Recommendation needed for managed switch, 2x 10Gbe SFP+ ports and 24 x RJ45, some outbound POE Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:52 AM PST I bought a Mirkotik CSS 326-24G2S but I'll be returning it. Out of the box, it's a fairly decent switch, considering how cheap it is. No issues with speeds or anything like that. But It doesn't handle IGMPv3 very well at all. It seems to be having issues with VLANs as well. I need IGMP snooping and VLAN for IPTV from my ISP/TV provider, so the Mikrotik switch just won't cut it. I need a managed switch that has at least 2 SFP+ ports, and 24 ethernet ports, some of them with outbound POE capability to power 2 Ubiquiti UAP Pros and 2 security cameras. I looked at the Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch, but the 24 port switches only have SFP not SFP+ I was also looking at the Ubiquiti USW‑Pro‑24‑PoE, but I can't find out if and how it handles IGMP snooping. Transfer speed between NAS and PC Posted: 23 Nov 2019 04:21 PM PST I have a Synology NAS and a media PC. The transfer speeds between the 2 are about 100mbps. But if I use my PC to transfer to the NAS, I get gigabit speed. If I use my PC to transfer to the media PC, I get gigabit speed. It's just the transfer between the media PC and the NAS. They are sitting next to each other on the same switch. I have tried moving the NAS to the same switch as my PC and the same situation happens. I've tried turning off large send offload. Advice for running HDMI over CAT cable with multiple recievers and sources Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:42 AM PST What I am looking for -Multiple HDMI sources (Apple TV, game consoles, etc...) in a single cabinet -Run CAT cables to my multiple destinations -TVs run at different resolutions -Not noticeable lag -Ability to select the input source at the receiver -Wireless preferable but not necessary Is this possible? I have searched around a bit and not found entirely clear answers to this. Thank you for your input. [link] [comments] |
Is a mesh system or good router better? Posted: 23 Nov 2019 02:04 PM PST This would be for a 2000 sqft 2 story house. (Edit) 100 down and 5 up connection, house has drywall, I'd place the router in the middle of my house where there is a desk in the kitchen area but not really in the kitchen. I do game. Posted: 23 Nov 2019 01:00 PM PST I'm hoping someone out there can make sense of all this and lend some expertise as this is beyond my knowledge of basic networking. So I'm in a new house, which has cat5 cable distributed to a few wall jacks, but none of them work. There's a fiber optic modem, and a wireless router in place, and a mess of cables. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Nov 2019 06:44 PM PST Both my ReadyNAS (Netgear 2304) and LG Smart TV support DLNA. Both appear to have DLNA enabled. I can see the ReadyNAS on my TV, but it has no folders or files. When I click 'view all folders' it brings up an admin folder, which doesn't exist on the NAS. I tried simply making an admin folder and moving some test files in it, but had no luck. Anyone have a ReadyNAS device on their home network and able to view and use it on their devices? [link] [comments] |
Static IPs killing DHCP? (TP-Link C4000) Posted: 23 Nov 2019 06:29 PM PST Sorry for formatting. Typing on phone. Trying basic setup of a new TP-Link router. Changed the router's default IP to something a bit different (192.168.19.1, for example). No issues there. Adjusted DHCP range to 192.168.19.100-192.168.19.255. Again, no issues. As soon as I attempt to set an "IP reservation" from within the DHCP control panel (giving my desktop a reserved IP) and reboot the router, nothing will connect to it either by wired or wireless connection. My desktop (wired) and phone (wifi) both state an IP address could not be acquired. I have no apparent way to get back into router config unless I factory reset (which I've done once already). Very confused here, as assigning an IP to a MAC is something I've done for years on several other routers without issue, and I can't imagine why this is causing such an problem. Any ideas on what I'm missing here?? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Home Network Intermediate Device Problem Posted: 23 Nov 2019 01:03 PM PST Hi all, ftp with a networking nightmare here... I intermittently have problems with port links going down on both my switch and router within my home network. My current setup is ISP Modem/Router/'SuperHub' set in Modem Mode -> Cat6 -> ASUS RT-AC66U (with Merlin Johns Fork) -> Cat7 -> Netgear Prosafe SG105Ev2 5 port switch -> Cat7 -> PC/PS4/RPi. So the problem is the ports will intermittently fail on my PC and PS4 (I've yet to see it happen on my RPi as I added that recently with an NMS). I can't fathom why as I've swapped networking cables from router to switch, switch to end devices and even replaced the switch from TP-Link to Netgear Prosafe. Yet my problem still occurs every so often with no obvious reason. I'll be happily playing online games or watching movies on Netflix when the ports go down on end devices connected to the switch. I've also tried changing router firmware from stock to John's Fork which is said to be the most stable, removing Hyper-V virtual switches from my PC, directly connecting to the router, praying to the flying spaghetti monster the problem doesn't happen again and so on but yet it persists. Anyone with solid networking knowledge able to chip in on what the problem may be? I thought at first it was my PC but it also occurs on my PS4 annoyingly so that rules out problematic NIC in my PC. Side Note: I've noticed that the link speed will change to the router from 1000Mb to 100Mb intermittently, usually a restart or port off/on will resolve. Edit: Title was supposed to say intermittent (as much as I hate the word in IT), apologies! [link] [comments] |
What are the differences between these unmanaged switches? Posted: 23 Nov 2019 03:21 PM PST I plan on using a small 4 port unmanaged switch to hook up to a MoCA adapter at some point. There's some difference between metal and plastic (which one is better) in some of the products, but I'm not seeing the differences otherwise.
