Great deal gaming laptop with 144hz and 1660ti under 1k

Great deal gaming laptop with 144hz and 1660ti under 1k

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 11:35 PM PST

    Here is the deal

It is under 1k and it is the Eluktronics-MECH-15

I am posting this now for those of you who already know this laptop and know how great is this price but I will edit it later when I am on PC with a longer review of it meanwhile you can find it on my website in the under 1500 gaming laptop article.

Edit2: People notified me that there is also this EVOO which is a gaming laptop from Walmart which comes with similar specs for 850$ let me guys know if you are interested in it and I will look for more info on it.

And this Y540 from lenovo which is also on sale from walmart.

Edit: here is the review :

    • It comes with GTX 1660Ti GPU and it will run your games on medium to high settings, You can check the below link to see how the GTX 1660Ti GPU (scroll down for the FPs and settings expected or ctrl+f then type the name of your game).

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1660-Ti-Laptop-Graphics-Card.386426.0.html

    • It weighs 4.5 lbs which is light for a gaming laptop with this power.
    • The outer shell is made almost entirely out of metal.
    • Keyboard is mechanical with RGB backlit so it might not be best if you type a lot in quiet area lika library or a classroom.

    • It has 3 USB type A, Ethernet, and mic and headphone jack and on the back an HDMI, and USB type C.

    • Screen is IPS with 144Hz refresh rate, with impressively small bezels, and a professional design for those of you who might use it in a professional environment.

    • Lid can't be open with one hand.

    • Fans get loud under intensive work, but that is normal with every good gaming laptop.

    • Plenty of upgrade options as the chassis supports up to 32GB of ram, and 2 SSDs and 1 HDD.

    • Heat management is great, it can get hot but it gets cool again pretty quickly once the fans kick in.

    • Main con of the laptop is the trackpad, it is mediocre at best when you compare it to other laptops in the price range.

    • Battery life during normal usage is around 3.5-4.5 hours and 1.5 hour during gaming.

    • Speakers are down facing so during gaming, it is best to wear headphone since the fan gets loud during gaming as well.

If you want to check similar option make sure to check my list of best gaming laptops under 1500 in 2019

This would be a great gift for Christmas for your bf/gf/dad/son that needs/wants a great gaming laptop.

need a laptop for drawing and light gaming

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 02:14 PM PST

been using a macbook for the past 5 years and I'm looking for something that can handle maybe a few more casual games! I apologize that I'm not very tech savvy but I'll do my best to fill out the form and stuff! thanks for helping!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: would prefer under $700 but will consider any suggestions! United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. not 100% sure what this question means sorry ;; I just need something for internet browsing, casual gaming, and running art applications. a good display is a must!

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? lighter and thinner is a plus! but it isn't as important as being able to run well

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac please!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. bigger is better but again it isn't as important as being able to run well! I am currently using a 1440 x 900 so it would be nice if it wasn't too much of a downgrade from that

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Clip Studio Paint, Photoshop Elements, Adobe Illustrator. also needs to work with a wacom tablet (which I think almost all laptops should? but just in case that's important!)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? the sims, emulators, casual games like minecraft and stardew valley. FPS doesn't have to be crazy and I don't need everything to be in super HD, I just want them to be playable!

    I7 + 1660ti or I5 + 2060? MSI or HP or LENOVO or ASUS?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 12:48 AM PST

I need a desktop replacement for casual gaming but mostly for office work. What should I choose from those two combinations? The price different doesn't matters. And one more what brand should I try to go for? If I can. Thank you.

MBP 16 2,4 8-Core i9 upgrade or 32GB RAM upgrade for music production?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 04:18 AM PST

Hi guys, I've got the basic model MacBook Pro 16" / 2,6 GHz 6‑Core Intel Core i7 / 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD right now, but consider to return it and upgrade the CPU to the 2,4 GHz 8‑Core i9 instead of extra RAM. Can someone tell me what the data on my memory usage screen says? I've already used Google but I just don't get it ;) I guess that I'll never gonna reach that 32GB of RAM usage, right? I produce music and use FL Studio, Logic, Kontakt, Omnisphere and Maschine 2.0 the most, no orchestral sample libraries yet. Thanks a lot!

Looking for a gaming and 3D modelling laptop for 1500 EUR

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 03:40 AM PST

Hey, guys! I was told that this would be a great place for laptop suggestions. I have attached the form below, but I have also added some extra information all the way at the bottom. I'm a bit stuck as I've never bought a gaming laptop before, so your help would be amazing. You would really help a girl out!

