Making an old PC into a modern gaming PC Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:30 AM PST So here's the deal. I don't have a lot of money. I have an Asus I got back in 2016 that has 16 GB of RAM, a 2TB hard drive, an i5 4460s processor, and I put a Chinese made gtx 960 I got off of eBay like 2 years ago. It's okay for games, but the card is a knockoff cheap thing and sometimes the games I play look "eh" at best. I don't need a monster PC with 4K visuals, insane frames per second, of even ultra settings. I'd be happy with medium/high settings at 1080p and a smooth 80FPS. What card should I toss in to ensure my gaming experience is a good one? I know you'll probably tell me to buy a gaming PC or build one, but budget is tight right now. Would games run if I toss a 1660 super or TI into this machine? I play Elder Scrolls Online, Neverwinter, DOOM 2026, WoW, Diablo 3, Battlefield 5, Fallout 4 and would branch out into other kinds of games. Will I be fine? What do you guys think? XFX 5700 Noctua edition (i put Noctua fans on my 5700) Posted: 12 Feb 2020 04:31 AM PST Default fans are so loud, I removed and slapped Noctua on my 5700 DD running at 1980mhz, 1.05V. Both fans are runs at 1300rpm and 1100rpm max. Get similar temperatures at muuuuch lower noise level. This isn't meant to OC, for that, I'll need higher rpm fans, I just wanted less noise coming from my computer. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:07 PM PST I currently have a pc with these specs: CPU: i5-6400 MotherBoard: msi Z170A gaming m3 GPU: Asus GTX 1060 6g turbo RAM: Hyperx (1×8GB) DDR4 3000 SSD: Kingston uv400 240G Power Supply: Nos Hummer 650W Bronze Edition Case: Nox Hummer MC I'm thinking of upgranding my current PC, since it's almost 4 years old. I was thinking of buying a new Board and the ryzen 5 3600x and maybe a rtx 2060 and more 8GB of ram. What do you guys think about it?And what would you do if you here in my place? [link] [comments] |
First build, ready to spend too much money. Posted: 12 Feb 2020 01:40 PM PST First build, finally trying to fulfill a childhood dream of building a really solid gaming PC. Please share any thoughts or suggestions, I'm new to PC building...please be gentle. [link] [comments] |
I totally dont understand how to choose RAM. Posted: 12 Feb 2020 09:09 AM PST The longer I informed myself the more I got confused. I need 16gb of DDR4 Ram. I dont care about RGB. I can spend up to 80€. (≈87USD) mainboard: MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max Is 4x4gb smart? Is 2x8gb 3200mhz CL16 a good choice? A Kit i was interested in says 2x8gb 3200Mhz 16CL (16-18-18-38). What does (16-18-18-38) mean? Is it scam? Will my mainboard (MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max) support this Ram? [link] [comments] |
Is an i7 9700k even worth considering? Posted: 12 Feb 2020 09:47 AM PST I'm going to be upgrading my processor very soon and I was wondering if the state of processors were good enough to upgrade and wondering if there was any reason to consider upgrading to an i7 9700k considering how good the ryzen chips have been. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts. [link] [comments] |
2070 super only getting 150fps on low settings Posted: 12 Feb 2020 01:51 PM PST I got a 2070 super and I'm only getting around 140-150fps on low settings on r6 and my frames are pretty low on other games. I have a Ryzen 5 2600 which may be the culprit but I really don't wanna upgrade my cpu. If anyone know anything about this help would be appreciated :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2020 03:23 PM PST How does the ryzen 5 3600x ($160 on sale) compare to the ryzen 7 2700x ($140 on sale). And how do they compare to the i5-9600k (which I currently have)? I was thinking about an AMD build. This is for gaming [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:35 PM PST Beginner here so please direct me in a better direction if it's needed. I'm about to order all the parts in a couple hours, but i'd appreciate to know if there's anything that should be reconsidered. [link] [comments] |
AMD Ryzen 3600 CPU Running Hot with Stock Wraith Spire Posted: 11 Feb 2020 06:33 PM PST Posting this here in case any other first time builders have the same issue I did and go looking around Reddit for an answer. So after building my first ever PC this weekend I was a bit concerned when I saw my 3600 on my B450 Max MOBO was running at about 55-60°C at idle and around 80°C when running a game for about 30 minutes. I thought maybe the stock CPU fan (a Wraith Spire) wasn't on tight enough so I opened up my case to check it out. Turns out the backplate on the MOBO had fallen clean off and the CPU fan was just hanging there from the stickiness of the thermal paste on the CPU! Fixed it and temps came down to about 45° at idle and 60-65° under load. [link] [comments] |
