Looking for a thin, sleek school laptop under $1000, for general work and a little CAD. Posted: 28 Feb 2020 06:28 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: <$1000, Preferably less. USA. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would prefer a 2 in 1 and good battery life, as well as in general being thin. Good battery life is the most important. How important is weight and thinness to you? Very. As thin and light as possible. Which OS do you require? Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14 inches. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Autodesk Inventor, part level stuff and small assemblies. No rendering, I have a desktop for heavy stuff. I am a Mechanical Engineering student. My current laptop with an Intel HD 620 is okay, but I would prefer a little more GPU power. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, touch screen if possible, thin and light. In general, I'm looking for something the portability of a MacBook with the power of a Thinkpad. I require 16GB of RAM, 4 cores, and good battery life. I would like a dedicated GPU, but only if its not an insane amount of money. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I saw this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JB56QJ7/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 However, it has 8GB of RAM. With 16GB, this would have been perfect. Is there something of similar specs and thinness with 16GB of RAM? I currently have a Lenovo Yoga 720 13.3" and love the form factor, but the 4GB of RAM and Dual Core are really showing their age. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - I kinda want big clonky Keys as in the HP Pavillion, a plus if backlit. Build quality is most important. Finger print reader is a plus. Optical drive is not necessary, i would rsther have better keyboard/touchpad. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - I really liked the feel of the 15" HP Pavillion, but it felt kinda cheap to the look, also specs didn't seem that good for the price. But kinda big and heavy with clonky Keys. [link] [comments] |

Is this a good time to buy a laptop? Posted: 28 Feb 2020 10:05 AM PST Well, today I held my laptop's funeral. It was very saddening although quite nostalgic being able to remember all the good and alone times we shared with each other. The numerous struggles she went through to get my work done or provide a good fps just so I could enjoy my time, even after she lost her energy retaining abilities and had to kept on life support, makes it much harder for me to write this as she always managed put a smile on my face. We had a beautiful relationship. Anyways, today I am here to honor her last words that she conveyed to me through Word, "I know it's hard to let go and forget about someone with whom you have spent so many years with, especially through puberty. But you have to, it's time you let go of me and find someone who could better handle yours needs as you are becoming a man now. Goodbye!" So is this a good time to look for a new laptop or should I wait? [link] [comments] |

<=£1000, UK
specs #1, battery #2 Actively hostile to 2-in-1 form
Not very important
Windows
Larger the better but not key consideration
Statistical programming: rStudio, Excel (advanced level use) Geographic analysis: QGIS. For both the above, mixture of doing database queries, but also need to save and manipulate relatively large datafiles from the harddrive. Photo editing: Occasional use of GIMP
NA Would also want to use for personal use, e.g able to handle torrenting and streaming films and music, but no real gaming requirements
Will usually run with a second screen, so a physical connection port wanted.

