    Simple Questions - December 31, 2019

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    I came, I lurked, I built.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 02:21 AM PST

When my wife complained about her slow laptop back in August, I had no idea what rabbit hole I would end up submerging myself in. Eager to show off my self professed technical prowess, I played around with a few things like start-up app tweaking, cleaning up harddrives and whatever else I could find online. The result was meagre at best. Some sites suggested swapping a harddrives with ssd's - could that be the solution? I never really did more than buy pre-built systems or in recent years gaming laptops. If there was an issue I'd simply carry it to the retailer or call support. That'll hardly impress the wife so I checked what YouTube had to say about laptop teardowns and had a go.

Long story short: in the 3 months (ish) since I've first taken a screwdriver to a computer I've gotten hooked and have completed two builds. It's been a heck of a journey and there's still tons to learn and experience but I'm psyched with having found 2 of my 4 true loves this year. Lurking here has given me ample pointers and ideas so sincerest thanks to everyone who contributes here!

Prefacing the specs: I built this system because I needed a win somewhere after a bit of a rough year. Prior to starting I did set a budget and then went on to ignore it completely. It ended up being a splurge beyond any notion of reason and I honestly have to say while I AM proud to call it my own, I do now realise that I (or most people) don't need this.

    My own rig: Joined the pc builder master race - Lian-Li 011d-xl, - Corsair RM850x, - Aorus x570 Master, - Ryzen R9 3900x (oc all core 4.375Ghz @1.32v), - Aorus RTX 2080Ti Xtreme WB (oc 2.04Ghz core & 14.4Ghz mem), - Trident Z Neo 16GBx2 (oc to 3800Mhz @16-16-16-36), - Aorus NVMe Gen4 2TB x2, - 970 Evo Plus 2TB, - WD Gold 6TB x2,

Custom soft tube watercooling loop: - phanteks glacier c350a cpu block - aorus rtx gpu block ("stock") - singularity Protium reservoir, - alphacool eiszapfen fittings, - bykski sensor, - mastercleer tubes (OD/ID is 13/10mm, or imperial: 3/8"-1/2") - 360mm primochill eximoSX slim radiator (top), - 360mm primochill eximoSX ultra radiator (bottom), - alpenföhn Wing Boost 3 High Speed 120mm fans x10 (side & bottom intake, rear & top exhaust)

Mods / peripherals: - cablemod modmesh PSU cables, white with white aluminium combs (not in love) - Silverstone es02-usb remote (not installed on this build yet but love it on the second system) - Logitech G560 speakers (nifty and not too pricey) - 27" 1440p Omen 27 display (overpriced garbed, highly advise against) - mouse & keyboard aren't done, my wife got my Logitech G703 Hero + Powerplay mouse mat & G915 keyboard for her HTPC I built and I'll probably get the Roccat Vulcan 122 AIMO keyboard & either Kone Pure Ultra or Kain 202 AIMO mouse to keep with the white theme.

Cooling/pasting: I've exchanged the stock thermal pads on the motherboard vrm on the gpu pcb with alphacool eisfläche pads (which was a pricey mod but they seem to do better than thermal grizzly minus 8 pads). For TIM I used either hydronaut or kryonaut on the gpu (I want to say hydronaut because kryonaut felt like a pain to spread but I'm not sure anymore) and conductonaut liquid metal between the ihs and cpu block.

Fans are running on normal via bios except PCH which I've set to performance since it bugs my autism that it tends to be hotter than everything else. Loop temps run at 26-27° at idle and plateaus at 32°ish in gaming. CPU runs at 50° with occasional spikes to 56°. GPU is in the 30ies. Negligible. With less of an overclock I could probably run it quiet.

Lighting: The lighting is still a bit of a pain since the cpu block uses 4pin 12v rgb while the fans are on 3pin 5v addressable. And because there's simply a ton of fans. I ended up going with a lamptron 10x splitter but the gigabyte fusion rgb app isn't letting me do a whole lot. Should be said that I haven't actually looked into whether the power delivery from the splitter would suffice.

