Fiber lines inside my house - how do I know where they go?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 06:08 PM PST

I purchased my home earlier this year and noticed that there are some fiber lines in the basement in the utility room. They say the following on them:

    E96418 simplex fiber optic cable 1-62 5/125

Any idea what they could be for? My first thought is that it would be for internet connection, but those usually terminate on the exterior of the home (to my knowledge) and there isn't so many of them and my home isn't eligible for fiber as of right now.

Any assistance would help! (Yes, I know the cable management sucks in the photo and it's on my to do list).

Update: my bad - here's the photo:

    New home

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 10:07 AM PST

Just purchased a home that has 3 bedroom, and a full basement. I have two computers that I use for gaming, 3d modeling, Photoshop. A tv I use to stream and a couple of game consoles. The area I'm in I'll have gigabit fiber internet. I'm wondering if it's worth running cat6 cables throughout the house or if it's going to make much of a difference.

Strange looping broadcast packet show up in router

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:44 PM PST

I have a router connected to my ISP router which is set in bridge mode. tcpdump on the eth0 port which the bridge is connected to, shows some weird looping text broadcasts from an unknown MAC address, for example:

    23:05:28.753264 00:00:00:00:00:12 (oui Ethernet) > Broadcast, ethertype Unknown (0xfffa), length 72:

    0x0000: 0000 0003 f86c e18c 38a0 5468 6520 6461 .....l..8.The.da

    0x0010: 7920 4920 6c6f 7374 206d 7920 7665 7279 y.I.lost.my.very

    0x0020: 2066 6972 7374 2074 6f6f 7468 2c00 0000 .first.tooth,...

    0x0030: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 ..........

The content of the packets seem to be a poetry written by Erin Hanson, each packet contains a small piece of it, and the next one is sent roughly 5s later. And it keeps looping this one poetry non-stop.

show arp on my router does not show a device with the MAC address of 00:00:00:00:00:12, and what does the 00:00:00:00:00:12 > Broadcast mean? Is my router the one sending it or receiving it?

    Double NAT, NAS, Plex

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 02:59 PM PST

    Hello,

Recently I got my first NAS, a Synology DS918+. I set up a couple of things including Plex. However, I do have a double NAT. This is the structure of my network: https://imgur.com/a/lJukoxQ

I struggle to find out how to configure Google Wifi and my ISPs modem/router, so I can use Plex without any issues on my phones outside of the network.

    Would appreciate some help.

    Thanks in advice.

    Ethernet jacks for Security Cameras

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:07 PM PST

What thoughts do you all have about the location of Ethernet jacks for PoE security cameras? Should they go as close to the camera as possible, even if that's 6 feet up the wall? Or should I keep them at normal outlet height? Or should they just be terminated in the wall and not put on a plate at all?

I'm trying to plan for a new house, and I want to get this right the first time. Thanks for your insight!

Currently have a Powerline setup, want to switch to MoCA but have questions

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:02 PM PST

I am currently using a TP-Link TL-WPA8730 kit with one additional adapter. I have 1 Gig internet and my speed test numbers are very low, the internet is constantly dropping and the wireless signal is still bad. Part of the issue is my router is in the basement of a 3 story house and I have 3 different circuit panels and another panel for a whole home generator so I am not surprised with my results. I want to switch to MoCAbut am unsure what I need to get everything I am looking for out of my network.

My goal is to have decent wireless in the house, have ethernet plugged into my main tv and xbox one that are in my living room, and in my home office be able to plug ethernet into my computer, printer, and network storage (my cloud). There are coax connections in both rooms, right near where the devices I just listed are.

    What I have.

    - Verizon Fios 1gig internet and tv service.

    - A cable comes from outside and goes into a black verizon box P/N:3MV00470AA, this plugs into an electrical outlet. That's the only connection. I believe this is power for the box outside maybe.

    - Cat 5e comes from outside and plugs into Verizon Router Fios-G1100. Coax from a wall connects to the router as well. The LAN light is lit on router.

    - From the wall near where the outside connections are 2 cables that come out of the wall. One goes to the input side of a Verizon MoCA 2.0 6-way splitter PDI-6WWB-2.0. The other cable goes to one of the output connections.

    - There is one additional splitter that I know of for the basement cable connections. It's 1 input, 2 out. It's a Regal ZDS2DGH10 part number.

What all do I need to get to have a MoCA setup with wireless throughout the house, and the two rooms I want to have the devices plugged into ethernet. Thanks for the help.

Moca coax light not turning on, troubleshooting help

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 08:46 AM PST

When I connect the Actiontec MOCA 2.0 adapters (ECB6200) together the coax indicator lights up.

I have Comcast internet with XB6.

Doesn't light up when I enable Moca on the cable modem and try an Actiontec adapter at any coax in the house.

