Home Networking Crimping plugs vs. traditional patch panel vs. keystone patch panel

Crimping plugs vs. traditional patch panel vs. keystone patch panel

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 01:47 PM PST

Ahoy. I think there are three things that can happen to the ends of a Cat 5e/6/6A cable, and I'm trying to understand the electrical and signal quality differences, if any, before I roll up my sleeves on some major networking work. Here are three photos that I think capture the situation.

    Here are the three things:

    1. Crimp into RJ45 plugs.
    2. Punch down into a patch panel using 110 or Krone tools.
    3. Punch down into RJ45 keystone jacks. These jacks can be placed in wall plates or possibly in a patch panel.

Q1: Am I correct in my understanding that these are the three possibilities? What have I missed? (I'm a little hazy on #3, not sure about the prevalence of keystone patch panels.)

Q2: Regarding patch panels, what's better — #2 traditional punchdown, or #3 punchdown into keystone jacks? Eyeballing the photos, it seems like keystone jacks have tighter punchdown areas, maybe have shorter untwisted lengths...

I wonder what the total (untwisted?) conductor distance is for a traditional patch panel punchdown situation (#2) vs. keystones in a patch panel (#3) vs. RJ45 plugs going into female-female coupler-style patch panels (#1)... That might say something about relative signal quality.

    Thanks for your help.

    Raspberry Pi doubt

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:16 AM PST

First of all, sorry if this is not the correct sub for this question, but it was the only one I found that I may find what I want.

I have used a Raspberry-pi in the past to use as a DNS server for me (with Pi-hole), and it worked very well. Now, I'd like to know, if it would be possible, with the same raspberry-pi or with another device, to use a network-wide VPN to all my devices at home.

I'm not expert in networking, all I want is to have a network-wide DNS/Firewall (where I can block websites) and also use my paid VPN (I currently connect to my paid VPN using my Linux terminal with an OpenVPN config file).

    Thanks in advance!

Just wanted to be sure of what coax cable / ends to pick up.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:39 PM PST

I'm planning on connecting a 7730L ( https://www.amazon.com/Novatel-Verizon-Wireless-Jetpack-Advanced/dp/B06XKBY8V6 ) to an outside Wilson Yagi Antenna ( https://www.amazon.com/Electronics-Wideband-Directional-700-2700-314411/dp/B00J14YEHQ/ ) and just wanted to be sure of the ends / cable to pick up.

I believe that what I need is a LMR400 (50 om) coax cable (I'd say 30ft minimum, possibly 50ft if I decide to the antenna in a tree) with an N-Male to TS9 Male connections. Perhaps I'm overthinking it, but I was thinking of having the above ends on the cable itself and bypassing adapters / connectors that could introduce resistance.

I'm new at this and am unsure about the cable itself. https://www.wilsonamplifiers.com/blog/understanding-coaxial-cables-the-complete-guide/

Is LMR400 the sweetspot? Should I go higher or lower considering the outside antenna? How concerned should I be with shielding? How far should I keep it from the power line leading into the home (would that introduce interference, etc)? Is this attractive: https://www.ebay.com/itm/N-Male-to-TS9-Male-Right-Angle-Low-Loss-RF-Coaxial-RG58-Coax-Cable-1-3-5-10m/254412566738?hash=item3b3c2bb0d2:m:mCGkfmz-99L4jwg7FAT5JzA or should consider alternatives / making my own?

Thanks for any advice! Just want to make sure I do it right the first time.

Router not handing out the ipv6 Name Server addresses?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:36 PM PST

I have a Model:DPC3941T router/modem. It is properly handing out IPV6 addresses to attached devices, but not Name Servers.

I've tried with my Chromebook, my Windows 10 box, as well as with a machine running Arch Linux.

In all cases, it hands out an ipv6 address and configures the ipv6 default route, but does not give out the ipv6 name servers. I can use e.g. dig in ipv6 mode by giving it the address of one of Comcast's ipv6 name servers. So, the ipv6 stack is definitely working on the machines.

Trolling through the menus on the router UI - nothing jumps out at me as obvious.

Any ideas on what to look at?

Need help extending range upwards of 260ft

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:49 AM PST

This is what I'm working with

Xfinity will not run a second line from the utility pole to the other building unless I get a separate address attached to the parcel of land i'm on (can't be done currently).

This is a pretty big distance to cover.

Is it feasible to use any kind of wi-fi range extender in this case? If not are there any other options?

