Client lags when connected to host. Trying to play online games with next-door neighbor. Posted: 24 Nov 2019 07:58 AM PST Incoming wall of text, but anyone that could help would be greatly appreciated:
tl;dr: My Brother and I live right next door and whenever the client connects to the host the client lags in 5 second chunks and then has control for a few seconds and then starts lagging again. Repeat forever. Details of most of what we've tried are in the post below.
My OS: Win 7
Brothers OS: Win 10
My brother and I live right next door to each other and both have great internet speeds and low latency from the same ISP but every time we try to play an online game together the client that joins the host has massive input lag. Games we tried just last night were: Stardew Valley (Steam), Human Fall Flat (Steam), and Diablo II (CD). We both have static IPV4 addresses set outside of our DHCP servers addressing range and have forwarded all of the ports steam/individual games require. The client has seconds of free movement and then lags for a number of seconds and then has a few more seconds of movement and then lags for a number of seconds. This behavior is replicated in all games listed above. Whenever we connect to a random game online that isn't hosted by either of us there is no lag for the both of us.
We got Human Fall Flat to work once and it appeared that resetting our routers fixed the problem, but tonight we logged on again and it was broken. We reset the routers and it was still broken. Steam Voice Chat also breaks the second the client joins the host. We both reset our routers + modems twice to no avail.
Before our single success of the night I noticed when poking around my network adapter settings that I had no IPV6 connectivity. Turns out it was disabled on my router for some reason. I enabled it. My brother's router, while compatible with IPV6 had no menus anywhere to enable it and his network connection was showing IPV6 disabled as well. His connection properties and a test at ipv6-test.com shows no IPV6 connectivity for him and mine works fine. Not sure if IPV6 had anything to do with the issues we were having and judging by my past success it was more dumb luck that made it work once I got IPV6 running. Once we had the game running with no lag it worked for the rest of the night.
I have absolutely no idea if turning on IPV6 had ANYTHING to do with what resolved our problem last night but I fully expect that when we try to play a game online again we will encounter the same exact problem. One thing I did notice when we finally got Human Fall Flat to work is a console message in the game said that our traffic was being routed through a relay network and that could cause bad lag. I researched the error and found that apparently that's what it says when you don't have the correct ports forwarded, but we've both forwarded every port that Steam requires via this list.

New house with Ethernet in walls Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:08 PM PST Hello! I have little to no networking experience. I just bought a house built in 2009 and noticed most rooms have Ethernet ports and coax ports in the walls. I found these two panels in the garage https://imgur.com/a/rfZfMfX I have not yet signed up with an ISP. I do own a modem and router. What are these panels and what do I need to do to be able to take advantage of hardwiring my electronics with the built in Ethernet ports? Do I need to setup the router or modem within these panels? I hope I've provided enough info to get some help. Anything is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
VPN client on pfSense vs VPN connect on device, why different? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:49 PM PST I have openvpn client running on pfSense and it is associated with a VLAN. My access point virtural AP is dedicated to this VLAN. When I connect my laptop to such wifi, though the whatisip website showed me the right UK ip address (I'm in Thailand), I can't play BBC iPlayer,; it still detects I'm not in UK. But with the same VPN profile/provider, if my same laptop (connecting to my main/non-vpn wifi) runs OPENVPN connect software to connect to the same VPN provider, I can play BBC iPlayer without problem. I prefer the VPN/VAP approach because some of my devices can't run openvpn connect "on" device. Anyone can shed some light to me why the pfSense/VPN/VAP approach does not work as it should be? Do I need a network switch? Details inside Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:21 PM PST First, I am super new to this, so forgive my lack of specific terminology. My apartment has numerous ethernet/CAT5 jacks, but none of them were actually set up/connected. Shortly after moving in, I found the spot I wanted to have my router, located the nearest jack, toned for which cable in the cable closet corresponded to that jack, created a CAT5 end on that cable, and connected the main internet line to that newly created cable using one of these. This is the only hardwired connection I have. Now, we will need another hardwired connection, and I will need to basically repeat this same series of steps. However, I'm unclear as to how to feed the main internet line to multiple hardwired sources. Given that I was basically extending that main internet line with the device I mentioned previously, I was wondering if I could do the same for multiple jacks throughout the house by getting a network switch to put in the cable closet. Basically, the main internet line would go into the network switch, and all other network cables corresponding to the other ports I want to use in my apartment would go in the other inputs on the network switch. Would this work? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Suggestions: VDSL modem with half bridge mode Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:12 PM PST As title. VDSL failover line is active but the Openreach (British Telecom) Huawei HG612 doesnt want to pass through a WAN IP no matter what settings I play around with. I need the modem to authenticate, establish session and output the WAN IP as a DHCP allocation to my pfSense firewall. ISP gets funny with dropped PPP sessions so not ideal as I play around with my lab a lot! Does anyone have VDSL with a modem which essentially handles the PPPoE session and outputs the WAN IP over DHCP? Have identified a Billion 8800NL which seems to have half bridge mode but thought I'd check here first before ordering that! [link] [comments] |
