    Simple Questions - November 30, 2019

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I need help building a pc for my son.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 12:34 PM PST

My 11 year old son, has asked me if we could buy him a computer. I told him we couldn't afford it, because we just recently bought our house, instead of renting the past few years. It broke my heart to see him so sad, so I thought about it, and over the next 6 months, I'll be able to save up $400 and buy him a computer, the thing is though, we both know nothing about computers. That's why I'm here, my son recommended I use reddit. I asked him what it is, and he showed me. Because I'm his dad, we are sharing an account, so I can make sure it's safe what he is viewing. I did a little research online, but I'm still clueless about computers. He said he wanted to play Fortnite and Minecraft on his computer. I was hoping, you guys could recommend me what parts I should get for him. He's really excited and I want him to be happy. Thanks in advance. -David

TIFU by running my new build at subpar settings for months

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 08:55 AM PST

I built my first PC a few months ago, didn't realize that I had to enable XMP profile for my ram to run at the level it says on the box. Been running at 2/3 speed for months. Is there anything else that needs to be done post-build to get the most out of your computer? I just installed the OS didn't really mess around with anything else. I've heard about fan curves but is the default fine?

Very Modest (Read: Extreme Budget) Gaming PC for Christmas Gift

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 07:37 AM PST

    Hello,

I am looking to build a super budget gaming PC with my 10-year-old son for his Christmas gift this year. He is looking mostly to play Fortnite, Minecraft, ROBLOX, and other indie games he sees Youtubers play (Bigfoot, etc). I have been lurking here and watching all the "2019 budget PC" videos on YouTube, however, I could really use some help.

My budget is somewhere around $350 and the goal is just to get him into the world of PC gaming. He is currently a console gamer but has shown interest in PC gaming for a while now. It seems like AMD chips are the way to go for budget builds. I am torn between going with an APU for now with a better CPU that opens the path for adding a GPU later, or getting a cheaper CPU and getting the GPU now. Here is what I have come up with so far for an integrated build:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2400G 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Processor $119.00 @ Amazon
    Motherboard ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $69.99 @ Newegg
    Memory G.Skill Aegis 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $49.99 @ Newegg
    Storage Kingston A400 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $27.99 @ Amazon
Case Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MicroATX Mini Tower Case $44.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply EVGA BR 450 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply $35.98 @ Newegg
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total $347.94
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-11-30 10:34 EST-0500

Or I could go with a lesser CPU and get the GPU now with the plan to upgrade the CPU down the line? Here is the GPU build I have so far: You will notice that I had to lower the memory down to 8GB to get me closer to budget. This build is still over budget. I would probably also look for a used RX 570 on eBay to get the price down even more.

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 3 1200 3.1 GHz Quad-Core Processor $59.00 @ Amazon
    Motherboard ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $69.99 @ Newegg
    Memory Patriot Viper 4 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $39.99 @ Amazon
    Storage Kingston A400 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $27.99 @ Amazon
Video Card XFX Radeon RX 570 4 GB RS XXX Video Card $119.99 @ Amazon
Case Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MicroATX Mini Tower Case $44.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply EVGA 600 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply $34.99 @ Best Buy
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total $396.94
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-11-30 10:30 EST-0500

The other reason for the GPU build is that he really wants to play the game The Isle. He is really into dinosaurs and the game specs state that it won't run with integrated graphics.

    Thoughts? Help?

Thank you in advance for your time

With Cyber Monday coming, where should I shop online to get the best deals and avoid buying low quality parts?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 03:01 PM PST

Leading up to Black Friday I saw a lot of posts about companies who create low quality products specifically for the sale. Electronics was one of the most commonly mentioned devices to be careful. I understand that buying a pre-built computer could be bad, but do I still need to worry about that when buying individual parts? I'm looking to get some RAM for my laptop and a SSD to greatly increase performance.

    GPU Advice - 1440p 144hz gaming

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 11:15 AM PST

So I've upgraded my monitor - bought the LG LG 34GK950F as an upgrade from generic 60hz Samsung monitor(s). Resolution of the new monitor 3440 x 1440

Trouble is, I will definitely struggle to get 144FPS average with my current GPU, GTX 980. Rest of system is Ryzen 7 2700x, 16GB Ram.

What are recommendations for the upgrade, mainly Games like Destiny 2, Apex Legends, Diablo. Some future proofing also be good. Have been thinking RTX 270 Super, as thats at the top end of budget. I'm in UK if recommending any shops!

Upgrading from a HDD to a SSD without reinstalling Windows

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:52 PM PST

So I've tried searching around on this sub for ways to upgrade form a HDD to a SSD, but every single post just told me to reinstall Windows. However, I can't do that, since I've painstakingly customized my OS over time and have massive programs and files on it that I don't want to re-download since I have a very slow internet speed. So is there a way to simply keep every file the same, but just on a new drive?

Does clearing CMOS damagr the PC?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:51 PM PST

So last night i tried enabling XMP profiling, however this caused my monitor to be unable to receive a display. I researched the issue and realized that i had to clear CMOS. First i tried shorting the two CMOS pins with a screwdriver. Didnt work. Tried this multiple times, still didnt work.

