Can I use a pi to make an air-gapped network for some smart devices?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:21 PM PST

I got a pair of smart plugs recently, and I don't want them connected to my actual network. However, they have to have Wifi to function.

I was hoping to have something set up where I have a Pi broadcasting its own Wifi that the plugs connect to, but have the Pi itself listen on my real wifi without allowing any outbound traffic from the plugs' wifi network.

Then I could set up some dumb webserver on the Pi that I could poke with a simple http request or something from my phone, that makes the Pi send a command over the plugs' wifi.

I know it is probably overkill, but I think it would be fun to practice. I'm a software developer but I don't have much experience with networking.

If anyone could tell me the right terms to google for this I would be grateful.

    Lost in VLANs and tagging

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 09:11 AM PST

I am trying to rebuild home network but do not know how to proceed.

Some of the parts used to build network infrastructure:

    • Edgerouter X
    • Unifi Switch 8 60W
    • D-Link DGS-1100-08 Managed Switch
    • A bunch of unmnanaged Netgear switches

    Main goals for network:

    • One VLAN for network infrastructure and servers (NAS, Pi-hole, Unifi controller, proxmox)
    • Main VLAN for most stuff that will connect to the network (wired and wireless)
    • Second untrusted VLAN (wired and wireless)
    • As secure as reasonably possible. Fairly strict firewall rules

Especially I am unsure about when to send tagged/untagged VLANs.

Two VLANs have their own SSID and both are transmitted from two Unifi APs.

    1. One Unifi AP is connected directly to Unifi Switch. Should the switch send both those VLANs tagged? All VLANs untagged? Other?
    2. The other Unifi AP is connected to the D-Link managed switch that itself is connected to the Edgerouter.
Should I send all VLANs untagged (or tagged???) between Edgerouter and the switch? Then tagged VLANs from D-Link switch to AP ?

New Detached Garage Build, multiple cables or switch?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:38 PM PST

I am planning on building a new detached garage and am debating whether to run multiple CAT6 cables or use a switch. 4 runs would be POE cameras that go to an existing swann NVR in my rack, so I think a switch is out for those. 1 ap, 1 computer. Anything else I am missing?

    Thanks

    Upgrading home network to Gigabit

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:45 AM PST

    Hi,

I'll start by describing my network and then ask my question.
I've 1 PC with Gigabit card and 1 NAS with Gigabit card both connected to simple unmanaged switch (100Mb)
The switch is connected to my router which is Mikrotik HAP Lite (100Mb).
    (Quick sketch here: https://imgur.com/a/QzDB8iP)

The main goal is to get more speed when transferring files between my PC and the NAS.

My question is, if I replace the switch with Gigabit one, will I get Gigabit connection between my PC and NAS? or it depends on the router as well?

    Thank you!

    Outdoor camera purchase advice?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:25 PM PST

For better or worse I have a Google/Nest doorbell camera. It works well and I do like it. Though I understand the pros and cons of these cloud products.

At any rate I'm looking into getting at least one outdoor camera. Maybe one day I'll get more for more coverage but right now I just want one to cover the backdoor.

Google/Nest has cameras. $200 or $400 for the device. Plus another cloud subscription. I kind of like the idea of having the video not be in the cloud for a few reasons, but primarily because it requires internet to function and puts all the power in the vendor (they could hypothetically brick the device tomorrow and it would be useless). But I'm not inherently opposed to using cloud for an outdoor camera.

The UniFi Protect cameras look nice for a not cloud option. Cameras are around the same price point but then I need to spend another $200 for a cloud key gen 2 for the video storage I think.

One of the reasons I'm asking here is also for the wiring considerations. There's some flexibility where I mount it but it's not going to easily have Ethernet. I have Ethernet ports in a few locations but nothing that close to where I'd like to mount a camera.

I have power outside of my house if needed. There is a light that I could tie into I suppose. There are also some outlets though those are lower.

Anyways, it would be nice to have a camera but this feels overwhelming for such a small project.

Do you have any advice to point me in the right direction?

Am I doing this wiring cat5 e right?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 02:30 PM PST

So I own a 2 flat building and I pay for 600 mbs speed with Comcast. I sent a cat6 cable first thru Wall and tested speeds and got 570mbs on a 50ft cable.. So now I ran a cat5e cable into ethernet plate both upstairs and downstairs. But now I'm only getting 90mbs. Idk what I'm doing wrong. I wired both ends using T568b. Only went with cat5e cause that's what I had on had and they didn't have female to female adapter. I have Comcast and located in Chicago. Do I use A or B. I don't have any ethernet wiring in house at all. Thanks in advance.

