    Laptop Purchasing Guide & Q+A - Holiday 2019 Edition!

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 12:25 PM PST

    Hey there, r/laptops!

To preface, I am a laptop refurbisher that has poured several hundred hours into working on (repasting, liquid metalling, undervolting CPU/GPU, upgrading panels/storage/Wi-Fi cards, etc.) several dozens of different laptop models over the last ~18 months, which include some of the following:

    • GIGABYTE Aero 15X
    • Razer Blade 14 & 15
    • Many Dell Latitude and Inspiron variants
    • XPS 13 & 15 Variants
    • HP Elitebooks
    • Various Thinkpad variants
    • Various Alienware variants
    • Surface Book 2 13.5" and 15"
    • MacBook Pro 13"/15" (2013-2015 variants)
    • Acer Helios 300
    • Acer Nitro 5

The list goes on, but I think this list covers the majority of laptops that are being purchased regularly in the past few months, secondhand or otherwise.

I wanted to spread some of the knowledge I've accrued over the last year and try to help people that may be hunting for a new laptop this Black Friday/Holiday or looking for one as a gift for a loved one/friend/family member.

I'm going to keep the guide itself short and sweet, and provide my recommendations for each "genre" of laptop I can think of, with some light rationale behind my choices.

    Best "Jack-Of-All-Trades" Laptop (Including gaming):

Going to have to go with the Aero 15 variant from GIGABYTE on this one. It has the same footprint as the XPS 15, which is already quite compact, while sporting some powerful GPUs and color-calibrated 144Hz or 4K panels. It also rocks a 94WHr battery, making it an amazing productivity machine whilst on the go thanks to Optimus. Many of their units have went on sale on Amazon in the last few weeks, including the 1660Ti unit and the RTX 2070 mQ unit, both being awesome choices for gaming and video production/acceleration. Runner-up choice for me is the Razer Blade 15, but ultimately loses due to a higher price point and smaller battery.

    Best "Dedicated Gaming" Laptop:

This one is a no-brainer for me. If portable gaming (at a desk) is the sole purpose of buying a machine, I am going to have to go with the ASUS Zephyrus S, specifically the unit with the keyboard shifted downward to make room for cooling. This machine can be configured all the way up to an RTX 2080, and has pretty much unparalleled cooling capabilities, making it my favorite choice, as many of the other thin/lights struggle with cooling the CPU when its pulling 45W and above. Look at some reviews from BOAT or OwnOrDisown and you'll see exactly how cool this thing runs! Runner-up choice for me is the 17" variant of the Lenovo Y740, which had even better thermals than the Zephyrus at a lower decibel rating, at the expense of a "meh" build quality and chonky bezels.

    Best Ultraportable (13-14") Laptop:

XPS 13, specifically the 9360 configured with 8th-generation i5s/i7s. The 9370/9380 no longer have a USB-A port, which is super important to have to avoid having to bring a dongle everywhere you go, but still has a USB-C port to charge with. It's still incredibly small, has a great keyboard layout, and amazing screens, like the rest of the XPS lineup. It also still has upgradeable SSDs, unlike the 7390. Not to mention the amazing battery life of the 1080p variant!

    Best Ultrapremium Laptop (No/light gaming):

For the money, you can't beat a good deal on a refurbished XPS 15 9570/7590! They are very easy to service, have insane battery life for the FHD AND 4K variants, and offer excellent CPU performance for its size with some undervolting. I know there are some QC issues acknowledged in the Dell subreddit, but that is why I always recommend buying a refurbished unit, which go through more rigorous QA testing than new units do, and also come with a 1y warranty that is upgradeable. Runner-up choice would be a similarly spec'd Thinkpad X1 Extreme, but is typically more expensive than the XPS and the 1080p screen is only 300 nits, compared to 400 and 500 for the XPS 15. It also has a smaller battery, but does weigh less.

    Best Hybrid/2-in-1/Artist Laptop:

Although pricey, the Surface Book 2 (with the dGPU base) is absolutely extraordinary for what it can do. It has insane battery life despite its ridiculously bright screen and high DPI, great color accuracy and responsiveness for drawing/content creation, and enough horsepower to get most people through about anything. Of course, you can't really open/service this thing, so plan on buying an extended warranty if possible to protect your investment. Also, it seriously has such an amazing keyboard, it is such a pleasant experience to type on! My only nitpick is that the GPU runs quite hot when under load since the fan curve is super conservative unless you change the power plan to "Best Performance". Runner up would be the XPS 15 9575 with the i7-8705G and Vega M graphics for me, but falls short in battery life and its versatility when compared to the tablet mode of the SB2.

That's about all I can type without cramping up for now ^ _ ^

Thus, feel free to comment any questions you may have about any model laptop you've been looking at/comparing against, where to find a good deal on a specific unit, what specs someone may need depending on workflows, anything you may need help with this Holiday season :)

    HP Pavillion or Dell G3

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 12:26 PM PST

Can I please stop being ignored? I need help here! Before I start, I know some of you will ask "What about the Acer Nitro 5?" I haven't really had a good experience with Acer.

    Now to the main part.

