Can't get rid “WARNING: POSSIBLE DNS SPOOFING DETECTED!” Message When Connecting via SSH

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:44 AM PST

I've been directed to edit the known_hosts file on my Mac but I cannot locate that file. Have tried everything even looking for hidden files.

I've looked at both of thee links:

    https://medium.com/@segunadeleye/getting-rid-of-the-warning-possible-dns-spoofing-detected-message-when-connecting-via-ssh-6dddeb59c102

    and

    https://support.cloud.engineyard.com/hc/en-us/articles/205404668-Warning-message-DNS-SPOOFING-DETECTED-when-SSHing-into-instances

They both say what needs to be edited but I can't find the file.

Any ideas? I'm dying to fix this so I can go on to learn more about using ssh.

    Thahnks.

Using LVM to combine two hard drives

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:58 AM PST

I have a computer with two hard drives (75 and 120 GB). I am trying to install LVM in order to make "one big drive". I installed lubuntu 19.10 (notice the l) on the 120 GB drive (/dev/sdb1) and tried to use this tutorial (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-use-lvm-to-manage-storage-devices-on-ubuntu-18-04) to combine it with the other drive (/dev/sda1). However, it seems that I cant combine them because I already installed lubuntu. How can I combine these two disks?

Is it necessary to scan files (docs, pics, and music) recovered from an old Windows Vista computer before moving them to linux?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 01:49 PM PST

For context, my mom's Vista computer was exactly what you would inspect from a Windows computer that old. She expressed the need for a new computer, and only really browses the internet, listens to music, and does some spreadsheets and word processing. I set her up with an RPi4 and recovered some of her files from her old hard drive using my laptop (Manjaro) and a hard drive dock, and placed them on a USB stick. So before I let her move those files, would it be necessary to scan them to make sure that they, too, are not infected and what tool(s) should I use to do it?

How do i EXACTLY make my mouse pointer speed the same as it is on windows to Linux?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 01:38 PM PST

Ive been looking at alot of forums, and guides on this, but ive really not gotten an answer to this question.

Im looking to make my mouse pointer speed the default windows speed witch is the 6th line on this grid

    https://preview.redd.it/z2or32h79i041.png?width=414&format=png&auto=webp&s=924f5b43700b671b88616d47fd8e46b7506b4578

Is this possible to do, or is linux completeley different when it comes to speed? Is their any emulation tool or something? Because its the only thing thats really holding me back from gaming on Linux.

    Laptop Advice - Ubuntu

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:35 AM PST

Need a hand in network troubleshooting.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 10:44 AM PST

    Greetings, r/linux4noobs.

Before anything, I'm sorry if my wording is vague and I don't provide enough info to work with. My knowledge regarding this topic is very basic. Be sure to tell me if I need to post the output of some commands that could help resolving the issue.

Some info about my setup (if that helps):

    OS: Debian Stable

    Wi-Fi card: Intel Corporation Wireless 8265 / 8275 (rev 78) with firmware-iwlwifi installed (20190717-2~bpo10+1)

    Kernel version: 5.2 from buster-backports (Linux debian 5.2.0-0.bpo.3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.2.17-1~bpo10+1 (2019-09-30) x86_64 GNU/Linux)

Router: ASUS RT-N12VP (firmware version: 3.0.0.4.374_880-g3b4ce53)

The symptoms of this problem are rather unusual, I wasn't able to find anything like that on the net. In short, my internet sometimes fails to establish full connection when needed (for example, Wikipedia doesn't load images most of the time even though it should, which results in my browsers continuously trying to load them until the connection times out). This also applies to my Steam client not connecting after logging in and Discord failing to load some UI elements and send messages. Some other websites load perfectly fine, however, which is something I can't understand.

Here are some things to note:

-This problem does not occur with any other device that uses the router.

-This problem occurs on Linux only, this did not happen back when I was using Windows 10 on this computer.

-This problem did not occur on my Debian virtual machine that I've used on Windows 10.

-This problem is not distro-specific: I've booted up live sessions of Fedora 31 and Ubuntu 19.10 to check if my problem occurs there and I was correct. Same thing happened back when I tried out Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on this computer.

-Despite that, TAILS 4.0 works perfectly fine in terms of connectivity (both Tor and Unsafe Browser connect to websites that fail on my main setup without any issue).

While looking for ways to resolve my issue, I found out about the "ping", "traceroute" and "dig" commands. I don't really know what to make of their outputs:

-The "ping" command shows no packet loss no matter what website I use it with (at least with the websites that are not blocked by my ISP).

-The "traceroute" command either shows the connection being established immediately or ending on the 30th hop with the "* * *" result. Could this be the problem?

-The "dig" command seems to show the same result just like "ping". I may be wrong, though.

I also have some questions that could help giving me an idea of what exactly is wrong:

-Can incorrect time/locale/language settings affect internet connectivity? I've noticed that TAILS requires proper time syncronization in order to make Tor work. Can this be the same case for my issue?

-My router is pretty old (bought it back in 2013 if not earlier). Can it be that I just need to buy a newer router?

-Does Windows/iOS/Android utilize a certain way of communicating with my router/internet that Linux doesn't?

I love the fact that almost everything works on my Linux setup and I surely hope that this weird problem of mine can be fixed.

    Thank you in advance.

Is it safe to keep Secure Boot disabled?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:48 AM PST

So I just disabled Secure Boot on my Bios and I'm wondering, is it safe to keep it that way if I dual boot with Windows 10? The reason why I did it was because I needed it for Fedora (it was recommended before installing Nvidia proprietary drivers).

