What (wireless) router should I purchase?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 03:26 PM PST

    Hi there!

I've recently stumbled upon a need for a better wireless router than the one provided by my ISP. Most of my home is wired, and that's fine, but now I need more wireless 'oomph'.

Currently I have my ISP supplied SuperHub 3.0 (Virgin Media in the UK), along with a few switches scattered around, and a Unifi UAP-AC-Pro. The SuperHub 3.0 covers my downstairs (not very well) and the Unifi covers upstairs and the attic room. My performance with the Unifi has always been flawless. I get great speed everywhere with it, and I've had no problems with it, other than the ones I've induced myself when messing around with the settings.

I had a similar setup a few years ago, but I had my SuperHub set in modem mode, with an ASUS RT-N66U as my router. It worked pretty well, but I want something with AC capability for my downstairs area.

I was looking at the ASUS RT-AC86U but it doesn't have very good close range speed, which will be a problem. So, here are my requirements:

Good (doesn't have to be amazing) short and long range speeds and coverage. Downstairs is very open, so there isn't much blocking the signal.

    AC signal

Preferably wall mountable, but not absolutely necessary.

    I don't require any fancy gaming-focused features, so they aren't a deal-breaker either way.

I don't want to break the bank as far as budget goes but I'm willing to spend up to around £200. Less is better though.

Also, I know that I could quite easily add another Unifi access point to my network, but ideally I want to move the routing away from the SuperHub and just have it in modem mode. I also don't want to set up another server running PFsense etc, so an all in one wireless router is the route (pun intended) that I want to go down.

Apologies if this isn't the correct sub, or if I've missed out some vital information.

    Thanks.

Edit: I'm currently on Virgin Media's M350 package, but I get an average of closer to 500Mbps.

ASUS ac68u broken antenna, which one is 2.4/5Ghz?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 05:50 PM PST

Unfortunately my router fell at an angle and one of the antennas broke. The far left one if your looking at it from the front. Looks like it broke inside the board and solder points might have broken off

Are all 3 antennas dual 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz? Or is there two 5.0 and one 2.4? Seeing if it's worth opening up and fixing it since I'm only using it as an access point.

IP camera can no longer be remotely viewed

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:34 PM PST

I used to be able to view my feed using the CCS link app on my phone, but I can only do that while I'm on the local network. When I'm away or on 3G, the feed will not load. I have an OpenDNS account and I noticed several attempts (~8000 a day) to connect to novel domain names around the same date I could no longer remotely view my feed. I'll provide them if needed as a screenshot, but the moderators are not allowing me to post the domain names because they appear to be URL shorteners.

I added the streaming port 554 to be port forwarded within my router, but that did not fix the situation... any ideas??

Can I plug my modem directly into the line that comes from the street?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:48 PM PST

Mediacom put down a new "drop" that looks like a big orange cable. They did this because my connection has been bad. They are saying that because my connection is still bad it must be the wiring in my house. I'm skeptical of this so I want to eliminate all outside factors and bypass the wiring to my house and plug my modem directly into the orange line coming from the street. Is this okay/dangerous?

Create two way vpn tunnel or proxy between countries

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:22 PM PST

Both people have internet access, both have access to multiple routers etc.

I live in the UK and need to access services that only work in my home country Czech Republic and need to access my friends network

He lives in the Czech Republic and needs to access UK services such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, etc. and my server (contains movies), i.e. he needs to simulate being connected to my network, again we both have internet and need to somehow have either a proxy on both sides or have a VPN tunnel somehow, we need this to be independent and not run from other services such as pre existing VPN's etc.

Since i am quite new to this, could i please be given either youtube tutorials that will help and cover everything, detailed instructions and links to software or some kind of online tutorial

    Thanks

    Martin

This is the second time posting this here as the first time i didn't get a detailed enough/working answer

Will this work? Or will I have too replace the CAT 5 cables to Cat 6. Also in the room section feeding it into a Network Switch (TP link 5 port gb).

General questions about routers and modems

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 06:57 PM PST

Looking to get a router and/or modem for Xfinity/Comcast, but I have some questions...

