Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:09 AM PST Hello, I'm a newb when it comes to domains to start off. How would I use a domain in my home network? For example, if I had a server with multiple services that I'd need to access from a web browser from a desktop on my LAN, how could I differentiate between the services. Not sure I'm wording that right, I mean like if I want to access myplexserver.mydomain.net or nagiosserver.mydomain.net ? Where would I declare the domain name, would I need LDAP or AD to do this? Edit: thanks everyone. I am gonna read all the comments when I get home from work. Didn't think I'd get so many responses. Thanks again! [link] [comments] |
Planning on running cat5e outside Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:36 PM PST Hi I am planning on running Ethernet cable outside and into my room on the other side of the house it will be ran along a wall will I encounter any problems using normal cat 5 or will it be ok ? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Network speeds reduced drastically after adding powerline equipment. Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:05 PM PST Had a cable modem (from the ISP) and a wifi router (Netgear). Speeds were outstanding (400 up, 20 down). Both devices, however, lived in the basement. Wifi signals to the upstairs clients were weak. Decided to purchase a Netgear powerline (PLP2000) kit. My thought was I could move the wifi router upstairs (for better wifi broadcast) and connect it to the cable modem downstairs via powerline. Checked around on the interwebs and the connection was legit. Cable modem -> PLP2000 -> house electrical wiring -> PLP2000 -> Wifi Router. Connection is solid - but the speed is abysmal. Instead of 400u/20d (with dslreports speedtest), it's now 50u/9d. Question is: Is powerline really this bad? Netgear advertises speeds 'up to' 2000 mbps. I understand advertised speed versus actual throughput, but adding powerline to my network really made me question my purchase. I don't have the powerline devices plugged into power strips or surge protectors and the house was built in the '70s. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Powerline reported speeds vs internet speed question Posted: 10 Dec 2019 07:45 PM PST I have a TP-Link AC1200 Wi-Fi Range Extender, AV1200 Powerline Edition (TL-WPA8630 KIT). The program TP-Link PCL Utility shows between the two powerline devices as having a 329 Mbps connection. My router, the Netgear Nighthawk X4S R7800 shows a total bandwidth speed of 298.33 Mbps down and 23.86 Mbps up for my ISP. Running a speedtest.net with nothing else connected to my router except this computer gives me 33.26 Mbps down and 23.77 Mbps up. I know Powerline devices aren't ideal, but I feel that my internet download speed vs the powerline utility speed should be much closer to each other instead of 10%. The upload matches what my router shows I can do. Any thoughts? EDIT: I ran another speedtest and got the fastest result of the day. 75.38 Mbps down and 24.00 Mbps up. Better, but not the best. Trouble reaching gateway from behind new router (different subnets) Posted: 10 Dec 2019 07:40 PM PST I had to replace my router (WAN port died), and I'm having trouble configuring the new one to work with my network. My network sits behind an AT&T gateway with IP passthrough enabled to my router. I used to be able to reach the gateway from a computer on my router's LAN by just typing in its IP address. After I made the switch, though, I can only reach my router, not the gateway. The connection times out. I can get to the internet just fine; I just can't get to the gateway. I'm pretty sure I had a setting on my old router that I haven't put into the new one. The gateway and the router are in different subnets: my gateway is on 192.168.1.XXX, and my router (on the LAN side) is on 192.168.2.XXX. My LAN's subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. My router is an Archer C7 running stock firmware. Could someone please help me remember what I am missing? [link] [comments] |
Actiontec Moca Adapter with splitter to two TVs Posted: 10 Dec 2019 07:31 PM PST I'm kind of new to Moca technology so bare with me as I try to explain my situation. I have Comcast internet and cable. I have a modem in bridge mode hooked up to an Asus router upstairs. My first moca adapter is plugged into a coax jack upstairs and wired into the Asus router. My second adapter is downstairs, also hooked up to a coax jack and then wired to my Xbox console. This works flawlessly. However, when I plug in a coax to the TV/STB jack with a splitter and then into two cable boxes, the moca adapter blinks and the signal is heavily degraded and intermittent. The splitter is MOCA compliant. When I called Actiontec, the tech had a hard time understanding me but he told me that it is not recommended to have a splitter hooked up to the adapter in the remote room. Is this true? I was under the impression that this would work just fine. If not, how can I hook up the two TVs along with the Xbox in the remote room? Thanks in advance for your patience. [link] [comments] |