Doesn't light up when I attach a Moca cable in parallel with the cable modem using the 2 way splitter.

Does it have anything to do with the 3 way splitter on the outside of the house being rated for only 5-1002 Mhz?

VLAN VPN NVR Configuration and Questions

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 01:33 PM PST

    Hi

I would like to segregate my surveillance NVR (Dahua) from being able to access my local network. I don't know if it should have access to the internet (I'll leave that up to yourselves to help me decide) but I know I don't want it to be able to access my other devices.

I've looked into VLANs and from what I've read, this is the way that I should go. However, my networking knowledge is a little basic.

I've also read that it'll be possible to access the surveillance cameras remotely by using a VPN.

    I have access to the following routers/modems: * Netgear AC1600 D6400 (latest Netgear firmware) * Asus RT-AC1900P (latest Merlin firmware - RT-AC68U)

The Netgear has an interface for VLANs and a VPN, although the documentation says that the VPN is not accessible through Mobile devices (Android in my case).

The Asus has VPN (without the mobile restriction) but I can't see anything to do with VLANs except for IPTV.

So my questions are: 1. Which one of the two routers should I use? 2. How should I configure the chosen router to allow me to segregate the network? 3. How should I configure the chosen router to allow me remote access into it so that I can view my local network, connect to the internet, and view the NVR? 4. If the NVR has access to the internet (in the above configuration) that should allow me to use the Dahua app. However, if I completely block internet access then what software would I need on my phone to be able to view what's going on?

    Hopefully the above makes sense.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I'm at a loss as to how to go about configuring the above.

Network slow and frequently drops on wired and wifi connections

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 04:13 PM PST

For months I have noticed my wifi connection is slow and I have huge lag spikes when playing online games or streaming.

I have Xfinity internet to the home with 50mbs down and 5 mbs up. My cable modem feeds into a Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 (model R6700v2). The network is used for the usual streaming netflix/online gaming.

Yesterday thanks were particularly annoying so I began troubleshooting the problem and visited a number of sites for advice (including great help articles on this reddit)! I started by upgrading the firmware, disabling QoS, and switched wifi channels for both the 2.4 and 5ghz to less crowded channels. All this made NO change and several different speed tests gave me between 3-15 Mbs down and upload was always 5. What was strange was that the down had very high variance...I ran 3 speed tests each multiple times on multiple machines with different physical positions and the result was all over the place but never better than 15 mbs down.

I decided I would at least isolate the problem to the wifi and plugged a physical wired connection into the router and again down speeds no better than 15 mbs (but often 3 mbs). That really surprised me so I completely removed the router and plugged my PC directly to the cable modem. In this setting, I never got less than 80 mbs down and 5 mbs up. So definitely something going on with my router! I tried factory resetting it. didn't help, a firmware update didn't help, again disabling QoS and changing the channel. Even changed the ethernet cables just in case. Nothing helped. Even the wired connections are slow through the router!

If any of your home networking gurus could shed some light that would be amazing.

    I need recommendations

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 06:24 PM PST

I have a 5400 sqft house and a Xbox and a Gaming pc that are both used at the same time regularly upstairs from the router. The ISP provided router just wont work the signal coming to the house is a measly 30 Mb/s and up by the console and the pc it is around 20 dipping down to single digits. I am not great at networking and could use some advice. Thanks in advance

Looking at new routers, trying to decide between R7800 and rt2600ac

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 06:04 PM PST

Current router is an Asus AC87U with Merlin firmware. Not the best router due to some crap internal design as I've read, but it served me fairly well.

I've been looking into what I could go for an upgrade and there seems to be three main choices: AC86U, R7800, and the rt2600ac.

For the AC86U it seems to be a matter mostly of needing the hardware for VPN, of which I do not. Familiarity with Merlin would also be a bonus, but it honestly isn't that big a deal.

Next up is the R7800. Seems to have some of the best wireless range in its class and an all around decent pick, especially if you go with openwrt. A big bonus here is the whole integrated SQM for bufferbloat.

That brings me to the rt2600ac. Same hardware as the r7800, just under the Synology hood. As I'm familiar with Synology NAS products I'd have no problems switching from merlin over to this if need be.

One concern I do have is the 2600ac doesn't have any proper SQM and Synology has yet to add it into the firmware for whatever reason, and this was a concern - I tested my bufferbloat a few months back and got crap results (a C or D if I recall correctly). However, this post seems to have a viable workaround for solving bufferbloat issues within SRM anyway?