Jimmy rigging an alpenföhn 3 fan-controller with SATA power onto the hub didn't seem to work. The front leds on the case aren't working either at the moment since I wanted to control it via the motherboard and did a shoddy job cutting the connector off of the control board in the case and attaching a 3pin with electrical tape. That's going to take some fixing and I'll need to look into one or two controllers I can use instead of the motherboard headers as they otherwise mess up the control of the aorus gpu waterblock and RAM.

I highly recommend others to check the motherboard manufacturer's compatibility info before choosing your components, if you want to sync everything via their software.

My next project involves learning more about electronics and coding so I can build an rgb controller using arduino. Which is a little frightening considering that in the summer of this year I still didn't even know what 80% of what I just said meant... :-)

OK wow that was a lot of text. I'll close by reiterating that none of this would have been possible without the wealth of information you guys have provided. It's very appreciated, even by those like me who don't usually jump into the conversation.

What ram speed should I get?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:27 PM PST

Newbie here, hopefully a simple question. Don't know if it has a massive impact on anything or not. I was planning on getting 3600mHz but could save a bit of money if I went lower to maybe 3200mHz.

Advice on dealing with children.. am I too hard?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 07:25 AM PST

    Ok this a weird post...

    Me (30) Kid (11)

So my brother in law is in town visiting and he has been playing lots of Fortnite on mobile. He got his xbox taken away a while back cause he did the classic rack up $700 in Vbucks on mommy's credit card...

After hanging out with the kid for a bit I figured hey if your not active and your gonna spend all day being on your phone might as well go all the way and go full geek.

Decided to give him my old gtx 970 and I started peicing together the parts. We got in a few hiccups with the cpu cooler and what not and it took 2 days to build it... technically like 5 hours total having to drill and make some mods...

The whole time the kid is just bratting out and expecting me to do everything. Everytime I look away and look at him he is rolling his eyes etc...

I called him out.... "listen man when I was your age I had nobody to help me build my first and it took me forever... and I did it when I was 8. Your 11 and you don't know how to download chrome cast... here's the computer I did most of the work for you now spend the rest of the night googling and YouTubing where the cables go... (I still did it for him and got it running)

Am I the asshole ?? I don't know how to deal with kids... am I expecting too much out of an 11 year old?

How do you guys handle this situation ?

What to look for in a boot drive?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:31 PM PST

    Hey yall,

I'm currently in the middle of building my new gaming rig. I have a R5 3600 and G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory. I'll probably end up going with one of the X570 boards, bit not sure yet. For the GPU, I'm shooting for the Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB NITRO+ Video Card.

I'm set on a m.2 NVMe SSD. My main questions regarding them though are:

    A) is it better to have one dedicated m.2 SSD for windows and a few ancillary programs? And have a secondary storage for games?

Or B) is it fine to have one large m.2 SSD for both windows and game storage?

Also I hear about DRAM and stuff like that, which is a bit confusing, and I don't see those specs in the SSD descriptions.

And if some of you fine people could point me in some good directions for recommended products, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Upgrading from a PC built in 2013

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 01:48 PM PST

Happy New Year! I am starting to have difficulty running programs and multiple things at once on my ancient computer. I built this thing back in 2013 and have been using it as is ever since. Here are the specs:

    Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

    Processor - AMD Athlon II X2 260 (2CPUs) 3.2ghz

Memory - 24gig - unsure of the type of ram.

AMD Radeon HD 6800 series - This is important. I have three monitors that I currently use in an array. I don't play any games stretched out over the three monitors, just use them for gaming and cruising internet.

    Power Supply 750 Watt

    HD - HItachi HDs721010dle630 ATA 1 TB

    MB - MSI 880GE45

Basically I want to know if I need to completely rebuild, or can I use some of that I have. I want an updated computer for under 1k if possible that will last me a while. Any ideas? I can try to provide more info if needed.

    Thanks!

How can I convince my dad to let me build my own PC?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:01 AM PST

I'm 16, and have saved up all year to build my own gaming PC.

My mum doesn't seem to mind, as long as I know what I'm doing, and the parts are from "credible" stores.