Not getting Gigabit speeds from my ISP Posted: 10 Dec 2019 06:25 PM PST My family recently upgraded to Gigabit internet, and we are not getting anywhere close to the advertised speeds. My PC gets 92.8 Mbps down and 10.2 Mbps up (I have a wired connection). Those results were taken from the Google speed test, and they are obviously a far cry from gigabit internet speeds. So what's the deal? Is there anything I can do to fix it? We have already gotten a new modem, tried power cycling, etc. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 05:52 PM PST Hello everyone! New here. I recently upgraded to 1G internet from 100/100. The issue I am having is that I am not seeing it when performing speed test. The test is being performed on both speed test.net and Frontier's own speed test on their website. The field tech who did the install couldn't figure it out. Their phone support can't help. Spoke to 3 different help desk personnel and no one was able to help. All seemed to be reading from a script since they all asked the same questions and told me to do the same thing the field tech had already tried. All of them refused to listen to my suggestion. My suggestion was that it could be the modem because when the field tech came out and did the install, he replaced everything; cables and router but utilized the old 10 year old modem which was used for my old 100/100 connection. They all tested my connection remotely on their end that I am getting 900/900 but I am not. I am getting 500/900, but they refuse to listen. I've rebooted the modem and router multiple times. The field tech and myself bypassed the router and connected my computer directly to the modem and still was only getting 500/900. My computer is a new build; Intel i5 9600k with a MSI z390 pro Mobo. All drivers and firmware have been updated. I have 3 other computers in the house and all are seeing 500/900. All have brand new CAT6 cables. The only thing I can think of is that there is a configuration issue on the router's backend or the modem is bad. I need all of your expertises advice. I've tried everything and I am out of ideas. Posted: 10 Dec 2019 05:45 PM PST I normally deal in enterprise gear and haven't had to shop this stuff for awhile. My parents had an Airport Extreme setup that decided to give up the ghost. I'd like to replace with something solid that requires minimal maintenance. If I can VPN or cloud control to it that would be ideal but it's not required. They're currently on a solid but slow internet connection (something around a 10/2) so throughput isn't hugely important at the moment but I assume somewhere in this thing's useful life they might bump up. The house is wired with ethernet patched into a very nice little wall mount rack and switch their awesome son put in during construction. I was thinking Ubiquiti but there are a ton of options. I should be able to get more than sufficient coverage with a base router and 2 AP's. I'll be doing all of the management so I very much want a set it and forget it solution to the extent that's reasonably possible. Budget is $300-$500, but I care a lot less about price than I do about not having to go over and work on it all the time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:59 AM PST Hi all, I am wanting to separate some wired devices to be connected to the internet over a VPN while leaving some not on a VPN. I believe this can be done over WiFi using Tomato where you have two different SSIDs one with and one with out a VPN. How would be best to do this when looking at wired devices? Would using VLANs help to separate my traffic but how would I VPN it from there? I currently have no network setup other than the isp router but am looking to get everything setup soon. So any recommended hardware would be great! Thanks [link] [comments] |
Speeding up download speed 2.4GHz Century Link Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:29 PM PST Hey would buying any hardware such as a router will boost the download speed in the wifi network , I'd like to stay with 2.4 because my security cameras are rated for that type of frequency. [link] [comments] |
External Antenna outside metal shop close to house. Internal repeater. Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:22 PM PST Hello All! I've been doing quite a bit of research, but I'm just not sure the best way to accomplish this. Here is the setup: My father has a shop that's within 20-30 feet of the house. However it is entirely clad in metal siding and as such gets zero wifi reception. He uses a laptop in there, and doesn't need a lot of speed or anything. His current method is a USB antenna plugged directly into the shop, but it would be helpful for him to move about. What I'm looking for is a way to get an Antenna on the outside of the building, but have the wifi actually repeat inside the building. I've looked at a lot of Ubiquity's products, but they're probably overkill. I'm also not for sure how it works, it seems it would just pick up the signal and repeat outside the shop? I have several old routers that I can flash DD-WRT on, but can I just use an antenna extension cable to mount some antennas on the outside? Thanks for any and all help! [link] [comments] |