What's the best USB wifi adapter I could get for around $40? Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:26 AM PST I've been using ethernet since I've had my build but I recently switched houses and ethernet is no longer an option. My graphics card covers the PCI-E slot so unfortunately I cannot use that. Seems as if my only option is to go USB. Any recommendations for anything I could find on Amazon? Thanks! IDK if this is the right sub, but I need help finding some components, I don't know what to look for Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:07 PM PST I would like to buy a (preferably black ribbon style) CPU power extension, as the hardwired to my power supply is too short for good cable management. I just don't know where to look to find one. I also wanted some case RGB lights, but don't know where to look or what to search. Also, how do they connect? Do they connect through a USB header or with an RGB header? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2020 04:05 PM PST This is my boot drive. I just took my old pc apart and I'm only reusing the ssd. Is this going to be a problem? [link] [comments] |
New Built Computer - Additional Fans & Placement Question - Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic Posted: 12 Feb 2020 01:47 PM PST Hey, I built a computer yesterday and set it up and everything is going great, except I dont think I planned out the fan requirements. The case didn't come with any fans and I didn't realize until I opened the box. I set everything up and now I am thinking about fan placement and not really sure what to order and how to set it up. Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic ATX The computer has been idling around 48 and then 55 while downloading a game on steam. I think I need more fans, as I haven't tired under load yet. What do you think ? Do I need more airflow? What I think would be best, are 2 fans at the bottom for intake and 2 fans at the top for exhaust. One fan pointing towards the GPU and another fan over by the radiator. Next question, what fans should I be buying? I want high quality, QUIET fans. I don't want a noisy computer. Maybe I only need 2 fans total. I was told Noctua fans are really good. Fan (noctua): https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07CG2PGY6 Here are a couple pictures to give you ideas on the case Thanks for your help [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2020 01:42 PM PST I am about to order stuff for my first pc build But then i noticed the psu i chose has 2x 6+2 pin. But the card i want needs 8 pin + a 6 pin connection Can i just plug in a 6+2 pin and a 6 pin leaving the 2 pin hanging there ? [link] [comments] |
Portable Powerhouse Build - An ITX, Ryzen 3800X, 2070 Super Build, looking for input. Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:45 AM PST Hi all, I've been working on a build and I think I just about have it where I want it. I'm just looking for some extra eyes and input before I start working on acquiring the parts. I've been in the Simple Questions threads for a while, but I wanted to make one big post since it's no longer simple. The goal with this build is to have a semi-portable powerhouse build. I live in a very long home, that's just how they are in this particular US city. I live with my partner, and as such have wanted to share games with them. The living room and the office, where my current PC lives, are on opposite sides of the house. I've tried to make due with a Steam Link, but nearly every time I've tried it's ended in frustration and not being able to play the game. I also have a multitude of co-op games on Steam that I've just not been able to share due to these issues. Since my current build is aging out of usefulness, I've decided to bite the bullet and build a new PC, as cutting edge as I can afford. My goal with the new build is to have a 4K editing/gaming hybrid machine that I can easily move from room to room, only needing to connect power and display and minimal setup time. Specs-wise, I want 1440p ~120Hz in the office (hence the new monitor in the build), and 4K 60Hz in the living room. The PC will largely be used for gaming, though I do pick up some video editing work from time to time due to the ebb and flow nature of workloads in my main career. That's largely why the build has the beefy CPU and RAM. I figured I'd spend about ~$2500 on a new build, but obviously if I can save money here or there without sacrificing power or reliability by swapping out a couple of components, that's great too. I also plan on sitting on this build for a few months and buying parts on sales when possible. I know in particular the monitor drops ~$70 periodically. A few concerns I still have are:
I appreciate any input, it's a huge buy in cost and I'm super nervous about not getting this right or not considering everything. I don't want to get to build day and have to stop somewhere in the middle to deal with an unforeseen issue, I do have a cat... [link] [comments] |
Might not be the right place, but I think my system is being bottlenecked. Hard. Posted: 12 Feb 2020 03:38 PM PST Hey so for the past few weeks ive been playing doom and the witcher 3 on max settings, 1080p and my fps averaged anywhere from 100-144 on tw3 and 80-144 on doom. Recently decided to install rivatuner and afterburner and monitor my temps and stuff and saw that my cpu and gpu usage on doom is very low, around 30-50 percent gpu and 40-60 percent cpu usage. I also tested doom on the highest graphics and the lowest graphics, and there was literally no difference in FPS. I still think something is bottlenecking my whole system. Would be extremely thankful if someone figured this out. EDIT: Forgot to add that i have a 5 3600 and 2070 super. [link] [comments] |

WD Black makes constant annoying knock sound - alternatives? Posted: 12 Feb 2020 03:28 PM PST Hey, I bought a WD Black 4 TB Drive and it makes that annoying knock sound every 5 seconds which should "extend the lifespan of the drive". I've sent the drive back and got a new one, but it still has this knock sound. It's really loud since the rest of my PC is pretty quiet. So I'm thinking about just getting a WD Blue instead? I'm gonna use it for Gaming, Music Production and weekly backups of my SSD. So these are all things where performance is beneficial. Is there an alternative for the WD Black? I don't trust Seagate at all, since I've read and experienced that they actually fail way more often than WD drives. So I think the only alternative is the WD Blue, right? But the Blue only has 5400 RPM... Does the WD Gold make this weird sound, too? What do you think? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2020 11:30 AM PST This is probably not a common question. I've moved away from home (through plane) to work abroad and won't be back for an unknown amount of time (maybe a year, maybe more). I was trying to get my PC shipped here and even thought about just converting it to a mini itx PC which didn't work. since my older laptop (that I now use for gaming) is slightly dying I decided to get myself a mid range laptop (2060 + i5 9300h) for £850. Now I have a £1000+ PC just working as paper weight back in my parents house with a 2070 + 2700x. Now I love this PC, but I don't really know what is the point of keeping it since it will probably lose its value. Even if I return home in about a year is it worth selling this type of hardware with the chance that I might have to rebuy it if I return sooner? I would probably sell it for around £750 so I could lose some money. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Upgrading from AM3+ to AM4 and 3rd gen AMD Posted: 12 Feb 2020 01:01 PM PST Hello buildapc, I'm currently running a AMD FX-8350 with a RX-480. I'm looking to upgrade to a Ryzen 5 3600X and a RX 5700 XT with a B450 mobo. However, when I create the build on pcpartpicker, I get a compatibility warning about 'B450 mobos requiring an update that may require a different CPU supported by the older BIOS version'. With the RX-480 I currently have, is it possible to upgrade to a third generation AMD 3600X without running into these compatibility problems? Should I be looking at a different motherboard? Or can I not upgrade directly to 3rd gen AMD CPU's at all? Many thanks. [link] [comments] |
Build review, all suggestions welcome Posted: 12 Feb 2020 03:03 PM PST This is my first build in awhile, ill be using my PSU (Corsair VS600) from my old machine but otherwise, is this a reasonable build for the price? Only new game im interested in is Cyberpunk, otherwise I only really play Blizzard titles, Destiny 2, things like that. Any recommendations welcome especially if its more bang for the buck!