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Germany, Switzerland. Budget of 1500 EUR. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specifications for the money are the most important for me. A good battery is welcome, but it shouldn't come at the cost of performance. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** The lighter and thinner, the better. Preferably, I do not want ti to look like a "gamer" laptop. As discreet and simple as possible. RGB lights are ok, but not great. OK if they can be turned off. HOWEVER, NONE OF THIS SHOULD COME AT A SACRIFICE OF PERFORMANCE. Performance is priority. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows 10 (Home, professional... All the same.) * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Ideally a 15 inch laptop. 120 HZ. 1080P. I will definitely not pick anything with less than 120 hz or more than 1080p screen reso. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Vectorworks, Archicad, Photoshop, Lumion, Rhino/Grasshopper, SKetchup. Games (see below) NOTE THAT ALL OF THIS IS USED DAILY FOR MY PROFESSION, SO I DO NEED IT TO RUN WELL. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Between 80 to 120 fps on high to ultra settings (game dependent, ofc) Games: Insurgency: Sandstorm, Sniper Elite 4, 7 days to die, Civilization V, The Forest, Dead Rising 3, Squad... You get the idea.

    OTHER ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

I have done some research and I think the following would fit well:

GPU: GTX 1070... Should fit quite well with my needs.

RAM: 16 GB. Should I ugprade to a higher number due to the programs I use?

Memory: HDD 1TB, SSD around 256. Just need my OS, a few programs and a game or two.

CPU: i7-8750H. I figured this one would go well with my GPU, but do you think it's a bottle neck? Should I get something better due to the programs that I use on the daily?

Monitor: 120 hz, 1080p, 15 inch (or above, preferably 15)

Keyboard: No specific requests. Something that's reasonably comfortable to use, as I don't have a separate keyboard.

Again, your help is sincerely appreciated. Let me know if you have any questios. I'll quickly answer. :)

Looking for a gaming laptop for 2D animation, music composition, and casual gaming

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 09:21 PM PST

I'm currently a freshman in art school, majoring in animation and minoring in music composition! I prefer 2D frame-by-frame animation, so I most likely won't be doing much 3D modeling. I'm going to be moving around a lot between my house and dorm, so I want a laptop rather than a PC since it'll be easier to transport.

Also, this isn't a requirement by any means, but I really like the look of a RGB keyboard! :)

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\*

$1500 at most, but preferably closer to $1000-1200. I live in the U.S.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

Best specifications; I'll most likely have it plugged in the majority of the time. The main thing is that I'm looking for something with at least 16GB RAM.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

I want something light and easy to carry in a backpack/laptop carrying case, but the thickness isn't a big deal

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    15.6"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

Paint Tool Sai, Krita, Photoshop, Toon Boom, Autodesk, Musescore, Sibelius

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

Overwatch and Slime Rancher. Other than that, the games I like don't require very high specs. Idk much about what a good FPS is, so I just want the games to run smoothly at a high quality.

Thanks in advance for anyone who has a recommendation!

[<$800] [US] Want to upgrade to a desktop

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 01:00 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

    $800-ish, US

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

No loud fans (my current laptop [HP Pavilion x360] is so loud sometimes that it drives me insane)

    High reliability

    Great graphics

    Plenty of space

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't necessarily have requirements for this, as it would just be on my desk.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Current laptop is 15.6", so maybe a little bigger? I would also prefer to have two monitors, so both would need to fit on an average-sized desk.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming & possibly Twitch streaming/Youtube filming.

A lot of frequent Internet browsing as well.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly Sims & Toontown Rewritten, also Red Dead online

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I hear 60+ FPS is ideal for these games.

I'd like it to be really reliable & last a long time. The last desktop I had lasted maybe 2 years, which was a bummer.

Again, I'd like it to not be "loud" while I'm using it. I want it to be able to handle what I'm doing.

Plenty of storage/memory is a must, since I would be running a lot of Sims on it.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

While I love having a laptop for school (I'm in college currently), I find that running literally anything on it that's not school-related is a huge task & pain. It also seems to really run down my laptop. I can only have one game on it at a time, which is a pain having to choose between what game I'd rather have, what with installing & uninstalling. It's great for schoolwork, but I want to be able to game/stream/record, & it's just not built to handle that with everything else I do. I would also do schoolwork on the desktop (possibly) from time to time, but it would mostly be for everything else I'd like to do that I can't on my current setup.

Need a laptop with backlit keyboard

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 11:24 PM PST

My uncle has a laptop that barely runs and it is so sad to see this is what he thinks is high tech. I need some suggestions for the cheapest laptops that have a backlit keyboard so it's easier for him to see. System requirements don't matter as anything today will be faster than what he has. I just really want to find him something for Christmas. Thanks

    Surface alternative

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:17 PM PST

Hello, all. I've been wanting a surface for a long time but it's just never in the cards for me financially due to medical bills. I want it for my digital art work, streaming Netflix, and writing. Are there any alternatives to this that are good, but cheaper, and do the same thing?