Nighthawk R8000 Not Hitting 1GB Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:58 PM PST Hi everyone, Sorry if this has been asked here a billion times -- nothing I've found posted before was exactly relevant to my situation. Recently switched to fiber internet this past summer on a 500mb/s up/down plan and purchased a Netgear Nighthawk R8000 router. At first, over wifi I was reaching roughly 350-400. Since then, it steadily declined to around 250-300. I decided, hey, I might as well upgrade my service to 1 gig. After upgrading, my wifi speeds sat exactly the same as they were before. I then connected my computer directly to my router -- same speeds. I then connected my computer directly to my modem and I was hitting roughly 900 up/down. After an hour and 30 minute convo with Netgear's customer support, they pretty much ran me in circles just to tell me I need to purchase their 'extended support', so no help there. Does anyone know how to fix this sort of issue? Is this a hardware issue? A computer issue? A settings issue? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 02:11 PM PST Hello, I have a home network setup where IPTV is distributed through ethernet cable connection with home modem/router and then it can be played in VLC with m3u playlist like ;: #EXTINF:0,1 - TV udp://@xxx.x.x.x:xxxx Now this works on Windows10 unless PC is behind VPN. Now I want to replicate the same setup within Linux and the thing is that when I open a m3u playlist nothing happens. I am noob in networking, but I have spend a lot of time last few days studying Linux Networking, Ifconfig, wireshark, nmap, ufw, allowing ports, netstat, setting up an ethernet connection, etc. Can anyone give me any idea ? I am posting this here because I think it is not a linux issue but network issue, yet I even might be wrong about this. Is there a way to test isolate the issue ? I was able to capture ethernet packages with wireshark but I don't understand what is going on. [link] [comments] |
350 max with Xfinity Extreme Pro Internet Download speeds up to 600 Mbps Posted: 10 Dec 2019 02:10 PM PST Good afternoon all- I have been experiencing a slowdown with my internet lately so I had an Xfinity tech out on Saturday to diagnose the issue. The technician couldn't initially find any issues, but he was also getting 350 mbps max hardwired to router, after replacing all cabling, connections, and terminals, he re-provisioned the modem, at which point we hardwired my computer direct to modem and bypassed router and consistently got 875 down 24 up. We reconnected modem to router and it was back to the 350 down speeds. Upstream is consistently 24 wired/wireless. Modem is a NetGear CM1000 and router is NetGear R8000. Everything is connected with cat7/8. What next. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Xposted to r/Comcast_Xfinity [link] [comments] |
Archer C5 v4: Wired internet speed is being throttled only when using the router Posted: 10 Dec 2019 05:48 AM PST Hey, folks My current setup has a router (Archer C5 v4) in my room connected to the modem/router from the ISP in a more central location of my home. If I connect the modem directly to my PC, I can get close to the contracted 70Mbps speeds on Speedtest, but if get the router in between, it drops to 10Mbps. Different cables get me the same results. I have tried both using the ISP's provided DNS addresses and Google's, to no avail. There is no obvious QoS settings to turn off, though I did find a "bandwidth control" setting, which I have tried both turning off and tweaking to speeds close to and above 70Mbps. There is also no firmware upgrades on the brazilian support page, but there is one in the Russian page. The settings page's installer does not accept that binary, though. I have briefly looked into OpenWRT and DD-WRT, but it's almost as if this particular revision of the Archer C5 is non-existent worldwide, so I'm uncomfortable risking flashing those over with uncertain compatibility. The throttling also happens with a second router we use in the house, though I haven't tested it as much as the Archer, as I don't have access to its settings. If it makes any difference, I remember getting 30Mbps once or twice when I first installed it. EDIT for future reference: Read in local forums that my ISP's modem might be the culprit. Will try to use the modem itself in bridge mode later to see if it solves it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:04 PM PST On my home network, I have one router (192.168.0.1), and two other old wireless routers that have been configured as access points (192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3). Two of these are accessible by IP address for the purpose of accessing using the browser-based configuration service. But trying to access the third (192.168.0.3) doesn't work. The request just times-out. I used tracert to see where information might be going, and it I got the following:
Everything about the network works just fine (stuff connecting the the third access point can talk to everything else on the network with no problem), except the ability to access the web config page for the 192.168.0.3 access point. It's more of a curiosity rather than a problem. But does anyone know what's happening? [link] [comments] |
Do wifirouters have lithium batteries inside? Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:00 PM PST So my old TPLINK wifi router WR940N is "allegedly" not working properly (im suspecting ethernet cable pluggin/repluggin from a family member) but since this is a 10year old wifi then is it possible that it uses and internal battery source? I want to remove any other possible scenario.... thnks. [link] [comments] |
Trying to set up a Router -> Switch -> AP and Switch -> Ethernet connection, breaks my internet Posted: 10 Dec 2019 12:22 PM PST Hi, I am trying setting up a wireless network across my house. I have a wireless router that is the main network driver, connected to that I have a simple 5 port unmanaged switch. From the switch I have a second wireless router set up as an access point (works perfectly fine, same SSID and password all set up well), the problem comes as soon as I plug in an ethernet cable into the switch and into my smart tv. The internet in my house shuts down, when I unplug the cable it works fine again, this is a working cable and a direct connection from the router works perfectly fine. I have read that you cannot send ethernet out of a router acting as an access point and though that the switch would help bypass it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 12:20 PM PST Hey, so I have a NAS at my parent's house. I have set it up to where I can sftp to it just fine without problems. However, I am tired of having to memorize the IP. I was wanting to get a free domain somewhere and use that instead. I have tried awardspace but I seem to be confused a little. To be fair I don't have much experience working with domains. I have little to no money so purchasing a domain/plan isn't something I can do right now, but I can do it later.... any help would be great! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:44 AM PST I happen to have a backup router of the exact make and model, if I set up that router along sinde my current one, would I be able to double my DHCP reservations? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:43 AM PST Hey guys, dunno if this is the correct sub for this but I recently switched ISP's because my old one is becoming unreliable (router/modem combo randomly restarting / having infrastructure issues). The new one apparently works over fiber optics with 200mb up+down which suite my needs way better than old ISP, from what i've dug around for a bit was GPON, no idea what that is and i'd appreciate more explanations if possible. Anyways, I'm a software engineer (freelance mostly), and a rookie r/DataHoarder , so I want/need to host some servers off my VM's from home + a shared Plex library. But I ran into an issue with Double-NAT which I have no idea how to solve, and therefore most of my servers arent reachable, so any help is appreciated ! EDIT: I'm sorry for not providing the exact equipment. I've been given a router+modem combo, ZTE F660. I have tried portforwarding my needed ports for the servers but the servers still arent visible outside the local network. [link] [comments] |
Looking to buy a new router, thinking ASUS RT AC86U or Eero 3-pack. Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:59 AM PST We just got faster wifi in our home but now have to upgrade our router. According to Spectrum, we will be getting 400 MBPS speeds. I'm looking at two routers right now, the ASUS RT AC86U and the Eero 3-pack on Amazon. I live in a 2200 sq. foot home, but my old router had a few problems reaching some of the corners of the house (we'd get connection, but it would be slow and frequently drop). The ASUS certainly looks faster, listing at 750Mbps on 2.4Ghz and 2167 on 5Ghz... but if the internet is only going to be 400Mbps, wouldn't any additional speed be bottlenecked anyway? The Eero only looks to have 240Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and up to 600Mbps on 5GHz but I might want to go that way for the extra coverage, stability, and control (we have kids who frequently need the internet shut off and monitored remotely). Which would you all recommend? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:20 AM PST I bought this switch a few years ago and it's been great but recently one of the ports went dead? I tested all of them but so far just one port is out.
