Msi gs65 stealth vs Msi Prestige 15

I'm in the market for a new gaming/ productivity computer for university as well as gaming. Both of these fought my eye as I've heard great reviews for both. I was wondering which one had a higher value for the price and which one y'all would recommend. I was also considering the Msi ps63 but that one doesn't look like it can run some of the more demanding games. If there are any other laptops that you would recommend over these i'de love to see them! My budget is $1300 and would prefer a longer battery life as well as better performance. Thanks!

Portable and modern looking Laptop mostly for programming

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:46 AM PST

    Hi together,

I am looking for a new Laptop, for details, please refer to the form:

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1500€, Germany

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life, nice form factor (no need for 2 in 1), modern appearance

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty Important. I want a portable and modern looking device

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux (most likely Manjaro with KDE) and Windows 10, so a dualboot setup

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No CAD/Video Editing. Eventually light gaming in the future. Mostly Programming so I will be using IDEs (PyCharm, IntelliJ), VMs with Virtualbox and Browsers a lot

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit Keyboard, good Keyboard, Thunderbolt 3 Port

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. at least 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD storage and an i7 or something comparable. As stated above, a modern appearance and a good build quality. Regarding the appearance I thought of something like the IdeaPad (or Yoga in Germany) S740 but had read that it has no good Linux support.

Lenovo Y740 vs HP Zbook 15 G6 for Graphics Designer

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:33 AM PST

Hi everyone, hope you all are having a good day.

So for some context, I've been assigned with getting a laptop for our graphics designer.

In terms of workflow, our designer uses The Adobe Creative Suite: Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects, etc, as well as HitFilm express. In future they plan on using Maya or iClone for characterization.

Their current laptop (can't remember which brand or model it is) struggles to keep up. It has 16GB of RAM , GTX 1050, 7th Gen i7 and a 256 SSD (with a 1TB hard drive).

I've gathered quotes from consulting companies we work with and it comes down to 2 laptops.

    Lenovo Legion 17 Y740 ($3418 US)

    - Intel 9th Gen Core i7 9750H 4.5GHz

    - 17.3" FHD 1920x1080 Anti-Glare 144Hz Display

    - 64GB (2x32GB) DDR4 Memory

    - RTX 2070 8GB GDDR6 Max-Q

    - 512GB Ultra-Fast SSD + 1TB Hard Drive

    HP Zbook 15 G6 ($2740 US )

    -15.6 FHD AG LED 400

    - Intel Core i7-9850H

    - Quadro RTX3000 6GB

    - 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4

    - 512GB PCIe NVMe

My understanding is the Quadro RTX3000 is roughly the same as the RTX 2070 but has "certified drivers, which are optimized for stability and performance in professional applications". My question is for the workflow listed above, is the RTX3000 recommended over the 2070, or is it a comparable experience? And for a overall experience is the Y740 a better machine for the task or should we rather go with the HP? (the price isn't necessarily a problem but the Lenovo is slightly above the allocated budget, which is between $2900 US to $3200 US but an exception can be made)

    Laptop for Gamer Military Student

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 11:06 PM PST

Reddit Experts! I need your help picking the best laptop for the scenario below. Thank you very much in advance!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,500 is preferred, but can go up to $2,000. Laptop would be purchased in the USA, most likely in the San Francisco, California metro area or online.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is important for school assignment purposes, but this will primarily be a gaming laptop, so the best GPU/CPU/RAM for the money is the priority. Something similar to a Dell XPS 15 or the Razer Blade 15?

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness is not very important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming. Anything from Sea of Thieves, to World of War craft. Light video editing, mainly just short travel video clips is also possible.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Anything from Sea of Thieves, to World of Warcraft. 60fps minimum, 144hz refresh rate is preferred.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen would be nice but not required. A reliable build quality is also desired.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My son is in the military and is being stationed someplace where bringing his full gaming PC is not feasible. He is also a college student, spending nearly all of his free time studying, but being able to game with family and friends is his way of recovering and recharging. I wish to get him the best I can afford but I am not up to speed on the latest and best specs, and I need your assistance. I think he was considering something along the lines of the Dell XPS 15 or the Razer Blade 15. It will be carried around quite often, but usually to places where it can be plugged in to charge. Any insight and guidance you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Hi! Looking for a reliable laptop for daily use and CAD modelling + FEM simulations. Will use for some light gaming as well. Price range £1000-£1500.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:41 AM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Price range £1000-£1500 UK. Trying to stick to the lower end of the range.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Best spec for the money

