Brother’s looking for a university laptop that he can use for Drawing and CAD Posted: 27 Jan 2020 01:28 AM PST As above posting for the my brother, he's a got a budget around 2-3 thousand nzd (1500-2000usd). He's doing industrial design so wants something he can draw on, have adobe photoshop etc capabilities but also to do CAD so that's solid works, autocad. The last one he came to me was a surface laptop pro but I wasn't sure that the shared memory card would have enough juice to do what he wanted it to. He's also really keen on a sleek slim design as he doesn't like the bulky gaming laptops which are more my style. Thanks for the help to anyone that posts, chur [link] [comments] |

Dell XPS 7590 15" vs Surface Laptop 3 15" Posted: 26 Jan 2020 06:31 PM PST I am looking to get a laptop to replace both my 2017 MacBook - something with a bigger screen, and my. desktop PC. I am trying to learn programming and wanted more screen real estate than my MacBook as well as able to run visual studio. I initially was settled on a Dell XPS 15" 7590 w/ dedicated graphics and FHD screen, but doing some more research people seem to say the 4k screen is SO much better for coding. I couldn't find a 4k XPS to look at in person, but I found a 15" SL3 vs 13" XPS w/ FHD. The SL3's screen is so much better so I think the 15" FHD wouldn't work for me. The OLED screen kinda scares me vs the IPS panel on the surface. I've heard of weird OLED problems. I tried both keyboards and I like them both. So what do you guys think for coding.. 15" SL3 vs XPS 15 w/ UHD?? Prices seem pretty similar. I will be using this at coffee shops / library lots as well as connecting to an external display at home. I am just learning to code so I'm not doing anything intensive..... yet. [link] [comments] |
Programming ultra slim / light laptop (FR - 1.2k€) Posted: 26 Jan 2020 01:41 PM PST
I'd like to keep it under 1.2k€, buying anywhere from Western Europe (delivered in France)
2 in 1. Then what is a good battery life.. above 4-5 hours of uptime without charging at least would be sweet.
Weight is the key point, this is a laptop I want to travel a lot with. ~2-2.5 pounds / 1.2-1.3kg max would be ideal.
Windows, however the laptop can come with no OS pre-installed (I actually prefer it that way, since it's cutting the price down)
14" - 15'6" (min/max) => 1080p or better resolution.
Nope, the laptop will be dedicated mainly to programming & few extra stuffs such as watching videos/movies, but no GPU intensive activity. (I don't think I need a dedicated GPU). Multiple instances of Visual Studio instead, along with multiple browser tabs opened etc (Heavy RAM/CPU usage however, multi-threaded.) I'd need 16GB of RAM & Quad Core at least. Hard Disk performances will also matter for I/O operations. (M2 SSD ideally with 512-1To)
I won't be with this laptop.
As mentionned before, this laptop will be mainly used for programming, therefore keyboard quality and feel is important.
Probably asking for a lot, not sure something such as what I'm asking exists, the lighter & thinner while being able to respect what I'm wishing for, the better. If waiting for Ryzen 4 powered laptop is better, willing to wait I'm in no rush. Thanks for any input/advice. [link] [comments] |
Large (21+ inch) laptop (or portable screen), Belgium, no budget Posted: 27 Jan 2020 02:55 AM PST For an art performance I'm looking for a large (21 inch or more) portable screen, which can loop a 1080p movie. This screen will be carried by a person in her arms for hours, so the lighter the better. I was exploring the possibility of just carrying a 2 in 1 laptop, however couldn't find any big enough. Are there such big laptops?
Belgium, and no real budget, but the lower the better since it only needs to loop a video it shouldn't require too much power.
Must be 2 in 1 so it can look like just a portable screen. More battery life is better. It's meant to only loop a video while being carried, that's it.
The lighter the better, since it has to be carried for hours.
Any OS is fine.
At least 21 inch, biggest is good too.
None, just playing 1080p video. It would be nice if it could handle 4K too, but not necessary.
N/A
None
The idea is that an artist will carry this as a portable screen on her body. The screen will loop a video. The performance will take several hours. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Jan 2020 07:27 AM PST Total budget and country of purchase: -$1500 USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money, weight will be considered but not the highest priority. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not the highest priority. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Heavy Adobe Premiere Pro and Lightroom/Photoshop user. 4k video editing will occur. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Since mouse will be primary input device, no major concerns about trackpad. A more mechanical feeling keyboard would be nice but not required. Touchscreen not a requirement. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am looking for the most power in terms of a graphics card and RAM I can get in this budget, but I am also concerned about being able to switch out hard drives or adding RAM in the future. My current tower computer has lasted me 10 years, and I am looking for a true desktop replacement, and part of that is being able to exchange hard drives when they eventually fail. Therefore, a laptop where this is easier would be preferred. For 4k video editing, I am assuming I'll need 32 GB RAM, but just verifying that this is the case. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Jan 2020 10:09 PM PST Hi There, I have been planning to buy a Tuf Fx505 Gaming Laptop and since I am coming from an ultrabook with discrete graphics, i do not really mind if this is "entry level" in terms of performance (and i also do not have the budget for 1650 and above.) While going through the cheaper variants of the Fx505, i was initially going for the Fx505dd: Fx505dd- Ryzen 5 3550H-8GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 3gb - 512gb SSD which has the Gtx1050 3gb variant as i've read that the Fx505dy: Fx505dy- Ryzen 5 3550H-8GB Memory - AMD RX560x - 512gb SSD has a slower Rx560x (14cu version) compared to the stock Rx560x found in other laptops. However, I have found videos on YT which suggest that gaming performance on the Fx505dy are generally better and that the Fx505dd (could be Max-Q?) runs on higher temps (90C). Which variant would you recommend? Thanks :) [link] [comments] |

