Posted: 12 Feb 2020 01:08 PM PST Hey i am going to start using Linux as a daily system. I've been a long time user of Windows and finally decided to change it. I am not very familiar with Linux tho. I want a distro that would be good for basic usage and software development and in my case Stability of system is also extremely important. I've heard a lots of good comments about Pop is for beginners, and I've heard good comments about Manjaro too although I don't know if Arch based system is good for a daily driver for beginner. What do you think? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

How do I Install Ryzen 3 3200G driver for Ubuntu 19.10 Posted: 12 Feb 2020 12:47 AM PST Did a fresh Installation of Ubuntu 19.10. I have never used Linux in this machine so I don't know If I should be manually Installing driver or will It automatically update? I also cannot see any drivers listed in the "additional drivers" tab in "Software & Updates" app. My only reason to switch to Ubuntu from Windows was I was running out of space in my SSD. Windows literally took 96G in it's fresh Installation. smh. Any suggestions would be highly appreciable. Thankyou. [link] [comments] |
Audio quality of Ubuntu and Manjaro Posted: 11 Feb 2020 11:09 PM PST I installed Manjaro few weeks ago. Everything went well. Everything was stable until I checked the audio output on my earphones. There was a static coming out of earbuds. I thought it might be an earphone issue but when checked it on windows and my phone, it worked perfectly well. Frequency response was okay in Windows and my phone. Then I installed Ubuntu, and in that I am using the regolith desktop. There is still a static coming out of it. I suspect it is a driver issue of some sort. How do I get rid of it? [link] [comments] |
Which terminal to use and why? Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:02 AM PST I am currently using Konsole, because it was shipped with KDE neon, however I see so many different terminals like zsh, kitty, tmux etc. What are the differences between all these? Is it just the designs or themes? [link] [comments] |

Ubuntu contradicts it self on my nvidia driver Posted: 12 Feb 2020 01:02 PM PST 18 LTS Ubuntu I have an HP laptop with MX250 nvidia card. No matter what, PC doesn't recognize it. I switched to using the card from the intel one, and my laptop once again makes sounds with the fan so obviously it is working. But CIV6 settings tells me I have an "unknown device". Under "Additional devices" I have a check mark under "using driver 440" but above it says "device unknown, using alternative driver". I tried adding the graphic drivers PPA and running ubuntu-drivers autoinstall. I disabled secure install. I just don't know what's the problem. So I don't understand why my nvidia is clearly working, but not recognized by OS? EDIT: I just recalled that my ubuntu-drivers devices output does not include the card model: modalias : pci:v000010DEd00001D13sv0000103Csd000085F0bc03sc02i00 vendor : NVIDIA Corporation driver : nvidia-driver-440 - third-party free recommended driver : nvidia-driver-435 - distro non-free driver : xserver-xorg-video-nouveau - distro free builtin 3 drivers, but no model. Trying to dual boot windows 10 and kubuntu Posted: 12 Feb 2020 12:51 PM PST I just got a new SSD on which I installed Windows 10 and let half of the drive space unallocated/unpartitioned for a kubuntu install. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the dual boot working. I installed both OSs (Windows first), and checked, I can get into Windows, but not into Linux. I do not have the option to boot to GRUB. When installing Linux I made 2 partition : - A 20G swap partition - A root partition with the rest of the available storgae (ext4) I checked on a kubuntu "LiveCD" the root partition, and the filesystem looks okay to me. There is even a "grub" folder on it. But I am not able to load GRUB. I tried running I can only see the Windows Boot Manager from my BIOS, and when I run it, it boots me straight into Windows. Here is my ``` Gestionnaire de démarrage Windows // Windows boot manageridentificateur {bootmgr} // identifier device partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume2 path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi description Windows Boot Manager locale fr-FR inherit {globalsettings} default {current} resumeobject {d93b6703-4dc0-11ea-bd96-8c426c976c0f} displayorder {current} toolsdisplayorder {memdiag} timeout 30 Chargeur de démarrage Windows // Windows boot loaderidentificateur {current} // identifier device partition=C: path \Windows\system32\winload.efi description Windows 10 locale fr-FR inherit {bootloadersettings} recoverysequence {d93b6705-4dc0-11ea-bd96-8c426c976c0f} volumebandid 2 displaymessageoverride Recovery recoveryenabled Yes isolatedcontext Yes allowedinmemorysettings 0x15000075 osdevice partition=C: systemroot \Windows resumeobject {d93b6703-4dc0-11ea-bd96-8c426c976c0f} nx OptIn bootmenupolicy Standard ``` Is there anything that I did wrong ? I can re-install both Windows and linux if needed; I have nothing installed on either systems... [link] [comments] |

