Which Laptop should I get for uni? Posted: 08 Feb 2020 03:38 PM PST I need a new laptop for uni, not sure which one I should get. Key things for me is screen, battery life and portability. the aesthetics of the laptop is pretty important as well [link] [comments] |

Ultraportable photo editing laptop Posted: 09 Feb 2020 04:08 AM PST Looking for a travel laptop, the main purpose would be photo editing. Total budget and country of purchase: 2000€, but possible to pay more if the laptop is otherwise absolutely perfect. EU. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Would prefer NOT to have "2 in 1". Battery life is important, and I want the best specs that are possible to get considering the thin&light form factor. How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, as I'd mostly use it while traveling. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10, but compatibility with Linux is a plus. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14", any bigger than that is going to be too cumbersome but too small isn't good either for photo editing. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing with Lightroom. Occasional software development in Linux (either a virtual machine or booting from an external SSD). If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I play occasionally, but it's not that important to me. Certain functions in Lightroom can benefit from a good GPU, though. Perhaps the upcoming Wasteland 3 would be something I'm interested in, but it's not a high priority for this laptop as I have another PC I can play on. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Display with good color reproduction and high resolution (full HD is not enough) is the most important thing. No need for touch screen. Would strongly prefer to have 32GB of memory for future-proofing as 16GB is only the bare minimum. Good keyboard for coding. A well-functioning touchpad is a plus. Good build quality should be a given for this price. Full sized HDMI connector and an integrated SD card reader are a plus as that means less dongles. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My old laptop is an Asus Zenbook UX430UA. I'm otherwise quite happy with it but it has only 8 GB of memory which is just not enough. Also the display is only FHD, want to upgrade to higher res. I'd probably get the latest gen Lenovo X1 Carbon if only it had 32 GB of memory instead of 16... that's almost my dream laptop. Is there any ultrabook with 32GB of memory? They all seem to still max out at 16 GB... What are my next best options that have 32 GB but still remain relatively thin & light and have a good display? [link] [comments] |
Wanted: Good college laptop for around $900-$1400 Posted: 09 Feb 2020 12:18 AM PST Total budget and country of purchase: 1400USD, Sweden. (8000sek-14000sek) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?Good battery life and i like a 2 in 1 (not necessary though). How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. Which OS do you require?Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size?Max 14" but perfect sice is around 13". Dont want a big and clunky laptop in my backpack, or a laptop that takes up alot of space in classes. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?Maybe light gaming like hearthstone. But not really. Mostly for college and multitasking different Office365 and other apps. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices:Good keyboard is a prefrence. Good build quality.(Can live with dongles, also a touch-screen woul be nice with a pen but not necessary) Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. appreciate all your suggestions I dont want a iPad or microsoft surface with a separate keyboard. I want a 2 in 1 at most.I've been looking at the Lenovo C940 with i7 and 512GB storage and 16GB ram. I got one for a really good price. But im down for more suggestions. This computer will be with me for atlest 3-5 years. Since i start college soon, and i will be studying Economics or Business. I already own office 365 package so wont be needed in the laptop when i buy it. So future proof is needed. Thank you for taking your time to read this, all help is needed! [link] [comments] |

A little bit of everything (hopefully) - $2000, USA Posted: 09 Feb 2020 03:30 AM PST Thunderbolt 3 would be a nice touch, along with a 3.5mm jack, some USB-A ports, HDMI out, and SD card reader. Ethernet port is kinda stretching it but if possible, yes, if not, that's ok. I don't know if I've made a mistake by buying the ASUS Zenbook Pro 15 UX580GE. I like its screenpad and all but after looking around after I feel like I can trade in the screenpad for a lot more bang for my buck. I've been looking at the XPS 15 7590 and the Gigabyte Aero 15 Classic-SA-U74ADP. Any other recommendations/suggestions? Thanks, I've been up late contemplating my investment. [link] [comments] |
Wanted: a good laptop ~ 2k USD budget Posted: 08 Feb 2020 10:26 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: 2000USD, Hong Kong Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Battery life is secondary as I probably will be using it mostly at home, plugged in. Specs please. How important is weight and thinness to you? not that important. Which OS do you require? Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? At least 15" but bigger doesn't hurt Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Leisure games mostly. The most specs intense game I have on steam is Frostpunk. Not a big fan of FPS Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices: good keyboard is good. Type C is good. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. appreciate all your suggestions [link] [comments] |