Issues with devices connecting to a wifi extender on a guest network Posted: 24 Nov 2019 07:37 PM PST Hello all, I've been having some issues with wifi connection in a new apartment i moved into and I'm looking for advice on a solution. Basically, we pay the tenant upstairs to use their wifi network and they opened a guest network for us to use (ATNU_Guest). I realized once it was all setup that all my smart devices (google home mini, chrome cast, smart lights,) would be able to communicate on the guest network and i ended up buying a wifi extender the TP Link AC750 . Then i connected all my smart devices to the extender and it seemed to work fine. Then I started randomly getting weird issues with my computers. My gaming pc was able to connect to the wifi extender network (ATNU_GuestExtender) but then couldn't connect to the original ATNU-Guest network. Then sometimes it would connect but would have no internet connection. My Macbook is also doing the same thing and sometimes will get no internet from either network. Sometimes I get the error that my Wifi has a self-assigned IP and cannot connect to the internet. My Galaxy S8 has no problems connecting to either network though. It seems to me that often times my Macbook and gaming pc are unable to connect to the internet at the same time which is irritating at times. I'm not sure what seems to be the problem and I'm wondering if it's the extender causing issues with the network. Also we dont have access to the router as it's upstairs in the other tenants apartment. Any tips or solutions are appreciated. [link] [comments] |
My horrendous wifi problem! (Cogeco, Canada) Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:44 PM PST Hey there, I know this might be a long post, but I've just been pulling my hair out. I absolutely despise Cogeco. Ok, let me start, My wifi is horrible, it will randomly kick you off, massive latency spikes, doesn't work in some rooms, wifi password sometimes works, 1/3 of download speed, 1/6 of upload speed. (on ethernet). Ugh, I'm just done. When I confronted them about my wifi they said they could fix it, they came over did some random stuff and off they went. Nope, even worse than before. So, I called again... Again they come over, "fix" it, leave and then charge me. Again, did nothing. And they also randomly up'd my bill by 10-30 dollars with no warning. So I'm losing my mind with them, I can't even watch a youtube video in bed without it freezing for around 15 minutes. So, I called them again, I suggested that it could be my router, they said I can't switch it because my T.V won't work if If I change the router. Something with MoCa. I'm no where near a expert on routers, but I didn't know that was a thing. (My router is a TG2472. I also have TiVo, that might be why I need MoCa? To be honest I don't know. So, here is my question, can I actually switch my router, or is my ISP just telling a story. If I can, which router would be good for me, I have a decently sized house. And if I can't switch. How can I get my wifi to be faster. (I sometimes get 0 mb/ps on my iphone speed tests. Thanks for reading, I apologize on my grammar and ranting, I'm just very frustrated. [link] [comments] |
Home server randomly drops and is inaccessible from network, NIC stays active Posted: 24 Nov 2019 12:42 PM PST I have an issue that I'm having trouble pinpointing on my home network. I set up an old Windows 10 PC as a Plex Media server, for layout reasons it's currently only connected via Wifi to a Ubee router (wireless N / 2ghz) and I access it through RDP to the internal IP. Ideally it will be wired in the future after some furniture moving. The issue I'm having is the server randomly(afaik) dropping from the network and becomes unpingable from other computers on the network or from the router itself with a ping test. The odd thing is even though I can't RDP/Ping/hit any port, if I do any of the following the server comes back up on the network, starts pinging again, and I can RDP: Connect via Teamviewer even if I don't login Make any firewall change on the Ubee router(resets the Ubee firewall basically) Reset the Router Plex connection does not bring the network up. And to rule out the firewall on the router I even left the firewall security settings disabled overnight and still lost connection. I've looked into the NIC settings and the router settings and don't see anything that would be disabling the adapter or powering it off until packets are received. Anyone have any ideas? I'm going to run a ping test overnight from pc -> pc and see if it drops with a constant icmp packet [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:27 PM PST I have a new home that I'll be building a network in over the next month. I'm going to be running ethernet drops to a few rooms, and my plan was to put AP's in those same places. I'm always open to plugging some Superpods or Eeros into a switch, if that is cost effective and easy. I've been hunting through all the sales and I'm just not seeing anything that could do wired backhaul on a good deal. Is there something I'm missing, or do I have to just open the wallet and get it over with? [link] [comments] |
