I dont want to do it manually because it is a lot. Is there an easy and safe way to do this with windows? It can be, that there are a few files which have the same file name but are different in size and length - video files. Not sure though. Windows 10 Boot Loader, Explanation Posted: 27 Feb 2020 05:21 AM PST Can anyone explain the contents of the windows 10 boot loader, I believe it normally get's installed in the system partition that the installer automatically creates whereas the OS is installed on the boot partition. Here is why I ask. I have a 240gig SSD and a 120gig SSD. The 240 gig has (had at this point lol) the following partitions: 451 MB was the recovery 95.95 MB Not sure what this is for. 16.00MB Might be the system? 240gb SSD So as you can see I royally f*d these paritions up, Windows still boots though! The labels are missing because I think I moved or deleted or overwrote, I really don't know. I wanted to move Windows 10 and the other 3 paritions it creates to a new 120gig SSD. I used EASUS parition master, and all partitions copied successfully, except the one with Windows installed. It would reboot, and just give me a black screen so I gave up on trying to clone windows to the 120gig. I installed windows 10 clean on the 120gig, but left my old OS in tact (I want both running for a while as I set up the new OS to make sure I have everything the same as I had it before). Also in case I end up needing something from Application Data I can copy it over. I know the right way is a clean install but I need to keep that old OS running while I set up the new one, then I can blow it away and dedicate the whole 240gig to my games. So now that I had windows 10 on both drives, I noticed it just used the recovery and system partitions of the 240gig as opposed to creating new ones. Makes sense. So I shrunk the Windows 10 partition on the 120gig and tried to copy over recovery, system and the other partition to the 120gig drive. I had issues with sizing, because if I left 16.00mb of space to copy the partition it wasn't enough so I had to make them a little bigger and I kept getting extra space before and after no matter what I did, but whatever its minuscule: ​ https://preview.redd.it/adi2yeo7tgj41.png?width=791&format=png&auto=webp&s=ac00dea486e6ab24afd7412dd34e67c2e7cb749b So I changed the first boot disk to the 120gig in BIOS and it worked, I was able to boot, and had both OS's selectable, however I could not boot into the new windows install anymore would just restart over and over. UGH so no big deal I can try to fix that new install of windows, so now I'm thinking to myself, looks like I have two copies of my bootloader, one on each drive, so both should still work. SO I changed the first boot disk back to my 240gig, and it will not boot from that one anymore. As you can see by the first screenshot, I fucked it up. I think I mixed up the drives and maybe overwrote something but as you can see the labels are even gone in my first screenshot (and thats the old windows 10 install that had been working fine up until I tried to clone it). At one point I booted and when I ran MSCONFIG there was no boot.ini file so I couldn't change which OS was default etc but then it just stopped booting from the 240gig. OK sorry for the long preamble. Anywho I know I could probably just use my windows 10 bootable flash drive to fix the bootloader doing the BCD scan etc.....but I kinda want to understand this at a deeper level and maybe fix it manually. I'm very afraid to copy from the 120gig to the 240gig because I feel like maybe some files are on the boot partition (where windows 10 lives) as well, I was even reading that you don't even really need a separate system partition and that your bootloader can exist on the boot partition (what I learned is the boot partition is the one that has windows and the system partition is the small one with just the bootloader). I tried browsing the system partition using EASUS to see what was inside it, I could not find a BOOT.ini file, not even sure where that is supposed to live. I wish I knew what files were involved in the bootloader so I could look at them and see if I could fix it manually. I REALLY really don't want to lose the ability to boot my PC because I don't have a ton of time to work on this. I'm still not even sure what I am booting from is the bootloader is 100% on the new 120gig, I know I set it to the first boot disk in bios, but with all the copying of partitions I did I'm worried I somehow f'd it up the point where its reading some files from one disk and some files from another. If I disconnect my 120gig completely my PC just doesn't boot. So In summary I just want to be able to, from within windows, see where I am booting from, and be able to edit those files to manually fix my problem, and maybe understand the 16.00mb and the 99ishmb parition that windows creates (I know what recovery is for). submitted by /u/Marsui_ [link] [comments]

How can I charge my phone with my laptop instead of transferring data? Posted: 27 Feb 2020 08:19 PM PST I just got a DELL Inspiron 15 3000 with Windows 10, and I've been trying to charge my phone through the USB ports only to see very long charge times. I previously had a Chromebook that had no problem charging my phone to 100% in 2-3 hours, but on my new laptop I'm getting charge times of over 7 hours with the same cable. Remove computer start over network (start pxe over ipv4/ipv6) Posted: 27 Feb 2020 09:56 AM PST I've sent my computer to warranty and it came back like this : Whenever the computer starts, it will try to start through network, first ipv4, than ipv6, only after these it starts normally through the Hdd. My boot order is as follows: Hdd Usb Cd/dvd Ipv4 Ipv6 I even tried disabling ipv4/ipv6, but disabling it prevents the computer to boot at all, it will just say 'no boot device found'. My laptop updated and now my WiFi driver doesn’t work! Posted: 27 Feb 2020 