Laptop for all around/mixed usage (student + gaming) Posted: 08 Feb 2020 12:38 PM PST Hey, I am in for a new laptop (that does not look like a spaceship about to take off). Being a student I often go to lectures and library, so battery life is among the most important criteria. Though I do not really have as much time as back in school anymore, I have to admit I still have a weakness for gaming. Currently, I am looking at the following devices:
So basically a laptop with the following 3 criteria:
that lasts me at least 5 years. Budget: depends on the criteria fulfilled, but I'd like to stay at around 2000€ (though I also looked at a Macbook Pro 16", so...) Any suggestions? Or is something more suitable about to be released? (e.g. I hear the Blade will be updated in Q1 this year - are better thermals and battery included?) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Feb 2020 12:41 AM PST I'm not 100% set on this, but if I were to purchase a MacBook, it'd probably be a while from now (maybe towards the end of the year?). If I do end up getting one, which model would be best for me if I were to use it mainly for xcode and possibly light stuff like email, using the internet, etc. I just got a 15" Surface Book 2, so the Macbook wouldn't be my main device. I have xcode on my Surface Book through virtual box, but I don't think it's a good long term solution. I know a MacBook Pro would probably be too much for my needs. At my school, we are using 2017 macbook airs in my apple app development class, and I'm wondering if I should stick with purchasing this model or if I should get an older one, or maybe even the 12" Macbook. The max I'm willing to spend would have probably be $600. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a gaming laptop in the $800 range, Wanting to do 120Hz display if that's possible Posted: 09 Feb 2020 12:28 AM PST
$800-U.S.
Best specifications for money, This will be a dedicated Gaming PC
Not at all
Windows
15"+
Overwatch, OW2 in the fall(hopefully), Escape From Tarkov, Rainbow six Siege.
I was hoping to do something with a 120hz display, However i don't know if anything in this price range will be able to hit 120fps on the games that i mentioned.
A good keyboard would be nice but its not a dealbreaker if its not the best. Thanks for taking the time to read, and maybe give a suggestion, I really appreciate it! [link] [comments] |

Like I said earlier laptop would be used only for playing cs go and watching some tv shows. So 144hz is must have. Other than that... i don't know. Done some research and find out positions like: Acer Helios 300 Asus rog's Msi gs65/75 stealth Alienware area 51 Alienware 15/17 Razer 15/17 I like a lot Alienware designes, same with Razer and I don't mind spending $ for that. Just don't know which cpu/gpu/cooling is the best for me and what is an overkill only for cs go on high fps. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
650 united states - super portable but functional Posted: 08 Feb 2020 11:36 PM PST
I need a machine, tablet or laptop that is very light even when combined with it's power cord. For work I mostly need access to web browsers. I use google drive and some other web browser based software and that is about it. If I happen to be able to also play some games on it, neat. I am debating an older surface pro tablet but I don't want to spend my whole budget if I don't have to. I am used to searching for gaming laptops and don't really know how cheap I can go while still being happy with the machine. It does need to run quickly and smoothly. Storage space is less important as 2 of my jobs mostly use google drive for document storage. This will be my on the go work machine. [link] [comments] |
Help me choose a XPS 15 model: Cheaper OLED or more expensive Touch model Posted: 08 Feb 2020 11:03 PM PST I've decided to get a XPS 15. I have a choice of getting a 1) TOUCH/i7/16gb/1tb (1750$) or 2) OLED/i7/16gb/512gb ($1500). I don't really need a touch display but I want a 4K display. I'll be using the laptop for work, watching Netflix and occasional gaming. Battery life isn't a huge concern for me. I was leaning towards choice 2) because of the cheaper price and I don't really need a terabyte of space. After reading reviews and reddit posts however, I found that some OLED screen users have complained of banding and flickering issues. I've also learned that OLED screens on laptop screen are relatively new and are prone to longevity issues (eg. burn-in). So, now I'm thinking I'll get choice 1). Could you share some experiences you guys had with either one of the two screens? Or advise me which laptop would be a better choice? Have there been any software updates for issues with OLED screens? Is there a decent chance of me getting a dud OLED screen? Thanks in advance for your input guys. EDIT: Mixed up the screen spec in the choice [link] [comments] |