    1. I always hear it's better to get a separate modem and router rather than an AiO device, but why? Couldn't I theoretically have a single AiO modem/router that's better and possibly even cheaper than two separate devices in the same price bracket?
    2. If buying separate, can the modem bottleneck the router? Basically, I'd rather put most of my budget into a good router, but would I be doing myself a disservice by cheaping out on the modem too much?
    3. I'm assuming you should choose a modem that has a greater download speed than what you're currently capable of (right now my plan says that I can get up to 200mbps, but in reality, I'm often getting in the range of 50-100 mbps), so what sort of download speeds should I aim for when purchasing a modem and/or router?
    4. Are all download speeds "created equal" when comparing modems/routers? There are so many brands and so many models within the brands. Some claim 100mbps download, 300, 400, 4000000, etc., so can I take that for face value? In other words, are there other details and specifications on the product pages that I should pay attention to when comparing?

EDIT: Forgot, I know you need to worry about compatibility with modems, but what about routers? Should any router work regardless of your ISP?

Problem with getting my Arris DG1670 to Forward Ports..

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 06:33 PM PST

Ok guys! I have NO WHERE ELSE to turn and im about ready to put a bullet in either my head or this damn router.....

I have an Arris DG1670 That i use with my ISP (Vyve Broadband). I have tryed to get this damn thing to forward ports needed to hose a server for a game. I have tried several ports and several different games. Each and every time it refuses to do it. It SAYS they are forwarded under the router, but each time i try to check to see if it is open, it comes back with it being closed.

I have called my ISP, they tell me to call Arris, they tell me to call my ISP. So not a damn one of them are worth dirt....I have no where else to turn but here......Any idea what the hell is going on? I also tryed turning my windows firewall off and on as well as the router firewall off and on....nothing.

    Server power supply lingo

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 06:19 PM PST

Ahoy. I'm shopping server parts for the first time, today power supplies, and I'm confused by the lexicon. I see listings for:

"Dual AC": What's the benefit of dual AC inputs? It's a single power supply, so what's the angle? I'm not going to have two different electric utilities.

"Redundant power supply": These are for single power supplies, or so it seems, which is confusing. How does a store know that a power supply is going to be redundant? They don't know what I'm going to do with it, or if I'll even buy two of them, which would be necessary for redundancy. Is there something about the design of a PSU that would make it destined for redundant duty?

Some of them have two fans, which made me think that a redundant PSU is actually two power supplies in one case (they should use the plural not the singular), but then I saw some with only one fan, which makes them seem like single power supplies...

"Spare redundant power supply": Who says it's going to be a spare? They don't know what I'm going to do with it. What gives? (This one also has only one fan, sure looks like a singleton power supply.)

p.s. Intel makes power supplies? Both AVADirect and Newegg are selling PSUs ostensibly made by Intel. I had no idea.

    Ethernet Over 3 Wires?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 05:38 PM PST

I have what may be a very unique problem. I just bought a new house, my first place that had CAT5e drops in the walls and was excited to use them. There is a drop in every room and they all run to a back closet. First time I tested and one port is dead. I got a cable tester in hopes that if at least 4/8 wires were good then I could rewire the socket and run 100BASE-T. No, cable tester shows 3 wires with continuity. I recrimped both ends but no difference.

Now I am at an impass. I really want to run a network over this wire but obviously BASE-T isn't going to work. I have come up with a potential solution of putting a media converter on both sides to adapt to a protocol that needs 3 wires or less. So far I am having difficulty finding a good protocol.

    • RS232 would probably work and converters exist but 115kb/s is basically the stone age
    • USB is faster and has a similar enough cable impedance to BASE-T but I don't really see any media converters available
    • 100BASE-T1 is probably the best solution but the only T to T1 converter I found is $300 each and I'm not willing to spend that much.

I have plenty of room on both sides so size isn't an issue, but the closet lacks power. I have a PoE drop there but that's it, so any device would have to run off 12 or 5VDC. I am an electrical engineer by trade so I am capable of making some custom solution but I really don't have the time or money right now to be making complex PCBs for personal projects.