10:43 AM PST So the other day I opened up my laptop to discover that it had updated (I always block my windows updates ASAP but this one must of slipped through the net) and I noticed I now had a watermark on my screen saying to "activate windows", upon following the instructions to reactivate (this is a legitimate windows laptop legally purchased 5+ years ago) it was struggling to connect to the internet, I did a bit of research and tried downloading an update for my driver on a different computer and installing but it still said my driver was top notch, i tried disabling it and re enabling it and still no magic, I don't even get a WiFi button on my little tray pad thing! No more screen saver support in Windows 10 1909? Bug or not? Posted: 27 Feb 2020 12:04 PM PST First time posting here, so it may be a little bit of a mess. So I have this bad habit of not updating windows immediately. Mainly for the feature updates. Delaying the feature updates for a month or 2 isn't super bad, but I usually don't install feature updates until windows update forces me to because the current feature update I'm running will lose quality updates soon. Anyways, this is besides the point. What you need to know is up until last week, I was running 1809, but it looks that will stop getting quality updates shortly, so windows update made me install 1909. Well, after the update, I noticed that I never got my lovely ribbons screen saver. Now this has happened before, so I made a reg file to enable it. Also, starting in version 1803, the personalization menu in the legacy control panned was removed, and all personalization settings had to be done via settings. One thing that wasn't brought through was screen savers, but up until now, if you set a screen saver before 1803, it would continue to work, and you can actually add one via the registry. However, now, even after restarting running the reg file several times, I still have no screen saver. Did Microsoft officially kill screen saver support, or is this just a bug I'm experiencing? Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks in advance. UPDATE: I have it back. So someone told me you can still access the old setting via the start menu, so I did, and set the screen saver to what I want, and now it works! Posted: 27 Feb 2020 05:47 PM PST So I was recording a class (gotomeeting via browser) today via game bar (windows + G) and towards the end I had to take a call so I walked out. I am 100% sure that it was recording when I left. When I came back, the meeting had ended and the laptop had gone to sleep mode, theres nothing recording and it wasnt saved in the usual place either. This is pretty important for me so could anyone please help? Can't get personal task to run even when I try to run it from task scheduler. It wasn't running on it's own, so I tried to run it manually through the task scheduler. The batch file itself only takes a second to run, yet the task status stays stuck on "running" until it times out and never does anything. I've followed all these troubleshooting steps to no avail. Windows media player keeps freezing(WIN8.1) Posted: 27 Feb 2020 05:28 AM PST WMP(WIN8.1) keeps freezing when i try to play videos on it, just videos, playing MP3/Music seems to work just fine.. Restarting my computer will get it working for a bit but eventually when i try to play an MP4/video it wont open and can cause freezing on whatever part of the computer its on, like if its a video i keep on my Desktop out in the open, it'll freeze just the desktop page but ill be able to interact with other open programs just fine. When i force close WMD, I can see in task manager that its still running in the background. When i try to close it in the background it'll say SERVER EXECUTION FAILED, sometimes it shuts it down, sometimes it doesn't. After the problem starts happening im unable to just restart my computer, it will say its trying to restart but it never will(i've left it on to restart all night and it didn't work) and i always have to manually turn it off and back on. Ive tried every fix i can find on the internet, ive turned WMD on and off in programs, ive made WMD remake its files, ive tried troubleshooting WMP libary with admin rights and it says its corrupted no matter how many times i tell it to fix it. I have never downloaded any programs that would interact with/change WMP in any way and i have never changed the settings in it. All my drivers are up to date and WMP is its most current version. I have VLC and it never has any problems working, i dont have problems with videos on the internet. At this point i really don't know what to do. Randomly edit the contents of a file? Posted: 27 Feb 2020 07:16 AM PST I have Clue on my media server. The Blu-ray has three cuts with three different suspects revealed as the killer, and menu options to play any given one, as well as a menu option to play with a randomly selected ending. The media server allows for different cuts of the same film, but not selecting a random one. So I have MKV files for each cut. The media server also supports strm files, essentially as text file with the address of a video file. So I was thinking I could have a strm file linking to one of the cuts, and then something automated to randomly edit the contents of the strm file to link to different cuts. Driver Signing Enforcement of specific driver Posted: 27 Feb 2020 08:44 AM PST Hi all, I am having issues with a specific driver of which there is no valid signature for Windows 10 (Worked on Windows 7). I already told the company supplying the driver what the issue is, but they don't give a shit. Even though fixing it shouldn't take them much time. When driver signing enforcement is disabled everything works just fine, but I don't want to disable it completely. That's why I would like to know if anyone knows, if it is possible to disable the driver signing check only for a single specific driver. Thanks in advance!