Can't use anything Google with home router since yesterday

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:23 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm having a strange issue right now and I don't know why.

Since yesterday (after about a year without changes and working great) my Home Mini's stopped working. I thought it was just something temporary because it's happened once before.

However, it seems that I can't use anything Google with my home network.

My desktop Windows PC works fine and there's no difference since yesterday.

However, my Google Home Mini's have stopped working (tells me to try again in a few seconds). My Nvidia Shield can't use Youtube or Netflix and only some apps. My phones can't access Gmail, Youtube, Home app, the app I use for lists (it's Google's and seem to only be a webpage).

Basically, I can't use any Google services, but only from "Google devices" (Android based + Mini's).

I'm pretty sure that it's my router that is causing the issue - I think. Because all those things - all the apps on my phone and the Nvidia Shield - they all work if I'm not connected to my Wifi with my phone. My Nvidia Shield also works if I connect to my phone hotspot.

But as soon as I reconnect the Nvidia Shield with ethernet (not wifi), or as soon as the phone reconnects to my wifi it stops working.

I should also note that I am using a 4G router, so I've tried the SIM card from my phone in the router - same issue.

I have made factory resets on the router and Home Mini's, but that didn't solve anything.

I guess it's the router then? I feel like I've tried everything else except another router (which I can't because I only have this one).

Any ideas? Because while it would seem logical that it is the router, it's strange that only Android devices are affected? As I said, my desktop PC works fine. Iphone also works according to edit below.

Edit: As per suggestions from users, I've tried more DNS servers. I've now tried Google, Cloudflare, 4.2.2.2 and my ISP's default. Same issue with all DNS servers, so that doesn't seem to be the issue. I also can't access Reddit and many other websites on my wifi though, but some work. So... I don't know.

Edit 2: I forgot that I have built-in wifi on my desktop PC, so I enabled that and disabled the ethernet card. So I'm connected to the same wifi as my phones, Home Mini's and Nvidia Shield. My PC still works even when connected through wifi. But not the other products - they still have the same issue.

Edit 3: To make things worse; My PC works fine, so I created a wifi hotspot on my PC, since it's using wired. I connected my phone to that hotspot and NOPE. It still doesn't work, yet it works on my PC!

Edit 4: My Xiaomi S5 vacuum has an app and that can be used both when I'm on my wifi and when I'm not. So the vacuum cleaner can use wifi just fine. But not my Home Mini's, my Galaxy S9, Nvidia Shield, Philips Hue bridge or Sony Android TV.

Edit 5: My brother came to visit with his Iphone X. He could access Youtube and Netflix through their app just fine while connected to my wifi. My Galaxy S9 and Nvidia Shield cannot access either Netflix or Youtube.

Edit 6: On my phone, Galaxy S9, I can't use the Youtube app at all - nothing shows up. But I can access youtube.com with the Chrome browser. I can see thumbnails etc, but when clicking a video all I get is infinite buffering (no network usage though), just as if I was using the app or the Nvidia Shield.

    What is going on!?

I was wondering how to make it so all or only my EAP225s are broadcasting on two SSIDs (MYSSID_HOME and MYSSID_GUEST) currently I have 6 SSIDs for my one home. (Router SSID and the 5G one, EAP225 #1's SSID and 5G and the same for EAP225 #2) I would like to be able to walk between access points and have them automatically switch between one another. Thx :)

Can I use dual band Asus Aimesh routers to build a 2.4/5ghz network without using a Tri band backhaul?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 08:24 PM PST

I'm trying to build a 2.4/5Ghz network using Asus AiMesh dual band routers.

What I'm trying to do is build a network with dedicated channel for gaming using 5Ghz, and another 2.4 Ghz general purpose network for work and home use.

Do I need a dedicated tri-band router for backhaul so the 5Ghz network stays uncongested? What's the optimal way to set up such network?

    Thank You.

cat6a or fiber for 10GbE home network

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:48 AM PST

Which of the two are easiest to install yourself in a home network spanning a couple of rooms? I briefly ran it by my cousin, who's an electrician yesterday, and she expressed concerns, that both technologies requires very expensive specialized equipment to test the connection qualities, when installed. Any input from here?

Desktop has trouble communicating with anything else

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:41 PM PST

This started as a Plex issue, but I feel that there is a deeper issue.

