USA decent gaming laptop with low maintenance <$600

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:52 PM PST

I've been having a hard time finding a low priced laptop. There's a ton of cheap laptops I've found on laptop deal subreddits, but I have no idea what I'm looking at.

I mostly just play classic WoW, but I would like to experience some more modern PC games. I don't need to have my graphics up to anything incredible, but I really don't want any lag.

Anything over a couple hundred dollars is a very big purchase for me, so I want something that will last.

About four years ago, I bought an MSI gaming laptop for $1100, and played Diablo III and Overwatch on it, but noticed it was feeling really hot. I bought a cooling pad at the suggestion of someone at Fry's electronics, but turns out I should have opened the thing up and put in some sort of glue. The laptop completely crapped out on me within a year before I read about that.

It's such a big investment, and I can't risk spending so much money on something that I clearly don't know enough about.. but I really just want to play some games and not worry about it if that's even possible.

I hope this is structured alright, and I appreciate any suggestions you guys might have.

    Y740 w/ RTX 2070 Max-Q or RTX 2060?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:07 AM PST

I have the opportunity to choose between Y740 2070 Max-Q and 2060, with the same processor (i7 9750H), storage, RAM and display of 17" 144hz G-sync. I'll use it for gaming only.

The one with 2070 Max-Q is more expensive than the 2060, but to my understanding the Max-Q of 2070 is the performance equivalent to the laptop version of 2060? Why wouldn't I pick the one with 2060 as it's about 300 euro cheaper?

I can't find benchmarks of the 2060 version, so can't know for sure of its gaming performance. I know the Max-Q cards are heavily depended on the laptops cooling abilities, though.

Which one of the two would you pick?

    Lenovo C940 10th gen i5 v. i7

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:05 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm considering purchasing a Lenovo C940. Definitely 16GB of RAM. However, I'm struggling to decide if I should go with the 10th gen i5 or the i7 ($150 price difference). I do some web development (nothing serious - wordpress / elementor) and use photoshop. Obviously, MS Office, web browsing, etc.

Is there a huge difference between the 10th gen i5 and i7?

Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide!

What's your opinion on this refurbished Dell Lattitude E7440 i5-4310U

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 02:49 AM PST

I need a new laptop for school and I'm on a quite the tight budget. I found this seemingly great refurbished laptop for $260. It's fitted with 8gb of RAM, 256gb Samsung SSD mSATA, and has a backlit keyboard.

Do you think this is worth the price? It's within my $300 budget. Is the price too good to be true? I'm aware the processor is a bit old. The seller mentioned that I can get about 1 to 2 hours of battery life from it.

Under £700 - Best Specs For Money

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 05:00 PM PST

Total Budget & Country of Purchase:

    £700 - United Kingdom

Do you prefer 2 in 1 form, decent battery life, or best specs for money?

Best specs for money definitely. The battery life isn't important since the laptop will always be in arms reach of a plug socket.

How important is weight and thiness to you?

Neither matter that much. Just not extremely bulky/thin.

    Which OS do you require?

    Windows!

    Preferred Screen Size?

I'm not picky w/ the screen size. As long as it's reasonable I don't mind. (I watch videos non-full screened don't @ me)

Which software will you be running on this device?

Just a few games. Mainly League of Legends. Editing Software.

Certain FPS you want your device to reach?

On easy to run games 100+. Something like Counter-Stike - 60+ FPS. I run every game on the lowest settings possible.

    Additional Comments:

With the suggestion - if you could make it a Amazon link - since I have a £150 Gift card. Otherwise, my budget is £550

Researching for months but can’t decide on laptop for gaming/School.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:23 AM PST

Hey guys, Here's what I'm looking for in a laptop..

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd like a good responsive keyboard and halfway decent build quality. I'm a junior in college but I'll be going to grad school so I'd like something that will last. Touch screen or finger print reader isn't necessary but would be nice. I'll be plugging in a mouse so the touchpad/ track pad doesn't need to be fancy but also good enough to when I do school work.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I sustained an injury a couple years ago ( broken arm) so I don't have much holding strength. Something lighter than 4.5 pounds would be great.

Total budget and country of purchase:

1000-1200$ USD and I am in the United States

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2 in 1 has never really impressed me so it won't be necessary, battery of atleast 5 hours is good enough.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Both are important enough.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    Screen size?

    Between 11 to 15 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Planet Coaster, Planet Zoo, Zoo Tycoon, Sims, Sun City, Roller Coaster Tycoon. I'm into tycoon games so preferably something with good CPU as most of those games once I get to a certain size of park/attraction I'd prefer for things not to get choppy. I also like League of Legends and Smite. Microsoft Office as well.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Doesn't have to be beautiful but I do care about performance. Lag is never fun.

    Hope that helps! Thanks :)

Hello! I have only had Macbook Pros but am looking for a different laptop and open to other brands besides Mac. I don't utilize all of the applications that my Macbook Pro has to offer. I typically use my computer for word processing and watching videos. Thank you!

