-2 in 1 preferred or ability to lay completely flat to doodle (plan to use for architecture modeling/rendering and illustrations). Battery life not super important.

-Would sacrifice weight/thinness in order to have a 2-in-1 with the ability to render and stay lower in cost-

Is the FHD screen on MSI Prestige 15 any good?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 10:50 PM PST

I'm worried the FHD screen on the prestige 15 will look subpar as it's matte and 1080p on a 15 inch laptop. I'm worried it'll be dim and grainy this was my experience with other matte screens. Is this the case or is it good?

Alternatives to MSI PS63? Wanting to broaden my options before making the buy!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:40 AM PST

Hey guys, basically i'm looking for a new laptop that can handle heavy Photoshop editing with no issues and some light gaming. Has to be relatively thin and light as I bring my laptop to school occasionally. Screen has to be 15 inch or under. My budget is set at $1000.

Was recommended the PS63 by MSI which is on sale at $900 and the specs looks really good, but I just thought I should broaden my options with a few more alternatives before making a purchase as I don't change laptops often.

    Please advise.

Laptop for school/watching tv shows (maybe some gaming). 4G support is a big plus. (Under $800)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 01:29 AM PST

Hello! I'm very grateful that I found this subreddit.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: EU. Max total budget is around 700-800 USD/euros, but I would be more comfortable with $650-700.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications, as battery life doesn't really matter that much to me.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I plan on dualbooting Windows 10 (for some gaming) and a Linux distro, but the distro I run usually never has any compatibility issues with laptops. I'd prefer a laptop that has great performance on Linux though, as I can just leave Windows and gaming behind if required.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The bigger the screen, the better, as I'm mostly going to use the laptop to watch movies and TV shows. Screen quality is also important.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No CAD, maybe will do some basic video editing with open-source software from time to time. Some gaming (if possible).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'd like to run some games such as the new Halo: MCC and CS:GO, but as long as it can run CS:GO, it would be enough for me. If no gaming is possible within this price-range, I'm fine with that too.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Integrated 4G support (or 5G, if that is already possible) is a really, really big plus, as I'm going to be in a place where that's going to be how I access the Internet the most. In fact, I'd rather have 4G support than being able to play games. As for the keyboard, I like RGB colors but that's a secondary requirement. Good screen quality and colors are also a plus. Also, if the laptop can endure 2-3 years of intense usage, then it would be perfect.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I really appreciate any kind of help. Even if you can't write more than a paragraph about your recommendation, or just put a link to a website, it would still be really helpful as I can just look it up. Thank you.

    What do you suggest?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:42 PM PST

    Laptop for girlfriend

I'm looking to buy a laptop for my girlfriend for her to play some games on. She plays sims 4 (with all the expansion/game packs plus custom content) and also wants to play planet coaster and planet zoo. I've looked at so many laptops but can't decide what would be best suited for this. She wouldn't be using it for much else - surfing the internet, watching Netflix and maybe using word etc occasionally. Ideally I'd like to spend less than £1000 if that's possible

    Thank you!

Deciding between the Lenovo Y740 15 and the Dell G7 17

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 03:18 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      £1000-£1500 UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Just looking for best specs as I will be mostly using it plugged in

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not important at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      17 inches would be ideal

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I would like it to run most modern games at a decent fps

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Rainbow six at 60+ fps@1080p as well as other e-sport games like CS:GO

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Is a 144hz screen worth getting if its 15 inch as opposed to a 60hz screen on the 17 inch laptop. That would be my deciding factor between these two. I've also heard that the dell g7 has thermal problems so i'd like to know how bad those are.

