Should i get a strong GPU or CPU? Posted: 31 Dec 2019 07:34 PM PST Hello! I'm going to buy a laptop but I'm confused about the configs..i'm a college student so I'm mainly going to use it for programming and machine learning (beginner) and play a few games (not a heavy gamer) like GTA V, witcher 3, and cyberpunk 2077. So i have 2 options. 1) i7-9th gen + Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 4gb 2) i5-9th gen + Nvidia Geforce GTX 1660 Ti 6gb. I hope someone can clear my confusion. Thank you very much! :D The laptops I'm looking at are: 1) Acer Predator (UN.Q53SI.002) Core i5 9th Gen Windows 10 Laptop (8 GB, 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD, 6 GB Graphics, 39.62 cm, Black) 2) Acer Nitro 5 Core i7 9th Gen - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/256 GB SSD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics/NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1650) AN515-54-742F Gaming Laptop Edit : Adding the questionnaire for everyone to better understand the question. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Ans: Nope no additional requirements decent keyboard and trackpad can be icing on the cake. But i just need a performance laptop. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Ans: I might game at high or ultra settings but 30 FPS is great for me i have not qualms about it. Total budget and country of purchase: Ans: INR(INDIAN NATIONAL RUPEE) 70K-80K can stretch if the VFM is good. Purchasing in India Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Ans: Only best specifications for money. I don't need fancy RGB and stuff. How important is weight and thinness to you? Ans: Not at all wouldn't mind getting a 10kg brick if it can perform like a beast. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Ans: Any, but my options are limited to Windows i guess. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Ans: 15inch or more Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Ans: Machine Learning (beginner/noob), programming, very few games such as (GTA V, Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077). If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Ans: I'm a cheap ass gamer very few intresting AAA titles that I would like to play the popular ones and that's it like GTA V, the witcher 3, cyberpunk 2077 etc max 3~5 games. @30 FPS but high or ultra settings. The community so far has been so helpful thank you for so many great advices and answers! More are welcome.... [link] [comments] |
Cheapest Laptop/PC I can buy/build in order to play games such as GTA4 Posted: 01 Jan 2020 01:08 AM PST General question, I know Jackshit about anything pc related and the only thing I have is my laptop and I already know it can't run that game. Hell it barley runs older games like max Payne 1/2 on steam. Looking for something that can run GTA4 specifically though because I want to replay that game and it just be easier to get a PC that can do the job. If anyone has any recommendations it be helpful in what I can do [link] [comments] |

Laptop for engineering student and work Posted: 01 Jan 2020 01:12 AM PST I study mechatronics online and travel quiet a bit for work. Would like something that can run CAD software - doesn't have to be amazing at it but I don't want it to be glitchy. I do, do some CAD for work also. I'm a non-gamer, so that aspect of it is not important to me. I run some bulk spread sheets at times and large word documents with lots of image based reporting. I have been looking the Lenovo P52S and have found it one sale in my budget ~$1800AUD (~$1250USD)I would happily go with P52S the only thing stopping me is that it is one to two generation behind the current CPUs and GPU on the market. I could get a more highly spec'd gaming laptop for the same price or less. Advice is appreciated. Alternatives I am considering include: P955RT1 although it is quiet a long way out of my price range ($2500AUD) but has a Quadro P3200 Metabox Alpha which is in my price range but I could have either an RTX 2060 GPU or a GTX 1660ti in it [link] [comments] |
USA, <$800, general purpose with occasional game play Posted: 31 Dec 2019 11:57 AM PST My 2013 iMac is about to bite the dust and I need to find a replacement. I will mostly be using the laptop for internet browsing, music streaming, very basic office use (creating documents, scanning, editing, budget spreadsheets, etc). I occasionally like to play games such as Minecraft or Sims. I take a lot of photos and use Google Photos for editing and organizing. I've been a Mac user for 12+ years but I swapped my iPhone for the Google Pixel last year and I think I'm ready for something other than a Mac, mainly for affordability. * **Total budget and country of purchase:** USA $500-800 * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Touch screen would be nice but definitely not necessary. Will be mostly using at home so battery life not hugely important. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Moderate. Might occasionally take it when traveling and will probably use it while sitting on the couch or bed so don't want anything too big and bulky. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Middle range * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Occasional game play (Sims, Minecraft) and possibly light photo editing with Google Photos. There's a possibility I would want to use Lightroom or Photoshop at some point but that's not a high priority. [link] [comments] |