Total budget and country of purchase:

    1200 - USA

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best specifications.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I would like it to be portable and not too bulky.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows or Mac.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No gaming.

    Visual Effects and Virtual Reailty

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 08:47 PM PST

Hi! I'm a Visual Effects student, and I'm interested in buying a laptop that I'll be able to do school work on. Currently, we're doing our class work on software named Maya, which involves 3D modelling, animation and rendering, which can use up a lot of RAM. I'd also like to use this laptop for gaming, specifically VR gaming, as I just have an Oculus Quest that now supports Oculus Link.

I'm getting a student grant, so my budget is £1,500. Thank you 🥰

    $1,000 programming/productivity laptop

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 08:44 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,000 would like to stay around $800, but $1,000 would be doable. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like the best specifications, I won't be moving around too much so battery life won't be an issue, and wouldn't use the 2 in 1 form factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? No preference, again, won't be moving around much so anything works for me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I mostly run Arch Linux, if specs permit, I would dual-boot with Windows, but Arch Linux is what I mostly run.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 15" would be preferable, if anything, bigger, not too much of a fan of 12-13".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. This is mostly a programming laptop, no game development so no graphics intensive work. I would run Firefox, some command line applications, compilers, etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Only game I would really play is Minecraft, so higher settings at 60 FPS would be nice.

    • *Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope, don't need anything too flashy. I got a good external keyboard and mouse that I will mostly use. As long as it's got 3 USB ports, it's good for me.

    • *Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I do use an external monitor, so HDMI output world be nice. Display Port would be fine, I can get adapters for that, just so long as it can handle a 1080p external monitor. Again, this laptop will mostly be for programming, and if any games, Minecraft.

Thank you for any and all help!

    General/Home use laptop

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:33 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1200 I'm guessing on the high end. Australia but can use US amazon.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life isn't too important as I can plug it in often. I'm guessing 5-6 hours will do.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferably.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 14 inches.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not planning on any editing or CAD.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Hollow knight, league of legends, half life 2, amnesia, probably just small stuff. I'm fine with it going down to 720p and 30fps.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, reliable build quality, good screen and speakers. No need for touch-screen or finger-print reader. Don't think I need an optical drive. A fine touchpad would be nice but doesn't matter much as i can use a mouse.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was looking at the acer aspire e15 and the lenovo thinkpad t470, but they seem to be more than I need in terms of power and gaming, and the screens and speakers are supposed to be bad, and the acer is supposed to be unreliable, so I doubt I'll go for one of those.

CS Student, just built a PC so want something lighter weight

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:10 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    1600 USD, USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

A 2 in 1 would be cool but definitely a low priority. Out of those three battery life is the highest priority.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Extremely. I've been lugging around a laptop a little on the heftier side but I just built a desktop so I don't need the power anymore.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferably equal to or less than 14 inches. Weight is the most important factor, so if there is a better 15 inch option that's lightweight that is also an option.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do one Blender render everyday. This is the priority. Most of the time I can do this on my desktop, but I might be traveling, so this machine will ideally be able to render low poly Eevee (real time render engine in Blender) scenes. Not particularly demanding things.

Light Premiere Pro/Photoshop and even then, I wouldn't need to encode on this machine, just actual edit footage.

I will program on this but I'm a CS student and I know I don't need heavy specs for want I want to do with it.

If I play on this, I want to play Civ 5 and if possible, Halo Reach on low settings.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Halo Reach and Civ 5, I'm fine with low settings as long as I can get a consistently playable frame rate (~30 fps). As I said I don't need a hefty machine.

Looking for a laptop on a budget of £600.. Help plz!!

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:11 PM PST

Uh hi so I've been given 600 pounds to buy a laptop and I really don't know what is good at this price point. I'm not a tech genius by any means but I guess I would say I'm somewhat tech savvy but not quite enough to make an educated choice on what's best for my money.

Also I hope I've filled this out right apologies if not.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?:

I would like a fingerprint reader and/or a touch screen but I don't care about optical drive so long as there are 2 or more usb ports and other I/O.

Total budget and country of purchase:

I'm from the UK. My maximum budget is £600 but can possibly stretch to 650 for extra features if need be.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I wouldn't mind 2 in 1 but this would really be bottom of the list of things I want lol. Good battery life would be nice.. like maybe 6-8 hours if possible.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't care about weight but the thinner the better imo.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Anything except Mac. Personally not a huge fan of Apple products if I'm honest. I would prefer either Windows or Linux if possible.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferably something between 14 and 15.6. 13 is a bit too small for watching videos on and 17 is to big to be portable for my needs

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/ gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll be using it to multitask, Game & Run VOS in an attempt to learn cybersecurity and ethical hacking (soon see how that turns out lol)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I mostly play modded Minecraft but i wouldn't mind playing slightly more intensive games like Watch Dogs 2 and Skyrim or Fallout 4 if that's even possible on a laptop at this price range lol.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't know if laptops this cheap are even capable of running this stuff but that's why I'm here lol. I would like a decent looking laptop rather than a big bulky super gamer looking thing. I would prefer a dedicated graphics card to onboard graphics and a backlit keyboard would be nice too. Style and function are equally important to me (although function may have a slight edge).

