Posted: 29 Nov 2019 09:06 AM PST I've been on and off Linux for a while now and I've finally decided to fully migrate to Linux (still kinda new so I'm set on Ubuntu) One thing I always had though on all of my platforms, from phone to tablet to laptop, was the same browser. I loved that it was so portable and I really disliked Firefox when I first used it years ago. Always preffered the design and quality of using Chrome to Firefox. But after fixing some compatibility issues I received with Firefox (ex. Netflix not working - dw I fixed it) I realised how much better Firefox really is. I can HEAR a clear difference. When Chrome is running on my laptop I can hear the fan working way too much. But since I purged all of the Chrome files I ever had on the laptop, I've noticed a dramatic difference. My laptop on normal use hardly ever gets as loud as it used to. Do you guys use Firefox on your phone's? Do you think it matters as much as it matters on a laptop? Do you guys agree Chrome is as bad as my experience shows? [link] [comments] |

Unable to build polybar on fresh installation of Fedora 31 Posted: 29 Nov 2019 05:52 AM PST Fresh install of Fedora 31, only installed i3 and dmenu after setting the OS up. Now I'm following this guide to install polybar, but when trying to build it I get the following output: I am 100% sure that I installed all the requirements earlier in the guide. What's the issue? How to add a new first line with "#FASTA" to every file? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 09:03 AM PST I've appended lines to ends of files before, but I need to do the same for the beginning without deleting the original first line. How can I do this? The new line I would like to be added to >500 files is "#FASTA". [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2019 08:45 PM PST Hey all I've switched back and forth between Windows and Linux for years and want to mess with it again. How is Wine comparability these days? When I last tried to use it it was a pain in the butt. [link] [comments] |

Why does my screen go blank and not come back? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 08:14 AM PST Whenever I leave my laptop, even for only a few minutes, regardless of whether its plugged in or not, I come back and the screen is black but the laptop is still on. The mouse, keyboard, and power button do nothing and the only way to get back in is holding the power button and shutting down, then restarting. this isnt especially bad because ive got a very nice ssd but surely theres a way to change this? I've tried playing around with the power management settings and have had no luck. I'm on debian xfce. What do? [link] [comments] |

Which version should I use, and how can I get started? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:52 PM PST So, I have a laptop I've decided to install Linux onto, because it isn't working well, there's some stuff easier on Linux etc. etc etc. An example of the things I was wanting to do was to create a program to capture and log song and artist for a YouTube livestream. It would take a screenshot every minute or so, recognize the text, put it in a text file, and do it again, fairly simple for a first project, I hope. Let me clarify that I am NOT wanting to get Linux just for the purpose of this project. I am well aware that this could be done on Windows. This is merely a general example of the TYPES of things I want to do. I have little to no experience with computer programming, though my dad has some experience using it. Not enough to answer this question, but enough to help me a little along the way a little. He recommended not wiping the computer, instead going for leaving windows 8, and installing it as a second operating system. If it gives any idea of my experience, I never even thought of this as a possibility. What can you recommend for me, based of this hopefully coherent explanation? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Having trouble installing conky theme on Ubuntu. Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:43 PM PST I installed conky-manager and installed one basic theme which comes inbuilt to it and customised it a bit. But that I did after I was unsuccessful trying to download and install some of the themes through command line. There are not enough resources for noobs to install a conky theme through command line(atleast what I felt). Can someone guide me through this? I wanted to install conky rings revamped. Is it possible to use the Microsoft Office Web Apps offline? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:13 PM PST So I just stared using Linux (Fedora) but I really dislike Libre Office. On my search for alternatives I stumbled upon the Microsoft office web apps. Which feel super natural to me. Is there a way to maybe use them offline? Or is this a dump question because the "web" in web-app already suggests online usage :) [link] [comments] |
Should i swap to linux, if so what is the best option for it? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 12:59 PM PST Sorry if some questions are dumb, or have already been answered on this sub, as i dont have time reading all the forum posts and quick googling havent given a lot of info. I have some problems with windows 10 i have installed a year ago, and i would like to reinstall it or swap to linux, which would be a better option for me. Here are my specs(it is a laptop btw): CPU: Intel core i5 7300hq ; GPU: Nvidia gtx 1050ti ; Display: 60hz refresh rate,17 inches. RAM: 2400hz 16 gb ram. Memory: 1 Tb hdd + 128 SSD. I also have a spare external 750 gb hdd for testing. My main tasks i perform daily are mostly gaming, programming(C++ only right now), and browsing. My top 3 games are Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege, Apex Legends, and Factorio. I can trade any other game for transfering to linux, but not theese three. Can i run theese games on linux? Lutris website says that siege and apex are garbage because of anticheat blocking the linux clients. Can i still run them wia gpu passthrough? What about performance? Is it lower than running games on windows? I am studying CS in university for 2 years, the languages we are learning are C++, C#, and, possibly python in the future. What are good IDEs and extensions for them for theese languages? Which option would you consider to suit best for me: stay on windows, swap to linux, dual boot, or linux + windows VM with passthrough? And which distro should i be using? UPD: i have forgotten to say that i use some GPU memory overclocking when gaming using MSI afterburner. Are there any alternatives for afterburner for nvidia cards on linux? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2019 12:44 PM PST I have files with ending .gff (a genome annotation file format), and corresponding files with the same name but different ending .fasta (a sequence format). I need the contents of all the .fasta files to be appended to the .gff files. E.g. the contents of "a.fasta" into "a.gff", "b.fasta" into "b.gff", etc. How can I go about doing this? Total newbie: can't launch a new program Posted: 29 Nov 2019 08:45 AM PST Hi, I've just installed a program, but when I try to launch it: "./program" I get "Launching '. /program - - detach'..." and then nothing... What is the problem? Fedora 32 bit [link] [comments] |
Limited Connectivity after Update unless I use "dhclient" Posted: 29 Nov 2019 12:02 PM PST Good Afternoon All, Bear with me as I am a Linux noob, but I am trying to learn. I have Fedora 31 with KDE-Plasma installed. I did an update via the update arrow on the lower right corner. But then the entire computer hard locked, I let it set for 10 minutes with no difference before I held down the power button. After that everything seemed to work OK, but I had a yellow triangle next to my network settings, and no internet. Things I have tried ifconfig text: Any thoughts on how I can repair this? Thanks! :) [link] [comments] |

