Is it possible for a windows 10 build to be too old to update?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 08:51 PM PST

I just reinstalled a fresh windows installation, and every time I do that I tend to use an older version (I think this is 1507) so that I don't need to use my windows account as my local account. Right now I'm not able to update my computer (error: 0x80240fff) and I am trying to use the current version media creation tool to update but it's just stuck on 0% progress. Am I just buggered?

[Question] How long can I get away with using Windows 7?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 06:15 PM PST

When will Windows 7 become useless from a security standpoint like XP? Are there any major vulnerabilities already?

My PC is possessed - booting up and shutting down randomly

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 06:44 AM PST

I've got a tower PC that I built more than ten years ago and have been taking good care of over the years. It's currently running Windows 10 (fully patched) and I don't use it much - it spends most of its time shut down. It's a simple system: a P55 board, an i7, 12 GB RAM, a GeForce 1050 card, and an SSD.

In the past week I've noticed that, when sitting there shut down, it sometimes will spontaneously boot up, as if someone pressed the power button (but no one did). And then, a few minutes later, when I'm in the middle of poking around trying to figure out why it booted up - suddenly I get the "Shutting down" screen, and it shuts down cleanly. A few minutes later it starts booting up again, and then a few minutes later it shuts down again. Over and over. (Sometimes it just powers off immediately without shutting down, and sometimes this happens in the middle of booting.)

I replaced the power supply and the CMOS battery, but the problem still occurs. Malwarebytes finds no malware on the system. I'm running a tool that monitors fan speed and system temperature; I don't see any problems there.

I suspect this is a Windows problem because last night I ran "chkdsk /r" which checked the SSD after I rebooted - and the disk check ran for more than half an hour without the computer turning off.

"powercfg -lastwake" only says "Wake History Count - 0". I don't see anything in Event Viewer that seems to point to what's going on. The computer is set to sleep after an hour of inactivity.

I'm going to look closely at the motherboard for any bad capacitors, but I don't think that's going to turn up anything.

Anyone have any other suggestions for things I could try, before I try holy water?

Windows 10 boots to BIOS after fresh install?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 05:21 PM PST

Just a quick disclaimer: I've used Linux all my life ever since I got my first PC. I've never owned a computer which has had Windows on it for longer than 12 hours. It's very possible that I'm missing something super obvious here and if that's the case I apologise!

So basically I've installed Windows 10 on my laptop via a live usb as I need to use Windows for a program for school (WINE doesn't work unfortunately). I've wiped my SSD and created a live usb rather painlessly and the installation seems to go fine. HOWEVER, as soon as I reboot and remove the usb I'm sent straight into the BIOS. Running the troubleshooting tool included on the live usb yields no clues, and the terminal seems very bare bones (missing basic commands like "ls" lol).

I've disabled fast boot and secure boot and made sure I'm booting in UEFI mode, and reinstalled windows now 3 times but still no luck. Any help much appreciated, although I do find it amusing that Arch is probably easier to install than Windows these days

Is it possible to disable the fancy lock screen, and go directly to the log in screen?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 05:02 PM PST

Fancy lock screen being the one that has a wallpaper and shows today's date. I just want to type my password as soon as the computer turns on.

Redundant white bar at bottom of explorer?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 02:41 PM PST

I recently changed my app's theme from white to dark mode and have now noticed THIS white bar at the bottom of my explorer windows. If anyone has any idea on how to hide it I would be much appreciative. I do have Open-Shell(formerly Classic-Shell) installed for what that is worth if it may be coming from that.

Can't get out of airplane mode

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 01:47 PM PST

Just spend almost 5 Hours trying to get out of airplane mode and switching on the WiFi.

I tried everything I could find on the Internet, tinkering with the device manager and drivers, until I eventually reinstalled Windows (with the option to keep all the data, but delete all programs). It still doesn't work.

Before I do a complete reinstall (where everything is wiped), do you think this could solve the problem, or is it pretty much just the same just with my data also being deleted ?

Could it be a hardware problem, or do you have any tips?

Edit: the airplane mode butten is grey and can't be turnded on/off, if that helps

The Microsoft store opens seemingly by itself?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 10:58 AM PST

Maybe it's not actually "by itself", I suspect it's because of some hotkey? Since it always opens up while I'm gaming, making me drop fps by like 40. Any ideas?

    Custom Wallpapers Stretching

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 12:56 PM PST

When ever I choose to apply a custom wallpaper to my computer it stretches and is very low quality. I know there's a drop down bar that you can choose how the image should be fit to you screen but even when I use those all my wallpapers are still super low quality.

Am I just being stupid and there's an easy fix to this?

How do Data Execution Prevention (DEP) settings in latest Windows 10 play with each other?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 04:28 PM PST

As we all know Windows has the most beautiful interface. In 2020 you can still find Win95 era UI if you look for it.

But my question is specially about DEP. There are two options for it in Windows 10:

    1. Classic DEP toggle since early XP days
    2. Modern Windows Security Exploit Protection toggle for it since Windows 10 days

Is there an official documentation about their behavior when they are configured together?