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Don't want anything too bulky. Would like for it to fit in a average sized sleek backpack.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    approx 15 inches

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

CAD - Fusion 360 (I believe it is CPU heavy), Meshmixer (with large stl. models), Solidworks etc. Will use FEM software and extensions as well which is more demanding. Some gaming but not as important.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Gaming mostly includes Total War franchise and 1st person shooters. Not too bothered about their performance but a better performing laptop for CAD will also perform well for games I imagine.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Don't care about touchscreen and fingerprint reader. Comfortable keyboard and touchpad set up. Standard HDMI port if possible, but not essential. Good build quality definitely.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Definitely looking for 16GB of RAM (is 8+8 or 16 more beneficial?) and would be happy to go up to 32 if necessary/budget allows it. A good performing CPU would also be necessary as Fusion 360 is very CPU heavy and I use the software a lot. I am definitely going for SSD storage, preferably around 500GB but can go lower to reduce cost.

I have been looking at this laptop in particular (15.6" VORTEX IX) because I have used it before in a makerspace and found it performed well and was reliable. Sadly, I do not know its individual components' specs. Other suggestions are more than welcomed. https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/VortexIX-15/

Thank you for any advice in advance!

My laptop died. I’m looking for an affordable Replacement.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 09:09 PM PST

I've seen many posts like mine searching through this subreddit but I still wanted to create a thread for more personalized advice.

    Country: USA

My budget: $700-$800 :: I will consider going up to $1000 if the laptop quality is significantly better than its $700-$800 peers and is worth the investment.

Purpose: Programming. I will likely also use this laptop to stream movies or watch YouTube but don't mind taking a hit in quality for a cheaper overall price. I'm the type of person that doesn't mind watching a video in 480p just cause I don't want to wait for the 720p or 1080p version to load.

I will not be gaming on here.

Memory: I'm looking at a minimum of 8GB. 12 or 16 GB sounds nice but I think will drive up the cost. I really won't even need that much because I am not a game designer and will likely not work on much graphics. I know having 16 GB sounds awesome to have a bunch of neat programs running at the same time, but realistically I don't see myself using that much. I may have to switch from chrome to Firefox though. If the price more ram doesn't ramp the prices too much I will highly consider paying for more.

GPU: Can be inferred, but I don't need a state of the art GPU.

Storage: I own an external hard drive which can store up 1 terabyte. I find that most programming projects are not very size intensive, the small ones I'm doing for school.

Processor: I'm looking for a minimum Intel core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor preferably a newer generation version. Although I think i7 and above might be completely unnecessary if not wasted for what I need. I think having a more reasonable "humble" processor can save me a few bucks.

Size: looking for a minimum 12 incher. (That's what she said). But I think 13 inches is the sweet spot. I don't need the likes a huge 18 inch screen, just a screen big enough for split view windows

Portability: not a factor. This laptop will be my desk 99% of the time. I don't care if it shaped like a lego brick, as long as it does it gets the job done.

Battery life: my laptop will probably be plugged in most of the time so battery life isn't a big issue. It is annoying if after 2 years of use the laptop needs be charged after 1 hour without being plugged in.

2 in 1 laptops/ laptop tablet hybrids: I'm not sure how this affects the price, but I'll be using my laptop as a laptop. I don't foresee me taking this to bed with me to watch Netflix in my sheets nor do I see myself needing a touch screen or a stylus which might be handy for some artists but I do not have an artistic bone in my body. I will not compromise paying more for these features, but I do not mind having these features either as long as it gets the job done.

Style: unconcerned. I do not want to pay extra to have a sleek design or special colors. It could be designed like Hello Kitty or Leapfrog for all I care.

Projected usage time: I'd like a laptop that lasts me at least 5 years. My Lenovo think pad t460 died on me after 3 years. It was by all means a good laptop, but I was disappointed with its early demise. ——-

My research from the websites: techradar, Laptop Mag, and PC Mag has led me to these suggestions:

    HP Spectre x360

    Amazon: $1049

A little over my budget but it is highly rated across multiple reviewers

It seems like it is overqualified for my standards but I'm wondering if the investment is worth it for the price tag

    ——

    Dell XPS 13

    $957 at Walmart

    Highly rated over multiple years

    ——

    Huawei Matebook

    $875 at Amazon

I have never heard of this before. It's a Chinese product so I'm wary about the product quality. This is coming from a 2nd generation Chinese dude.

