    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Australia but if its available on somewhere like amazon US that works too

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Battery needs to last around 8hrs+, and want good mcvalue for specs

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Weight needs to fit into backpack, thinness is ideal

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Dont mind

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Don't intend to

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I want a keyboard that is nice to the touch and will last for multiple years, device needs to have good cooling too as although i dont plan on using it to game i would still like that peace of mind.

I dont really like the thinkpad lineup, i dont know why but its just something with the design that puts me off tbh. I like the asus zenbook and MSI prestige 15's but i've heard that they probably wont last that long

Need help in finding a good low/medium spec gaming laptop?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 03:39 AM PST

    Hi all,

I am looking into getting a gaming laptop, I want one that is good value for what you get so I don't mind spending a bit more than my budget as long as It is worth it.

I don't have a specific screen size, ideally not a small one though as it will be for gaming purposes so the larger the better.

Ideally at least 8gb of ram or above if possible. I would also like to be able to do some basic video editing on it, but nothing too serious and some screen video capturing.

I would ideally like to spend between £500 - £1500, this figure is pounds, but that's about $649.10 - $1947.30.

Obviosuly the costs may be different between here and the states for example but it will still give me a good idea of the specs I need.

Apart from that, I don't have any other specifics due to my lack of knowledge.

    Thanks all.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    United Kingdom, £500 to £1500

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

I don't really know what this means, batterly life isn't a huge concern as I would be using it at home and can plug it in, so best specs for the money is key.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Almost irrelevant for my use

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows or Chrome.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

The larger the better due to intended use

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Not for CAD use. I will however use it for gaming, video recording and editing. I am not sure of the specific programmes as I need to look into it more.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Generally older ish games like Fallout 3, New Vegas, Fallout 4, Skyrim, but would like the specs to be over these games minimum requirements and to give me flexibility if I want to play more modern game.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

No specific requirements, reliable build quality is desirable.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

General purpose laptop - budget of $800 to $1200 USD.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 02:55 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Australia, AUD $1,200 to 1700, (about $800 to $1,200 in USD)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Current screen size is 15.6 inches, would like something around the same, certainly not too much smaller

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly photo editing and general browsing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm an occasional gamer. Once a month I might play something, if that.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The fan on the laptop I have now is so loud, has been since I first got it. So something that isn't loud and that doesn't heat up fast would be good. Thanks for reading!

Light/Thin 15(.6)" Mobile Workstation for Architecture professional WITH NUMPAD, high budget

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 02:41 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: under $3000, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? must be more portable/ lighter than typical "brick" mobile workstations

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15/15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Revit, Rhino, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Premiere/After Effects, MS Paint

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? not gamer, may occasionally play casual games

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Need numpad for technical/excel work. interested in touch screen if an option, not essential. should be well-rounded otherwise. would consider laptop with "premium/luxury" finish but not a priority. I loved the M4600's upgradeability, and did so a few times, however if this has to be sacrificed for form factor that is ok.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd love Dell's Precision 5000 series, but no numpad. Or the ThinkPad P1, but no numpad. I understand these were probably removed to save space, but is there something between these lightweight mobile workstations and the typical "brick" mobile workstations? I've had to carry around a Dell M4600 for too many years. Am I asking for the impossible? If it comes down to it, I would take a heavier laptop with numpad over a lighter with none. Thanks in advance!

Sysadmin looking for office standard - screen size unimportant, United states, budget between $800-$1500

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 03:40 PM PST

Hello there (prequel meme unintended). I'm at a small organization (~150 users) and am hoping to find a system which I can instate as the office standard from now on. My goal is to maximize performance and cut out as much BS as possible (touchscreens, fingerprint scanners, etc). I want to be spending my money on the hardware that matters - we have a very complex software setup which will require as much power as we can afford. here's my form:

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States, $1500 Max

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specifications are most important but battery life is important for conferences and the like.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Semi-important. I would like it to be as thin as possible, but if it comes down to a small advantage in size but a large increase in price, I'd rather spend less for a slightly heavier system.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but if you can somehow find an OS-less version for cheaper, that would be sick. We re-image out of the box anyways.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Doesn't really matter, whatever is cheapest. Users dock into their workstation anyways.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Lot's of use of virtual machines, some coding/engineering, spreadsheets on spreadsheets. Typical office stuff.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As little of these extra features as possible. I want ALL of my money going toward the hardware that will directly affect performance - users have peripherals to use anyways.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm aiming for 16GB RAM at the LEAST, and the least storage possible to save money - we host our file servers so local storage hardly ever gets used save for a few documents here and there. Touch screens seem to only add to the price so I'm trying to avoid those. I will say that we are primarily a Dell office, and this matters particularly regarding docking station compatibility which is more complicated than it should be. I've been looking at XPS's and Latitudes but I'm having a hard time finding a model that doesn't have a touch screen, or has a decent processor for the price. To sum it up, I need performance with the least bullshit possible.

Thank you so much for your time!

Screen size doesn't matter, budget of ~1k in the US, looking for a college laptop

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 11:06 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase -About 1,000 USD and the US. More or less on this budget is okay, I'm taking all suggestions

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -2 in 1 would be cool for games, but it's not a priority. I'll take battery life over video quality, but both are better of course.

How important is weight and thinness to you? -I don't really care, just as long it's not an absolute chore to carry around everyday.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -I've worked with chrome and windows all my life, so those seem best

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -I would like to be able to play modded minecraft and modded sims 4, not necessarily at the same time. I also like to play online games, so fps does matter and storage space. I think there's some kind of space for active files and memory, but IDK

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** -I would like to be able to play modded minecraft (like modpacks) with a decent render distance and graphic quality. Modded Sims 4 on 64 bit would also be cool (I think that's the setting name)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -Touchscreen would be nice, but not a must. I would be plugging in/connecting a separate mouse for just everyday use, so USB and bluetooth are gonna be a must.

