I do?

I would like to stay under $500 if at all possible. My initial thought is to swap out the mobo, CPU, and memory while holding onto my drives, GPU, case and PSU. A modern gaming monitor is probably out of the question. Happy with my mechanical keyboard and high dpi mouse.

    Currently running:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 (never upgraded)

    ASUS M4A785TD Mobo (never upgraded)

    8 GB DDR3 1600 RAM

Samsung 860 EVO SSD 500 GB

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (lol)

EVGA SuperNova 750 G2 PSU (lol)

    Antec ATX Mid tower case

    Thanks!

My First Experience and Thank you Note

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 06:31 AM PST

Hi everyone, I just want to say thank you for your help and support from I start building PC to choosing parts. This thanks is a bit late since I build my rig July last year, but better to be late than nothing.

So actually this is my first pc built, the first time I buy my personal pc the seller help me built everything. But this time since I move to another city and I give my first pc to my parent, I decided to built my own rig. So what I did as a good pc gamer, I compile my parts of pcpartpicker and then ask you guys on this sub. After spending about a week tinkering with my built and comparing price between different store finally I pull the trigger. I buy some parts locally and some parts from amazon since ram is much cheaper compare to local price. Also I got 20$ google express promotion so I use that to buy ssd.

The building process was quite straightforward, I didn't found any major issue assembling all the parts. One thing bothers me is the local seller doesn't have NZXT H500 white case since I decided to have white and black build. I go to a couple store and every store said the same thing they didn't have it. So in the end I bought the red color one. I'm thinking to paint the red stripe to white. Let me know if you guys know any guide how I can do it.

In terms of experience so far I found it very pleasant. Finally I can play witcher 3 with playable fps and max settings 😁 compare with my first pc which has only ryzen 3 2200G I only got 20-30ish fps with lowest settings 720p. I can create a very big city on City Skylines as well, CS GO runs without hiccup. It just feels so great! Even when I do programming (Android Studio) it runs very fast.

Once again I just want to say thank you for this wonderful community, a place where I can rely on to when I have problem with my build and help me troubleshoot.

Btw here is some pictures for your pleasure. https://imgur.com/a/xYLYrgv

I'm thinking to buy an aftermarket cpu cooler and probably case fans. But currently didn't know what cpu cooler and fan to get. I do some research regarding cpu cooler and planning to get Freezer 34 eSports DUO and maybe a white artic case fan. If you guys have any suggestion or case fan please let me know.

    Upgrading RAM?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:57 PM PST

Might not be the place to ask but here it goes,

I've just built a new PC and forgot to buy two sticks of ram so I currently sit at 1x8gb. I'm going to be upgrading to 2x8gb but my question is how big of a difference will it be in terms of performance? The one I currently have is 2400mhz CL17 and I was hoping to upgrade to a Kingston type ram that is 3000mhz. I currently play games like Modern Warfare at 60fps with an i5-7600k (overclocked to 4.6ghz) and a GTX 1060, how would mi performance change overall if I added another 8gb plus add the extra mhz from buying whole seperate new ram sticks? Cheers

    Color Pixelation Issues

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:29 PM PST

    Hey All,

I just built a pc and downloaded modern warfare last week. For about 5 days now I have had solid game play, 1080p gaming on high quality settings, seamless and enjoyable. Now it seems I'm having some issues. When I load the game, right in the multiplayer lobby I am getting the problems best described by the title of this post. One way I got around this temporarily was by uninstalling the game, reinstalling it and starting it in MW's "safe mode" which greatly decreased quality but at least I could play the game. I'm curious if anyone else if having these problems. I have a slight concern my computers GPU could be at fault (it is an ASUS RX 5700 XT) but being that this card is only being about 50% utilized and isn't having overheating issues like its being known for I'm am completely confused.