All appear to be fan-less. I am planning the switch being connected to a Roku Ultra, PS4, and wifi extender. My internet speed presently is 75Mbps. I am mainly considering the first two options. I don't think I need any more ports than 4, and I don't know what else I should be looking for my particular use case. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Nov 2019 09:21 AM PST Hi guys I'm in need of help and just can't get it working and unsure of whether or not it's even possible. I have my main network on IP address of 192.168.0.1/24 which then gives a second router a static IP address of 192.168.0.5. This router then distributes a second IP range of 192.168.8.1/24 which I plan to add all my IoT devices on with pihole set up. What I am trying to achieve though is for both ranges to see and discover one another? Is this possible? The second router which is on the 192.168.8.1/24 range is an openwrt devices which is customizable and have a feeling I can allow it to see the other devices through 'Luci' firewall? Any help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Wake on WAN, except Shutdown instead? Posted: 23 Nov 2019 07:55 PM PST I have Wake on WAN working perfectly, no issues. But now I want Shutdown on WAN. A way to remotely shutdown my PC. I can't find much info online for this though. Is there a specific port to use like wake does? Or what's the best way? [link] [comments] |
What’s the best “wireless gateway”? Posted: 23 Nov 2019 07:45 PM PST Sorry if posting to wrong sub. I tried cord cutters with no luck. If anyone can direct me to a more appropriate sub, please do. Question: I'm trying to cut off Comcast cable but I need to keep internet(whether from comcrap or someone else). What is the best wireless gateway or router/ modem combo I can get for gaming/streaming purposes. I'm only about 20 feet from my internet connection and don't want to use the Ethernet cable. Thanks in advance!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Nov 2019 03:26 PM PST Something I have not seen much of a topic on here is Ethernet Cables. I want to keep things uniform in regards to cables at my home so now I'm looking into cables. What cables would you recommend? I'm looking for good quality control, CAT 6 and variable lengths. I know mediabridge are well known, I wonder what else. [link] [comments] |
Sending fax from windows 10 computer Posted: 23 Nov 2019 02:05 AM PST Hello, I have a windows 10 PC which connects through a cable router to the internet. I would want to be able to send faxes from the computer. Do I need additional hardware for this purposes or do I need to install only some software? I didn't find any specific information on this. Edit: I do not have a modem connected to a phone line! [link] [comments] |
Helping a friend with a home network and outdoor AP Posted: 23 Nov 2019 05:11 PM PST Hey all. My friend has a fairly large home (approx 3500sqft) made mostly of brick/stone. Currently he has the best source of internet connection available in the area... DSL 10Mbps which obviously is abysmal to today's standards but there is no way around that. The goal here is to get the best possible signal around the house to make the most use of the 10Mbps connection. There are usually 10-15 nodes connected to the network at any given time, at peak utilization there will probably be 1-2 devices on netflix and 1-2 browsing the web. Now - he also wants to get internet access to a barn which is about 250ft from the house. I'm asking for all your help in suggesting what a good option might be. I'm not a networking expert by any means, I've set up mesh networks, APs, routers (freeBSD many years ago) but I'm not going to lie and say I know what I'm doing. I've been looking at AmpliFi since that's based on Ubquiti's system and I've read good things about them but I'm just trying to gather some opinions to help provide a good solution for him. He also wants to add wifi security cameras to the barn but I'm not too worried about that. With mesh systems, as far as I'm aware they don't daisy-chain per say. Am I correct with this? I wouldn't be able to add a secondary mesh device that would use the signal from another mesh device? In a perfect world I would like set up the AmpliFi router in the center of the house with mesh points on each side of the house and then another mesh point in the barn... is that a possibility? I know Ubquiti offers products that would solve every problem we have but he's trying to keep this on a budget without dropping a few grand on some professional equipment. I also don't have the confidence to figure out how to set it all up. Thank you all for your help! Any input is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Nov 2019 05:47 PM PST I want to get as close as gigabit as I can over wi-fi. My PC is only getting around 200mps with the router ATT provided. Wired isnt an option right now but will be once my lease is done. This setup was recommended to me. https://www.ui.com/unifi-routing/usg/ with https://www.ui.com/unifi/unifi-ap-ac-lite/ is this good enough? [link] [comments] |