    ——-

    HP Envy 13t

    Price: $ 750

Called a great college laptop and it seems solid by all accounts. What are your opinions.

    —-

    Acer Vivibook S15

    Price: $570 on Amazon

    ——-

    Microsoft surface laptop 3

    Price: $950 at Amazon

    ———

Thanks for sticking with me thus far. I just have a few closing questions.

Is the $800 budget reasonable for what my goals are? Or should I consider paying more for a better investment or less because I do not need all the extra bells and whistles that come with these laptops?

TLDR: practicality > power > portability > style

How important is weight and thinness to you? The thinner the better but also not super important

Looking to buy this laptop but I'm not sure

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 11:25 PM PST

Saw this model of Asus (gx 701, rtx 2080) and it looks like a steal for the amount of stuff you're getting for 2400$.

    https://www.amazon.com/Zephyrus-Pantone-Validated-GeForce-i7-9750H/dp/B07M9SN4CD/ref=pd_aw_vtp_147_12?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07QRGS23Y&pd_rd_r=222d127e-be28-4f15-ae51-e46cc950d994&pd_rd_w=kFK6v&pd_rd_wg=sTKTH&pf_rd_p=5a3bc3b1-4fd2-4de2-8bd7-05abd2710c94&pf_rd_r=ND53Q4ATBGB9NZ7ZP47D&psc=1&refRID=3C8D8WRNTB251FBBD4C0&th=1#aw-udpv3-customer-reviews_feature_div

The only problem is, it's not brand new but used - very new, and it's sold by computer upgrade king.

So what do you guys think? Does anyone have any experience buying used - very good laptops from Amazon? Are they almost brand new?

Dell XPS 15 vs Dell "Inspiron 15 7000"

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 10:29 PM PST

    Hello,

I've been looking for a laptop for school for a while and I think I've sort of narrowed it down to two models. (I'm in Canada and I found both laptops for nearly the same price)

    Dell New Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1

    Dell XPS 15

The specs seem very similar, and I'm sort of leaning towards the 2-in-1 just for the pen feature. But I'm not sure which is actually more worth it for what I'm using it for in the long run. I'll be using the laptop for school, and I'm in engineering. I need a laptop to be be powerful enough for programming, AutoCAD, SolidWorks.. etc. I was looking at gaming laptops, but they're way too heavy for bringing around and are aren't really my aesthetic. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Suggestions help also :)

Should I go for the Macbook Pro 128gb or the Macbook Air 256gb?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 10:20 PM PST

Since the base model macbook Pro offers a slightly powerful cpu compared to the air, I was thinking whether I should go for tht or the macbook air with more storage, which is 256gb. But, my budget right now is 1299 usd, so it's gonna be the macbook air with more storage or the macbook Pro. I'd be using it mostly for productivity work, YouTube, netflix and iTunes. Also maybe some slight gaming like some Minecraft, (less graphically intensive games of course)

And I'm hoping to use this for a good 3 to 4 years. So which one do you guys think I should go for? BTW the base macbook Pro offers the touch bar, which I think is a nice touch to it. I anyways got an external drive to store movies and other stuff.

Total budget and country of purchase: 1299 USD, country is Sri Lanka

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A good battery life and value for money

How important is weight and thinness to you? 2.8lbs to 3lbs

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Mac OS

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Productivity stuff, less graphically intensive games, and Web browsing and netflix

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Great build quality

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Macbook air or macbook pro 128gb

Need a Replacement for my HP Omen 15t (US)

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 04:17 PM PST

I recently decided to finally get a new laptop, and went with the HP Omen 15t with an i7-9750H and a RTX 2060. Sadly though, my laptop got heavily delayed in shipping (it's been almost 2 months now), and I'm planning to return it if HP delays the shipment again.

Point being, I'm looking for a replacement with the same specs for (hopefully) around the same price of ~$1100. Performance comes above all for me, with a good battery life coming in second. Bluetooth would also be a great plus. Form factor, weight, etc. doesn't matter.

    Any suggestions?

What do you guys think about the HP 15 T laptop deal right now?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2020 10:07 PM PST

HP has a deal, and with customizations it ends up being just under 800 bucks for: 10th gen i7 with Nvidia MX130 (2GB) 8 gigs of ram 1080p screen 512 SSD Backlit keyboard

I am a student looking for a solid laptop that will last me a bit, be able to do some light gaming and video editing, and not break the bank in the process. Is this a deal I should take advantage of, or too good to be true? Thanks so much for your help!
