Does anyone have a touchscreen laptop where they use the touchscreen? Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:24 AM PST I'm thinking about getting a laptop and wanted to know how often people actually use the touch screen functionality, I'd only be using it for coursework and movies, I've got a custom build pc for games, also being an IT tech I'm thinking about future proofing it with the ability to upgrade to nvme drives etc so hopefully can find one to be able to open up and upgrade! Thanks... [link] [comments]

Lenovo ThinkPad E595 (AMD Ryzen) Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:46 AM PST Just purchased this laptop for my middle child, I purchased it with 2 x 8GB memory. And it seems quite good. They will use it for high school and some photo/video editing. I am considering a second for my eldest, who also likes to game. Unfortunately, Lenovo seems to have hobbled this laptop by supplying it with DDR4-2400 SODIM... It has been suggested that you can improve the GPU performance by a considerable margin by installing DDR4-2666 SODIM modules. Is this correct? Why would Lenovo do this? [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Jan 2020 12:08 PM PST I posted originally on r/SuggestALaptop but I figured I could post here as well: This is my current laptop: Lenovo ideapad u530 touch, 1 TB of storage (879GB to use), intel i7-4510u, 8gm RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M with 2GB video RAM, windows 8 . Its nearly 6 years old and has slown down considerably, has a damaged screen and the monitor has partially separated from the rest of the body (again), so I can't really take it anywhere. I had purchased a new laptop, an HP Gaming laptop in September, but unfortunately my car was broken into and it was stolen, a whole 4 days after purchasing...yeah. HP Pavilion Gaming 15-Inch Laptop, Intel Core i5-9300H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, 12GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Windows 10 (15-dk0041nr, Black) - these were the specs. What I'm looking for doesn't necessarily have to match or edge out the specs of the HP laptop, but if it does then that's a win. At the moment I'm going to school for Computer Programming and Analysis associates (I'm not a big programming person but I'm looking forward to diving into it over the next year), and hope to expand on that in the future. Researching the requirements I see for different school's CS departments has influenced my criteria. Best Specs for the money would be #1, good battery life next. I don't really see a need for me to have a 2 in 1 device. Screen size: 15-17 inch screen is fine. If this means greater weight, that's also fine I can handle a couple pounds of electronics. At worst, I'll get a separate carrying case for the laptop. OS: I'm used to Windows, so that would be the main system. Since I would be going into CS, I suppose being able to dual boot Linux would be necessary, as that is a common suggestion. Processor: i5 should suffice. 8th or 9th gen. I'm not really knowledgeable on competitors that are equivalent in performance. GPU: preferably a dedicated card, just in case future projects or courses require it. Most laptops I've seen within the price range have NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 or 1650. Would be a nice addition as well for casual gaming. My understanding is 4GB of video RAM is ideal versus 2GB. I'm not sure about how AMD or other competitors would compare. RAM: 16GB would be preferable. Storage: 256GB SSD seems to be minimum, 500+ recommended, but I can manage with 256. I could get an external HDD if necessary, or if there is a suggestion with both HDD and SSD that would work. Keyboard: the HP I felt had too condensed of a keyboard for my taste. I wouldn't mind something wider – even if it meant having a larger screen. I also like having a numpad. Personal preference. Other: USB 3+ and an HDMI port would be nice. Touch screen isn't necessary, nor a finger print reader as I don't imagine having sensitive data to work with. Build quality being reliable is a plus, I don't want it to break apart within a few months. Room to upgrade storage and RAM. Part of the reason why I got the HP is because it had the option to upgrade capacity. So, even if it starts out a little on the lower end, if there's a chance to upgrade components to boost performance and future proof it for a few more years that would be ideal. Same with the battery, but I think that's a trickier part. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No CAD or serious video editing software. I do some little video montages of my workouts but I don't need any high quality editing programs for it. At the present time, outside of visual studios, eclipse/netbeans, MS office, I'm not entirely sure what software I'll be needing to run for my classes as of yet, if I'll be needing to run virtual machines etc. Haven't been exposed to more yet, but I'd rather be on the stronger side than anything. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming is mostly steam games, rocket league, ksp, probably would run fortnite with friends every once in a while. However I'd like to be able to run them smoothly with medium-medium high settings, 50-60 fps. Currently my laptop can hardly run any game even with lowest settings. I am willing to listen to alternatives for a new laptop too, either outside the price range or with different specs. If theres wiggle room with my budget and I see good reason to invest in it for the long term then great. [link] [comments]

Powerful laptop or desktop and laptop? Posted: 01 Jan 2020 06:50 AM PST I have $1000 to spend and I need a laptop for university. I like playing games, but I would also need a relatively portable and work oriented laptop. Basically, would it be cheaper in the long run to get a cheaper laptop and desktop or just keep replacing a nicer laptop? I try to keep laptops as long as possible but I'm considering this option after my previous laptop bricked in just under 3 years. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:48 AM PST Bought a new LG Gram about 2 weeks ago. It has a 72Wh battery (All Day Battery claimed by LG themselves). However, it seems that I only get like 11 hours per full charge. Is this normal? Or should I take it to the service centre? [link] [comments]
What right now is the most reliable laptop? Posted: 01 Jan 2020 04:09 AM PST Currently looking for a laptop with the least failure rate. Currently have the Macbook Pro mid-2012. I had this baby for 7 years and looking for something that would atleast last 7 years. Recently, I have been looking into the thinkpads by lenovo but I am a bit hesitant because it might not last for 7 years or so. Thanks in advance, kind people! [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Jan 2020 06:41 AM PST I just got a Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Gaming Laptop and was wondering what the best Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, etc programs to get are. My laptop came with a 30 day free trial of McAfee, but that will be running out soon here. [link] [comments]

My laptop is slower than a 95 year old man, only a few years old? Fresh windows install didn’t help! Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:25 AM PST So I currently own a version of this laptop. The key difference is mine has a 2TB HDD and 16GB of RAM, and a 2.2Ghz CPU which I believe is an i7 I bought it ~2 years ago and it came preloaded with Windows 10. The first 9 months or so it was lightning fast. Almost no boot time from completely off to desktop. I just did a fresh windows install to see if that would help my issue. After cleaning the laptop I installed all the drivers again. But it's just about as slow. 2-3 minutes to boot into desktop. 2 minutes for my desktop to display. Then 4-5 minutes to open whatever app I need. I use the laptop for work and school and I'm just thinking about getting a MacBook, but wanted to see if you fine people had a solution! Posted: 01 Jan 2020 03:57 AM PST Hi, so my new Asus Zephyrus GX502GW supports displayport over USB-C. When I connect the laptop to my monitor using displayport will it utilize the integrated GPU (Intel graphics) or the dedicated GPU (RTX 2070)??? Thank you for the help! [link] [comments] |