Thanks for reading hope someone can help me out.

SUMMARY: • Under £650 • Between 14"-15.6" Screen • Touch Screen and/or Fingerprint Reader Preferable • 6-8 hour Battery • Light-Moderate Gaming & Multitasking • Decent Backlit Keyboard • Windows or Linux • At Least 8GB of RAM • At Least 512GB of Storage (SSD Preferable) • Dedicated GPU Preferable • Decent I/O • 1080p Screen Minimum • Thinner = Better

    THANKS!

    General Use Laptop

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 06:53 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    Around $1200 in the USA.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Good battery life (5-6 hours) over everything else. Decent specs are a plus since I know good specs and decent battery are kind of hard to ask at the price range.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Not really. As long as it can fit inside a decent sized bag, it'll be fine.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows, please.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I'd like to do some light gaming on it. Very light stuff like Halo and CSGO.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

1080P at 60Hz is fine, but 144hz would be very nice. Might be out of range for the price range though.

USA - $500 budget - Basic laptop for computer science student

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 06:07 PM PST

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I suppose a good keyboard is what I care about on this list. But I much rather have a good screen.

Total budget and country of purchase: $500 - USA (the lower the better but if a laptop is like $575 or something and it's super better than something less than $500...then I rather fork up the extra money.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't care for 2 in 1, don't really like tablets. Good battery life and best specs is what I care about.

How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm gonna say kind of important. It's not like I'll be running marathons with this laptop, mainly carrying it from my car to campus and in between classes/clubs etc. Realistically i'll probably spend a good 30-60 minutes everyday carrying it in my backpack.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Not a chrome OS omg please no.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not really, but I'm a 6 foot tall guy if that helps.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Only Microsoft Visual. It would be nice if it could run Adobe Premiere, but I can use my school desktops for that too.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Only game I play is Old School Runescape and I'm pretty sure YouTube takes more juice that that game.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will be programming in Java mainly, some C++ and some html, css. I primarily need this laptop to hide away in a corner in a quiet study area of the library away from people. I have a solid gaming PC at home and access to school desktops. I'm not really getting this laptop because "I need it" but for convenience. Sometimes the library gets too loud and I want to be mobile, or even go to a cafe and do work there. I won't be playing some AAA games or even close to that. Really just need it for things like web browsing, youtube, microsoft visual studio. It would be great if it can run Adobe Premiere. Like, I rather fork up an extra $100 or so for a better laptop if it's really that much better.

Looking for a laptop primarily for gaming and research/writing papers. Replacing my old Lenovo Y510p.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 05:56 PM PST

Hello! I'm moving on from my Lenovo Y510p, which has served me very well for the best 7 odd years. It requires some maintenance and is slowing down, and I think my best bet is to replace it. I'll use it mostly to game, and to write papers and projects whose contents I usually research myself. Not looking to break the bank, but I'll spend a few bucks on something with good value, perhaps sacrificing portability and battery life for performance.
    Thanks!

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -I don't particularly care for a touch screen or fingerprint reader. Just looking for something sturdy and reliable that won't break down-

Total budget and country of purchase: -Buying in Canada. Budget of 1000-2000 Canadian dollars-

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -I prefer best specs over battery life, but don't want something so abysmal it wouldn't last for a few hours study without charging-

How important is weight and thinness to you? -My current laptop carried me through my undergrad, and it's pretty bulky and heavy. So I'm used to it. Would prefer quality over portability-

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows-

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -Probably between 12-16'-

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -I play a wide variety of games. What I'm running now is World of Tanks, The Witcher 3 (this one runs rather poorly) and Gta5(also less than ideal running on this one). I'm looking for something that will be able to run modern games reliably, not necessarily at highest settings-

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -Nothing in particular comes to mind, but as I stated above, I'd like to be able to run modern games with reliable frames.-

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -When gaming, how the game looks takes second priority to how it runs for me. While working on documents and researching projects, I just want to be able to switch rather seamlessly from application to application-

    Lenovo Thinkpad X1 7th Gen

I've been looking at buying a new laptop and have noticed the deals going on Lenovo's website right now. I'm going to be using the laptop for graduate school work in a physical therapy program. I've come here to ask what specs most likely should I aim at getting? Like I said it would be for school but only really involve using powerpoint, word, and adobe for programs so nothing crazy intensive but I don't know if that may change as I get older since it would be my primary computer. I'm set on this computer because it's track record for lasting years and reliability factor. I have an old MBP from 2010 that I've taken really good care of and has lated me this whole time. I'm hoping to get the same out of the Lenovo based on what people are saying about it's reputation. If anyone has suggestions based on what the prices and specs are on their website at the moment: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-x/X1-Carbon-Gen-7/p/22TP2TXX17G