I currently have two Google Wifi units. My PC is connected by Ethernet to one of the Wifi units (the other is the main one; connected to cable through wall). I have two Plex servers: one on the PC, and another on a Raspberry Pi (RP). All my other devices (my iPhone and Apple TV) can access the RP server, and can play videos, but not the PC. When viewing the RP Plex server from the PC, it says it's "remote". Also, sometimes (but not always) when I turn "Remote networking" on my PC plex server on and off, my iPhone can access it. So it seems like for some reason my PC is on a different network, even though they are physically connected to the exact same network. Also, I can't SSH into the RP from my computer, I get the error: ssh: connect to host (ip address of RP) port 22: Permission denied. And I've double checked the IP address of the RP is correct.

Things I've tried: Bypassing the RP (using Google's DNS servers) Reseting all network settings on the PC Asking for help on Plex forums (no response; also, My concern that this is a more fundamental networking issue)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Question about POE Injector and Unifi

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:37 PM PST

Greetings. First, thank you in advance for reading this and answering my question. My google fu didn't really give me a definitive answer.

I am building a home network with a Unifi UDM Pro and 1 Unifi nanoHD AP for now. The only PoE device I will initially have is the AP. To save a little bit of money now, I want to possibly avoid purchasing a separate switch that has PoE. My question is, if I run Cat6 about 70 feet from the UDM Pro to the AP and put the PoE injector in the enclosure that houses the UDM Pro, will the 70 foot length of cable carry enough juice (technical term) to power the AP? The reason I would do this is becuase I do not have a power outlet located anywhere close to where I want to mount the AP.

Here is a rough visual of what I am explaining: https://imgur.com/CisR2aU

    RJ11 to RJ45 , TP Link Archer A7

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:26 PM PST

So i've just bought the TP-Link Archer A7 but the problem is that in my hometown their's no modems but rather the old traditional telephone cables , So my question here is there a way to actually connect an RJ45 Jack to an RJ11 Cable so that my router could connect directly to my ISP and if there's a way , Could you possibly share it with me?

    Internet/ethernet connection problems

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:30 PM PST

So My family has recently purchased an Asus wireless-AC2600 dual-band cable modem router. I have paired this with a tp-link powerline adapter that has ethernet passing through to my PC. My powerline adapter likes to randomly disconnect between each other, the connection between the pc and router is fine, its the connection between. The only way I have been able to fix it is to restart my router. I have been having to do this at least once a day. I would love to hear some feedback on how to fix this

network setup to make IP cams more secure?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 07:00 PM PST

Recently learned that my home network may not be as secure as it should. I have several Amcrest wireless IP cams facing outside that I don't fully trust for obvious reasons, but at the same time, I use it as a means of physical home security. What simple steps do I need to take to make my setup my secure without having to purchase more equipment? I currently have a TP-Link Archer C7 v3. It doesn't appear I can establish VLANs with my stock router and I'm reluctant to try flashing my router (afraid of bricking it). I supposed I can establish a Guest network for the IP cams, but I know that doesn't necessarily make it more secure. What else can I do?

Just setup MoCA network, but is this normal?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 03:05 PM PST

I was looking for a router to cover my 3 floor house, but someone suggested that I go with a MoCA.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/e6kclv/need_help_choosing_a_router/

I bought 2 motorola MoCA devices.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078HMDDVS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Previously on my basement pc with WiFi, I was getting 260-350 Mbps, on fast.com. With unloaded latency of 11ms and loaded latency of 102.

Now with MoCA setup I am getting 350-580 Mbps, on fast.com, with unloaded latency of 12ms and loaded latency of 400~1000 ms.

Is it normal to have 400~1000 ms latency when loaded? Which is way unstable than WiFi?

Also isn't MoCA suppose to have faster speeds? about 75%~80% of gigabit connection?

Should I try actiontec MoCA adapter and return the Motorola to amazon? Or is it something to do with old cable lines rather than anything else.

    Which Cable Should I Order?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 02:59 PM PST

First - I am in Canada, so limited selection, or I guess another approach to look at it: huge selection, if I want to pay massive shipping and duty, which I do not.

I am looking at running cat6a in my house. I know on here there is some debate over cat6 and cat6a. I would like to do this once, and I have Bell Aliant and their 1.5GBit internet, so may as well go cat6a.

My question - I've picked out 4 different cat6a bulk options, but I am uncertain of nuanced differences and was looking for a little assist.