(never posted here before, hopefully some smart people can help me out) Posted: 29 Feb 2020 01:13 AM PST Looking to buy a laptop for year 11 and 12 (Australia) as mine recently died I need a new one ASAP. Max price $1500AU (about $1000US), ideally less. Preferably lightweight and 13/14inches, 15 maybe ok. Would need to be able to game on it as well, low/medium graphics are completely fine (needs to run War Thunder). I have looked at loads but can't see a decisively "best" one, and as you can tell I have very little knowledge about computers. Appreciate any help :) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Feb 2020 08:36 PM PST Just got the Lenovo ideapad 330s. So far, really liking it, as this is the first night I've used it. The only complaint I have right now is the battery...I unplugged it at 2211 and at 2235 it's down to 84%. Granted, I'm doing some downloading to set things up but geesh...that seems like fast drain. Is there a bigger battery I can purchase for this laptop? When I researched it and based on suggestions here, it seemed like I'd be able to take this on the go with few worries about battery life. Suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Aspire 5 i5 with IPS or i7 with TN Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:21 AM PST Hi, I'm currently looking for a new Laptop. I get some good deals through work and I am currently looking at two models of the Acer Aspire 5 with 15 inch displays. One with an i5-10210U and the other one with an i7-10510U. Both have a Geforce MX 250/2GB and 512GB NVME SSD and 8GB ram. The thing is that the i7 model is 700€ with a TN panel and the i5 is 630€ with an IPS panel. I won't do any gaming on it, just use it for browsing, office work with the occasional programming and Matlab use. Which one should I pick? [link] [comments] |
Old laptop died and looking for laptop suggestions Posted: 29 Feb 2020 12:14 AM PST So my old laptop of 6 years died and I'm kind of looking for a decent one with a budget of $480, willing to max out at $530. I'm a Computer Science student and I'm gonna run programs and other programs like Eclipse very often. I'm in the United States and am looking for a pretty general use laptop for Coding primarily and also has a Windows OS. Minimum 8 GB Ram please as I found out with other laptops 4GB RAM isn't cutting it anymore. (Not too important but something with minimal bloatware would also be nice). I was looking into getting this https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Convertible-Touchscreen-Processor-81SS000DUS/dp/B07TWHYTSQ/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 but I don't know if there are any better alternatives or better cheaper options. (I bought a laptop Acer Aspire E 15 for $350 but MAN was there problems with it not exiting sleep mode forcing me to force shut down everytime, the laptop refusing to update windows, AND the horrible screen. I ended up returning it so now I'm here). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Feb 2020 08:24 PM PST I am studying in college right now and I don't think I will buy a new one in the future, I need a one that I can use for future work. Or should I buy a decent one now and a Mac later, or buy a Mac or something else. Total budget for the laptop:1,00,000 and Country of purchase: India I would like good specifications(especially i7 and 9th gen) and good battery life. [link] [comments] |

Post Macbook Pro. Razer blade? Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:12 PM PST I've had several MBP 13 and 15. and while mac os is my favorite, I use windows for CAD and Linux for coding. I would love to have a Nvidia gpu in my next laptop. Budget is not too important. I would like a strong machine that can do CAD, deep learning jobs (at least proof-of-concept before learning in the cloud). I'm planning on being nomadic for a chunk of the year so weight and battery life are also important to me. I'm fine with 13" screen, max 15". My current choices are between Razer blade stealth 13, and Razer Blade 15. Blade 13 seems a good compromise with a decent geforce gtx, good weight, battery life and chargeable via usb-c (which opens me to future smaller GaN chargers). I don't think there is any laptop as small on the market with specs like this. Blade 15 with rtx 2080 has the killer specs which I lust over. But the weight + power brick makes me second guess. Battery life would be not great, and probably abysmal when running Linux! I'm also looking at system76 but they seem a little too bulky for anything with a decent graphics card. Is there an option I'm missing? MSI seems interesting, the laptops don't look as good as Razer blade, but I've heard the customer service is really good. Asus Zephyrus S is also of interest but doesn't seem to have anything over the Blade 15 besides interesting cooling (and weird format). [link] [comments] |