The caveat with all of this is that I realise Merlin has some form of SQM with fq_codel within his firmware and unless it doesn't work properly on the AC87U or something, when I had turned it on and adjusted my dl/ul values I could never improve my bufferbloat results, which would point to an ISP issue, correct? I'm on BT, which did admit mid last year that they had confirmed issues on their backend regarding gaming pings that had been ongoing for a long time (and ignored), so it is possible that it still isn't fixed and this is the reason. Unfortunately, I'm stuck on a contract with them until August, so I can't exactly switch ISP to confirm that yet.

I should probably note at the end of this ramble of thoughts that I don't have any real specific uses: I've got a fair amount of WiFi connected smart devices (but overall fewer than 30), I have some wired connections for my NAS and main gaming PC.

Having gone through all that, any advice that I may have missed out on to help me decide?

(I have considered Ubiquiti but I dismissed it after reading about the teething problems of its own especially on the lower end hardware that's often recommended and I doubt the additional complexity would be worth it for my fairly simple usages).

Did I make a mistake in purchasing my router?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:55 PM PST

So I just purchased the CM1150V for my Xfinity Triple Play package to eliminate the $13 rental fee. At the same time, I got an R7000 for my 1500 sq ft home.

When reading online about the R7000, you guys seem to not like the R7000 at all. I have 13 days left to return the R7000 so I'm going to you guys to recommend me something.

There are only two ethernet ports needed: one to my desktop and one to my solar panels (I have no idea why that is needed but the installers plugged it in so I haven't touched it since).

I value reliability because the reason why my mom purchased the router and modem combo is to fix her issue of her smart TV randomly disconnecting from YouTube. I wanted a quick remedy by getting an AP that is stronger than the one provided by Xfinity. Should I return the router and purchase something else?

TL;DR my setup is a modem and a router/AP combo. Mom will move out of house in 2 years from a 1500 sq ft house to a 800sq ft condo. Currently only need two ethernet ports. Is my R7000 a good device or should I return and buy something else?

Using TP-Link Archer C7 v5 as AP and for vlan tagging

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:36 PM PST

tldr; Do I need to care about the TP-Link Archer C7's relatively weak CPU if I am just using it as a wireless access point for a home and to apply VLAN tags to two devices connected directly to it?

full; I converted a TP-Link Archer C7 v5 into a dumb AP running Openwrt per this guide, connected to the router via a LAN port rather than the WAN port. Because of where the C7 is located, I also have two devices plugged directly into two of the other LAN ports, each of which gets tagged with a different VLAN vid. The C7 also broadcasts 3 SSIDs (2.4 GHz, 5GHz, and guest), with the guest wifi getting VLAN tagging, as well. One of the directly connected LAN devices streams 4K video, and there are about 10 wifi clients (phones, IoT, printer, etc.)

Even though the C7 shouldn't be doing any NAT, firewall, DHCP, etc. on this setup, I'm wondering if the VLAN tagging puts any appreciable strain on the CPU. Do I need to care about the CPU at all for a dumb AP? Do I put any additional strain on the C7 by using it as a makeshift switch?

EdgeRouter + Netgear Router as AP for Guest Wireless in home

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:23 PM PST

I have the EdgeRouter X connected to a Netgear R6700v2 for wireless. Since the ERX is not connected to the WAN port on the NG I am unable to configure the NG for Guest Network. Can I configure the port on the ERX so that the NG will work on the WAN port?

For the sake of clarity in its current state I can enable the guest network but there is no internet until I enable "Allow guests to see each other and access my local network" which defeats the purpose of an isolated network.

Is what I'm trying to do possible with the equipment I have? If not what suggestions do you have to resolve this?

    750mbps, NAS, streaming and wifi

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 06:58 PM PST

Hey everyone! I just moved to a laneway house (famous in Vancouver, BC where a garage is converted to a mini-house) and I got 750mbps up and down from Telus Fibre.

Currently I have a Telus HUB and a AirPort Extreme. The house is about 750sq feet and 2 floors where my bedroom is upstairs, I was getting low speeds upstairs so I decided to use the Telus HUB as main router/wifi downstairs and use the Aiport extreme upstairs as a extender on bridge, which both are connected via Ethernet where the house every room has a CAT5 port. I connected the ports of every room together with a 1gig switch under the stairs and I also just installed a NAS wired on the switch. It looks neat and organized.

The issue I'm having is that when going upstairs or vice versa sometimes my devices stays connected on the furthest AP.

I work with IT and use Unifi at work but I'm skeptic to install unifi at home + budget of $150-$200 where here in Canada Amplifi is a bit more expensive.

I do have an iPhone 11 Pro which supports wifi 6 but don't care much, my TV and PC is connected wired for better performance and have google home + iPad and not many iot devices.

I was thinking either getting a AC87U or a TP-Link AX3000 (future proof) but not sure if I should, cause I would also like to have an AP upstairs wired as a extender. I do use VPN but never used Open VPN as I connected each device stand alone for VPN so I wouldn't miss not having open VPN but wouldn't mind having it either.