Weird Pixelated images. I am failing at my upgrade.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 04:07 PM PST

Examples of what kind of pixelating that I see: https://imgur.com/a/wJmuT4t

I have posted here before due to my drivers not installing for the GPU and these same problems. I replaced the Mobo, RAM, and boot drive. Now I can download my nvidia drivers, but did not fix the other issues. It is quite infuriating because I have been replacing parts back and forth over the past 2 weeks and I still can't pinpoint the problem.

Everything except the storage/GPU are new.

    My build currently:

    • Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 AORUS Elite WiFi
    • CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x
    • Cooler: Stock AMD Cooler (Came with the 3900x)
    • RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z Neo (AMD) Series 32GB DDR4 @ 3600
    • GPU: EVGA GeFore GTX SC Gaming ACX 2.0 [From old build]
    • OS boot: Samsung 970 EVO SSD 500GB
    • Storage: Samsung SSD 500gb & 2x2TB Seagate Barracuda [From old build]
    • PSU: Corsair RM Series 850 Watt (80+ Gold[Fully Modular])
    • Case: Phanteks Eclispse P350X (idk if this matter but why not)
    • OS: Windows 10 Home

A friend told me that those images might be due to my monitor, wires or the GPU itself. However other places say that it might be my PSU.

As I stated before. I replaced everything except the GPU. And it seems more and more that it is that. However I put in my old 660ti and I still had the same issues? Is it because my GPU isn't powerful enough or something else entirely?

    I have tried

    • Different monitors
    • Different HDMI wires, and ports from the GPU
    • Different DP wires.
    • Switched out to a weaker gpu (660 ti) still getting the same issue.
    • Reinstalling my Graphics drivers
    • Replacing RAM, Mobo, Storage.
    • Reinstalled Windows (A total of 5 different times mind you)

The problems that I am now facing...

    • Windows Update Errors
    • Can't access my device manager
    • Pixelated Images
    • Chrome crashing
    • Lag while navigating windows (when I try to search something on the start menu it just wont type but eventually will after a minute or so)

I still can't help but think that I have build this computer wrong. Due to the fact that there should be no issue that my 980 isn't working. I am also afraid that if I invest to a new GPU this problem will just be waiting for me. The same way that I thought my motherboard replacement was going to fix the issue.

    TL;DR

Pixelated images (https://imgur.com/a/wJmuT4t) happen no matter how many time I reinstall windows/drivers as well as having windows update errors. Preexisting problems from before I replaced my RAM/Mobo/Storage. I am lost even more than I was before.

Building a new budget audio production pc, need help.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:37 PM PST

I'm trying to build a new pc to make music with. My budget is somewhere around $600 or lower. My first build I did is starting to show its age (built in 2014, but newer instruments and other plugins are starting to really choke up on this i7 4770 I've been using). I went with an AMD based build because I've seen videos showing some really good performance from people using AMD cpus with their DAWs and some intense virtual instruments. Don't need a crazy graphics card for music production at all so I just picked a cheap one that will work fine because the graphics aren't integrated with the AMD.

So I'm trying to keep it really budget friendly while also making it unlikely to catch on fire. So far my list of parts is what you see below. Is there any way I can improve this list to lower the cost more without sacrificing anything major? I don't have to stick to Amazon though if there are better sales elsewhere, just did that because I have prime.

Also side note, the ryzen 7 2700x was 179 up until recently, does that usually go on sale a lot because I'm so disappointed that I couldn't jump on it then.

    1080p 144hz Ryzen/AMD build

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 09:24 AM PST

    Hi Everyone!

Getting ready to build my first PC...I play a lot of shooters, so FPS will be a priority for me. With that being said, 1440p makes me nervous because I'd like to stick to a $1250 USD budget.

R5 3600x + 5700XT has caught my eye and I believe most builds would end up around 1250 USD.

Is this over kill for 1080 144hz? Does it guarantee me 4-5 years of high performance? Could it handle high frames at 1440p, 144hz?

    Thanks!