I’m stuck with DSL internet where I live. Would getting a 3rd party router improve performance at all?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 02:40 PM PST

I'm using the router my ISP gave me and am wondering if a 3rd party router would be worth getting?? My devices sometimes randomly disconnect from my network and I have to reset EVERYTHING for them to connect again. Any advice?

Couple questions about getting started with a 10gb network

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:20 PM PST

I'm doing some rebuilding of our network at home and adding some hardware to step up to a 10 GB network but I have a few questions.

So far I think I've figured out what to do. Every computer is going to get a NIC (10GTek X520-10G-1S-X8) added to it and I know I need SFP+ (10GTek 1000Base-T: 100m) connectors to be able to connect the NICs to a switch (MikroTik CRS305).

I have three machines I'm trying to get to be able to talk to each other - two desktops and a NAS.

For the cabling in between the SFP connectors, is it just CAT 7 cable or do I need to look for something different?

I'm also a bit confused about how I get a connection from my modem to the switch. If I'm just using CAT 7 cable, won't that be a bottleneck and my internal network speed will be hampered by what's being fed into it?

    Thanks in advance.

    Home server utilities help?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 06:05 PM PST

Hey-o guys, long time listener, first time caller.

I'm setting up a Windows 10 NUC running UNMS on Ubuntu in a Virtualbox for my home monitoring. I have yet to place this in my network.

    1) Can I connect my server to eth2 on the EdgeRouter to supply it with direct gateway and net access, give it a dynamic dns login, and have it function much like a cloud key?

    2) I've found freeradius for both Window and Ubuntu, would it be better to run this on my host or virtualized OS?

    3) What other software/utilities would you suggest for this setup? I know I'll have to install the Unifi controller (Host or virtual again) when I install my APs that are on the way... but would there be anything useful for turning my eSATA port into a NAS port to be used with my 3TB external?

Just wanted to get others take on this, and what might be worth exploring. I've done plenty of consumer set ups before, but this is my first chance to really expand my set up.

Trying to decide on a wifi6 router

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:47 PM PST

Trying to decide which is better for me.. the Asus RoG Rapture GT-AX 11000 or the Netgear AX12 Rax200.

My home consists of smart home products with more going to be added. Home currently Note 10 plus and 2 galaxy 10 plus phones (all 3 wifi6 capable). Will be building a new computer in the next 6 months. Another new desk top to be added soon. New tablets before years end. So will be looking for wifi6 capable on those items. I stream to 5 tvs using amazon 4k cubes. This is most of our home products.... any advice?

Help with home networking shopping list

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:19 PM PST

    House Details:

3 floors, 2400 SqFt. Very easy to wire all 3 floors, so PoE solutions are fine.

    -------- Details:

I'm fairly tech savy, except for when it comes to picking networking equipment. I have multiple home servers. I also would like to stream (netflix/hulu) seamlessly to each floor.

    What I have now:

    - 48P Cisco Enterprise Switch

    - 1Gbps/1Gbps ISP Connection (with sla)

    - smart tv's, chromecasts, streaming, etc.

    - several racked servers (plex, etc)

    - PoE Camera system

    - I run a couple of small websites on my systems, hence the consideration of adding a security gateway

    --------

What I'm looking for help on is:

    Router, Mesh, Modem, Security Gateway?

As an example of an answer I'm looking for:

    --------

    1x Unifi Security Gateway

4x UniFi AC Mesh AP or UAP-AC-M-PRO-5

    1x Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 12P

    1x Some random good modem?

    ---------

    Budget max is 1500.

1Gigabit broadband, being throttled to 100mp

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 09:35 AM PST

    Hi Guys,

i'm a bit of a noob with networking but any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

i'm on a 1gb service and was previously using a power line adaptor to connect my desktop, it would run at the full 1gb but suddenly drop to 100mb until i unplugged the adaptor and shazam would be back to 1gb.

i initially thought, the adaptor was faulty so bought a new switch to fix the issue, but upon installing the new switch i was getting the full 1gb, but now has dropped back to 100mb. even with restarting/unplugging its staying at 100mb.

Does anyone has any idea how i can fix this?

    Many thanks!

1gbps internet speed, wired router (ASUS RT-AC87U) only getting 250 mbps

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:03 PM PST

    Hello all!

As the title suggests, I have an ASUS RT-AC87U. Recently moved to an apartment that has fiber for only $50 a month! I have plugged my laptop directly into the wall with a cat 7 cable, and get 1000 mbps. But, wired to the router with another cat 7 cable, only getting 250 mbps. QoS is off (saw that in an older post). Hm. Any ideas??