Any suggestions? Am I missing any other obvious options here or maybe someone knows a media converter that isn't so expensive and is reasonably quick? Any help is appreciated.

Wifi drop out only happening with macbook's

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:27 PM PST

Hi guys im in serious need of your expertise.

My macbook will constantly drop its internet connection (mostly noticeable when streaming videos through youtube etc). It seems to be only an issue with the macs throughout the household as my brother doesn't have this problem when using his windows laptop and gaming pc. I've also tested it with my mums mac and she seems to have the same issue as me.

I have done everything I can to troubleshoot my mac and have contacted both apple and my ISP about the issue but no one seems to know whats causing the problem.

The only way I have dealt with it is by using hotspot on my iPhone to browse the internet.

Please if you could give me any advice it would be GREATLY appreciated as it drops connection every 2 minutes or so and is unbearably frustrating.

    Thanks!

How to have devices be on the same network with some connected to router & other connected to modem.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 04:13 PM PST

I have my DLS modem feeding a 24 port TPlink unmanaged switch which then feeds different rooms in my house as well as a wifi router. (WRT1900ACS linksys). I am having issues with my shield hard wired picking up the channels from the HD homerun that is also hard wired. I also have issues trying to cast from phones to the shield. I've restarted everything in the correct order many times & the issues aren't resolving. Not sure what else to do or what settings to change. Would love some advice.

Help choosing a new router with xfinity

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 03:36 PM PST

Could use some help (xfinity)home network

    Hello,

I could use some help if this is not allowed here please let me know and i will remove it. I have been in IT for about 15 years (not network other then basics) I work out of my home and use wifi and wired connections. My wifi has always been horrible. I have tried different channels etc. with no luck as i sit here in the room with the modem/router ( ARRIS TG1682G) my pc I have on wifi has like 3 bars. I run a a hyper v computer and use port forwarding for the vm's to have rdp over the net (I know its not great but the people using it would never understand vpn.) this has worked fien for months woke up this morning and couldnt connect to any of t hem wireshark show the syn making it to the router but never getting ack. If i rdp over the local network to the same ports i connect just fine. After fighting this all day and spending hours with xfinity troubleshooting I have gotten no where. I am thinking it is time i take it out of there hands and buy my own wifi router and just bridge to there modem.

Would anyone have any good suggestion for this my apt is around 1300 sq ft looking to improve my wifi in the apt and be able to actually manage my own port forwarding.

Thank you for reading if I left any needed information out please let me know and thanks in advance.

    Very high internet cost?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 11:43 AM PST

Guys from r/networking told me this is home networking so I hope I can ask my question here.

I live in a big building with 600 other students for my studies but we only have internet via cable. After a lot of asking the owner of the building (the university) will install WiFi.

BUT the price/person/month will be €12. We get cable and wireless internet with a max. of 200GB person (now we have only 5GB).

I think this is a bit overpriced? I understand they need to install the equipment, but still... what do you guys think?

    Thanks!

Thinking of ditching port forwarding in favour of IPv6. But need tips on discoverability.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:37 PM PST

I have a shocking number of devices that I'd like to be able to access away from home. I'm thinking about turning off port forwarding except for a single VPN port, and using IPv6 as a means of connecting to my home computers with the VPN being a fallback.

The only problem is that IPv6 addresses are quite long and not exactly memorable. I could set up reserved IPs for every machine, but I'm not sure there's a point. My preferred solution is to put a DNS client on each machine and have it update a domain record so that each device has a subdomain that points to the proper address.

Has anyone done this? Should I keep using my Namecheap DNS or somehow set up my own nameserver? It would be pretty nice if I could forward a request for raspberrypi.mydomain.net to the device named "raspberrypi", for instance. However, i'm fine with putting a CURL script or other DNS updater on each machine individually if necessary. Maybe I'm overthinking this or barking up the wrong tree. I have an Asus router which supports IPv6, but I don't think it goes as far as supporting IPV6 domain records or finding the specific addresses of connected devices. Come to think of it, i'm not even sure if the devices are going through the router's DHCP server or just grabbing from the subnet themselves.

I don't expect Reddit to be my research assistant, I'm just curious if anyone's done anything like this on their home network.