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen and stylus for digital art creation. Keyboard ideally.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like something with a good processor that also has a large enough memory to hold photos and such.

Total budget and country of purchase: USA. Ideally I'd like to try to do monthly payments for one. Otherwise, 450 if that.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1. Great battery life. Good graphics

How important is weight and thinness to you? important. Due to back problems I would like something light

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ideally 13 or above

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe programs like Photoshop and procreate. I'd like to at least be able to run the Sims 4.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm not very tech savvy but something that will run games like the Sims and second life.

Are there any laptops that are still made with actual left and right buttons on the touchpad?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 01:27 PM PST

I absolutely hate the trend where the touchpad is treated as one big surface and you have to click the corners of the pad to left/right click, do they still make laptops with physical left/right click buttons like below the touchpad or something?
    Preferably a gaming laptop

Wanting a 2 in 1 laptop but quite unsure need some help to decide. And not sure if the zenbook flip that's on amazon is a 2 in 1.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 10:01 PM PST

Hey guys do you know if this vivobook flip is a 2 in 1? https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07RZFQ5HG/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza They have a really good deal on it and it seems like a steal.

Also I'm going to college for comp sci(in CANADA). I want a laptop that has decent processing power, preferably around 512 gb ssd, at least 8 gb ram, and convenient portability(13 in or 14 in preferably). I don't care much for any specifications for gaming but enough to help me in my comp sci classes such compiling, running programs, etc. My budget is between 600-1500 dollars $1600 is kinda pushing it. I did some research and this is what I found:

    The lenovo flex 14: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07XH9Q6H8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&psc=1

The lenovo flex 14(on sale): https://www.amazon.ca/Lenovo-Convertible-Touchscreen-Processor-81SS000DUS/dp/B07TWHYTSQ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=lenovo+flex&qid=1576301996&s=electronics&sr=1-3

HP spectre/envy 360: Found out they were good but had wobbly screens and heat problems. Don't know if that might be too annoying for me. ( seems a bit somewhat pricey though for what I want)

Surface book: Nice design but extremely pricey for even a 256 gb sdd and a 8gb ram.

Chromebooks: Didn't interest me but if you got any recommendations I'll look into it

Dell xps 13/15L: This one looks really interesting with a nice design, good power, but I heard it isn't reliable and could potentially last you only a year or two.

Dell inspirion 14 5000 2 in 1: Looks really nice

Any of the links above worth it? You guys got any better recommendations for 2 in 1's that fits into my budget? THX!

Is it possible to find a laptop that works well for both gaming and the Adobe creative suite?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 06:12 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** I'm working with around $1000-$1500 but I can go higher. I'm buying from the USA.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I'd go with the best specs money can buy.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Weight is largely a nonissue; my current laptop is a 2012 MacBook Pro and I'm used to lugging it everywhere by now.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Preferred OS would be Windows.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** I'd say 15-17 inches would be what I'm aiming for, maybe a little larger.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I want to do more Blender modeling, working with the Adobe creative suite, and I intend on running stuff like Borderlands 3 and Hollow Knight.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I want to run Borderlands 3, Hollow Knight, and Sundered around at least medium but preferably high settings and 60 FPS minimum with no slowdown.

EDIT: Didn't fill in the form when I submitted; fixed it.

    Laptop for a Computational Physicist

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 09:02 PM PST

Hi I'm a grad student currently taking up physics and my field is centered around computational calculations on complex systems. I am in the market for a new laptop as my old one can't keep up anymore (bye, my old friend) .

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I am from the Philippines and I can spend around 120k-150k Php or in 2300 - 3000 US dollars

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Of course I prefer the best specs for the money and battery life (6-8 hrs would suffice).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It would be so great if it would weigh less than 2kg (4.4lbs) since I would carry it around school. Thinness not as much as an issue with the weight.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I prefer Windows but I'm currently planning to dual boot it with Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I feel like 15" laptops are just the right taste for me (not that big as a 17" and not that small like a 13")

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I only do coding mostly in python and matlab. I also game as a hobby.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I do casually play games namely Dota, the Tomb Raider series, Assassin's Creed series, Dark Knight, Resident Evil (reboots) and some critically acclaimed indie games. Moderate to high settings, depending on the most playable FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would prefer a dependable build quality since I'm planning to use it as long as it can. Good key travel is also a plus for me.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion I am pondering whether the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 would be perfect for me. It has been a dream for me to own a thinkpad (because of their longevity and quality). Also, I prefer a laptop with a sleek design. I don't want my laptop to scream gamer with their LED lights coz I'm subtle that way hahaha. Thanks!

