[December 2019] State of IT - What is hot, trends, jobs, locations.... Tell us what you're seeing! Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:17 AM PST Let's keep track of new trends we are seeing in IT. What technologies are folks seeing that are hot or soon to be hot? What skills are in high demand? Which job markets are hot? Are folks seeing a lot of jobs out there? Let's talk about all of that in this thread. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:22 AM PST Hello everyone, I recently started my OSCP labs and on the chance I pass I want to switch careers to a Penetration Tester. I've been looking at jobs and see that most require 2-5 years of Pen Test experience. My question is, how important is this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:24 AM PST Was wondering if there was a IT career roadmap showing different levels/categories of IT and how they each differ from one another. Wanted to use this tool as a way to finally solidify whether I'm in over my head in trying to work in this job field. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:15 PM PST I have only been working 3 months. They arent adequately staffed at my DC, so despite having "unlimited PTO", the boss gets pissed if you call out. Job I interviewed for today is for the state and pays 43 an hour. I have a good hunch they are going to send me the offer as they were asking when I can start. My boss told me one time he takes it personal when people leave for other jobs. This new job is a 15 minute commute, better benefits, double the pay, it's a no brainer. What's the best way for me to give my notice? If he makes the environment not tolerable do I leave before the 2 weeks? I have no problem finishing out the 2 weeks, but I feel like it's going to be awkward as I know how he is going to react. [link] [comments] |
Career and cert advice for a Help Desk tech Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:34 AM PST I'm currently working for the State government as a Help Desk Technican. I make just under $50k, and I have 4 years of work experience. Although I have a Bachelors in Information Systems, I don't have any certs under my belt at the moment. Networking was my original interest, but I recently became interested in Server and Cloud administration. I'm currently studying for MCSA: Server 2016. Is this a good career path to follow? If possible, I am open to receiving any career advice. [link] [comments] |
What problems do software developers solve in their job Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:08 AM PST I have heard that developers are people that problem-solve difficult coding tasks in their jobs. What would be a real-life example of a problem they would have to solve with code. I am looking for problems they would actually possibly need to solve in a real scenario not just some interview problem. I want to know an example of an actual problem that they might need to solve as I might want to be a developer. Also, I am just looking for an example or a problem that you developers had to solve in your job. thanks [link] [comments] |
No offers. Jobs nor Internships Posted: 17 Dec 2019 11:44 PM PST Background: Graduating from state college (IT Major) - 3.8 GPA CompTIA sec+ certified Job experience but minimally related to IT. I used the resume template found under "Top" posts in this subreddit but still not getting any bites. Is it possible this all resume related as I have applied to nearly 300 jobs (entry level/internships). If anyone can take a look at my resume or anything please let me know, feeling like I'm shitting the bed. Thanks in advance guys! Love this subreddit/community [link] [comments] |
Do smartphones have IP addresses? Posted: 18 Dec 2019 09:25 AM PST I was learning about IP addresses and how they link to your ISP and how they can give a general area of where you live! How do phone IP addresses work? [link] [comments] |
Computer information systems major or Information technology major? Posted: 18 Dec 2019 09:07 AM PST My local college I'm enrolled in only offers Computer Information Systems for a major, I'm wondering if this is just as good as a degree in Information Technology. I want to start out at help desk and eventually go on to do something with a networking position or cyber security. Are these degrees essentially the same or is one better than the other for the path I'm trying to pursue? Any help would be appreciated, [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:33 AM PST Short and sweet: Not my favorite part of the career path right now - 2 years in. Transferred from physical security and have A+N+S+ - This has been great, but I have hit my limit on calls and users. Can't do the "excel issue i've had for 6 months" within 10 minutes of my day at 7am. This is an example and yes, ideally i'd get to the root issue of that excel example and help the user for good, but this is an example. I do have an interest in security since I have the physical background and am intrigued by AWS and Linux. I do know that I have no interest in hardware and while I do enjoy networking concepts, no interest in cisco or working with R+S . What are some of the transitions seen here? MCSA for a jr admin role? What would someone in "cloud support" do? I live in one of the top 10 largest cities in the state so there's alot of work. Any feedback appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:27 AM PST Hi all, I've been in the IT game for 2 years now currently doing service side support and wearing many hats and touching a lot of tech, networking and systems in the school enterprise. I am fairly young so these decisions are quite tough. I've started to burn out working in the school system and I've been passively been searching for new opportunities. I've interviewed with a couple of orgs and these 2 position stands out the most. The first is a Corporate entity; great company great reviews fortune 100 best companies to work for as well as other awards. It is a 6 months contract to hire position. 60% phone support 40% service side. It seems like great growth opportunity and the pay is pretty good. 23/hr aka realistically 22/hr because of paid parking. My biggest concern is the contracting. The second position is a non-profit org. Great heart and great drive, They do a lot for the community and are extremely flexible. They are needing majjjjor help and I feel I could be a great asset for them. I will be a one man IT servicing about 180+ employees doing essential everything. This would be huge in growth but seems it can go south quickly since I am rather inexperienced. It would be 41k salary and it is full time! What do you all think?! [link] [comments] |
