Posted: 01 Mar 2020 12:37 AM PST Recently my girlfriend's friend needed to do a lot of typing work instead of just using her tablet. My girlfriend decided to help by having her use her very old laptop. But the version of Windows was way out of support and it ran like a dog even when she stopped using it years ago. I had spoken about Linux enough that she asked me about it the other day and I suggested a couple of distros and explained how to make a bootable USB from the iso. My girlfriend just sent me this message: Feels good. :-) [link] [comments] |
Running a Linux app on Windows? Posted: 01 Mar 2020 07:59 AM PST There's a fractal generating app that I'm a huge fan of called Flam3, but it looks like they no longer make Windows binaries for the application (you can find the current download here on Github). It looks like I could compile my own binaries for Windows, but I have no idea how to do that. OR I could run the application in either a VM or using Windows Linux Subsystem - and I have no idea how to properly do either. (From my mediocre research, it looks like running the application using WLS means that I would not be able to use Cuda to take advantage of my GPU, which sounds like an advantage for this kind of application). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Mar 2020 09:10 AM PST I did the switxh about 24 hours ago, windows 7 crashed and burn, and I rolled manjaro. A roller coaster of up and downs.... i still dont know what i am doing. Youtubube freezes and crash everytime i open it, the fan is making a weird noise.... no clue where to turn spacd on, or pacman.... I dont know where to turn... youtube seems to fail me this time... i regret this switch at this moment, but Windows 7 gone. So I hope this is part of the learning process that will be forgotten in a few weeks.... [link] [comments] |

Regarding "NOT FOR BEGINNERS" Recommendations Posted: 01 Mar 2020 03:57 AM PST . *[UPDATE/Follow-up]* -- Everyone's help with this has definitely been painting a clearer picture for me, and it's all very much appreciated ... thanks again. = = = = = = = = = = I've been toying around with-- and hanging potential future hopes upon --a couple of Linux distributions that made early impacts on me: "Mandriva" (continuing to follow its successor "mageia" project) and "PCLinuxOS" -- mainly (initially) because at the time these were the only two distros of the various ones I'd tried that made it possible to play "flash" videos in "LiveCD" test mode... so yes, that one thing alone left a very lasting impression. But now, with support ending for "Windows 7" (and my utter refusal to "downgrade" to any of its successors), I'm toeing the line of seriousness & determination with the intention to finally take the full plunge. Yet, being someone who has only periodically "played around" with various Linux distributions in the "LiveCD/DVD" environment-- and that mostly to engage in online activities --I'm still not entirely sure what to expect or how to get full use out of it. I've been periodically watching review/instruction videos about how to adopt & use Linux, but I'm conflicted by something. As many promoters of Linux claim that all distributions are essentially the same, save for differences in desktop environments, package managers, etc., other promoters, and even some of the same ones, will just as quickly say that certain distros are "not recommended for beginners" -- placing some distros such as "mint" or "ubuntu" on the "user-friendly" end of the spectrum, and those such as "Arch" and "fedora" at the opposite end. So my question is: What EXACTLY does it mean when a Linux distribution is "best for beginners" -- or what functions/features determine whether a distro is non-beginner-friendly or not? Thank you very much for assisting me in demystifying this seeming dilemma... and I hope to find myself getting started with a new Linus system relatively soon. [link] [comments] |
Best way to reduce size of photography folders Posted: 01 Mar 2020 07:41 AM PST Hi all, Looking for some opinions and advice here. I have around 10 years of photography images and video which total around 250GB. I want to keep most of it but also want to reduce the size so I can upload to cloud storage backups (have 200GB gdrive)
Is the best solution to write a script to loop through folders and reduce size of each image, convert RAW to jpeg etc? Any tools already out there? [link] [comments] |

openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE login manager freezes on password entry. Posted: 01 Mar 2020 02:06 PM PST I updated openSUSE Tumbleweed to the latest packages and later rebooted. However, instead of what I configured, which is not requiring a password to launch KDE after initially entering the LUKS disk encryption password, it goes to the login manager displaying my default user. I entered my password and it froze. It looks like it's trying to log in, but none of the buttons work and the password field is no longer editable. The only things that work are the cursor and pressing the power button to shut down the system. It does this every time without ever launching KDE. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what's going on or how to fix it? [link] [comments] |
Linux .deb installer for an old game Posted: 01 Mar 2020 01:53 PM PST I recently bought the pixel-book go Chromebook. I installed the Linux (beta) and accessed the terminal. I was curious if I could download and old game that I knew was open source (Tiberian Sun). I was able to find and download the .deb installer file for the game. I moved the file to my Linux folder and clicked "install with Linux (beta)". The game installed and looked like it also updated something for wine. The game now appears as an icon in my application list but when i click on it the game will try to boot but never ends up bringing up a new window. It just sits "spinning" and wont boot. Any help would be much appreciated! Edit 1: I am able to easily download and use something like "DarkTable" [link] [comments] |
Accidentally deleted OS, can’t boot USB from grub. Posted: 01 Mar 2020 01:47 PM PST I feel I should mention I'm not entirely new to Linux, but this is an error I'm struggling with finding answers to. I've been using Elementary OS for about six months while it's been fun, an issue with telegram led me to want to change to something like Mint, which I had used briefly in the past but just from taking a look at the various Debian-based distros. I'm also familiar with Windows, and since it's more widely used I thought I'd give it a shot. I'd read online you can boot and install a new OS without a USB or disk, as I'd lost my old USB this seemed like the best possible option as Elementary OS was mostly unusable at this point. I installed unetbootin, and in hindsight should have actually created a new partition, but instead I assumed that unetbootin did something to that extent. Anyways, I installed Mint 19 and booted from my computer without issue, I'd installed Mint on a friend's computer before so it felt familiar. I set up some settings, and got to the point where I set up the partition for Mint. I had a 499gb partition for Elementary OS, and attempted to split it enough for to install Mint on it. This did not work, so rather than cut my losses I tried to delete the partition entirely, resulting in it working briefly, before Mint notified me that it could no longer connect to the kernel. I was sent back to the partition screen, where a 500mb partition for Elementary OS remained. I was told to reboot, I did, and now I'm unable to access anything at the moment except for Grub 2.02. I have a new drive with Mint on it which I made from unetbootin on a friend's laptop. I cannot access it from the boot menu. System recovery sends me straight to grub. All my data was backed up prior to this and I can access it as soon as I get the laptop running so no worries there c: My laptop is a HP 15-bs2xx. If this helps. I do not know where to go from here, any help is appreciated and I will answer any questions. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Mar 2020 08:23 AM PST I would like to get text from an audio file. Are there any easy to use way to transcribe audio file to text? I tried Mozilla DeepSpeech but I had a hard time understanding how it works in the terminal and where the text file is after the transcription. It would be nice if it is open source and I have control over the data. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Mar 2020 11:41 AM PST I am wanting to run Linux from Virtual Box so I can test out some distros. What is the minimal size USB would I need? Are there any instructional videos on how to do it? I am running a late 2013 MacBook Pro. [link] [comments] |
Want to switch from Windows 10 to Linux, need help. Posted: 01 Mar 2020 02:45 AM PST After experiencing numerous problems with Windows 10, I've finally decided to make the switch. I know one of the main attractions of Linux is that it's open sourced but I think it's too open sourced for me. I just really want a Windows 10 replacement that would allow me to play games and do my normal tasks with my PC. Is there like a complete step-by-step guide to installing Linux and making it feel like it's just a normal desktop? don't really want to mess around with kernels and codes for now. Question about Distros and dual booting from someone interested in switching to Linux. Posted: 01 Mar 2020 10:56 AM PST I've been wanting to get into Linux for years now. It's always interested me, but it's always had too many downsides for me to seriously consider it. But now, with things like proton it seems like the majority of things I use on Windows, I'd be able to use on Linux. So, what would be the best distro to use? I'd love something light, but beginner friendly & customizable. I've seen distros like Pop! OS and Manjaro being recommended, and I've tried Ubuntu and mint before, tho very briefly. After that, I'm interested in knowing, how hard is it to set up a dual boot with windows? How stable would it be? It would be great if I still had the ability to use Adobe Creative Cloud programs, such as Photoshop & Illustrator. And anything else I'd need to know about distros and dual boot or something like that for starting out. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Mar 2020 10:35 AM PST I'm running a fresh (dual boot with W10) install of Fedora 31 Workstation, and after my machine boots, I get this error message: output of: fwupdmgr get-updates output of fwupdmgr get-devices I decided this must be something to do with my dual boot install, or at least that's my best guess, so I resolved to disable fwupd all together by entering systemctl disable fwupd. I got no errors from that so I restarted my machine, all to have the same error message appear. What did I do incorrectly? If it's any help - [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Mar 2020 09:49 AM PST So I have manjaro kde installed, and I want to install the awesomewm version instead. The problem is I can't just install awesomewm and switch window managers, because last time I tried that it broke my media keys. So, is there a way of having both versions of the distro (to transfer my files and then delete the kde version), or is there a way to switch window managers more safely? [link] [comments] |

I want to clone my set up from my desk top to my laptop. I have a few questions about using apt clone, My desktop is amd nvidia, my laptop is using intel, Will I run into issues using apt clone to copy all my installed packages? I am assuming that apt-clone will only install packages that were installed using apt, is there a way to automatically install things that were manually installed? such as oh my zsh and powerlevel10k, or things installed with rbenv or npm? If anyone here has experience doing such a thing I would really appreciate it if you could share your experience or drop a tip. Thank you for your time -giwhS [link] [comments] |
Where do you get software from? What's the most convenient and safest way? Posted: 01 Mar 2020 04:51 AM PST I have used Linux for about three years but not really installed that many packages since most that I have needed for daily use was already bundled with Ubuntu (more specific software I had to use is usually for windows). But where should I go to install software? The Ubuntu Software Center? When I use Apt-get, it downloads the software from a different repositorie? [link] [comments] |