Then today i tried reseating the motherboard battery. Monitor still didnt get a signal. Then i looked at my monitor plug and realized that i was plugging it into the motherboard this whole time, not the GPU. This implied to me that my first attempt at clearing CMOS did work but i was just plugging the monitor wrong.

My question after this predicament: does clearing CMOS damage anything in the PC? My dad told me to be careful as shorting the pins can affect the longevity of my components, and that it should only be used as a last resort. Now mind you, I tried to clear CMOS multiple times (shorting the two pins multiple times and reseated the battery once), so if my dad's logic is true then that'd mean that i fucked my shit up badly from shorting the pins like 5 times.

Dunno if this helps but i think i cleared CMOS correctly: disconnected everything from the PC, had everything turned off, etc..

Apparently one of the chips/transistors on the GPU caught fire when i booted the PC without plugging in its 6+8pin power connector. Don't know if it's toast, should i buy a new one.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 10:06 AM PST

GPU- Titan X Pascal PSU- Corsair 1000 Recently while playing Hitman the shut down unexpectedly, then would boot for a fraction then stop.

Hooking up an RTX 2080 and a GTX 970

    Motherboard: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MPG-X570-GAMING-EDGE-WIFI

    PSU: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Power-Supply-Units/Power-Supply-Units-Advanced/RMx-Series/p/CP-9020180-NA

I'm new to building so this could be a very obvious answer I'm not seeing. Lol

If you need more info, let me know. I'll take some pictures and give you a detailed setup.

Cyber Monday Ready Build for Cyberpunk 2077 and other Games

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 03:51 PM PST

I built my first PC about 7 years ago and it finally died over the summer, so this is my second build, but first time I'm on my own. My goal is to stay cheap (i'm trying not to go over 1,000$ but I will if necessary) but build something that will last for many years (i'd be happy if it lasted over the next 4 or 5 years). I'd like to be able to plan Cyberpunk 2077 when it comes out as well, not necessarily at ultra high settings, I'd be happy with medium - high settings. I'm planning on pulling the trigger on this build on Cyber Monday. Any tips or advice on deals would be appreciated.

Fan noise for an HTPC (with gaming capability)?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 03:27 PM PST

I am looking to build an HTPC primarily for my girlfriend, in a Node 202 case. This is my first small form factor PC. While I want it to be able to hold its own with games like Overwatch if the situation arises, she doesn't game at all so she'll just be watching TV/movies. She will be very annoyed if the machine is loud, because she's already resistant to adding any new device to the TV area.

My main question is: If I use a decently capable gaming video card like the MSI Gaming GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, is the fan noise going to be crazy even when she's just watching movies / TV? Or will it only crank up while doing substantial gaming (which is fine)?

How can I pursue my pc building interest?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 11:41 AM PST

About 3 years ago I got very interested in pc builds and I built my first one, which ended up being a terrible build that didn't work correctly. A year ago, a built a second one, with no help this time, and its a really good budget build that I'm very proud of. I love gaming but honestly the whole pc building experience is what has my attention right now. I would love to build tons of more pc's right now but I just don't have the money being a teenager. Does anybody have any tips on how I could still do activities with this newfound hobby? Also what kind of careers could I pursue out of high school to keep with PC building? Thanks for any responses!!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 03:27 PM PST

Disclaimer: I know absolutely nothing about PCs. I am switching over from console and I've used friends to put together this list. I am looking to spend between $500 and $1,000 for the PC including monitor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Ryzen cheap motherboard choice

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:44 PM PST

Which of these 2 cheap motherboards is better choice:

    • Asus Prime A320M-K
    • Gigabyte A320M-S2H

I would use it with Ryzen 3 1200, Zotac 1050 OC (factory oc) and HyperX Fury DDR4 8GB 2666MHz

I won't OC that CPU and that is why im going with cheap A320 boards instead of B450.

    Mid to High-End Photogrammetry build

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:39 PM PST

    https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/4pNtn7

I was told server + dual cpu's might be a better idea but I'm not going into that realm, also I understand their gaming cards but all things considered I'm hesitent to even pick RTX 2080s as they'd just inflate the price further for possibly not that much gained performance (I actually have a lot of patience and would be multitasking between machines anyways)- I could go to TITAN's but I'm not looking at going into the same amount of debt as I did when going to an overpriced animation college. So unless I'm really being crazy with my card choices and someone can justify realistically with CUDA cores in mind and high end Photogrammatry as the priority I think I'll stick with it. The 128 GB of RAM is what I've gathered from the testing done by Puget Systems in respects to working with up to 20,000 images per project.

I've picked the best parts that I feel most comfortable working with, while leaving the upgrade room open for at least another 4 or 5 years before who knows what next socket I may want to upgrade to. I also figure 128 GB of ram is enough to ensure it's a high end work station for up to and probably over a decade. This is the first time I've attempted to use PC part picker and build specifically a utility or workstation PC. While I'm sure it may see an occasional game, it's main life span will be dedicated to turning wattage into dollars. But the last time I built a PC was going to said animation college, a friend and I spent 4 or 5 nights designing a computer using what we read online in different articles and forum posts, seeing what was compatible and not. PC part picker is a blessing once you get into it, though I am sure theres a few incompatibility issues that have still fallen threw the cracks. Does anyone see any compatibility issues it may not have picked up with the build? Totally open to hear all about those potential issues.
