I couldn't be happier with this wallmounted setup I just finished with my dad. I plan to make a whole DIY post on the processes at some point. I also need a displayport to HDMI cable to get the second monitor connected.

People pointed out that i put the RAM in the wrong slots. I switched it to 2 & 4 and my performance jumped from the 6th percentile to the 38th. I haven't tried overclocking it yet but at least I'm in the main curve now. UserBenchmark

Not listed below is a 750GB HDD I had laying around for extra storage.

Is it worth it to upgrade from 1080p to 1440p?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 01:01 PM PST

I recently upgraded my pc to a ryzen 3600 and a gtx 1080ti. A few months before, i bought a 27 inch 1080p 144hz monitor. I wasn't expecting to upgrade my hardware, but i found some excellent black friday deals, and now I feel my hardware can do 1440p pretty well.

Is it worth the hassle to sell my old monitor on ebay and get a 1440p monitor? It seems like a lot of effort to ship something that large, and I'd really prefer not to use craigslist. Given that i'll likely lose some money overall from selling my 1080p monitor, is the upgrade to 1440p worth it?

Got drunk, spent a lot of money. Will this work?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 11:58 AM PST

I've wanted to build a PC for a while now. I asked my brother-in-law what he would buy after we'd already had quite a few drinks. Then with surprisingly zero hesitation, I ordered all the parts. I don't regret spending the money, but I do want to make sure it'll work optimally since this will be my first build.

I'll be doing a lot of VR but also want this to be my media center and plan to play most games I'm the living room on our 70" LCD.

Anyways - what do you all think?

Also, ordered a MSI 2080S trio from Amazon but I'm not sure if it'll fit the case. I think I might be able to move the front case fan up to get enough clearance. So I'll either use the 2080S Founders edition or the MSI 2080S trio. Am I correct in assuming that the MSI would be the better choice if it fits the case? I'll return whichever I don't use.

Edit - had wrong CPU and Ram listed on link. Sorry about that.

Will 91% isopropyl alcohol work for cleaning the thermal compound off of my CPU?

    Never ending build

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 07:10 AM PST

Hey guys, my build is semi-complete, I have been working at it for months and months now and I've been making a decent bit of prep greed with it. I had a lot of computer problems in spring which really hampered my plan of waiting for the Zen2 stuff to come out, I currently have a 2700x, but I've just made the jump from a lowly little 1080p 60hz gaming setup to now 1440p 144hz setup. Holy cow I cannot believe I waited this long, I am absolutely blown away at the difference! I do enjoy my build, but I also have the chance to upgrade some more stuff but unfortunately I don't exactly know where would be the most impactful... through PC part picker I have made up a near exact replica of my rig and even included the monitors to show what resolution I am gaming at. To me, it seems like memory would be the next step to upgrade, or maybe CPU? I really don't know, I have a fair bit of stuttering and slight lag when I close out or open some applications that is very frustrating and I am trying to eliminate it.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Zvw3Rk

I'm considering going with this RAM https://www.newegg.com/product/N82E16820232861?m_ver=1 but I don't know if it would work as well with my current setup since it's not a 3XXX series cpu

I'm at a loss, if anyone can look and see if there are any major items off the top of their heads that could be the culprit I would love any and all feedback. Sorry for the horrible formatting, I'm on mobile :P

I cant tell the difference between my 4k and 1080p monitors.

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 10:00 AM PST

I watched a 4k movie on both of the monitors at the same time to test if I could see a noticeable difference and I could barely see anything to differentiate the two. Did I not set up my 4k monitor correctly?

My new motherboard died after inserting 2nd GPU

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 01:35 PM PST

I just built a new pc, when I tried to insert my old gpu to the second pcie slot to do gpu passthrough the motherboard stopped posting.

No leds are lignting nor fans spinning...

The pc worked great before inserting the second GPU, the only problem I had is the bios gui being very slow (latest bios).

    Specs:

    • Msi x570-a pro
    • Ryzen 5 3600
    • Corsair vengeance lpx 2x8gb ddr4 3600mhz pc4-28800
    • New gpu: Sapphire rx580
    • Old gpu: sapphire hd7750

    Already tried:

    1. Running with only CPU, 1 dimm, 1 gpu (old and new) and nothing connected.
    2. 2 different PSU I know are working.
    3. Running the MB without CPU and RAM to check if the "EZ debug" leds are working (they aren't).
    4. Connecting a buzzer
    5. Running it outside the case
    6. Turning it on with a screwdriver
    7. Clearing cmos between various tries.

Anything else to try before returning this pos motherboard to amazon?

Things i did: re-installed fresh new windows.

Advice on VR graphics cards ( now SFW )

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 12:51 PM PST

    Hi.

Sorry for the repost I mistakenly flaired the last one NSFW causing a certain amount of consternation. I assure you this post is completely safe for work which will be either a relief or a disappointment depending on what you thought a NSFW post on a computer build message board would look like.

    THE ORIGINAL POST SANS FLAIR:

Been enjoying VR, and last year upgraded to a Radeon RX VEGA 64 Nitro+ 8GB HBM2 PCI-Express Graphics Card. It was great with Skyrim but it's having real problems with more recent games like Stormlands at med-high settings.

I've heard that the vega is a great card but has trouble with VR and that the Nvidia cards handle VR much better.