So I'm looking at these two laptops which are the Dell G3 (not the 2019 variant, the 2018 one.) and the HP Pavilion 15 Gaming. Both look nice, but I wanted to ask Reddit which one in your opinion is better. My old Dell Inspiron 7559 broke after one of the hinges popped off. (I should also add my budget is $500-$650.) (I don't have a lot of money to afford a top-of-the-line gaming laptop.) So maybe you people can recommend another laptop? (Other than the Acer Nitro 5.) If it helps to know what games I play, I play games like Minecraft, Roblox, City Car Driving, Maybe sometimes Fortnite. I might do some video editing also. But I probably won't be playing the newest graphic demanding AAA titles. I'll also probably use the Box it came in so it doesn't sit on Fabric and possibly Overheat or get Very Hot. I don't really know what else I should add.

    Thanks for helping.

    Student buying a laptop

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 12:17 PM PST

My family laptop just broke 2 weeks ago, can't bother paying money to fix it as it's 4 years old, has no battery and pretty outdated. Sadly my budget is 300-400 euros(350-450 dollars). So, I don't have much choice. Most important things for me are an ssd (at least 256gb) and a decent battery life, I don't want to bother with the charger every day. Most of the models I am looking in to have a 7th generation i3 processor, not sure if 8th generations are worth it or are pentium g5k series good enough. I am used to 16gb of ram, so will 4gb of ram be enough for programming, photoshop, surfing, maybe playing some hearthstone or league of legends on low settings. The local market is the only one available, as I have an exam in 9 days(programming). As for my possible choices for now: -Hp 250 g7 (8gb ram and m.2 ssd) for 370 euros. -Lenovo ideapad 330-15KBn(4gb ram, intel i3 7020U, also has a touchscreen which does not hurt) 302 euros -Lenovo Ideapad s145 with g5405U for the same price. -Asus Vivobook x543UA(same as the others ones)302 euros I am not experienced with laptops, rarely used my family laptop and not sure on which is more important I could pay up to 450 euros for a good reason.

    Laptops under $1300

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:50 AM PST

I was looking for a laptop under 1300 bucks in the black friday sale. I was looking for a couple of them.

One of them is HP Omen 15 dc1069-wm and other one was Dell G7.

Both of them had almost the same specs with:

    i7-9750, 6GB RTX 2060, 16GB, 256GB NvME SSD, 1TB HDD, 144Hz 3ms screen.

They fit my exact requirements and I don't anything more than that and I'm already pushing the price, so this is the limit.

But I found overheating issues with both of them. Can anybody vouch for one of them?

I was thinking of Asus ROG Scar Strix iii. But I am not getting it for my price range.

If not these two, any other viable option with same specs?

PS - I live in India and I'm thinking of getting it imported from USA. So I'm more concerned about heating issues.

Power problem, what could it be?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 05:48 AM PST

If my laptop stays 15 days with no use, it can turn on, if I unplug the power cable it will shutdown inmediatly and it wont turn on again (even the LED that shows if its charging won't turn on). I've already tried to reproduce this with the battery removed so it is not a battery issue.

It's so strange, so it wont turn on, it's bricked but if i wait around 15 days without touching it and unplugged, when i plug it the chargin LED will turn on and the computer will turn on and work normally.... if i turn it off it won't turn on again until 15days after... already tried another charger and same results.

Any thoughts about this? Many thanks for your answers !

When I try researching reliable/durable laptop brands or lines, I get radically conflicting opinions - how do you reconcile this?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:37 AM PST

When I try researching either laptop brands (Dell, HP, Asus, etc.) or certain lines, I see so many radically conflicting opinions online - "I only use HP, every experience I've had with Dell has sucked", or "Dell is the best, never had any problems with it, but every Asus machine I've owned has had so many problems", or "HP laptops are buggy pieces of crap, but I've never had a single issue with Asus", etc....

How do you reconcile this? I'm trying to get a better sense of which brands/lines are generally regarded as durable and reliable - what you see is what you get, and you don't have to worry about having issues with the battery, the fan, the screen, the hardware, etc. only a year or two in.

    Advice needed and greatly appreciated

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:10 AM PST

Needing a new laptop ASAP. Im willing to spend $1000.00, but I'm wouldn't let more money keep me from a great deal. I'm going to college as an Adult, and will be doing as many classes as possible online. But a lot of it can't be done online, so I'll be taking it to class with me. That's what I will be doing mostly. Normal University stuff. But also a few other things. Watching Netflix and YouTube, uploading pictures. I would like it to last for these things as long as possible. Our current laptop is almost 10 year old MacBook pro Lol.(laptop doesn't need to be a Mac) I haven't looked at buying a laptop since we bought that one. If I Google best laptop of 2019, they have a few on different tech sites, but I would rather have your opinions.

So high quality, good battery, and fast would be important.

Is the Dell XPS 13 good for the money? Thanks for you thoughts.

    Best performance for $1,000

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 09:49 AM PST

Hello all, my previous laptop is currently stuck in an infinite loop of booting and shutting down. So I have decided to look for a new laptop.

As according to the title, I am looking for the best laptop that I can get for a $1,000 budget. I'm not apposed to going about $100 higher than the budget. But would prefer anything $1,000 or lower.

I'd like to look into a GTX 1660TI or an RTX 2060, with an i7-9570H. However, i'd like your recommendations on what you'd think.

I plan on streaming and recording games, some of these games being R6S, Modern Warfare, Rust, etc.

Please feel free to comment your suggestions and or any further questions you might have. I appreciate the help!

I'm currently looking at the Acer Predator Helios 300, Lenovo Y540 and many other MSI laptops.