But before buying it, I want to know what the general thoughts about the laptop?

    Was it worth the money?

What's the good and bad about this laptop?

    600-700NZD budget, gaming laptop

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 08:03 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: New Zealand, 600$ or could stretch to $700 but if not possible at all around that price please suggest something next up

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not fussed

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not fussed

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Whichever gives best specs for the price range

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, best gaming experience for the budget, don't play hugely taxing games but would like the option if possible, maybe Fortnite, Minecraft, Left 4 Dead, Rocket league, Skyrim etc

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above.

    • Cheers!

    thoughts on Eluktronics MAG-15

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 12:25 PM PST

I need something with a 144hz screen, 15', light/portable enough to take to class for note taking, with a decent battery to get through a few lectures (4 hours ish).

I originally was thinking Blade 15, but I've seen a few MAG-15 videos and seem sold on it. Would a 1660ti or 2070 Max-Q be better if price did not matter at all? I wouldn't need the performance of the 2070, but I would like to be able to hold onto this laptop for 3-4 years.

Laptop rec for light gaming, MS office

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:44 PM PST

I'm looking to finally replace my old HP Pavilion dv6 laptop for home use, which has treated me well but is overdue for the scrap heap. I have a small Dell laptop exclusive for work, so the new one shouldn't ever leave home. It will be used for various Steam games and as a backup for work (mostly Outlook, Word, and Excel).

The Eluktronics Mech-15 looks like it might fit the bill, but I don't know much about the company. I've also looked at the HP Omen series, but I'm worried about cooling. Any insight or other suggestions would certainly be appreciated.

Total budget and country of purchase:

    Around $1500 USD

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best buy for the money. Battery life is not a major concern as I will be plugged in most of the time

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Somewhat important, I don't want some big bulky thing that won't fit in a travel bag

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15" preferred

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Various Steam games, mainly single player tycoon/sim type

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

None specifically, don't have to be at max settings but med/high without issue would be great

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Decent cooling! My biggest gripe I've had with HPs is the constant struggle to keep the temp down. I don't mind using a cooling pad/fan, but I shouldn't have to without the system overheating.

Backlit keyboard a must, touchscreen would be nice but not required. No godawful "shortcut" keys, like the one on my current system that opens Outlook and is located next to my escape button.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Since this will be a backup for work and may at some point need to go with me to the office, I'd prefer something that looks like a normal laptop, not a spaceship. Minimal bloatware would also be nice. My current system has lasted nearly a decade (with some investment/upgrades), I'd like the next one to do the same.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Looking to get a new comp really just for quickbooks and the internet

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:01 PM PST

So I currently have a Lenovo thinkpad that's 4-5years old. Touch screen, moderate amount of bells and whistles.

I own a small, 1-man company and I do my invoicing on it and email customers. The computer is slow af and I'm looking to get a new computer. The one I have doesn't have a SSD, I want my next one to have that for sure. I generally do a decent amount of research before I make purchases, but I figured I'd stop here first to make get some ideas on where to start. Don't have a firm upper number for my budget, but I feel like I should be able to find something for less than $1,000. But I'm open to whatever if someone has the ideal laptop for my needs.

Def need enough memory for Quickbooks. I also save a fair amount of reports (for my 1 person business). Probably dont need 1TB.

Edit: would like 14"+ screen, Windows

    Should I?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 06:58 PM PST

I need a laptop for coding.

I enjoy Apple's interface and I have other Apple devices so it's ideal to have everything linked together, but I don't mind leaving the Apple Ecosystem for something much better in regards to capabilities and what not.

I can buy a 13" MacBook pro (2.4 GHz version, 256GB Storage Touch Bar and Touch ID) which usually sells for $1,7999.00 for $1,000 from a friend or I can do more research and get something else that may be better for my buck, as my friends have suggested

Saving $700 also seems very ideal, but I'll still be spending $1000 in which I can get something better in that price range

What do you guys recommend? Should I but the MacBook from my friend or should I shop around for something better in the $1,000 price range?

