4 year old 2015 MacBook Pro or brand new 2015 MacBook Air? Posted: 26 Dec 2019 08:53 PM PST I have had my 2015 MacBook Pro for about 4 years now. My Dad has bought me a brand new 2015 MacBook Air for Christmas. I don't know much about computers and computer parts, but I do know that the Pro has a 2.7 GHz Dual Core Intel i5 and the Air has a 1.5GHz Dual Core i5. I also know that the Pro has a better display and screen resolution. I use the MacBook for a lot of things as a college student, like homework and Youtube, but I mostly grind OldSchool Runescape for many hours a day. I know Macs aren't great gaming computers, but I enjoy the MacOS and only play OSRS and occasionally stuff like Minecraft and TFT with friends. I don't really know how big of a difference the CPU and display changes will be, but the MacBook Pro runs all the games I do play very slow and laggy at low settings. Would the 2015 Air be able to run these games as good as the 2015 Pro? Would the Pro slowly deteriorate after a couple more years (processing power, battery life, etc.)? Is there really much of a difference at all? I plan to give my Dad whichever computer I don't end up using since he has been using my brother's old 2013 MacBook occasionally for when he travels for work. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Dec 2019 09:39 PM PST I have had my current laptop (Dell Inspiron) for ~3 years and it is time for a replacement. I would like to make my purchase before December 31st for tax reasons. I narrowed my search down to three machines. I have always been a Windows user, but I am interested in OS X for its (perceived) simplicity and longevity. Even the "clean" install of Windows has a bunch of apps I don't like, and I hate how programs randomly save things in different sub-folders. It seems like OS X provides a more minimalistic environment. I have also heard that Mac hardware lasts longer. I am tired of replacing my PC laptop every 3-4 years (battery always seems to go bad after 1-2 years, machine starts performing slower after any usage, etc.). Ideally my next machine will function well at the 5-year mark. That said, I am open to sticking with a Windows PC -- sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don't. THE USAGE:
THE CONTENDERS: [1] MacBook Pro 16" (2019) - NEW
[2] Dell XPS 7590 15" (2019) - REFURBISHED
[3] Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme 15.6" (unsure, probably 2017-2018) - REFURBISHED
THE QUESTIONS:
My considerations are weighted something like this: (1) functionality and experience - 50% (2) value (longevity / price) - 40% (3) form and style - 10% [link] [comments] |

Gaming Laptop for someone who doesn’t know anything about hardware Posted: 26 Dec 2019 08:11 PM PST I've tried doing my research about laptops, and the more I read, the more confusing it gets, so I decided to come here. I guess everyone wants this, but I'm looking for something that: has nice, somewhat realistic graphics won't lag into oblivion playing an open world game like Just Cause Won't burn the table or whatever surface it's sitting on I have around a $2000 budget, and I'm aware of brands like RoG, Alienware, Omen, and Razer, but I have no idea where to start. I like the look of Razer laptops, but I've heard some bad things about the lifespan of those computers. My friend has an Alienware, and he says it works well for the first year, then it gets really slow, and he can't even play anything on it anymore. Omens seem very weak with their graphics comparatively, and I haven't heard much about RoG. I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, and I know everyone looks for this kind of computer, so I'm not sure if my parameters are of much help, sorry about that too. Thank you for any help or suggestions! [link] [comments] |
Small laptop for video editing Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:54 AM PST I need a small laptop (smaller than 13" if possible) that I can easily take it out with me and powerful enough to have video editing programs on it and works smooth. My budget is around $1000. [link] [comments] |
LAptop for creating content, coding, and maybe some gaming. Posted: 26 Dec 2019 10:00 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: 1200 plus extra for warranty. US. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not a fan of 2 in 1, but if the price is right ill go for it. good battery would be nice and bang for buck would also be nice. How important is weight and thinness to you? Anything below 5 pounds would be nice. Thinness is also preferred, but not necessary. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 and below. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I would like to video-edit on it, whether that's Sony Vegas or Premiere. Also be able to use photoshop and aftereffects. I plan to use it for coding as well in the future. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? If it could play counter strike, fortnite, and overwatch at the lowest settings and still hit 150 fps or better, that would be nice. I still aim to use this computer more as a workstation than for gaming as I already have a desktop. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Id like it to have a good keyboard. 16 GB of RAM is something that I want for sure. I wouuld also like the computer have both an SSD, of 256 or 512 GB, and a HDD, of 1 TB or bigger. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. RAM size is the most important. If the computer does a good job in creating content, i would find that better than being able to run games at a high enough FPS as I already have a desktop at home. Any responses would be appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Student looking for a new laptop Posted: 27 Dec 2019 03:57 AM PST I'm a student that needs a new laptop for School after my old broke down due to various hardware issues, I am mainly looking for a device that is able to reliably to fulfil all of my work and minor gaming needs effectively over a good period of time, though I'm also considering to either get a higher end laptop or a decent desktop for the purposes of playing some higher end games I'm interested in, a desktop being mainly considered because higher end laptops aimed at gaming tend to have their effectiveness compromised overtime which I want to avoid. Total budget and country of purchase: Australia, I have about a budget of $2000ish I could spend on the laptop. But I'm potentially looking to buy a desktop under the same budget. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't particularly care for a 2:1 factor, though I would like something that has a good battery life. How important is weight and thinness to you? I want something that's not overly cumbersome to carry and isn't too obstructive towards the use of other objects on a desk or other workspaces. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'm not particularly picky about screen size, though I would prefer a larger screen size aslong as it doesn't compromise any other key factors of the laptop such as weight. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing particularly high-end except with a gaming exception that is expressed in the answer to the question below. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Ideally it would be nice to be able to play relatively high end games like Total War Warhammer 2 at the quality listed at the bottom of the post, but if it compromises the laptop's capabilities in the long term I'm probably just going to be playing mostly relatively low end games. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like something that doesn't suffer from a substantial lost of effectiveness over time like the Alienware laptops for example tend to suffer from, otherwise I mainly need a good keyboard but most other specific functions aren't required. Though if you would like to recommend them for a student you're definitely welcome to. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm considering buying a desktop for the purposes of playing any higher end games I'm interested in whilst simultaneously having a longer life than a laptop, I'm not a serious gamer by any means and simply would like to be able to run things like Total War Warhammer 2 at the very least with a 30-60 FPS at lowish-medium graphics. If it helps here are the recommend specs for the game as recommended by Steam OS: Windows 7 / 8 (8.1)/ 10 64Bit Processor: Intel®️ Core™️ i5-4570 3.20GHz Memory: 8 GB RAM Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 4GB | AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB u/1080p DirectX: Version 11 Storage: 60 GB available space Thank you in advance for your response! I need some help with choosing the right laptop for me Posted: 26 Dec 2019 12:29 PM PST Hello everyone ! My budget is between 400$ and 600$. This may be very unreasonable; therefore, sorry if it is. I would like to get a laptop that'll last me a long time, doesn't overheat easily, is durable, has good battery life, and is fairly good enough for gaming. I'm a college student and I'm willing to use it for my studies and work while also playing some games on it. Of course I did some research and found out that mx150 and 1050ti gpus are the only ones I can afford really. 1050ti is more expensive but it's the bare minimum to play most games. Is there such a laptop that's a good fit for me ? Thanks everyone for your help Total budget and country of purchase: between 400$ and 600$. Morocco. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. good battery life, durable, long lasting, preferrably doesn't overheat easily. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important but light weight and thin is preffered. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" and above if possible. No less than 14". Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Games that are playable with a 1050ti or mx150. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Medium to high hopefully. I found out that 1050ti is the cheapest one that does the job. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -fill here, remove dashes- [link] [comments] |
