    Enable HDR on my laptop

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 11:44 AM PST

Hello, I want to enable HDR on my laptop, it has an Intel i5-8300H & Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti.

In the support page of the manufacturer (MSI) it says that in order to enable HDR I must have an i7 processor. I don't think an i5 can't handle HDR! Is there any way to bypass this? I seriously want to play Assassin's Creed or Tomb Raider the way they were meant to be played!

    Thank you.

Edit: I want to enable HDR on my external display, I already know my laptop's display is SDR.

Windows won't boot at all, what are my options for recovering the laptop?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 09:03 AM PST

Hi Guys, I've been searching for information on this for weeks now to no avail. Here is a quick rundown of my current situation:

    Windows 10, Lenovo z570

Windows will freeze when it tries to boot up normally (on the screen with the windows logo, the spinning dots will freeze and then stay on this screen indefinitely). This started happening months ago and occured due to a windows update (Unfortunately, because it's been so long since I managed to log in, I can't remember what update). I can't even boot up in safe mode, when I press F8 to get to the start up settings, the option 'enable safe mode' is there, but when I select it, it will continue to the windows logo and freeze. I have tried to boot/install ubuntu from my USB, but when I press any of the other F keys, it either proceeds to boot, proceeds to the start up settings (all of which don't do anything) or F10 will take me to the screen shown in the link below: https://i.imgur.com/SfORvrn.jpg

So my question is, are there any commands I can type at this screen to allow me to boot from my USB? Alternatively, if there is a way to just wipe the laptop and start from factory settings that would be ok too. I already have all the data off the HDD but I can't think of any options to salvage the unit since I can't log in to do anything.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I will provide more details if requested.

    Many thanks!

Connecting to Wi-Fi Deadlocks the System?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 08:55 AM PST

EDIT 0: Forgot the KDE/Linux Flair, not sure how to add it now. Sorry about that.

I'm using a nearly fresh install of Kubuntu 19.10 and whenever I connect to wifi using the system tray's connection manager, the system immediately deadlocks upon successful password entry.

Like deadlocks as in even ctrl + alt + insert + REISUB or ctrl + f2 doesn't even work given an unlimited amount of time.

Not sure how to deal with that or what to purge/reinstall. This happens with KDE wallet disabled.

Not sure how to handle this. Any support would be greatly appreciated as I have no idea what to do and I've posted on askubuntu and the post is pretty much dead.

    Thanks a million!

Computer turning on but not posting to monitor and mouse and keyboard not functioning

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 11:25 PM PST

I recently purchased all new parts for my PC, new motherboard, graphics card, processor, ram, and a new power supply. The problem is that when I start the PC the DRAM light comes on and nothing appears on my computer screen and there's no power going to my mouse and keyboard. I did manage to get the PC to start a few times by reseating the cables on the power supply, but it would shortly come up with a blue screen and the error saying my PC has encountered an issue. A fear I have is that the motherboard is defective. I did take it back to the store that sold me the motherboard and they did a bios flash to make my processor compatible. We brought it back, hooked everything back up and nothing. Again every so often it'll boot after reseating the cables on the power supply but will shortly get a blue screen of death with various errors, and then go back to not posting anything to the monitor. It's been a very stressful 2 days working on this so any help is appreciated. I have replaced the cmos battery and have only 1 stick of ram in the second slot closest to the CPU.

Here are all the new parts I purchased, and the motherboard has a high doa rate from what I read online

    Mobo: B450 Aorus pro wifi

    Graphics: Radeon RX 5700 XT

    RAM: Vengeance LPX 2x16 GB

    Processor: Ryzen 3rd Gen

    Power supply: Corsair CX650M 650watt

Can't open file after fresh Windows 10 install

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 05:03 AM PST

I freshly installed Windows 10 and on my secondary drive, I can't access certain files. I can't even open a text file there. It tells me I don't have the permission to do that.

I already went into the Properties -> Security -> Add "Everyone" to Groups and Users and give it full access.

Still won't let me do anything. In this list there is also an unknown account with lots of numbers in its name that I can't delete because it's superordinate to my current account?
