Seems only 13.1GB out of 16GB allocated Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:47 AM PST Hi, I'm wondering why my BIOS is showing 16384MB of RAM while Linux only allocate 14277MB. Any idea ? ^^ [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:53 AM PST Hey all, I want to migrate from Windows to Linux but I have to keep a Windows "just in case of" for school and honestly, even if I don't play that much, I'd still like to not restrain myself on this. So I'm searching for some alternatives to dual boot. Anyway I'm not sure it's a solution to my problem since I'll probably use it really ponctually, and it will keep me space for nothing, and I don't find this really flexible to use. I thougt about a VM, but whatever I tried, it wasn't usable due to graphical limitation. I tried to passthough my dedicated Nvidia, but since I'm on laptop, the only GC left is the chipset and my Debian refused to run with this only. Tried this a year ago, but I don't think it changed since that. A "normal" VM end up being reaaaally laggy since it was only getting the chipset, and was kinda unusable. Anyway, I heard a little bit about Docker too, or of backbone OS, but I'm kinda lost in all this. Is there a possible solution, or am I stucked with a dual boot for now please ? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 02:55 PM PST So after a long time trying to get JACK working in Pop_OS! I've just broke it and it's no longer recognized, so far I don't know why I'm getting this error. Basically I've just installed jackd1 to substitute jackd2, after that no longer working at all. Just to know that I'm running Pop_OS! 19.04 [link] [comments] |
.cbr & .mp3 thumbnails not generated on Xfce ? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 02:19 PM PST Well , my .mp3 files only generate thumbnails for the ones with lower resolution covers , and .cbr files don't generate any thumbnails .... I think it's Thunar-specific ! Also last week when I deleted my thumbnail cache to refresh them , I noticed that .mp4 files stopped generating it's embedded covers and instead ffmpegthumbnailer uses a video frame instead. Anyone on Xfce having the same problem ? [link] [comments] |

Help With Masterwork Dwarf Fortress Posted: 31 Jan 2020 01:47 PM PST Hey everyone i was wondering if anyone knows about any guides for install MDF on Ubuntu. I downloaded a tar from here http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12448 I also installed the vanilla Dwarf Fortress with apt. Unpacking the tar created MDF-v1.31 Inside that folder Searching for the libncurses with apt-cache search only brought up version 5. I was able to get a .deb of libncurses6 but i havent been able to get it to install. Before this issue there were other missing dependencies that i was able to install. Thanks in advance for any help. OS: Ubuntu 18.04 CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700x Motherboard: B450 AORUS ELITE GPU: GP104 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] RAM: Team Vulcan 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3000 HDD: Seagate ST2000DM006-2DM1 2TB [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2020 01:30 PM PST Ok so I'm not a Linux expert but I am comfortable setting up a server as I currently have a Plex server on Fedora 31. And constantly looking to improve my Linux skills. Would Centos 8 be the best way to do this, or is the Fedora fine? And learn about compartmentalization. And would it be wise to learn how to do it without a GUI or keep the GUI. Current set up: Thinkpad t460 1TB storage & 8GB memory with Plex server. Has GNOME installed. Linux ISOs stored on external HDD What I want to do: Run pihole possibly in a Fedora or whichever recommended distro Run Plex server with current vpn that allows port forwarding for remote playing. Since I have no static ip Repeat process with Emby Learn how to use Docker or podman in the process Or other types of servers Thank you in advance [link] [comments] |
About kvm and the rest of the system Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:12 AM PST So i wanna switch my gaming desktop to linux(manjaro to be exact) and i know if i passthrough my gpu it's only accessible by my vm but what about cpu and ram, if i give 4 core of my 8600k 6 cores and 8 of my 16gb of ram to the vm, does that make it that linux always run off 2 cores and 8 gb or is it only if the vm is open, i tried to find clarification online but couldn't find a straight forward answer since as soon as you look for info on kvm its all about pcie passthrough. Edit: i need to run Windows in a vm if i make the switch since i play a lot of rainbow six siege. And I don't want to dual boot. [link] [comments] |

Why am i running outta disk space ? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:13 AM PST Hello Linux users and please excuse my dumb question! I remember a couple months ago when i was setting up my OS, i allocated a 100gb partition for Linux Ubuntu, and according to what i have read on the internet at that time 100gb seemed more than enough, however since yesterday i'm not able to download new programs using the sudo command in the command line and i get frequently a notification telling me that i'm running outta space, i also do not understand why my Ubuntu OS is only using 14.7gb when i have allocated 100gb to the system! Thanks in advance, much love! Edit: screen shots came later [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2020 11:06 AM PST Hey! I had some songs on my phone. I connected it to my PC (Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia) and the file browser automatically opened, I can see all the files, so I created a folder in my Music folder that would act as a playlist (it worked like that when I did it in Windows) and moved all the songs there. However, I can't see them on my phone anymore, even though they are there. How should I fix it? :/ [link] [comments] |
Is Audacity a Replacement for GarageBand? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:59 AM PST I currently use GarageBand for editing audio voice files and not for creating/making any music. Would Audacity be a good replacement for GarageBand or is there a better alternative? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:17 AM PST I am working in RHEL 7.6 and am trying to create a basic bash script that will run daily/hourly/monthly. I was very excited to hear that there is already a /etc/cron.daily as well as the others. I have places my scripts in the corresponding directory, and they will not run. I know the scripts work, because they can manually be run or scheduled through crontab and work fine. I would like them to be run through anacron, instead of Cron. The scripts have 755 permissions, and do not have file extensions in the name. var/spool/anacron says they were run today, but it definitely did not. I would really appreciate any insight! MacBook air alternative that doesn't break the bank Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:28 AM PST So I converted my girlfriend from Mac to Linux. She's currently running pop os on an older laptop I have her. She likes the small weight and profile of the MacBook air. I was wondering if there was an affordable used machine that was small but not a complete turd, to put pop OS on for her. She's going to sell all her crappple products. I'm so proud of her. Lol [link] [comments] |

Linux (Ubuntu) on a Chromebook? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:49 AM PST I'm interested in learning Linux but don't want to use it on my school laptop. My college requires certain Windows apps and I'm not too familiar with Ubuntu. With that said, I bought a used Lenovo C630 for cheap from a friend and wanted to know if Ubuntu could be installed to that machine? I read online information that involved Crostini, Chromebooks having (native?) support for Linux now but I prefer to hear from those who have experience with the device at hand. [link] [comments] |