Looking to move from a Supervisor position into a Network Engineer position, any advice? Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:25 AM PST The newer and more trimmed down version of my resume is listed first, but the second one is a bit more verbose and covers more of what I have done in my current role. Any advice? Which form should I go with? Should I focus more on technical skills rather than what I've done as an acting manager / Supervisor? [link] [comments] |
Looking for a bit of advice for a newbie. Posted: 18 Dec 2019 08:01 AM PST Hi all. I have been lurking for awhile now and have been very grateful to everyone for all this great advice. I'm currently studying for my A+ and I was wondering if there is anything else I can do to help put some experience under my belt. I've been doing construction the last couple years and trying to make a switch. Just had a baby too so not much time to go back to school either. [link] [comments] |
Should I compromise on the future for a good salary? Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:35 AM PST Let me start off by saying that I have been unemployed for over a month and I'm getting desperate... (It's the longest time in my life that I didn't have a job). I used to work as a System Administrator on my previous job. I lost my job after the company went under and I have been unemployed ever since. I just got an offer which pays more but it will be a Help Desk position. I am so losing my mind without a job that I'm actually thinking about getting it. Am I crazy? Should I compromise on job experience (because this job will not grant me anything for that) and just get paid a good amount and be happy with that, or should I refuse and keep looking? So I want to start a network consulting firm in the future... Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:21 AM PST For those that are consultants or know a lot about this area, how do I get started? What do I need to know? Any advice/suggestions you could recommend? How did you go about getting new clients? [link] [comments] |
Update: Not sure how to handle new boss Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:14 AM PST This is an update to a previous post of mine. Many warned me to leave and find a new job, and that it would only get worse. How does it feel to be right? Long story short, I am the last employee standing. 3 left before I arrived, leaving only 2 other employees, one of which (let's call him employee A) will eventually be let go, despite being very valuable to the company in my opinion. Employee B (who has been here for many years) is now quitting. All the while, I have about 40 projects knocking at my door, possibly more. I really did not want to leave, as I have a history of switching jobs every year or 2, so I really wanted to change that habit with this job. It has only been a couple months but I honestly dread going to work. When I wake up on Saturday I am worrying about Monday. I also think the boss may be some sort of manipulative sociopath, but given the situation he is in, it is hard to tell. WHAT DO? [link] [comments] |
Professor Messer podcast on Android? Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:52 AM PST I couldn't find professor Messer study groups on Android. Does anyone know how to get them for Android? I have a pixel 3 [link] [comments] |

Google onsite interview in a month. Need help in time management Posted: 18 Dec 2019 02:46 AM PST Just today I received a call from Google to tell me that I have been selected for an on-site interview round at Google (Yay!). I am applying for a Graduate Software Engineer position (0 years experience). From what all I have heard, I will have to start solving Leetcode questions. Also, I was thinking of making one good project in my winter vacations and put it on my resume (Or does google not accept the updated resume? and uses the one that we had uploaded at the time of application? In the latter case I will not waste my time in working on a new project and instead focus on Data structures and Algorithms). Also, do people with 0 years experience get asked system design questions (I have heard mixed responses on this one). With that being said, How can I schedule my preparation time table for my next month? I see there are approximately 1300 questions on Leetcode as of the time I am writing this question and hence I am a bit overwhelmed by the amount of study that I would need to do for Data structures and Algorithms and System design in next one month. Please suggest some ways to prepare in one month. Also, any tips for an on-site coding interview at Google will be helpful :) Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Salary Research: Glassdoor vs Paysa vs Indeed Posted: 17 Dec 2019 08:32 PM PST Which site is the most accurate? Paysa shows the highest averages and I've read that it's the most accurate due to having more recent data. Paysa is about 20% higher than Glassdoor for my occupation (Business Analyst). What are your experiences? [link] [comments] |
Advice on Switching Roles from Network Engineer to Network Developer Posted: 17 Dec 2019 06:01 PM PST Hey guys, As the title says, I'm looking for some advice on getting into the field of developing SD-WAN products. I am currently a network engineer and work closely with Cisco's NSO (mentioning this because I think it's relevant). A little bit about me:
Long story short, I wanted to become a network engineer and got a job as one, but ended up on a team that automates networking. Now, I'm finding myself wanting to develop these network automation tools, SD-WAN in particular, instead of working with them. The problem is, I'm finding myself getting lost in all the technologies that I should be studying. I've also found very little advice online, probably because SDN isn't really a path new grads often take. I just need some focus so that I don't throw away my energy studying a topic that will be useless to me in the technical interview/job. Things I've tried/considered studying:
note: My company is paying for all the Red Hat and Cisco certification learning modules/exams so that's why my personal studies have a bias towards those topics. I just need a focus. My brain is all over the place. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