Looking for an affordable gaming laptop (US purchase, $400-$700, don't care about screen size) Posted: 28 Feb 2020 07:51 AM PST Hi, I'm looking for the most affordable US gaming laptop I can buy. Technically, I'm a US citizen living in South Korea until the end of the year, but South Korea laptops are ludicrously overpriced and obnoxious to deal with, so I'd rather just buy one from home and ship it over because they don't sell anything usable here under a thousand dollars. I've never been able to afford to be a PC gamer before, but I'm sick of that, so I want my next computer to be able to play all the games I could never afford to play before. I honestly like Dell much much more than HP (which are annoying and I hate them), but besides not wanting HP, I don't care which brand it is. Here are the minimum requirements the laptop has to be, according to the gaming website: CPU: Core i5-3570 3.4GHz (INTEL) or FX 6350 (AMD) GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX-660 (INTEL) or Radeon HD-7850 (AMD) Hard Disk: 55GB Ram: 8GB Direct X: DirectX 11 OS: Windows 7 (64-bit) So I'm looking to buy one of these online for as cheap as possible. Lastly DO NOT tell me to buy the parts or assemble it from eight different retailers, as I don't know how to build computers and it's very complicated. I want a full machine like this. Also, please don't include any mail-in rebates or complicated coupon processes like that, either. I just want a full ready-to-work laptop that meets these requirements. New or used from eBay; it doesn't matter to me. Just whatever is cheapest. Thank you very much for your help. Total budget and country of purchase: US, no more than $700, but $400-500 is my target. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money: I won't be taking it out of the house too often. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Larger is better, but no real preference Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: I want to play modern AAA video games, since I don't think any of the three current game consoles are any good at all. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I just want to play Mass Effect Andromeda, GTA V, and any newer games that come out on the minimum system requirements, which I listed above. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No, not really. Just energy saver; won't eat up my energy bill, but that's it. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I ideally don't want to spend more than $550 on it, but realize I may have to, to get what I want. I DO NOT want to "build the laptop myself," so please don't suggest that. Thank you. Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:53 PM PST Hey there! I have been searching out laptops, and I have some ideas in mind for what I want to purchase already, but I wanted to see some more suggestions/feedback for a 2-in-1 thin and light ultrabook with a good battery that I could use on the go, and then take home and dock at an EGPU for some mid-intensity gaming - so I am looking for thunderbolt 3 ports. I am really leaning towards a 2-in-1, but if there is a really great thin and light clamshell alternative that really can take the cake, then I am open to it! If it is a clamshell laptop, I would prefer a touchscreen, but I also want to keep the resolution at 1080p.
Here's what I've considered so far (in order of most considered to least considered):
Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Feb 2020 09:09 PM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Preferably between $1000 and $1500 (Though I may be able to add another $200-500 if the extra bucks is what it will take to ensure my new machine will be capable of suiting needs), US * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** While I have an Artisul D13 tablet I can continue to use if need be, since using it with Windows 10 hasn't been a "smooth-sailing" experience so far, I'm quite open to a 2 in 1 machine. Also, with how my current laptop has lasted me 9 years and ongoing, I want this next purchase to last, so battery life as well as having the best specifications are both important to me as well * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** While I want the option of being able to carry it around when needed, neither are that important to me overall since it will primarily be used at home. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows. I might consider Pro to be able to use VMs for software/web development practice purposes * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15" minimum * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Adobe Suite (Animate, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design, XD, Premiere), Affinity Photo/Designer, OpenToonz, Blender, Toon Boom, FL Studio, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Star Wars: The Old Republic (and possibly Maya and 3DS Max in the future as well). Since it wasn't mentioned, in addition to the above, I also may also want to practice programming/and software/web development using the likes of Visual Studio Code while learning Java, Spring, HTML.CSS, JavaScript, React * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I eventually want to return to gaming on some level, but at a minimum, I want to know what it's like to run Star Wars: The Old Republic on medium to high settings, as opposed to barely getting by on the absolute minimum of settings that I'm used to. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** If the laptop isn't a 2-in-1 and/or I'm not able to draw directly on the screen, then I need at least a couple USB-B slots and an HDMI port to work with my Artisul D13 (possibly a VGA Port too if I have to use my adapter like I have to with my current Windows 10 machine), and I suppose USB-C would be nice since the iPhone I upgraded to came with a USB-C cable. Also, some decent or good speakers would be nice to use with FL Studio. As far as storage space, I'm currently using 500 GB, so while another 500GB will do, 1TB minimum would be preferred. Besides the above, generally speaking, I'd say reliable build quality would be on the top of my list. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I don't want to come off someone who's "looking for a unicorn", lol. That said, having had to make do with a Sony Vaio for over 9 years with minimal specs by today's standards, I overall want to feel like I am using a reliable machine that not only is "worth every penny", but also will be able to handle "the heaviest of tasks", so to speak, especially should my skills develop enough that I'll be able to start using my laptop for more freelance/professional work in the future.