1000ft Solid UTP CAT6a (750MHz) Network Cable - $194.95, and not sure about shipping. Also, they don't really give a lot of info on the wire, so... not really sure what to expect. Also thought Cat6A was up to 500MHz? Perhaps I misunderstood during my research.

Cat6A 23AWG UTP Solid Bulk Cable, CMR/FT4, 1000ft - $249.99, free shipping. I think the brand is PrimeCables (which, is also the company...). There is more detail on this, but no real clue what is different.

SolidLink 1000ft CAT6A S/FTP in-Wall (CMR Rated) UL Listed Bare Copper Solid 23AWG Conductor 550Mhz Fluke Tested Ethernet Wire - $272.69, free shipping. Has good reviews.

Cat6A Riser (CMR), 1000ft, Blue, 23AWG 4 Pair Solid Bare Copper, 750MHz, ETL Listed, Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) - $301.17, plus $37.20 Import Fees. Made by TrueCable. Has really solid reviews.

Right now, leaning towards the SolidLink or the PrimeCables. Just looking for someone to confirm or suggest something else? I'd like to order tonight or tomorrow morning.

Also, as I am going to be doing the runs myself, any suggestions on tools is always appreciated. I planned on looking for tools by Klein at Home Depot or on Amazon.ca as I've heard reputable things about their tools.

    Asus AC3100 to AX11000

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 06:24 PM PST

I've had my AC3100 for 3 or four year now, but I'm afraid it's starting to suffer from the number of wifi devices I've accumulated throughout those years. It used to work flawlessly at top speeds on wifi and wired connections, but now I'm getting maybe 60% of the speed I used to over wifi. Would it be beneficial for me to go for the AX11000 now? Range really isn't an issue in my 1,200 square foot two story home. I just want to make sure everything is running optimally with all of my smart home equipment that I have amassed over the years. I have 5 nest cameras running 24/7 along with at least one of every other nest device, nest hubs and minis, 5 computers, 3 smart phones, a tablet, wemo smart switches, 4k smart tvs and streaming devices, hue in every light socket and that's probably the tip of the ice berg off the top of my head. Any advice is appreciated.

Looking at upgrading my router and need help

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 06:12 PM PST

I've got about 2,800 sqft to work with. My internet speed is 600mbps and I'm currently using a TP-Link TGR1900 (Google OnHub). We have two devices that use AX in our home and I do everything via wifi (streaming video, gaming on PS4, and roughly 20 wifi devices around).

The reason for wanting to upgrade is my wife will sometimes complain about our network being slow. Any suggestions? I'm not going to run Ethernet cable and would like the simplest solution of a new router. I'm looking around $200-$250 budget. I've dug around on this subreddit and haven't found a similar problem to mine in any recent months so I was hoping to get a current suggestion, especially with AX being finalized now.

    Thanks everyone!

Block multi-ip website for a couple hours each day

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 05:46 PM PST

I am looking for a way to block Roblox from my kids from the time they get home until we parents get home. 3pm to 5pm. We are fine with them being on Roblox at other times, but they need to work on homework when they get home and in terms of blocking the internet, they need to be able to do homework which seems to be Google/Chrome dependent (all your Google Docs, Classroom, etc. tools) and involve research like Wikipedia.

I know, I should just be a better parent. Thank you. Since my wife and I suck at being awesome parents, we would still like to give our latchkeys some freedom (enough to do homework or listen to music videos on youtube), but restrict access to the things we identify as time sucks.

I would happily try a NetNanny-type thing. Yep, could be an issue with devices, but even just making things harder for them helps. I have a pfSense router, but filtering web traffic that uses TLS is not straightforward even with squidGuard, and certificate setup with proxies and squid is pretty involved and prone to just failing outright.

Anyway, if there is a Netnanny product that can tackle a roblox issue let me know, I would be eternally grateful. If you have tips for how you made pfSense do the trick, I'd appreciate that too. Maybe there's a shell script I can run to add and remove stuff from the hosts file if my needs are simple. Any advice is appreciated.

Unifi Access Points with Arris Touchstone DG3270A Modem/Router

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 05:33 PM PST

Helping my brother setup new access points in his house. Right now he has a Arris Touchstone DG3270A as his modem/router combo.

I was wondering if we could continue using this modem/router and use Unifi Access Points with it. I understand that getting a USG would probably be better but he's already getting good speeds with this current setup (700+Mbps down).

Should I expect any problems using the the Unifi Access Points in this setup?