Should I run my router as a router or access point?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:53 PM PST

I have gigabit internet from AT&T and I have it set up so that the modem/router they gave me is in the central panel connected via ONT and then each port connected to an ethernet cable that makes the ethernet outlets on each room accessible. On one of those outlets I have an Archer A7 setup and it gave me the option to set it up as a Router or as an Access Point. Which do I choose? It is currently on AP, but whats the difference. The reason I am questioning this is because my download speeds are not reflecting the speed tests I do. I get speed tests of 940 ish, but when I try downloading anything, it goes around 40 megabytes per second or less.

Can I use a portable wifi hotspot in lieu of crappy local cable/internet providers?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 09:00 AM PST

My family and I have a rental home in Puerto Rico and we use a local cable provider for our cable/internet service. It costs me $115/month for the mid-level cable and internet package. It has become one of the sole reasons why our guests reach out to us with issues. The wifi is either super slow or the cable is out often because of the pretty bad infrastructure. If I call in to request a technician, it often takes a couple of weeks for them to stop by. On top of that, some of our older guests aren't sure how to switch to cable when someone prior to them changed the input over to the DVD player. Because I live in NYC and our property manager in P.R. isn't technologically savvy, I find myself having to get on the phone and walk our guests through the process of getting the cable to work.

In order to simplify all of this, I was considering ditching our cable/internet provider (bye Liberty!) and getting a wifi hotspot device (i.e. Skyroam Solis), securing it to the wall near our TV with the wifi password on it and then giving our guests access to streaming services like Hulu or Netflix (we have a smart TV so we'll just have them already signed in).

    Here are my perceived benefits:

    • An unlimited wifi plan is $99 (cheaper than what we pay now).
    • I have the option of just paying for the wifi that's used ($6/GB - great during slower rental months).
    • I cut down the amount of remotes that guests need to use, which i think is less confusing.
    • I wont be affected if the local cable tower goes down.

So essentially I'm wondering if using a travel hotspot like the Skyroam would be feasible to provide wifi to our rental guests as well as connecting a chromecast/smart TV to it? This was originally posted on the /r/AirBnB sub but I would love to get more technical feedback from this sub, if possible.

I need to segment my wifi, which mesh wifi solution allows me to have more than 2 segments?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:28 PM PST

    So here's a story

I want to separate some of the devices, i have my work machine, which i want to have on separate segment, some personal devices (phones laptops tablets), bunch of iot stuff (home assistant + some additional gadgets which includes home made ones) and i want to have additional network for guests. Which adds up to 4 segments. Setting up 4 routers each for different network, wont work as i need to boost signal to have connectivity in some areas. Hence i was planning to use mesh network. unfortunately most mesh solutions which i saw, offer only 2 segments.

    and here comes the question..

did i missed something in my research, and is there any mesh wifi system which will allow me that kind of segmentation

or shall i live with my paranoia and get 2 segments

    Virgin media rant!

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 03:55 PM PST

Just ranting and this is the only place I've found out to be able to rant. Im UK and on virgin media 100mbps contract and wifi went down at 2pm GMT so i looked at their site and it said it would be fixed by 6:30pm. An inconvenience but thats fine. 6:40 rolls by, still no internet. Check their site and now its 11:30pm it should be fixed by. Starting to get frustrated. 11:54 rolls by and still nothing. Once again i check the site and it says december 19th (tomorrow) 13:30pm GMT or 1:30pm. I hate too rant but this is what im paying for and not recieving even 1mbps of what im paying, this is the Christmas spirit! (Using my hotspot bridged to my laptop that is connected to my ethernet into my main pc) main pc doesn't have a wireless adaptor. I need to do work aswell. I wouldn't hesitate to put a bullet through Richard bransons dyslexic brain, this is ridiculous.

My problem is that other than that device, I have a 4k chromecast and PS4 in that same living room that id also like to be wired into the router rather than wifi. What device can I connect the 1 100ft cable I have in the living room that will give me 3 Ethernet ports to connect the wirelss access port, my PS4, and the Chromecast? I'm not sure if this is what I need? or something else...