Considering a New Laptop - Advice/Help Appreciated Posted: 31 Dec 2019 11:16 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: Under $1000, USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 not necessary; would like good quality and specs for the money spent. How important is weight and thinness to you? Moderately important - I just don't want anything too large and bulky; I'm a university student and have to carry my laptop around. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I use mainly Windows and Linux, but am willing to consider Macs. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do programming and use Windows and Linux. I also use my laptop for personal use. I'm not a gamer, and don't do video/photo editing If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would like a good quality computer, preferably with an RJ45 Ethernet port. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been considering the following 2 laptops: Acer Aspire 5 A515-54G-797L 15.6" Laptop Computer (i7-10510U; NVIDIA GeForce MX250 2GB GDDR5; 16GB DDR4 RAM; 1TB Solid State Drive), ~$850: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NX.HN0AA.003 HP Pavilion Laptop - 15t (i7-8565U; Intel UHD Graphics; 16 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM; 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD), ~$630: https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-pavilion-laptop-15t-7me17av-1 What are your thoughts about these 2 computers? I don't have any first hand experience with Acer, so I'd appreciate insights into their reputation. Also, I don't know much about the build quality of these 2 laptops. Moreover, any laptop suggestions beyond the two I mentioned above would also be welcome. Any insights would be appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Torn between the Lenovo thinkpad T470s and the A485 Posted: 31 Dec 2019 02:38 PM PST Howdy all! I haven't made a big purchase like this in years and it's got me sweatin! Razor blade, xps 15, or thinkpad p1? Mostly photoshop. Some gaming? Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:58 PM PST I'm torn between these three laptops. Any suggestions? I will use it mostly for work ( I need to keep a LOT of photoshop and indesign files open at the same time. I do book layouts) but it's been a couple years since I've played many video games and I also kind of want to get back into that (heard good things about divinity original sin and the witcher and want to try them) however work is the priority. A friend of mine in the same line of buisness says he had a xps 15 and it fell apart on him. But his thinkpad has worked really smoothly. But I wanted other options on it. Any thoughts? Looking for a cheap (<$400) laptop to last, doesn't need to be beefy (USA) Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:21 PM PST Hello, my school laptop died recently and I'm looking for a not-so-powerful hold over for my last semester of schooling. It doesn't need to be very powerful (just needs to run firefox, some micorsoft office apps, and maybe a light CAD software). I would prefer certain standards like 1080p screen and 64-bit Windows 10. I would also like it to have an m.2 slot and a laptop HDD slot, so I can easily recover the files off of my old laptop. Anything else is really fair game.

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:18 PM PST Im open to other suggestions. These two are at my local store and I can get them for $800. Links provided. Edit: I don't know why the form shows up as a scrollbar [link] [comments] |

Seeking an affordable machine for doing some programming on longhaul flights and layovers. Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:01 PM PST I use desktop machines but have some long flights(10+ hours) in the coming months and would rather be able to be productive than sit and watch movies to pass the time. I use linux and compile some software(third-party) or my own (rust) as well as web dev with node/JS and React.
I've been considering(All sport 1080p 14-15.6" displays):
Open to other suggestions :) Currently swayed towards the Acer. [link] [comments] |

Looking for a Surface Book alternative Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:37 AM PST Hi guys I had a Surface Book 1 for two and a half years now. I was more or less very happy with it (some things I loved, some not), but now I am looking for something similar, but not from the Surface line. Total budget and country of purchase: Budget around 1800 dollars, would buy in Switzerland Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form factor would be nice, but not absolutely necessary. More important are the screen (see below) and a good keyboard. How important is weight and thinness to you? Should be below 4 lbs, so carrying it around is no heavy burden. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferred, Linux would be a bonus. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Important point: Should be around 13-14 inches and if possible 3:2 or 16:10 screen ratio and as a bonus non reflecting Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, but as a computer science student I will run some IDEs and maybe some Virtual Machines. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? no comment So in conclusion the most important points: Screen ratio and keyboard Edit: Formating [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2019 06:22 PM PST Hi everyone, This deal was last available in November on Amazon. You can take a look at what people thought of that deal on this post. Overall, the consensus was that it was an incredibly great deal even though this device has short comings. This deal is available on Newegg for the next 5 hours as of this post's release time. Although no discount is listed, the original price was $2,100 for this device when this deal was available on Amazon. So, this is effectively a $700 discount. Here are the specifications:
All for $1,399.99. Pros:
Cons:
My verdict: Although there are evidently thermal drawbacks on this device, what it has to offer for the price remains unmatched by other devices on the market. Considering the overall positive response int he past, I'd recommend this device for people who are in the market for a gaming device in this price range. If you want to take a look at other options, consider looking at my Best Gaming Laptops list that was last updated in October 2019. I will be updating this list for January 2020, so keep your eyes out for it. If you're looking for a general use device instead, consider looking at my Best General Use Laptops list that was last updated in November 2019. I will update that list one month after I update my Best Gaming Laptops list. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a good screen for coding, document viewing movies and light gaming Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:15 AM PST Hi, there! I currently own an HP probook 640 g1, which served me right all these years. My current problem is the screen, and it's kinda slowing down. Total budget and country of purchase: The budget is around 800 euros. Buying in Greece. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't care about 2 in 1, a good battery is important because I am on campus and I can't find chargers. The heaviest stress for the laptop is gonna be running solidworks and football manager, so I don't think a graphics card is needed. How important is weight and thinness to you? Since I carry my laptop a lot around campus and work - literally every day - I really want it to be as light and thin as it can be. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Idc Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Solidworks, maybe AUTOCAD. Mainly lots of coding. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Just Football Manager, nothing else. Finally, because of the use I can't stress enough the importance of the screen. A 2K or 4K screen would be preferable, but 1080p color accurate screens are fine as well. I am watching a lot on netflix on it as well, so the screen is paramount. I currently think about the surface lineup. Show a christmas deal of 200$ discount. But the 128Gb on the cheapest model seem pretty limiting, considering that you can't upgrade. I have a 500Gb ssd on my HP, that I want to put in the next laptop. Also because I type a lot, some people recommended me the thinkpad lineup. EDIT: format [link] [comments] |
Laptop for backpacking/camping Posted: 31 Dec 2019 04:52 PM PST Hello, I am planning on completing a long backpacking trip over the summer and would like a laptop to bring with. I want to use this laptop for 3D modeling with blender, specifically digital sculpting. This does not include rendering the models, I just want something to sculpt with while I'm in camp after a long day of hiking. The ideal laptop would allow me to use it for a couple hours a night for maybe a week. I plan on bringing along a battery pack or solar panels, but would still like something with good battery life. I also have a graphics tablet, no need for suggestions on that.
Thanks everyone, appreciate your support and advice on this. [link] [comments] |