Any recommendations on a good setup?

    • also even with a good internet connection I'm having a hard time getting good speeds or even being able to connect to my NAS when out of home. I'm away now so didn't had time to test or change settings but the port my Seagate for MYNAS is using is 8080 so not sure if Telus block this port.

    Intermittent network/internet connection.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 05:21 PM PST

So I have a home shop that is separate from my house. Both were built this year and during building were wired with cat 6. Only two active wires into the shop, one to a wall plate that has an old desktop running Ubuntu 18.04, and one to a Wifi access point. Wifi is working with no issues as are various wired connections in the house. The shop desktop worked fine when initially connected, to the network, but internet access has recently become only intermittent.

Wire terminates at a patch panel in the house. I have replaced the patch cords at both ends of the connection and it made no difference.

Note that other than the internet issue the PC in the shop seems to be working fine for the little bit I use it for. I have a couple of spreadsheets that I use for tracking vehicle maintenance etc that all work fine.

My portable devices don't have ethernet jacks. Can I get an rj45 to USB dongle to put on my laptop?

Upgrading home network from a tired N600 (C3700) Netgear Cable modem WiFi combo

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 04:52 PM PST

Been reading a lot of posts in this sub, but still on the fence on which way to go down the upgrade path. I have a 1400 sqft home, with the N600 right in the middle. Maybe 10 home automation devices relegated to the 2.4 ghz network, and 4 high bandwith devices + phones on the 5ghz network. (3 computers and a Smart TV). I'll probably wire the TV in since it's right next to the modem anyways, but honestly it's not used that often.

Service through comcast, 75mbs down, 10(?) up. Most of the 5ghz networking should support AC, one computer is AX capable. I know there's a strong argument for splitting modem from WIFI/ Router, but i'm not looking to break the bank if I don't have to. Happy to chug the modem along (especially since I have not exactly speedy service) and get a new AP if that'll get the job done for now.

Had been looking at the tp-link ax3000, along with the RAX35 netgear at Walmart, but after reading a lot on here about QOS, cake, Codel, pie, etc - I'm not sure if they're a worthwhile investment. It looks like ubiq makes great stuff, but not sure if it's worth putting money into AC for this upgrade.

Costco also had a C6900 for like $140 just recently, and I'm sure it'll go on sale again. I think my modem is 8x4, so maybe it's worth it to just grab one of those and improve everything in one go?

Is there a decent wifi 6 AP that has QOS on it that is worthwhile? I haven't found too much info on the Rax35 or the TP-link, other than it looks rate limiting based on the tp-link.

Nighthawk R7000 detecting Ethernet cable but has no internet

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 04:46 PM PST

    Hey all,

I've had this router for about 5 months with no issues until now. I've verified my modem is working properly and have tested both Ethernet cables from modem to computer, where I have internet access. However once plugged into the router the amber light is on for the internet, and I have no WiFi or Ethernet.

I've reset the router using the reset pin (held for 7 seconds and verified a new default WiFi name was created). I can connect via WiFi but have no internet access.

At this point I'm wondering if the router has failed, and conveniently 2 months past the 3 month default warranty.

Could I use a 4G/LTE router with this existing antenna?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 04:11 PM PST

My friend lives in a rural house that has this antenna already installed by some previous rural broadband provider. The antenna is wired and exits downstairs as a ethernet cable.

I now want to buy a 4G sim and put it in a router and use this as the antenna. Will it work?

    Many thanks.

Whole home Ethernet and speaker wiring help.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 12:03 PM PST

    Hello all,

I'm trying to work out how to wire up my home. Ideally I was going to use the cavity in the exterior walls but they all have membrane and insulation so that's not possible.

Each Ethernet point on the floor plans will have 2 Cat6 feeds (apart from the WiFi AP) and the office and behind the living room at TV will have 4 points. This means there will be around 19/20 feeds in total. Speaker wire, there will be 12 wires in total so the actual diameter of wire initially will be quite a lot in terms of cm2.

I was thinking of maybe routing most into the attic/loft and spidering down? I would need to run it externally maybe using around 4cm x 10cm rectangle conduit which could be hidden from the front of the house by running up the side of the chimney area from the garage.

Ideas? I don't want anything to be on display really. Floor plans attached:

    Dual WAN backup question

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:09 PM PST

I run dual WAN on a EdgeRouter I have for the purposes of failover. With WAN being my main ISP (Spectrum) and my failover running a cellular connection with ATT. My big thing is being able to remotely access devices outside of the network

Having port forwarding setup it works fine after setting up port forwarding from my main ISP. However, I can't seem to connect to my network remotely when on failover.

    Any advice?