Portable laptop to replace my current Chromebook/Laptop combo. Posted: 08 Feb 2020 07:20 PM PST Hey! At the moment, I have an older 15.6" laptop with an i7-6700HQ and GTX 1060 and a Samsung Chromebook Pro. The laptop has been through a lot, and can't stay on without wall power. It's an adequate desktop but it does get choppy just because I manage memory irresponsibly. (Browser tabs, not restarting, etc.) The Chromebook is passable, but any time I try to do something beyond web browsing, Google Docs, or a select few Android apps... things get weird or break. This particular chromebook is pretty neglected in terms of Linux support, and can only "sideload" Linux in a VM rather than running it as the primary OS. My goal is to get one machine to replace both of these. I love the form factor, portability, and battery life of the Chromebook but I want a proper Windows desktop experience when I'm at home. Basically, I want to have a USB-C/Thunderbolt hub at home that I can plug into my laptop to use it as a desktop and when I'm leaving I can just toss the laptop into my bag and head out the door. I am open to my "dock" being an eGPU enclosure, and I do like that that would leave me the option of upgrading my graphics card (and selling the old one) in the future. But, I think for this to be a satisfactory experience, and for video editing to not be miserable, I might need to leverage a powerful CPU. I'm also open to trying cloud computing when I need to utilize more CPU resources, but I'm concerned about how video editing would work on that platform--interacting with storage and fine-tuning cuts and edits tied to sound. Total budget and country of purchase: There's no budget. Cheaper is better in principle, but I'm trying to find something that satisfies everything I'm looking for. I'm currently in South Korea, in a few weeks I'll visit America, and shortly after that I'll return to Taiwan, where I live. (Taiwan has retail access to Huawei, Xiaomi, and other Chinese brands.) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is most important out of these. I like my Chromebook Pro's 2-in-1 nature, but I don't utilize it a lot. I do like the touchscreen and how well the pen works. "Best specifications" for the money would be appreciated, but realistically unless it makes video editing better it isn't too important. How important is weight and thinness to you? Really important. Not only do I travel and go to school, but I do tutoring and language exchange and sometimes randomly need my laptop for a creative or fun endeavor. On top of that, I typically only bring a carry-on bag when I travel so saving weight is really appreciated there. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Strong preference for Windows, I might need to start using Linux for some projects. Supporting a Linux VM would be nice, but this is probably something I could use a cloud computing VM for. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A I'm not exactly sure. I think I've decided 15.6" is too big for me. I like the Chromebook Pro, but it does feel a little small sometimes. According to specs, it's a 12.3" screen but the bezels are pretty large for the size and I think they make the screen feel smaller. Probably, between 12" and 14" is the sweet spot for me. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I use Adobe Premiere Pro at the moment, because that's what my school uses. I'm planning to try DaVinci Rseolve and see how I feel about it. Occasionally I use Photoshop and Illustrator, too. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I use a 4K TV as my monitor. For me, it's great for productivity because I can have four "1080p" windows, or 2 on one side and one tall window on the other side, or whatever else. With my current apartment and desktop setup, my laptop is usually closed and out-of-sight. For Leauge of Legends and other "eSports" games, my 1060 laptop usually does a fine job. But any time I try to play a more modern title, the experience is bad, sometimes even if I switch to 1080p. I enjoy using emulators and oversampling older games (~Playstation to Wii U), it's not too demanding but does require some lifting from the CPU. My TV only goes up to 60hz, so for better or worse that's where I'm capped. Having a video card that can consistently hit 90-120FPS would be nice, though, for locking the framerate and/or using Vsync. But, as I've said above, I don't mind using an eGPU to get the visuals I'd like. Having a CPU that can sustain 90-120fps, I guess, is what I would like. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is super important to me, I want to feel comfortable putting the laptop into my backpack in the same compartment as everything else. Open to investing in a vinyl wrap or sleeve. Touch screen is also quite important, I would consider options without but have a strong preference for it to be there. The keyboard isn't critically important, but a better keyboard is preferred--ideally a conventional QWERTY layout with as few changes as possible. Shortcut buttons for brightness and volume are appreciated. A quality touchpad would be appreciated. My camera uses standard-size SD cards. I could swap to smaller cards with an adapter but that would be less-than-ideal. (Extra expense, more pieces to break/forget/lose.) A SD card reader would be nice, but that can be done externally and USB transfer is usually an option. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a decent gaming laptop Posted: 08 Feb 2020 07:15 PM PST United States and (hopefully) $1000 and under. Prioritizing performance heavily over graphics as I'm new to pc gaming and a lot of games I'm interested in seem to be notorious for needing some extra power to run smoothly like Arma for example. Battery life isn't a factor as I have no reason to travel or take it out of the house. I know the budget is probably low for a powerful laptop so I'm open to suggestions from higher price ranges. Just hoping to keep the price down as I dont care how good the game looks as long as it runs well. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