How to mirror traffic on a tunnel interface to external switch? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 01:53 PM PST I have a vpn tunnel interface in a VM. I somehow need to get this traffic to a switch for monitoring. I can attach some other physical interfaces to the VM but I don't know how to copy the traffic from the tunnel interface to the physical interface. Maybe there are also some other ways ??? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:38 PM PST Hi there all, I was wondering if any of you would be able to help me with my WiFi related issue, since I've tried everything in my power to fix it but come to no avail. My computer keeps disconnecting constantly... Its only started happening for around 2 weeks or so. I have tried my built in WiFi adapter, and an external USB WiFi adapter, I have my consoles in the general location and it can connect fine with no disconnecting etc. However whenever I try to play a game.. For example CS:GO my ping will go from 40-60 then all of a sudden rise to 500+, it isn't just CS:GO it does this on though, I also get no Internet, but connected on the networks when this happens. My signal strength is 4 or 5 bars too. Please any help would be amazing. Many thanks, Sir_Svine [link] [comments] |
Packet loss with Edgerouter X and SQM QoS Posted: 24 Nov 2019 05:20 PM PST So I'm having issues with packet loss, it seems specific to Apex or more specifically the packet size and stuff that Apex uses. I used pingplotter on the closest Apex server and here are the results through my network like normal vs directly through the modem. And here is the SQM config. Can anyone help me with this, the only odd stuff about the network is 2x wan balancing because the internet where I live is cable 3mbit/s. So we have two connections going to our apartment to help with our many devices. Any other service or game that we've tried works perfectly fine. [link] [comments] |
Looking for router recommendations Posted: 24 Nov 2019 12:53 AM PST I have a Netcomm router, it contains a 4-port Ethernet switch and a wireless AP with it inside the router. The Ethernet ports are only 100Mbps so I'm looking to get better router. I'm in Australia so I use NBN (which connects to the router). I'll be assuming in this post that a router is a router+switch+AP because I don't think you can find many routers that are just router or router+switch. If there's a better option with getting a wired-only router and using my old one as an AP, that I'm fine with that. (but my router doesn't support AP-only mode, is turning off DHCP and changing router IP enough?) What I'm looking for in a router is:
Preferably one with good security and is reliable, and still supported if that matters (eg. safe against upnp attacks). An open source firmware like openwrt or dd-wrt would be nice if it's practical. One that doesn't call home all the time (excluding ntp requests and the like) and isn't a privacy nightmare. Budget is around $50-$75AUD max. So basically the network is as so: ISP > NBN > router > "router provided switch which connects wired devices to the LAN","router provided wireless AP for connecting mobile devices to the LAN" What are some recommendations for good, not too expensive routers that fit these guidelines? I'm not really going into enterprise or tinkering with enterprise hardware like massive switches or anything, I just use the router like anybody else except I have a server on it. [link] [comments] |
Cat6 wiring in a concrete home Posted: 24 Nov 2019 10:21 AM PST Hello everybody, So i live in the middle east where the houses and apartments usually are made completely from solid concrete. Since i am really sick of the really bad wifi connections passing the concrete walls i was thinking of hard wiring the house. But since the walls are made out of solid concrete we do not have ( crawl space) or so like the states. So i thought of buying a switch ( 16 or 24 port) and deploy 2 cables in each room including 2 in each of the 2 living rooms and 2 in the kitchen, so 12 in total. In addition i want i want to add 2 AP covering the whole house. I will be adding cameras (3 or 4) down the road also. So my main question is the following: What is the best way to wire ethernet cable in a concrete house, as channeling in the concrete is really tiring and time consuming as i am the one who will be doing it as the spaces are really big. I dont like to use plastic wiring channels because they are ugly. Also, powerline adapters are not a choicesue to reliability issues. I know i haven't left any other choice but maybe some one is aware of something i dont know. Thanks ! [link] [comments] |
Daisy chain home network media distributor Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:13 PM PST Sorry for the long post and thank you if you take the time to read and reply. I would greatly appreciate any advice that can be offered with what I aim to do and how I could do it? So I've just started looking into home networking as something to pass the time due to a change of personal circumstances and given the amount of routers that people have got lying around makes for a cheap and easy project to work on. I'm looking into idea of using a base router to send my internet connection over wifi to another router and use the remote router as a switch to give other users another access point. (Namely the kids and their tech) I plan on making a daisy chain with 2 remote routers so there is a switch in the 2 rooms I have decided I would like there to be access. Then I had a brainwave (well maybe). Could there be a way of using this to distribute my tv from my set top box to the other TV's in the house? If I can do it without running cable all over the place then it's got to be worth investing a little time on,right? The real question I'm getting at is, can I use one of the ports on my base router as an input and send this to a pre assigned port on both the remote routers to distribute the tv signal and would this be a realistic solution to running cables? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
looking for Wifi planning resources/training material Posted: 24 Nov 2019 12:16 PM PST I'm searching for training material on how to design a wifi network, primarily 5G for a low/medium density but concrete construction building. Talking about a office + garages with maybe 4-10 APs, 20-60 people, but over a larger area.