Is such software; possible / needed / will succeed / has a point / isn't made yet?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 10:43 AM PST

Hello there, linux noob here! Came here from another page, just wanted to know your opinions too.

Lately i was starting to think about a software idea. Its quite basic, lets say you want to install a program that's not in any form of manager and you gotta compile it. Now i know most of the people has no problem with compiling programs, its just few lines that changes a little from distro to distro. My idea starts exactly there. Its an automation program that does that for you. It works with this simple way:

The creator of the software on github creates a small file called autocompgit (working on the name) this text file goes as: https://justpaste.it/460hj

Now to the program side of things, when you open the program the program gets what distro you using, you enter the name of the git, it searches for you. finds the all available versions. you pick the version you want. then you pick where you want to install it. It downloads the ".tar." file to a temporary location. Then it looks at the autocompgit file in the github page and checks if you have all the packages for compiling it. It compiles the program to your destined path. It removes the temp. Everybody wins.

You also may think "why would people write that file?" well most of the people writes how you need to compile the file anyways so, why not this? The main problem is making it popular.

So is this idea; possible / needed / will succeed / has a point / isn't made yet / should be removed from reddit before it gets stolen?

Issue with mouse cursor in Wine 4.19 Staging

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:51 AM PST

Heya, I've recently switched to Linux and one of my favorite mmos doesn't work natively in it but can be run through wine, yes it technically runs perfectly and I can play it, but the mouse cursor is missing and instead the game's own mouse cursor is just planted on the screen in very low resolution and it doesn't move and it instead makes my cursor invisible.

Is there a workaround to just use my regular desktop cursor because playing this game without actually seeing your cursor is one of the most challenging things I've done to date.

Lost my ability to boot to windows in my dual-boot system with Manjaro. It wouldn't be that big of a deal, except I'm in school and Respondus Lockdown Browser doesn't support Linux, unfortunately. Got a quiz I was supposed to take last night so if anyone can help me get back my windows, i would really appreciate it.

I tried libre office, but it doesn't support rtl text, or more specifically, writing text rtl (Hebrew for example) and putting English words in the middle. Any recommendations for alternatives? Or alternatively, how to make libre office support rtl. Thanks!

Practical / Non-Enterprise Uses for Linux

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 09:04 AM PST

So to start with, I am considering delving into Linux as an experiment and to see if I like it or not. I am not approaching this with the desire to be a system administrator, or make that 6 figure job that everyone drools over. I am simply doing it to challenge myself and to see if it is possible to do anything useful with Linux. I have read about Ubuntu being good for desktop usage and such. I guess, I have no idea where to begin and how I should approach using Linux / expectations. I am building a new computer in the next 6 months and I wanted to maybe try creating a dual boot of Linux and Windows 10.

    1. Completely new to Linux & No real programming knowledge other than currently learning Python. ( I work in the field of Automation / Controls, just a different type of programming skill set.)
    2. Not expecting to switch careers, ( for now personal use only.)
    3. Interested in practical / more down to earth usage of Linux. I admire the "freedom" aspect that I have read about Linux and the possibility of exploring Open Source ideas.
    4. Resources for learning Linux as an ordinary user and learning how to eventually develop my own software / code / programs
    5. Which version of Linux, (I noted about Ubuntu from what I have briefly read about, Is this doable? Advantages / Disadvantages?)
    6. What expectations should I have going into this

I apologize for a loaded question, but everything I read about seems to be oriented around IT Career preparation.

    Headless access options

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 08:08 AM PST

I currently have a new home server. I was going to use my server for my code repository and mssql dbs on my windows boot. I want to be able to dual boot CentOS on the server. Now, I know how to dual boot, I know how to get everything working, but I have one concern. When using RDP from my laptop or tower to my old windows server rdp would allow me to turn on the computer, then it would log in with the creds and get me past the login screen. I am concerned that I do not know how to get that same behavior using CentOS.

I will use CentOS as the primary OS because I can use grub to restart in windows then use RDP to log in. However, with TigerVNC or TightVNC I cant find anything definitive on whether or not I have to be logged into the OS in order to remote in. Will it allow me enter the credentials through my windows VNC client then log me into the desktop?

The workflow I want is: Come home from work, turn on server with no monitor, fire up my laptop or tower and VNC directly into the server without needing to ever use a keyboard/mouse/monitor to get onto it.

Trouble setting custom theme in Ranger

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 06:58 AM PST

I'm having difficulty setting a custom theme in ranger file manager.

I've created the directory ~/.config/ranger/colorschemes and in it created a file named custom.py (the contents of the file i pinched from http://dotshare.it/dots/959/)

then in my rc.conf file I've edited the line to "set colorscheme custom", but nothing happens. I can replace "custom" with any of the default theme names and it changes to the named theme just fine.

Clearly I'm missing something... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    can’t copy files as root

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 02:45 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I have problems copying some particular files. I basically tried copying the complete /sys/module/ directory with cp -r but for a ton of files in that directory I get the error „cannot open for reading: permission denied" even though I'm doing it as root. Any advice on what to do or explanation for what the reason is?

    Black screen

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 04:38 AM PST

I was backing up my home folder to an external hdd with raunchy and writing an iso to an sd card with dd. It was all working but when I walked away to change clothes and came back my screen was black and the backlight flashing. I could see the status LED's blinking so I knew my laptop was still turned on and backing up my home folder. When I walked away dd was almost finished so it could be that finished when I came back but I am sure it wrote to the sd card. I can't switch to another tty. Can someone please help? What should I do?