Need a laptop with a great display and a good battery for taking notes and writing essays!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:45 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: around €1000. Will be buying the product in the Netherlands.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and display are my priorities.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. I will be lugging this thing around with me very often, and would like it to be as lightweight as possible.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. no real preferrence. I mostly use Google drive for my notes and essays, and I'm pretty sure torrenting can be done on all of those. I'm curious to try out Linux, with that said.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12-14 inch. Ideally 13inch. I'm gonna be reading on this thing a lot, and so would like a very high quality screen as a result.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming or intense editing. Will be using the laptop primarily for reading pdfs in the library and for writing notes and essays, although with regards to the latter, I am more than happy to buy a keyboard for home use if the laptop's isn't too great. Looking for something quiet in terms of noise too.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nope.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want a good display, ideally better than FHD if there's something within my price range, and a good battery life. Sometimes I have classes for 6 hours straight and do not have access to a socket. Thus, a good keyboard would also be great, but that is of less importance than the first two requirements.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been thinking about either a ThinkPad because of the student discount, but the batter and display seem to be a bit of a let down, or a MacBook air, because it really kills in terms of battery and display. Peace and love, and thanks in advance.

Laptop for programming? (No gaming at all)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:36 AM PST

I'm going to college next month with computer programming as my course. I've struggled with gaming addiction so gaming performance is completely arbitary. Only thing I want to know is how much load and efficiency a laptop should have for programming, is it even a factor of hindrance in work or just a matter of lesser time taken? Don't wanna go too expensive or too cheap as a matter of fact to regret my buying choices.

Suggest a laptop for a someone in the US with a budget of under $1000.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 10:42 PM PST

Best specifications for the money is my first priority. 2 in 1 form factor is not important. A good battery life would be nice.

Weight and thinness is very important. I plan on using this while traveling out of a backpack. For an OS I like windows but I will probably also partition it to run Linux.

    Indifferent to screen size.

Only CAD I might potentially do is some basic circuit layout stuff. Might do a bit of video editing but not a lot. I am not big into gaming. I play some RTS games like civ but being able to run this well is not super important to me.

No specific requirements other than usb and hdmi drives (or some other way to connect to another monitor). This will be used for travel a lot where it'll be carried in a backpack and shoved in a plane so a good build is a must.

I do a lot of coding in programs like visual studio and visual studio code as well as other IDE's. I've been learning app development in my free time. I'm start a new research program working on machine learning in computer vision. I'll do this in python. I Do a lot of MATLAB. A computer that can handle all these coding programs and have enough processing power to not get bogged down is a must. I'm open to refurbished laptops. In summary the best I can get for my money that can handle the coding work I'm doing and be good for travel.

Long time lurker, first time poster

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:43 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** About $1500 USD *

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I'd prefer at least 4-6 hours of battery life. I don't want a 2 in one and would like the best specs I can get for my budget.*

**How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not too important, but the lighter the better. *

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows *

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Would prefer anywhere from 13 to 15.6 inches *

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run** I'm the kinda guy that leaves 50 web tabs open at once lol. Other than that I would like to stream alot of video to it but only play a few light games. I will also likely want to use it for video/photo editing in the future, and I'd also like to run FL studio.

*If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Only light flash games and maybe some minecraft, so intense settings or fps isn't too important. *

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Reliable build quality and good keyboard is preferable, but I don't want a touch screen and don't care if it has a fingerprint reader. I would prefer an optical drive if possible but I know that will probably limit my choices so its nonessential. I'd prefer at least 3 usb ports as well.*

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I'd like it to last around four years. I'd also prefer the fan to not take off like a helicopter whenever I'm streaming two things at once or have it heat up to surface of the sun temperatures like my last laptop lol. *

hi all,i need a suggestion for a cheap laptop good at gaming (i mean that it can run with a quite high definition easy games like LoL, Fortnite ecc...) looking on the internet i noticed that the most suggested are:

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 12:56 AM PST

    Acer Aspire 3 -1,

    Acer Aspire 3 A315-41-R4FG -1,

    HP 14-DK0001NL -1,

    HP 15-bw078nl -1,

    Lenovo Ideapad S145 -1,

Now i have a Sony Vaio bought in 2014, can you suggest me one laptop of these (or other better, if you know)? Thank you!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 550 more or less, Europe, Italy

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? i don't care too much about weight, it just don't have to weigh more than 2 kg

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. for the university i'll have to use some cad programmes but now i don't know what, the laptop should be able to run games like LoL, fortnite, rocket league...

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 50-60 fps at minimum, but with medium-high resolution

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? a normal keyboard

    Legion Y540 (RTX 2060 w/ 144Hz 300 nit display) vs Y740 (GTX 1660ti w(144Hz, G-Sync, 500 nit)

So given the opportunity to gets either at a similar price, would the downgrade to 1660ti be worth the g-sync feature?