2in1 laptop for under $500 cad Posted: 26 Jan 2020 07:37 PM PST Hey guys, I'm looking for a 2 in 1 laptop under $500 CAD for my girlfriend. Notebook with RTX 2060 or GTX 1070 Max Q? Posted: 26 Jan 2020 01:20 PM PST I am interested in the MSI GS65 but I am not sure witch one of the graphic cards should I chose? In benchmarks the 1070 Max Q outperformed the RTX but all Benchmarks I see are round about 10-15 months old. So did the situation changes is the RTX card now better, new drivers or something? In my country the GS65 with 1070 sells for 1450 euros and the RTX 2060 version for 1499 euros, basically the same. [link] [comments] |

Legion Y7000 and Y740 with a $200 price difference between them, which to choose? Posted: 26 Jan 2020 05:44 PM PST I pretty much just want a decent laptop with enough grunt to edit video and audio on Premier, do some music production and play some gaming. Have budgeted around AUD$2000. They're both packing: 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9750HF (6C / 12T, 2.6 / 4.5GHz, 12MB) Memory: 2x 8GB DIMM DDR4-2666 They both have 1TB storage. The only real difference is in the graphics card: The Y7000 has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5, whereas the Y740 has the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6 The Y7000 is $2058 and the Y740 is $2229. The Y740 is on sale, at a reduction of around 800$ - but is it worth me paying the $200 extra for it? [link] [comments] |
Laptop for programming and light editing/gaming with a great display, keyboard and trackpad Posted: 26 Jan 2020 05:38 PM PST It will mainly be used for programming and notes with some light gaming/editing on the side. I currently have a macbook, but since i got a windows desktop at home, i would like to keep the same ui, terminal commands and keyboard layout/shortcuts across my devices.
1500 Euros, though preferably less.
Somewhat stylish. Thin bezels and decent battery life.
Thinness isnt too important. Should be pretty lightweight tho.
Windows/Linux
13-14
Needs to do some light gaming and editing. I do some personal video projects that i would like to render on the go. rendering speed isnt important, i just want to be able to do the actual editing in Premiere Pro without crazy lag. Same with gaming. Want to play some light games once in a while.
hearthstone, LoL, WoW. low settings 30 fps minimum.
I study Data Science and therefore use a lot of time in front of my laptop for university, work and personal projects, so the most important aspect will be the screen, keyboard and trackpad. I dont want to go down on quality in these categories. I heard OLED displays are the new talk of the town.
So far i have looked at the XPS 13, X1 Carbon and HP Spectre 360x. They all seem like good options, but its hard to say anything about display, keyboard and trackpad without actually having it. They also seem quite expensive for my requirements, but that may just be my lack of knowledge on laptop prices. The matebook has been on the radar as well. [link] [comments] |
Help finding an ultralight laptop in the US @ ~$3k Max Posted: 26 Jan 2020 10:06 AM PST Hey all, I'm hoping to find a laptop for a friend who's putting a lot of emphasis towards it being lightweight for constant travel, but also has full-size ports as they're not about that dongle-life. They're coming from an imported Panasonic J10 and loved it's light weight (2.2lbs) and were okay with its thickness as long as it was able to house full-sized USB Type A ports and HDMI ports. Any help would be greatly appreciated. * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Between $2,000 to $3,000 * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specifications, but not opposed to a 2-in-1 * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Weight is the #1 priority, as close to 2lbs as possible. But thickness doesn't matter. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Must be Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Mostly for Internet/Office productivity apps with some photo editing via Photoshop CC * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A no gaming * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Most important besides being lightweight, are a full-size USB 3 port (type A), full-size HDMI port, and webcam if at all possible. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** They're not a fan of the XPS 13 because it's too heavy and USB Type C only. Thanks everyone. [link] [comments] |