What are the security risks to allow a host to connect to two Vlan

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 06:51 PM PST

I have linux host connected to an un-tagged lan normally. My Plex server running in this host. The problem is that my Roku player is on the IOT vlan, so it cannot access the plex server. In a rush, I add another network interface to allow the host connect to IOT vlan in addition to the un-tagged lan. Now the Roku can play the contends from plex server.

Although it solved my problem, but I feel uncertain if this is a good practice. What do you think? What are the security risks?

Thanks for any insight about this concern.

    Terminating thicker cat 6 cable

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 02:49 PM PST

I need to run some cat 6 cable to outdoor IP cameras. This cable on amazon seems to be a good bet (https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Waterproof-Unshielded-Ethernet-trueCABLE/dp/B01JAVMYLM/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=ethernet%2Bcat6%2Boutdoor&qid=1577002339&s=electronics&sr=1-5&th=1 ), however I just realized it's thicker because it has the star filler, so common crimping tools for cat 6 either are said not to work, or work very poorly.

What's your take? Are there crimping tools that work with this or Cat 6A? Should I just pick a different cable?

    Thanks much!

Trying to share my Plex library with neighbor, we have the same ISP, which seems to be causing a double NAT

Need advice with getting internet in my room

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:53 PM PST

I game on my PC in my room and have been trying numerous solutions to get good internet in my room. The house Router is in another room, and all I have going into my room is a coax cable. I've been using a wireless USB adapter on my desktop to connect to the router, but the internet is really bad for gaming, so someone suggested an Actiontex Moca ECB2500C. Some have told me I'd be able to hook it up with what I have, and others have told me it's impossible without a modem/router. I really don't have any knowledge on the situation and just really looking for help and answers. Right now I have the coax cable running to the moca. and then the moca running right into my PC with a cat6 cable. I have the power and ethernet light on, but not the coax light. When i flip the switch that changes the function the ethernet and coax light turns on but not power light. If it is impossible for me to set this up without a modem/router what would anyone suggest I do? I just want good internet for my desktop without having to use a cheap wireless adapter.

IP forwarding for unraid server with new address

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:33 PM PST

    Hey friends.

I am trying to finally start setting up my VLANs after years of talking about it (mostly for fun/experience).

My biggest hurdle is my unraid server. I have several dozen services pointed at it with hard coded lan addresses, some on the same device and some external.

Is it possible to have my router point requests to the old address to a new one? That way I don't have to manually fix all the different spots it's listed.

In case anyone is curious, this is a problem for the absolute dumbest reason ... I'm on 192.x.x.x and want to use 10.x.x.x with the first x being different subjects for different uses (admin, home automation, devices, guest, etc). I could easily just use 192.168.1.x for admin and avoid this problem all together, but now I am curious about forwarding.

    Cheers and thanks in advance!

Can't disable UPnP and WPA1 on new wireless router - solutions, advice?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:23 PM PST

    Hello,

Got a decent deal on a new wireless router. Stock firmware lacks these settings, and there is no alternative firmware. Buying another model is not a good option for a number of reasons, I need a workaround.

    1. UPnP. From my understanding it is a critical security risk.

Solution I see is delegating routing and firewall functions to another device, and using new wireless router as dumb ap & ethernet switch. I have a device running OpenWRT ready to be deployed. Is it the right course of action? Any caveats?

    2. WPA1. How bad is it having WPA1/WPA2 enabled instead of WPA2/WPA3 only? Is it a security risk that can be exploited?

There is no WPA security setting anywhere. WPA3 is supposed to work but my WPA3-capable client connects over WPA2. WPS is disabled, thankfully.

    Best router for decent internet?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:56 PM PST

I'm sure many people have similar issues but I was unable to find anything when using the search bar.

What should I be looking for in a router to improve my ethernet experience (mostly gaming)?

Currently using a Netgear N600 and don't have the ability to choose my own ISP as I live in a condo. Download speed is decent, 89 download and 91 upload.

Please let me know if there is somewhere else I should be posting this or if I am breaking any rules!

    Thanks!

How to schedule access time -. TP Link Archer 59 routet

    Hi

We are looking to limit certain devices in the house (ie: teenagers cellphone and smart tv in the basement) to only work during certain hours of the day. With TP Links app, we can set either parental controls (browser is blocked but apps still work) or manually block a device but looking to set a schedule so we dont have to do this on a nightly basis.

Netgear R7900P vs Archer C4000 or other

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:39 PM PST

Planning to ditch the crappy modem comcast charges for and get some good stuff and upgrade to 600mbps or gigabit. I'm looking at a Netgear CM1000 or Motorola MB8600 for the modem since those are on comcast's approved list for gigabit, then pair that with either a Netgear R7900P (can get refurbed for 80) or a TP-Link Archer C4000 (150). Any other recommendations or ideas?