    Workstation with a 4k OLED at 120hz or 144hz

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 12:18 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 6000 USD in the US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is preferable, don't need a crazy GPU as I'm not gaming or rendering.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It doesn't need to be super thin, but ideally less than an inch thick. As far as weight goes it could be 20lbs for all I care.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Ideally I want to run Linux with Coreboot bios, but I know coreboot support may be a stretch

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15in, but I'm not totally against 17in, I'd just need to get a new bag.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, although I will be running Altium designer with wine if I can, but if I can't get that to work I'll use some other EDA software that is comparable with Linux. Not very GPU intensive afaik.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? FTL and Into the Breach at 100+ fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and build quality, I'll be using a seprerate mouse so touchscreen and trackpad won't be used.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't want it to look like a crazy gaming laptop with rgb spewing out every
      orifice.

Student Laptop (CS Major) No gaming - Around $700

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:34 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around $600-700, can be flexible for a little more (or if there is something good for less that would be nice too); USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't really care about 2 in 1, but it could be nice. Good battery life is important as well as portability.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Lightness (like 4 lbs or less) and thinness is important because I want to be able to bring this to class or around to study and don't want to be lugging around a big laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches or less

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming. Just for studying, coding, etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nothing specific, just good quality parts and nothing horrible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I already brought a desktop to my dorm, so I just want a laptop that I can bring to class to take notes and to places like the library or the cafe to study and do homework. Don't want to be plugged in all the time. Thanks!

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 not required whatsoever, battery life somewhat important, good specs are the priority

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, laptop should ideally be small and portable, <2kg weight.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 inches, 16 is pushing it.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly some photo/video editing with photoshop/preimere, not needed for rendering/things like that.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? None

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would greatly prefer a non-clunky laptop that could be carried around easily. Minimal borders.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a XPS 13 9343 that I'm using as a stationary computer (the battery/keyboard are broken so it's not portable). Ideally, new lapotp would be similar in terms of design/size but doesn't have to have as good processing capabilities. Laptop will mainly be used for school/editing. Looked into a couple laptops, the Lenovo IdeaPad 330S and the Asus 15.6" VivoBook S but not sure if they'd be good. Not very experienced in purchasing laptops

MSI GL75 vs Dell G5 vs Acer Predator Helios for general and gaming use (US, $1100)

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:24 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1100, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money, decent battery life a plus

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Nice to have but nonessential

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-16"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'd like to be able to run modern games like Jedi: Fallen Order, possibly ArcGIS as well

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above, my current laptop is a mid-2012 MacBook Pro so pretty much anything is a step up.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm not overly concerned with most of these, but good/robust build quality is a plus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm mainly considering the laptops listed here, but I'm open to other options as well. My layman's opinion is that all three are pretty close in terms of specs, but I'm leaning towards the Dell due to the better graphics card, & the larger SSD vs the Acer.

    Need help deciding

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:22 PM PST

    Hello,

I've been dipping my toes in the water thinking of upgrading my laptop. Finally decided to pull the trigger today.

HP 15-DY1095OD today for the i7-1065G7 processor and 16 gb ram. It claims 10 hours of battery life, but I'm skeptical.

My second option was Lenovo Flex 14. $100 cheaper and I like the touch screen option, but the Ryzen 5 3500U and 12 gb ram are a bit of a downgrade. Also worried the battery life isn't as advertised.

I'm looking to use the laptop for some online classes and eventually programming. I may want to throw solid works on the computer too.

I'd appreciate any thoughts! Thank you.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Would like to stay around $600 in the USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I like the idea of a 2 in 1, but battery life over 6 hours > best specs for the money > 2 in 1

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would be nice to be thin and light, but up to 6 pounds is acceptable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm currently running Linux, but I'd prefer Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" for 2 in 1 -15.6" for standard laptop

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Possibly some CAD work, the main intent of the computer is for schoolwork

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't game.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality would be ideal

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Minimal bloatware on Windows. If I boot Ubuntu onto it, I'd want to do that at a later date.