Big noob question: Do ALL command line programs need a configuration file? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:48 AM PST I'm running Termux on my Android phone and I'm trying to get gallery-dl to work on it. I managed to get youtube-dl to run but only because I used a guide to install it on Termux specifically. [link] [comments] |

update multiple Debian systems to buster Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:21 AM PST I have three systems running stretch and a limited data plan. Is there a way to download the install file once onto a USB and update the multiple systems? Don't want to download 3 gigs three times for each system. Creating a bootable buster USB will that work? or is it only for fresh installs? [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu freezes, also error messages on start up Posted: 29 Nov 2019 10:53 AM PST About once a week, Ubuntu freezes on me, and I have to do a hard reset. Today I was playing a game online, and it happened like three times in a row. So I'm thinking it's something to do with the graphics card maybe. I have a HP ENVY 360, this is my system spec according to screenfetch: OS: Ubuntu 18.04 bionic Kernel: x86_64 Linux 4.19.13-041913-generic Uptime: 27m Packages: 2564 Shell: bash 4.4.20 Resolution: 3840x1080 DE: GNOME WM: GNOME Shell WM Theme: Adwaita GTK Theme: Ambiance [GTK2/3] Icon Theme: ubuntu-mono-dark Font: Ubuntu 11 CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx @ 8x 2GHz [53.0°C] GPU: AMD/ATI Raven Ridge [Radeon Vega Series / Radeon Vega Mobile Series], AMD RAM: 2881MiB / 6984MiB I also get weird error when the system is booting. One screen says a load of Clearing orphaned inode messages, and unable to write to IOMMU counter, and unknown sensor type. Then another screen gives a load of ACPI Error, method parse/execution failed lines. First of all where are these boot logs stored? I've googled ubuntu boot logs and looked in the common places, but I can't see these messages in there. Any ideas how to fix it? [link] [comments] |

How would I best approach in-home streaming/remote graphical desktop with Linux? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 09:51 AM PST I have my main rig and an old laptop I still use for casual browsing/light usage when I'm not in the mood to sit in my desk just to read stuff. I just moved my main rig from my bedroom to another room nearby (which I call the "office") due to some space issues, but the laptop remains in my bedroom. So I just thought of actually streaming my desktop straight to my laptop, e.g. when I'm in my bed and want to play some games at night, or perhaps do some side work if I feel like it, without having to go to the office just for that. I'm already used to Linux and everything, but I'm a complete noob regarding streaming/remote anything. I'm aware of the existence of some programs like Remmina, but I dunno which one would be a best fit for what I want. I don't mean something like Steam Link, especially because the laptop is pretty old by today's standards. I don't really want to install Steam again in it so I can keep it lightweight, plus I plan on not just playing games after all. I mean something sort of like SSH but with video/audio output instead of just the CLI. It could even be a CLI program, I'm fine with that, I just need some guidance. [link] [comments] |

Installing wifi drivers on fedora server. Posted: 29 Nov 2019 08:22 AM PST I installed fedora server on my PC and I want to install a WM, but nmcli doesn't have the wifi plugin installed. I could move my computer to the router and install the drivers that way, but I just cable-managed my desk yesterday and I was wondering if there was a way to install the plugin without moving it.