I am gonna be using this laptop for college, but I also still want to be able to play video games, watch videos/movies, and download files whenever needed. The goal is to have this laptop past these first 4 years of college, so durability and storage are gonna be super important. I'm also a concerned about it getting really hot, so any side tips on what to do to avoid heat issues are much appreciated

Looking for a lightweight (preferably Windows) tablet (US, < $600)

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 08:26 PM PST

I don't think I have gotten a good answer for this so far. I have spent quite some time trying to find a good Windows tablet (NOT a 2-in-1). I need it primarily for reading and writing on PDFs, and also to write notes etc. I have a good laptop that meets my other needs, and I do not really want a super powerful processor or a keyboard. A decent amount of RAM would be useful, in case I want to have multiple things/browser tabs open.

I really like OneNote on Windows, which is why I would like to get a Windows tablet. It automatically syncs with my Windows laptop as well.

If there is another option with good syncing with a Windows laptop and a good note-taking app, I am willing to consider other OS's.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I am in the US and willing to spend up to $600.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want a tablet with active stylus. I don't want a keyboard. Good battery life is preferable.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Want it to be lightweight enough to carry easily. Maybe < 1.5 lbs.?

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably Windows, open to other suggestions.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. As said before, I will not be doing anything beyond using a browser, reading PDFs, and note taking.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Don't need games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Want very good compatibility with writing tool/active stylus. Writing would be its primary purpose.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The only option I have found so far is the Surface Go, but I have seen complaints about battery life, and how it gets slow even with 3-4 tabs open. Anyone here have experience with using it?

Looking for a portable laptop that has good performance for gaming, but isnt a "gaming laptop." I will be using this for school, max price of around $2,000.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 11:28 PM PST

Hello everyone! I have been looking online and seen reviews. I don't really want to consider Macbooks because Apple isn't able to run a lot of apps I need for school (also not good for gaming). I've seen high reviews for the Dell XPS 13, but I'm not sure about its performance. I hope you kind of understand the amount of performance I'm looking for: high enough to play games at 60fps, but still portable enough to carry around all day. Also, I've heard good things about Huawei matebooks, but not many people use them right?

    What about Macbook vs Ipad?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 11:27 PM PST

MacBook is heavy to carry from place to place or tough to use during the tour. What about Ipad?

Especially, I want to know about battery backup?

And what if I want to open multiple tabs in chrome and open multiple apps like Trello, slack, skype at the same time?

And what about if I want to search something from all pages of a specific google sheet using the command [cmd + shift + H]? doable in iPad?

Please, let me know your opinion.

    Lightweight Laptop

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 10:47 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    < $1,500

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Specs and battery life are pretty important to me. If the 2 in 1 thing means those hybrid laptops that turn into tablets, I'm not really enthused by it, but wouldn't mind it either.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Honestly, the most important thing for me is weight. I think it needs to be at the most 3 lbs, but less is better

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    11" - 14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    League of Legends, MTG Arena

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Want a minimum resolution of 1440p. Touch-screen is nice but not required. Would strongly prefer having at least 1 USB port. Reliable build quality and keyboard seem to be a given. Solid state hard drive.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Occasional gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Civilisation.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch-screen would be good but not a necessity. Webcam. Microphone. HDMI input

Portable programming/light gaming laptop? (United States, $1500 USD budget)

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 09:16 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm in the USA. My budget is around $1500 USD, but I could go a tiny bit higher. Of course, lower is better if possible.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good specs and battery life for during class is always appreciated. I do not want a 2-in-1.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like something light and thin enough to carry around in a messenger bag or similar bag with other books in it, but it doesn't have to be the sleekest on the market.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'll be using Windows primarily, possibly dual-boot with Linux down the road.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" is a nice sweet-spot for me, maybe 15", but no larger.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No CAD or video editing, but I do play games frequently (more specifics below). I am a programming student so I need to run various IDEs like Eclipse, Visual Studio and NetBeans. I frequently have browsers open with 10+ tabs, and a lot of HD streaming video on YouTube, Twitch, etc. I'm also learning game dev as a hobby, but will be doing only 2D dev for now (roguelikes, etc).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't need something that runs RDR2. Lots of lighter games such as Factorio, Terraria, Wargroove, Oxygen Not Included, and Quake (the original one). It would be nice to be able to play some lower-end modern 3D games too, like Avorion, Risk of Rain 2, etc, but if that's not possible I'd sacrifice it for other priorities. Smooth 60fps is the minimum for all games, more is nice though.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I definitely want something durable, and a comfy keyboard is nice. Additionally, I would like to strike a balance of performance and heat mitigation. I use my laptop on my actual lap a lot, and I prefer to keep it cool.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't really need a hardcore "gaming laptop." I'd like something portable, fast, and durable that can also run at least lighter games at a good framerate while not bursting into flames. To give you an idea of what I've been thinking of, I have looked at the Lenovo X1 Carbon gen 7 (and Extreme, though battery and heat kills it), as well as Razer Blade 15 and Stealth 13. I absolutely love the look and feel of the Carbon's build and keyboard, but I'm not quite decided on the performance.

I've been doing some research and I've come down to either the Microsoft Surface 3 or the MacBook Air 13.3 in. As referenced earlier, I've never worked with a Mac OS before but I'm really curious how it would integrate with my phone. I would mostly use it for light Excel/Tableau/programming work - nothing too serious. I come to you all for advice on Surface vs. MB Air plus also any other recommendations that fit within my parameters. Thanks in advance!
