    Simple Questions - February 02, 2020

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:10 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I put together a brand new build with all brand new parts, nothing reused. Did a clean install of Windows 10. All drivers have been installed from the ASUS website, as well as for the other components. Windows is updated to the latest version. A majority of the BIOS settings are set to Auto, and no overclocking has been performed. The RAM has its XMP profile applied. BIOS updated to version 1201.

As seen in the benchmark results, almost nothing is performing as expected. The system is laggy, stutters, and is all-around slow. I initially thought it was an issue with my NVMe, however I've come to realize that almost nothing works properly, as indicated by the benchmark results.

I've tried different drivers, reinstalling Windows again, ensuring all components are seated correctly, changing slots for RAM and GPU, resetting BIOS, updating BIOS to the latest available version, enforcing PCIe 3.0 x4 on the NVMe drive in BIOS as the motherboard was applying PCIe 1.0 x4 for some reason, changed power settings to maximum performance, and triple checked power connections to all components.

I'm not sure if I lost the silicon lottery in every conceivable way, or if there's something I'm doing entirely wrong. If there's any information any of you need, feel free to ask. I just don't know what to do. I purchased these parts about a week ago, with all parts coming from either Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy, so I'm (presumably) within the return period should I need to try and exchange my parts.

What should I do to further diagnose this and/or fix it? My primary assumption at this point is that the motherboard itself is bad. Only conclusion that I can reasonably come to considering literally every component is not functioning as expected.

Edit: If it's another clue, I'm not sure if it's standard behavior or not but even in the UEFI BIOS it's EXTREMELY laggy. Like the mouse stutters around, the screen even lags during scrolling. Not sure if that can indicate what's wrong any further. To me, it indicates bad motherboard or processor but I could be wrong.

Did the salesman up sell me or did he provide good advice? (build advice)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 01:51 PM PST

Today I went into the computer store, intending to buy a new mobo (asrock b450) and processor (2700x), to put into my old gateway fx 6860.

However, based only on the fact that he said a good WiFi 5 chip would cost the same amount as the mobo upgrade, I bought the MSI b450 gaming pro copper ac mobo instead.

I then of course needed to buy ram for the mobo, he recommended Corsair vengeance 3000mhz, 2x8 gb.

From there, he mentioned that no new mobo would fit into my gateway case, due to the hole patterns (or something like that). So, I ended up buying a new case (deepcool matrexx 55), and then from there a new power supply (evga 600 gd) and three deep cool rf120 fans.

Essentially I walked out with a new build, but I will be using the Radeon 5770 gpu from my old gateway and my own ssds.

I paid $750 Canadian after tax.

What do you think, did he give good advice? Are there any areas I could have saved money on?

Why is my PC still loud even when I got new Noctua

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 12:41 PM PST

Ever since I boight my pc fan noise has been an issue so after being recommended Noctua I boight a noctua LH 9I low profile cpu fan and a noctua NF P12 redux 1300 PWM high performance cooling fan 4 pin 1300 RPM case fan. And my PC still gets pretty loud and no where close to the silent the reviews claim. I think its the case fan that gets really loud, its omly on GTA omline not even games that would fully test my PC. Anyone any recommendations for another case fan I can try which I can hopefully find oit if its a PC issue thanks. Also its not the gpu making the noise

    Built my first PC

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 02:28 PM PST

Spilled some coke on my keyboard and now it's got some problems.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 12:24 PM PST

I don't know if this is the right place to post this. A few days ago I spilled some coca-cola on my table and a small amount of it flowed on my corsair k70 mk. 2 mechanical keyboard with brown switches. A bunch of crazy stuff started happening like the resolution changing, windows minimizing and maximizing and volume changing if i recall correctly.

First I unplugged the keyboard, removed the keycaps, wiped it with some paper towels and left it on its side to dry. The next day when I plugged it in everything seemed fine at first but then I noticed that when I pressed some select buttons they usually among other things pressed other buttons. All the buttons on the left (esc, §, tab, caps, shit, and control), f12, the "lock key" and 7 on the numberpad had these problems. In addition sometimes the lights would go out, except for some keys which went red for some reason. control and the lock key seemed to mess with the lights too in addition to pressing other keys.

After this I disassembled the keyboard by unscrewing the screws on the front and taking the back out. Then I wiped the circuitry behind the buttons and the plastic back part with a dry towel. I left it to dry upside down and disassembled like this and then put it back together and tested it again in about 24 hours. Nothing changed.

It's been about a day since then and it was drying upside down that time too. It still doesn't work and I really don't know what to do anymore.

Also I'm not a native English speaker so sorry for any errors.

Everything is connected properly from my POV but I'm not getting any display from my monitor. I've tried resetting the RAM, cleared CMOS battery, unplugging everything in the back and pressing the power button down for a few minutes.

Mixing c15 ram with c16 ram?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:23 PM PST

    Hey guys, I'm thinking of adding another 8gb of ram to my pc. At the moment I have some;

    Corsair CMK8GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz C15 XMP 2.0

But that exact product is unavailable to buy on Amazon now, and I can only find the one that has the same specs apart from being C16 instead. This is the full description of it -

    Corsair CMK8GX4M2C3000C16 Vengeance LPX 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB) DDR4 3000MHz

Would these two be compatible? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm still quite new to building pcs

Is this a good itx build?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:08 PM PST

Haven't build a pc in 7 years and my old rig isn't doing it for me. I'm moving out to college soon and I though an itx build would work pretty well. My current build has a gtx 970, i7 4790, and 16gb of ram. Looking for suggestions. Should I upgrade to a 2070 super and or a ryzen 7 3800? Want to keep it under $1500 and I'm gonna be using it for gaming and solidworks/CAD

I just got around to building my new PC, and everything went fine(i guess) until now, and i entered the BIOS, but my M.2 SSD isn't showing up. I have also a SATA SSD, and that is showing up alright. The SSD in question is a GIGABYTE 128 GB PCI Express 3.0 x4 M.2 2280, and the board is an MSI X470 Gaming Pro Max. Posted: 02 Feb 2020 01:24 PM PST

Will this work with my computer? I have a Killer B85 motherboard, gtx 970, i5-4430, 16 ram
Also, is this a good SSD? I see pictures of it being used in a laptop, does that mean its for a laptop? or is it for both or something?

Also, does this come with the cables to connect to pc? Because right now I have a HDD in my pc, and i'd like to use both the SSD and the HDD.

Obviously I could change the fan curve but are there any other ways to lower temps?
