How do you communicate with your users?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 11:02 AM PST

Having a good communication with users, and good means for the users to submit bugs and feature requests are great things to have for an app. I am about to release an app to the internal alpha channel on Google Play, and indeed it requests a web page or email address to contact the developer.

I would ideally have a solution where:

    1. Users can communicate with me, as well as with each other.
    2. Have a bit of an "issue tracker" like functionality, or in some capacity be able to function as such.
    3. Be as hassle free as possible to register/log in to, preferably using a Google account since being Android users they probably already have that.
    4. Preferably not requiring me to have to run and maintain it on my own website.
    5. Not cost $100/month.

    I have considered different options:

    • Just using an email address. This is a bit limiting, especially since other users won't be able to see and participate in each others' discussions.
    • Google groups. This could be a great option, but it seems a bit clunky and to be honest feels a bit abandoned.
    • Facebook group. This could work, but does not comply with #3. Also, I subjectively don't like Facebook very much, at least for this purpose.
    • Create a public repository on bitbucket or gitlab with no source code and only use the issue tracker. This could work, but I do not know if it is within the terms of service for bitbucket/gitlab. They both have Google login.
    • Create a sub reddit for my app. Could work (although probably a bit overkill), but does not comply with #3.
    • Host some forum or issue tracker solution myself. I have looked at Discourse, which looks great. An ideal solution would be an affordable discourse hosting solution which also provides login with Google.

Any ideas or suggestion with regards to this?

Need help making a custom seamless wallpaper

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:35 PM PST

So basically, I have an LG G8 Thinq and with it comes a few stock seamless wallpapers. They are basically an mp4 that is paused at the beginning when the phone is locked and when its unlocked it plays through at stays at the end.

I've never made my own apks so in a random attempt to make a custom wallpaper for it I download the apk and replaced the video and backup img for it with my own custom stuff. But when installing the apk onto my phone after the modifications it fails and i'm not sure how to fix it.

    Example of seamless wallpaper: (https://youtu.be/dgFTWUvnj5g?t=527)

    Where I got the apks: ( https://www.droidviews.com/lg-g8-thinq-wallpapers-live-wallpapers-and-system-apps/ )

    Thanks for your help

Android Dev Older Books Still Viable?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 04:01 PM PST

So, a while back I had picked up a couple books for Android Game Development. They both seem a bit outdated as they were written when JDK 7 was around.

I'm wondering if anyone has utilized these books in their self learning adventure and if they recommend sticking with them, or picking up something different? I'm all ears!

2 suspended apps, what to do next?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 03:05 AM PST

I have a google developer account with 2 suspended apps (got both suspensions in my first month (and same day) ~2015..), so i assume that a third suspension means my account termination.
I plan to upload some real games, but I'm afraid making a mistake leading to my third suspension and hence banned for life.. is it possible to make a second account (with same admob and same credit card?) and upload some new apps? or the strikes count will be counted as a "3rd strike" and ban my accounts?

Should I learn Flutter or native Android development?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:44 PM PST

Hi, I've done some basic iOS development, although there's still a lot to learn. However, the other day I came across Flutter, which can be deployed on both Android and iOS.

What are the disadvantages of using Flutter for Android development over Android's native Java? Is it worth investing in learning Flutter?

Feedback for Buffer's "Clean Architecture" template?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 08:19 AM PST

There is this "clean architecture" template by Buffer from 2-3 years ago. It has quite a bit of starts on GitHub.

I wonder whether anyone here actually used it in real production app and how it performed for you.

    Best Emulator for multiple instances?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 09:47 AM PST

Hello, Id like to ask about an android emulator which can handle multiple instances, just for launching youtube on it.

Ive used NoxPlayer, managed to open 3 instances and maintain stability.

Android Studio gave me only 2 instances while maxing out my ram. BTW Ive used the absolute minimum specs for each emulator/instance.

    My specs: i3-3240, 6gb ram, 1050 2gb, win 10

    Searching for the newest file

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 09:45 AM PST

Hi, I would like to know if there is some way to programatically know which file in a directory is the newest.

Name files are dates (yyyy-MM-dd_kk-mm-ss), so this can make it easier?

I guess there is a lot of ways of doing this, but I'm asking here because I would like to know the best way.

    Thanks everyone!

How to correctly scale custom thumb for a switch widget?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 08:59 AM PST

How to correctly scale custom thumb for a switch widget?

I've a custom thumb set from a drawable for a Switch widget inside a LinearLayout. I can't get it to show correctly on all kinds of screens. On most screens, it looks like this-

    correct

Which is fine, but on some screens (example - 440 dpi), it'd look like this-

    wrong

How do I get this to look uniform across all screens? I've tried many things, including switchMinWidth, setting android:width= to 0dp, using thumbTextPadding but nothing works. Everything has the exact same result, it works on some screens but not on others.

Here's my Switch widget placed inside a LinearLayout with a layout_weight of 2. There are usually 5 widgets in each Horizontal LinearLayout but this specific one has 4 as Switch is supposed to take 2 slots.

     <Switch android:id="@+id/btndegreerad" style="?android:attr/borderlessButtonStyle" android:layout_width="0dp" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:layout_weight="2" android:background="@drawable/degree_rad_track" android:showText="true" android:switchTextAppearance="@style/SwitchTextTheme" android:textAppearance="@style/TextAppearance.AppCompat.Body1" android:textOff="@string/btnrad" android:textOn="@string/btndegree" android:thumb="@drawable/degree_rad_thumb" android:thumbTextPadding="@dimen/_3sdp" android:thumbTint="@color/colorSwitch" android:track="@drawable/degree_rad_track" />

    Here's the degree_rad_thumb drawable-

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"> <item android:state_checked="false"> <shape android:shape="rectangle"> <size android:height="@dimen/_38sdp" android:width="0dp"/> <corners android:bottomRightRadius="10dp" android:bottomLeftRadius="10dp" android:topRightRadius="10dp" android:topLeftRadius="10dp"/> </shape> </item> <item android:state_checked="true"> <shape android:shape="rectangle"> <size android:height="@dimen/_38sdp" android:width="0dp"/> <corners android:bottomRightRadius="10dp" android:bottomLeftRadius="10dp" android:topRightRadius="10dp" android:topLeftRadius="10dp"/> </shape> </item> </selector>

Here's also degree_rad_track, though this is probably not needed-

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"> <item android:state_checked="false"> <shape android:shape="rectangle"> <solid android:color="@color/colorFadedPrimary"/> <corners android:bottomRightRadius="10dp" android:bottomLeftRadius="10dp" android:topRightRadius="10dp" android:topLeftRadius="10dp"/> </shape> </item> <item android:state_checked="true"> <shape android:shape="rectangle"> <solid android:color="@color/colorFadedPrimary"/> <corners android:bottomRightRadius="10dp" android:bottomLeftRadius="10dp" android:topRightRadius="10dp" android:topLeftRadius="10dp"/> </shape> </item> </selector>