Anyone has any resources for that? I could find something for high density and very specific situations, but I'm kinda missing all the "basics" above. [link] [comments] |
Isolating Networks for Security Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:57 PM PST Is there any security advantage to putting riskier devices on the guest network and keeping actual laptops and computers on the main network? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:55 PM PST My cable modem is at one end of a 2000sq ft ranch home and my default cable modem only reaches about half way to the other side. I want a range extender but don't want to buy something that won't get the job done or provide decent speeds. I've seen feedback about the Nighthawk AC1900 being too pricey for home use, but it was a lot more expensive at that time. I'd rather $100 on something that works well instead of $50 for something that won't reach the whole house or provide crap speeds. Opinions? [link] [comments] |
Who do I ask to install Ethernet cable into rooms? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:49 PM PST So I already have a hole in my flooring where my old cable wire comes out from. I honestly can just go under my house and do this myself but I don't have the time and it's pretty dirty down there (haven't been down there for years) and who knows what's in there. Who am I suppose to ask to install the Ethernet cable for me? I doubt it's AT&T [link] [comments] |
Understanding the wiring of my house Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:39 PM PST Hi, I just came into this house about 1 year ago. Up until this point I had wifi with mesh for my general purpose and it's been really great +/- 200 Mbps download/upload everywhere. My house is a 3 story one, basement, ground floor and first floor. My PC is at the first floor and modem in the basement. I knew there was CAT5e running arround the house but didn't really need them until today. Since they are CAT5e, I tought I could have been able to just rewire the ends but I do not understand the spaghetti. I haven't been able to test the phone plug since we only use our cellphones, I could buy a cheap one if any test related to having is needed. Ultimatly, what I would like to do is to be able to connect my modem directly in the basement and have ethernet on the first floor, I do not need to use the connection that is on the ground floor. Can I connect my fibers ONT to an RJ-45 receptacle which then connects to my gateway? Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:52 AM PST So, I've been having some Wifi issues recently and in order to solve them I want to relocate my ATT gateway. Currently its in an upstairs office area pretty far from anything that uses the actual WiFi network but its up there because thats where the previous owners had ATT install the ONT. Directly next to the fiber ONT in that upstairs office though, is an RJ-45 port that currently connects my gateway to a switch I have downstairs which then feeds out to the rest of my network. Logically I know that connecting an ethernet cable to an RJ-45 just extends that cable to the cable thats on the other end of the RJ-45 so there shouldnt be an issue with just plugging the cat-5e cable that leaves the ONT into the RJ-45 receptacle, and then connecting the gateway to the other end downstairs. But, I wanted to run this idea across some other people who may know something I dont or may have experience with this kind of thing so that I can learn if theres any potential issues or reasons I shouldnt do this. So, can anyone give me a thumbs-up or thumbs-down or any anything else regarding this idea? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Questions about OPNsense, VLANs, pihole, bridging, DHCP and DNS. Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:45 AM PST Hello r/HomeNetworking, I have a little bit of networking experience but I'm quickly learning that networking isn't my strong suit. For a few years I have had a network firewall appliance set up with Sophos XG Firewall running two separated LANs (through different NICs on the appliance): a "wired LAN" and a "wireless LAN". I found out as growing the network that these descriptors weren't very accurate. For example, I ended up putting my PoE security cameras on the wireless LAN because I didn't want them on the same network as my servers. At first I was using Sophos XG Firewall to handle the DNS, it didn't work very well because the software isn't really designed for that. I set up an orangepi with a docker version of pihole. I found that, through the docker network mapping, I could use both the wired and wireless network interfaces on the orangepi to serve DNS to both LANs. It was working very well. A few weeks ago the firewall appliance died. I replaced it temporarily with an old spare hardware router I had in storage just to get the network back online. Because of the single simple router, I flattened out my network. I took my pihole instance and converted it to be the DHCP server so it was handling DHCP and DNS. Now, I've got my firewall appliance back online but I've installed OPNsense instead with all ports except the WAN port bridged and now I want to set up VLANs but I have so many questions.
I've been googling around for strategy and help on creating a home VLAN network but I haven't been very successful. I think this is because you have to configure the router and the switches to really enable VLAN infrastructure and it quickly becomes complicated with all the possible variations in hardware/firmware. Anyway, very interested in thoughts and opinions on this. [link] [comments] |