Dell latitude e7250 or 5285 2 in 1 still worth it for the price? Posted: 31 Dec 2019 04:23 PM PST I'm looking for a laptop for university for a while since my old MacBook is starting to get very slow and heavy. I plan to use it the most for typing my thesis and I am planning to use it for at least two years. For now I am using an iPad for other stuff, but for multitasking, formatting documents and typing the iPad lacks. Dell Latitude e7250 (around €300) Dell Latitude 5285 2 in 1 (€350) The 7250 is an older laptop but I've noticed it is upgradable which could be great, but getting a newer model seems like a better option (although I'm not sure if a 2 in 1 would be a pain in the ass with the kickstand)? Also would both models be worth the money or could I do better for these amounts? They do come with a warranty of one year and are refurbished models. Since I know almost nothing about specs and laptops researching both did not enlighten me too much I would love to know what you think! [link] [comments] |
~15" CAD/CAM laptop, no gaming, 32GB+ RAM Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:05 PM PST Been a long time since I last looked at there laptop scene (had a Sager way back in 2003). Looking for a Windows laptop that can do CAD/CAM on the go, but preferably with 32GB of memory or more to run a Linux VM when I need to. I won't be doing any gaming on it, so graphics card would ideally be something geared towards CAM rendering like a Quattro. Form isn't a factor, other than a ~15" screen and enough battery to be useful as a laptop (i.e. not a "desktop" you can unplug for 15 mins). [link] [comments] |
Looking for a high end thin & light gaming laptop Posted: 31 Dec 2019 03:39 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: £2000 or less (but happy to go slightly above), United Kingdom Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for gaming, G-Sync would be nice. Don't want a 2 in 1. Battery life a nice-to-have. How important is weight and thinness to you? Important, do not want a hefty, chunky gaming laptop. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows only Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" or 17" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming and gaming. Games such as Battlefield V, Grand Theft Auto, Just Cause 4, FIFA and more casual games like Cities Skylines, Planet Coaster, Age of Empires. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Battlefield V at a decent framerate and I want a 144Hz or faster screen as I currently only have 60Hz with bad screen tearing. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen, fingerprint, optical drive not needed. Ethernet jack would be preferable. Decent keyboard is of high importance as I will be programming. Don't want a bad build quality. The most annoyingly common thing I see on laptops is downward firing speakers so a laptop with good speakers would be a plus. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Im thinking about a 17" laptop as I feel a bigger screen may be beneficial to Gaming so would be happy to get people's thoughts about 17" vs 15" for gaming. I quite like the Razer Blade Pro 17 as it has extremely good qualities but it does not have G-Sync, otherwise I was looking at the ASUS Zephyrus S GX502GW. May go for the Razer if I can justify the lack of G-Sync and I think 17" is beneficial. [link] [comments] |
(UK) <£300 laptop for teenager for school work and casual gaming Posted: 31 Dec 2019 04:31 AM PST Hi all, thanks in advance! I am helping my grandparents get a laptop for my cousin. I currently have access to Lenovo and HP discounts through unidays, so ones we can buy on these sites are preferred. She'll be needing it for school work, some coding (just Python atm which I don't think needs anything intensive?) and some gaming - but they already have a PS4 for any triple A games so it doesn't need to run super high spec games. Mostly little indie ones. Not too worried about size/weight/colour or anything else. I suppose I'm just looking for the best graphics, processing power and durability as possible on a low budget. We're also open to second hand ones from reliable sources. Thanks so much everyone. This kid never asks for anything because her parents struggle for money and she's too nice. She'll be thrilled with anything! [link] [comments] |