Looking a machine capable of video editing and moderate gaming (Budget: approx. $2,000

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 12:51 PM PST

Hey y'all. I'm looking for a machine capable of doing some fairly hefty video editing in premiere Pro and after effects without slowing down. I'd like to have relatively fast render times and not experience slowdown while editing. As it will also be my general use comp, it'd be awesome if it could handle some moderate gaming as well. RN I'm looking at the XPS 15. Thoughts? Thanks in advance! Here's the questionnaire: * Total budget and country of purchase:

    U.S. 2,000-2,300

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specifications for the money. Edge towards build quality and battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Unimportant

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Alright with either windows or osx

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15-17"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Primarily video editing. Some 3d modeling and gaming

Adobe After Effects, Premiere, and Photoshop

    AutoDesk MAYA

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly indy and older games, but there are some more intensive games i'd maybe try

ie: Mount and blade, Dwarf fortress, star citizen if possible.

Looking for a Macbook replacement for my girlfriend. Light gaming and general use [15-16"][$600][US]

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 12:24 PM PST

Girlfriend's 2011 macbook finally kicked the bucket.

We'd like to get her a replacement, preferably something as close to the macbook feel as possible (gameplan was to upload Linux Cinnamon or mojave and modify it to look like the mac dock/desktop).

She likes to play minecraft, stardew valley, skyrim, etc... I don't think we need a beast of a machine, just something that is reliably fast and can do mid-tier gaming if possible. Trying to say in the $600 range if possible.

EDIT : added the questionaire from the side bar

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      -~$600, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
SSD preferred, decent RAM size, good battery life and some mid-tier games

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      4/10 for importance

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
Doesn't matter. MacOS is preferred but I can find a workaround

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15" is preffered.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming and general purpose mostly (such as connecting to work stuff):

      • Skyrim
      • Minecraft
      • Stardew Valley
      • Red Dead II (if possible)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
FPS somewhat matters. See games above.

I'm not trying to play that high intensity games, mostly League of Legends or Witcher 3 on medium to low settings. Thank you!

    14" laptop, touchpad+buttons+Synaptics, i5 gen 8-10, 8-16GB RAM, 265GB SSD or 512GB HDD

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 05:58 PM PST

    Hello,

I've tried other forums, but a colleague suggested Reddit. He suggested a computer builder forum, but I don't know too many people who build their own laptops.

My requirements are as follows, with the most constraining requirements at the bottom. Thanks for any anecdotes on qualifying laptops with good touchpad registration & tracking.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget: $500-$1500. Country: Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer not having 2 in 1. I have no battery life preference. I have no particular wish for best specifications for money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Light weight and thinness are bonuses, but not the driving considerations.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 64-bit (home or pro, but not "S")

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I want 14 inches, but this narrows options considerably. I am willing to live with 13.3" or 17" if necessary.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      • No CAD, video editing or gaming
      • Just video watching (youtube, netflix) and very rare use of Inkscape.
      • I use Microsoft Office (Powerpoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, Access on occassion.
      • I also run Cygwin utilities: X-windows, xterm, xpdf, gvim, bash, ImageMagick utilities, convert, pdftk, pdflatex, psnup, octave (including plotting & 3D graphs).
      • On Windows, I run Acrobat, FoxIt, Anaconda, Spyder, Python 3 (no big data or high performance computing), FireFox, Internet Explorer, Chrome.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming.

    • Performance: I wish to future-proof for 8 years. CPU: i5 generation 8-10. RAM: 8-16GB (prefer more). 256GB SSD or 512GB HDD. (I hear that AMD is killing it in the desktop market, but is struggling in laptops due to thermal clock throttling.)

    • Brand: Anything but Lenovo.

    • The hardest requirement: Keyboard, touchpad, buttons, Synaptics.

      • The need: In X-windows, and even in Windows apps, I rely on middle button click-and-drag. Windows 10's gestures only support click via tap.
      • Solution: Synaptics allows me to program the left button as a middle button, then use only the touchpad for all left button actions ("Tap again and hold to drag" and "Locking Drags"). The manufacturer must make available online a customization of Synaptics for the laptop model in question.
      • Unacceptable: Having to carry around a wireless mouse is not an acceptable work-around. A 1-piece clickpad is unacceptable as the pointer moves when I reach down to click the corners.
      • Touchpad registration/tracking: Seeking good registration of touchpad contact (no phantom clicks) and good pointer tracking so that I don't disastorously click on the wrong things when working quickly. As an example, the HP Pro x2 612 G1 has sloppy tracking, while Toshiba Satellite A660 and Portege R930 have acceptable tracking. (Apparently, Toshiba is also most likely to make laptops with touchpad+buttons)
    • Search strategies that don't work

      • Finding candidate laptops online, then trying to find them in real stores for a test drive.
      • Finding laptops in real stores with touchpad+button -- all too low end
      • Trialing laptops by buying and returning
    • Current strategy: Rely on anecdotes of good touchpads on qualifying laptops in Reddit, buying one, and crossing my fingers.