How to bind keys to open programs/paste stuff? Posted: 12 Feb 2020 08:21 AM PST I'll be getting a 128-key macro pad soon and was wondering how I can program it to do things like open certain programs/games (such as Chrome or GTA V), as well as paste commonly used things like my email address or website URLs. I'm running Manjaro on my PC, and the macro pad is a Cherry RC128BM. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Evolution can't authenticate with Nextlcloud CalDAV Posted: 12 Feb 2020 11:58 AM PST So I'am using Thunderbird as primary mail client but wanted to try out Evolution as some people recommend it over Thunderbird. Posted: 12 Feb 2020 04:13 AM PST Trying to edit some config files for a new build. The issue is that I've got a mix of some which have been updated and some which have not. I basically was doing sed -i s/classify/classify\//g' *.cfg http://172.17.0.2:12000/api/v0/classify For some of the files that already end with classify/ this will superfluously append and additional / to the URL if it's already present. What's a more intelligent approach to this task? [link] [comments] |
Bit more than Noob question - trying to get xdesktop to run command on boot Posted: 12 Feb 2020 11:25 AM PST Hi all Im trying to hack a thinclient OS we have at work to allow it to get background images from a web server so we can dynamically change everyones background easily (Quote of the day, christmas themes etc) I have a simple script which does a wget from a internal web server, and runs the command to load that image into the desktop and refresh hptc-zero-desktop --root --image=/tmp/background When i run my script from terminal, the background updates fine Im trying to now figure out how to get it to run automatically on boot I put it in the dhcp hooks folder, and I can see the script running in the system logs after a IP is allocated XOpenDisplay returned NULL! My guess is the user it is running as on boot doesn't ahve access to the xdesktop display? How can I get my script to run as user? to load the background in properly? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Occasional audio/video stutter with amd RX580 Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:58 AM PST Sooo, ever since I installed my RX580 I noticed occasional audio/video stutter while playing music or movies (played locally or streamed). The stutter doesn't occur when I'm playing games. I have browsed many threads about this subject but none seems to fit my problem. What weirds me out is that the audio has the exact same behaviour whether I use the in-build audio card, or my gpu trough HDMI. I have seen propositions to tinker with pulseaudio but 1) that wouldn't explain the video stutter 2) it worked before I used the RX so it couldn't be that. Regardless, I tried the tsched = 0 in the pulseaudio conf file and the problem persisted. Any help or suggestions would be welcome as I start to feel hopeless. I'm using the free AMDGPU drivers. How to change unix path to /bin/tar Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:23 AM PST I dont understand what to do! please help. Below is what I need to do/ "The problem below manifests when the UNIX path to the 'tar' command points to the wrong 'tar' executable. It looks like tool needs the tar located on our network here: /bin/tar For some reason, my path was getting changed to find this command in /usr/local/bin . Once I fixed this, then the problem in tool disappeared." [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:12 AM PST So I was messing with the Java installed on my Linux Mint, and then I followed this to remove all Java related things. I probably should not have done that as it supposedly removes all Oracle and Sun related things (?). Command from link: So anyways, after I ran that, I've been having issues with my PATH variable, using To fix this, I added the value stored in PATH manually to the end of my ~/.bashrc file. When I added it at the start or somewhere in the middle, it would not work. I really don't know why, I guess it gets overwritten somewhere in the middle. Is there a right way to reset the PATH variable, or to find out why the default PATH values are not added at the start? I am guessing this is related to one of the removed packages (?). Posted: 12 Feb 2020 12:06 AM PST Ryzen 2400G Recently moved to Gigabyte X570 mobo Seperate drive dual booting Pop_OS 19.10 and Win 10 Both on SSD's, Pop on M.2 SATA and Win on a 2.5' SATA So I changed motherboard with issues, but eventually success (still have DisplayPort issues but it's probably my shitty cable) I was able to boot and was using both Pop and Win without any issues, until I spend just a little too much time watching videos in Windows and when I switch back to Pop, it doesn't work. I literally only fixed windows programs and watched youtube, that's all. Now my Pop drive won't even mount in demo mode from a USB. I cannot access any of the data on the drive. I'll give more details but I'm struggling not to explode in anger, and I'm usually very calm. Probably because this is the second time the entire OS has become unusable. The first time I wiped the drive because I didn't know about windows fast boot bullshit. 12/2 It boots to a menu where i can select Ubuntu 19.10 or recovery mode, but both just bring me to a terminal screen "BusyBox v1.30.1" built in shell (ash), and whatever "initramfs" is. It has a few errors, being unable to write to the IOMMU perf counter and unable to resume it for a device and doesn't add it because of the error. When I boot from USB into demo mode of Pop_OS, I can scan the drive for errors and it says it needs to be repaired, but when I try, it gives me another error. Ironic. It doesn't show up at all if I try to use an ext4 reader in Windows. BIOS on my Gigabyte motherboard is all defaults. [link] [comments] |