He has three main reasons why:

    1. It's too expensive/he wants me to save my money.

    2. He doesn't want me inside all day everyday

    3. He says that the PC will be worthless in 1-2 years and won't be able to do anything.

    4. I've been saving money all year to get enough for a PC by doing jobs for family members and stuff, and I have not made it a secret that I want a new computer (after my 5 year old HP laptop broke). So I find it hugely unfair that he waits until the day I want to buy the parts to say no. I understand that money is important, but I'm 16, and am likely going to get a job next year anyway.

    5. My dad has always had a problem with me and my older brother not "getting out and doing stuff". But by this, he seems to mean all. the. time. Like all day every day.

I've been skateboarding, but only by myself, and would be out for at least an hour every time, which would normally be every day (however it has been +35°C for a few weeks here, so I haven't been out that much). But even if I'm out for 3+ hours, he'll just be like "wow you've been out for an hour, go out again". So idk.

    1. I've honestly got no idea about this one. He says that the PC will be worthless after 1-2 years, and that I'll need to spend another $1000+ (AUD).

But when I say that they can last for 5+ years, he asks why I can't just buy "a 2 year old pc" for less money. I honestly don't know what he's trying to say with that.

I'm sorry if this is the complete wrong sub (pls point me to a better one if you know of one)

Thanks in advance for any help!

Noctua says on their FAQ that high temperatures are of no concern on Ryzen 3000 series chips, is there any truth to this?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 04:00 PM PST

    Their FAQ

Obviously Noctua wouldn't tell you that the high temps are due to their coolers not being up to the task, but is running at the temperature limit for extended periods of time really fine? My 3950x is sitting at around 50-65C when doing some light tasks like web browsing and apparently that is fine?

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes?

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming and office work. Mostly gaming and the occasional VPN into the office to check on servers, etc.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Anything is better than the i7-2600 with a radeon 7700 that I have now, right?

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

The closer to $1500, the better.

The computer I built in 2012-2013 is finally dead

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 03:12 PM PST

This was my first real rig, I had built a couple home computers before this one, not gaming computers. It had honestly been neglected for the past year or two, new hobbies and life and all. I have the original build complete post on here from almost 7 years ago. Also over the years it's received a 980ti, more RAM and swapped the mobo since the original died. The last iteration of this computer had it's original i7 3770k, gtx 980ti, 16gb kingston fury RAM, Intel mobo, 750w gold PSU, 120gb ssd and 500gb ssd storage.

Well it finally kicked the bucket, won't boot into anything. I suspect issues with the RAM, the 8 year old SSD from 2011, maybe even the motherboard.

New life has come out of this though. My wife's computer is still alive. She had a i3 4170, gtx 760, 8gb ram, 400W PSU, 120gb ssd and 1tb 7200rpm storage. I transferred the 980ti, power supply, 500gb samsung SSD and bought a i5 4960 for $50 on eBay. It will make a good replacement for when I eventually build again.

I feel like I've been out of the computer world for a while now, just now reading how AMD is competitive again. Don't really understand the naming conventions for GPUs. But I will learn again and rebuild.

(help) What would you build? intel vs amd - budget around $1000ish give or take

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:49 PM PST

    Intel - https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/gCrkDx

    AMD - https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/wG2dq3

So my last list i put up was missing some price info and sadly i cant go with the 2070 super lol i thought it was to good to be true,,, and it was :D (rip) anyway here's a couple builds i put together and would like some help deciding what to go with.

Mainly for cemu/yuzu emulator use which i think (by the youtube videos) sides more to optimize with intel but let me know your thoughts/changes what you would do.

    thanks.

    Keyboard price rant

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 02:47 AM PST

Are keyboard the only pc part where we get less for more money ?

In 2014, I bought the Razer Blackmirror 2014 for 80€. For this price I got :

    • mechanical keyboard
    • Macro keys
    • numpad
    • micro input
    • audio output
    • usb passthrough

Today, if I want to stick to razer and want the same specs, I have no option. I would have to switch brand (which is not a problem).

The entry level Razer mechanical keyboard costs 130€ and I won't get macro keys, nor audio/micro/usb port.

    Are we doomed ?

    H510 | P12 Vs F12

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:24 PM PST

I know that the Arctic F12 is good for airflow, and the P12 for static pressure and whatnot. But I'm not sure which case fans to get since the H510 has questionable airflow.

So which of those two fans are suitable for the NZXT H510?