I was considering upgrading to something like a GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming OC 3X 8192MB GDDR6 but I don't like the idea of buying another £500 graphics card only a year later, especially as I have other components that are far older:

    Current Build:

    Processor: Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz, 4008 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

    Ram: er… 16DB DDR3 at 2133mhz ( don't know much about Ram )

    Motherboard: Z170A KRAIT GAMING (MS-7984)

Currently upgrading to 2x 1TB Samsung 970 EVO

I've been assured that changing any of those components won't help as much as upgrading my graphics card, so I guess my question is, if I bite the bullet and upgrade the card am I really going to see a difference significant enough to justify spending £500 on the second graphic card in as many years ?

Finally built my first gaming computer!

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 01:52 PM PST

First gaming computer I've ever owned/built. It's not the fanciest build but it's mine and I'm proud of it. All in all I spent about $650 in total for all the components including the price of a monitor. Also with purchasing my processor and GPU I received codes for 2 games and a total of 6 months of game pass that I was able to flip for $60 so technically this build cost was under $600 dollars. Most items I was able to purchase myself with the exception of the mobo, case, and the 500gb ssd I received those as Christmas presents. Building this setup was a lot easier than expected, although I did watch quite a few build videos on YouTube over the last couple months. This was a really fun experience and I will be back in the next few months once I build a second computer for my girlfriend.

    Desktop running Windows XP

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 01:04 PM PST

Looking to play older games ( Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed etc, type games) that don't run on Win10.

Need recommendation on a desktop PC that is the last of the Win XP machines to hit the market. Specifically what process (i heard i3 will be good enough, but what generation) + must have newer video port (hdmi, DVI etc.).

Machine will be air-gapped / not connected to intranet, so not worried about security etc.

Why is transferring my operating system from one drive to another so difficult?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 02:25 PM PST

M.2 Drives, such as the Samsung 970 EVO starting at around 80$, are on the rise and they have only been getting more popular over time. Last night, I was lucky enough to upgrade to an M.2 NVMe drive from my HDD. I looked up tutorials on how to transfer my OS from the HDD to my M.2 SSD but was completely turned off by the methods of how to do it because of how shady/sketchy they looked. The most popular software to move your OS is EaseUS, but it stops you from transferring your OS right before you try and constantly throws ads at you so long as you have it installed. This is no big deal because I can just use another software right? Unfortunately, last night I used a software that was recommended to me by a YouTuber. It successfully transferred my OS to my M.2 drive, but I have no idea if the data transferred was optimized to be on a M.2. Moreover, my previous HDD was locked, telling me that I need access to see the files in it. Maybe this is a dumb question but after years of having SSDs become increasingly popular, why isn't transferring OS easier? What is the easiest method?

Can I just plug in my old HDD

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 01:59 PM PST

So I'm upgrading my build but basically just building a whole new system. I have a new MoBo, Cpu, Gpu, ram, and ssd. My issue is that I'm not sure if I can just plug the old HDD of my previous build in and have it work fine. I plan on installing a new copy of windows on my ssd. Should I install windows on the ssd and then try and format the old drive? I don't really know much about this and I'd just like to have windows on my ssd and have an HDD for schoolwork or games. Ps I don't care about anything on the HDD. I'd just like the extra storage.

Just got this Dell Optiplex 9020 Mini Tower (Using as my dedicated streaming rig for meow but will be upgrading) The issue is what PSU should I get and if I will need a motherboard upgrade as well to fit a decent 6gb/8gb GPU. Posted: 26 Dec 2019 03:55 PM PST

    Hi,

So I'm building a pc on my own for the first time ever and here are the parts I've bought so far:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xL6BvW

    Basically:

    • AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
    • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3000 memory
    • Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500 GB M.2 - 2280 NVME SSD
    • MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6 GB VENTUS XS OC
    • Thermaltake Versa H18 MicroATX Mini Tower Case

I'm not sure which motherboards and (especially) PSU would be best suited, or if I'm missing any other parts.

Really excited to finish my build and I owe a huge thanks to this community!!

    Happy holidays everyone :)

New build freezes then restarts with pink dots on the screen

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 07:11 AM PST

I just built my new pc a couple of weeks ago, and the past week it has frozen several times (3 times while gaming, once while I was in chrome) and restarts. Then it has small pink dots all over the screen until I reinstall the driver.

The display driver is stopped and I have to uninstall and reinstall it to get it to work again. Could I have a defective gpu?

Instead of buying me a new computer/ building a new one, my dad wants to add more memory to our 9 year old piece of garbage. I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure just adding memory won’t make a large difference in speed, how do I explain this to him ?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 03:37 PM PST

I tried saying it won't make a big difference but he already tried twice, the parts he bought were too big for the computer apparently.

My monitor gets black and says "no input" after a while

    Posted: 26 Dec 2019 01:16 PM PST

My monitor gets black and says "no input" after a while, it's really strange since I have recently built this new PC.
I got one screen connected to DP and one to HDMI, they both go black at the exact same time, so it has nothing to do with a specific cable or port.
My gpu is a Sapphire RX 5700 XT Pulse, CPU is Amd 5 3600, mobo is Aorus B450 Elite. It worked just fine for about two weeks, then this started happening every few hours - every few minutes. It is super annoying and I am losing all hope in this PC, I spent all my money on this so I am very dissapointed. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Maybe even a solution?