Laptop for coding and maybe light gaming. Posted: 27 Dec 2019 02:45 AM PST Total budget and country of purchase: ~1300 USD Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery would be nice. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not the main concern but certainly a plus. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Both Windows AND Linux (dual boot). Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably 17" but 15.6" is ok too. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly coding (main focus). Light gaming and sometimes Blender / Unity. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Medium settings are fine. I aim this computer more as a workstation than for gaming. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Minimum 12GB RAM, 16GB is better. I'd like to have a numeric keypad. I need both an SSD (256GB more or less) and a HDD (1TB or bigger) (7200rpm is a really nice plus). Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. RAM size and CPU power are the most important (i7 +8th gen). A very good GPU is not the main focus (any Nvidia will do I guess). Also I'd prefer an Asus or MSI. No HP and certainly no Acer nor Lenovo. Also Intel and Nvidia. No AMD/ Ryzen. Any responses would be appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Lenovo Thinkpad T450s vs Dell Latitude E5470 Posted: 27 Dec 2019 02:19 AM PST Im looking for a refurbrished laptop for college I found two interesting options within my budget: Thinkpad T450s: i5-5300u 8GB DDR3 256GB SSD FHD IPS screen for 330 USD Dell Latitude E5470 i5-6200u or 6300u 8GB DDR4 128GB SSD M.2 FHD IPS screen for 300 USD Both laptops are in good visual condition, I slightly prefer the T450s for it's keyboard as I've heard it's the best you can get in a laptop. help me choose a laptop for school/gaming Posted: 27 Dec 2019 02:16 AM PST i'm tossing up between 2 options right now: the macbook pro 1.4GHz quad-core processor Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz 256GB storage which goes for about AUD$2100 (with a student discount) or a Huawei Matebook 13 i7-8565U, 512GB SSD/8GB, MX150 which is on sale for the next week or 2 for AUD$1400 I do quite a lot of work for school having multiple tabs open at once and also writing a lot of essays. I also game, playing League of Legends almost everyday. There's a $700 price difference between the two and I'm not sure what to get. I prefer Mac OS for school and the convenience that it allows for my iPhone but i heard there was a possibility that LoL doesn't run on the new MacOS Catalina (no definitive evidence). The two laptops look similar too...let me know your thoughts. [link] [comments] |
I'd like help on choosing a new Laptop Posted: 26 Dec 2019 10:25 PM PST I'm looking for a laptop for mainstream and diverse use but also one that I can game with on moderate to high settings. I would also like a high refresh rate if it is possible, and a laptop that's built to last (of course if I take care of it well) I'd be willing to be flexible on the price.
Screen resolution: 1080 or more RAM: 16 GB Storage: 500 GB - 1 TB SSD Dedicated GPU with 4 GB memory or more Touch screen and 2 in 1 form factor aren't necessary but it's something nice to have. Case that looks discreet and doesn't "scream" gaming I'd like a pretty good to long lasting battery life

AMD vs Intel. Differences and Pros and Cons. Posted: 26 Dec 2019 08:30 PM PST Hello there humble folks of /r/SuggestALaptop So, I've been browsing for a laptop to buy for the past month and a half or so. Missed a Black Friday deal, and I fear I missed out. Anyhow! My question pertains to the age old AMD vs Intel topic, mobile processor edition. However, I'm just here to inquire only about the less spoke of differences between the two. I'm not asking about prices, gaming benchmarks, or clock speeds. Things like thunderbolt 3, and other lesser known differences between the two. Can anyone off insight or some resources to look into? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Help me choose a CAD $900-$1200 business laptop: ThinkPad T480s vs Latitude 7490 Posted: 26 Dec 2019 11:35 PM PST I am looking a conservative midrange business laptop. By conservative I mean not flashy and ideally all black. Something that doesn't scream state of the art or expensive to the public. I need an ethernet jack. I want a great typing experience. Budget is $900-1200 Canadian. The product must be available in Canada. So far I like the ThinkPad T480s and the Latitude 7490. The main drawback of the T480s is its poor 250 nit display. However, I personally do not need a great display. I have an external monitor at home and the laptop would primarily be for emails, excel, and browsing. Unfortunately the 7490 might not be available in Canada anymore. The 7400 is its successor and seems inferior (no ethernet jack) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Dec 2019 10:37 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: between $500-$600. I don't know much about computers so I'm willing to go up if necessary. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications. I would like a 2 in 1, that being said it is not necessary at all. How important is weight and thinness to you? no much though > 5 lb would be great Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14"+ Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be using Adobe CC. I would like to run inventor decently, but if it's not possible that's fine as anything demanding I'll use the computer lab for. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't game. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Hopefully, decent battery life, 500 gm memory, 12gb+ ram since those seem to be the basics ( or options that can be upgraded easily) & possibly a touch screen. I would like the extra features, but they would just be extra. I'd also like to add that I previously had a dell 15 3531 Inspiron that worked wonderfully even as a budget laptop with intel Celeron and 4gb. New asus vivobook 15, lenovo flex and thinkpads that I've tried out seem to crash fairly easily, Idk if it's because of adobe programs. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