    Windows Phone Activation?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 03:16 PM PST

I just bought a product key and then went through the phone activation process. I'm a bit confused though because I'm pretty sure they never asked for my windows activation key, only an installation ID that my computer gave me, and then I entered a confirmation ID that the phone system read to me.

How does this work? Am I missing something? I'm just curious.

    Thanks

    Windows Boot Manager issue

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 02:09 PM PST

    Hi Guys,

So I went a bit crazy and got myself a new 2TB SSD drive! I had a 500GB m.2 drive installed already. I simply plugged in the 2nd m.2 2TB SSD and began installing Windows. I didn't bother taking out my old 500GB SSD, just left that there as I was gonna just backup everything / drag drop what I needed from it.

After the install it asked me to choose Volume 6 or Volume 2 Windows 10? I was confused, I clicked Volume 2 and thought nothing of it. Installed all my stuff, new drivers, got carried away had a game. Then realised I had a required restart for windows updates. Did that, when it restarted it asked me to boot into Volume 7 or Volume 3.... I clicked 7. It booted into my 500GB SSD without issues. Restarted, this time it showed Volume 6 and Volume 2 again, clicked 2 and I was back on the fresh windows copy.

When I go to BIOS and check Boot Order, I see my 500GB is listed as #1 but in brackets it does say (Windows Boot Manager). When I go to update my boot priority, I can't change it from Boot Manager (500GB SSD) to my new SSD.

Have I done fucked something up? What is the best / least time consuming course of action to fix this? Should I remove the 500GB and reinstall windows on the 2TB?

    Any recommendations appreciated.

    Taskbar buttons disappeared

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 11:46 AM PST

Okay, so for some reason the search bar, the language button, the internet button, the volume, and other things have all disappeared from my taskbar. They're all enabled in settings but they just don't appear. The only things working fine are the shortcuts, windows button, and time. I've tried to restart "Windows Explorer" through task manager but that didn't work either.

Here's the image of my taskbar and its settings: https://imgur.com/a/Xio36Ct

Any help would be appreciated! :)

    Recovering deleted Windows Camera videos?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 04:37 AM PST

I was basically taking videos with my Windows Camera, then I clicked straight away to the PREVIEW at the bottom right of the Camera, INSTEAD of the Photos folder. I deleted some videos but now I want it back. I've tried some free recovering software but it's weird that I can find older deleted videos but not the new deleted ones.

I think the problem is that the videos never got a chance to be saved? Is there another hidden folder for recovering software where these are saved?

Technical question: Why could an icon still remain after the file has been deleted?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 04:27 AM PST

I recently had an issue where a file icon was still visible after deleting the file (Windows 10).

I restarted the computer (normal mode) but the icon remained. I tried deleting the icon, but an error message would pop up saying 'File not found' or something similar. I was eventually able to delete it using command prompt by typing: del "filepath"

I'm no expert in operating systems but am interested in having a basic understanding of this error. Was the icon stored somewhere in memory for it to still be displayed? And was the Delete function (from the keyboard) accessing a different part of memory, where there was no trace of said file?

Sorry if this sub is not meant for questions like this.

How can i change icon for .pdf file type in windows 8.1?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 12:09 AM PST

    Not for shortcut.

Why i'm asking this? Yesterday i installed foxit which changed icon for pdf even though i didn't select foxit for default pdf reader. Icon (at small, medium, large icons size view) now looks like preview of pdf file. Since every file has different contents, icon for every file is different and this is crap for me. I'd like to get back previous icon which is adobe's red triangle on white background. I was searching in regedit and find out that C:\Windows\Installer\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AC0F074E4100}\PDFFile_8.ico has very large such icon. I entered this into default in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\DefaultIcon but no effect.

    Please, help.

Windows changes my monitor refresh rate

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 09:39 PM PST

Hi everyone, for a while now I've been having a problem where every time I change resolutions on my monitors, my refresh rates for both monitors change from 60hz-59hz and 144hz-143hz. I change my resolutions because of the fact that I play native for some games and stretched for others. If anyone has any idea on how to solve this so I don't have to wait for a black screen every time I tab out please let me know down below.

    separate user accounts

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 12:07 AM PST

So, I am trying to create a second user account on my computer so I can have different settings and generally have a few things separated out, and just avoid cluttering up my personal and programming (currently only a hobbyist programmer, so not that good, probably why I am having this trouble) environments on my computer, that includes all my programs from one account to another, but every time I try to separate things out, all my programs remain accessible to the other account. I mainly have a bunch of games off steam on my computer, and what I want is to not be able to access them when I switch over to my other account. Essentially, each account should feel like it is on a different computer. Granted this isn't exactly necessary, I just like keeping things separate so that when I'm working on a big project, I'm not getting distracted, as well as a few different settings I check from one to another to optimize that account for its intended use. If it helps, I'm running Windows 10 pro, my OS runs off of an SSD, but the majority of my stuff is split between 2 disk drives, because when I was making my computer, SSDs that met the amount of space I wanted were out of my price range. If anyone can help me accomplish my task, I would appreciate it.