How is this keystone jack "tool-less"? Posted: 23 Nov 2019 05:02 AM PST Ahoy. This Trendnet keystone jack is billed as tool-less. How does it work? How would you terminate or punch down without a punch down tool? See the pictures. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KM8QKDV Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Nov 2019 12:34 PM PST Just moved into a new place that had structured wiring to 8 rooms, 4 downstairs and 4 upstairs. The wiring includes 2 coax (black and white) and 2 CAT5e (blue and grey) in each bundle, but only the black coax and blue Ethernet were terminated in the rooms. I terminated all the Ethernet lines with keystones in the rooms and to a patch panel in the garage. After testing, all the Ethernet lines downstairs work, but only the blue Ethernet lines work upstairs. I've tried toning the lines to find out where they go, but it doesn't seem strong enough to detect through the wall. Has anyone ever seen individual cables from structured wiring run somewhere other than the rest of the bundle? Edited: grammar and color [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Nov 2019 08:29 AM PST Hi all – AT&T Fiber was installed yesterday, the 1 Gbps plan. I bought two goCoax MoCA 2.5 adapters and set them up as soon as the AT&T guy left. (My new ISP is actually Sonic, which resells AT&T Fiber.) The AT&T BGW210 wireless gateway is situated at the entertainment center, so the TV and streaming devices are plugged into it directly with patch cables – I don't like depending on wireless for streaming. One MoCA adapter is plugged into this gateway/router. The other adapter is plugged into a switch in my office/spare bedroom, and my desktop PC is also plugged into that switch. The desktop is getting 866 Mbps down and 684 up (full results). I've never had anywhere near that speed at home. The MoCA adapters work like a charm with zero config necessary (or possible?). I just plugged them into the right cables and boom, a near-gigabit wired network. Note that I was only getting 20-ish Mbps with Powerline in this condo (so I canned the Powerline adapters and switched to wireless for a while, which was faster.) I did get around 100 Mbps with Powerline in a previous apartment – Powerline is extremely variable depending on the home's wiring, much more so than MoCA as far as I know. I'm a little bummed that AT&T forces their wireless router/gateway on you. I don't want it, and it forced me to shelve the TP-Link router I bought recently. I can probably use the TP-Link as an AP, or bridge to it, but I'm not super motivated to do that just yet since I've got both TVs, the streaming sticks, and my desktop all on wired Ethernet/MoCA. The only devices using WiFi are our phones. (By the way, I used this Ethernet adapter for our new Amazon Fire Stick 4K and it works great.) I'd rather have AT&T stop at the ONT, and configure it so that the customer's router can connect straight to the ONT. Thanks for helping me confirm that we had fiber already wired in this condo – I had no idea there was fiber here until I started hunting for the coax point of entry and found a mysterious wall plate that turned out to be fiber. I still haven't found the coax POE, but MoCA works anyway so I guess whatever splitter they're using is MoCA compatible. I still want to install a MoCA filter to keep our traffic secure, but all the sensitive traffic is encrypted at the endpoints already. [link] [comments] |
Shielded or unshielded ethernet cable? Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:33 AM PST Hello. I'm planning to get a Cat6 ethernet cable however I couldn't decide whether I should buy basic U/UTP cable or something more specific like S/FTP. Since it is home environment, I don't need it to be so strong, but I need it to be as flexible as possible. I also don't even know why I would need a braided or foil shield so all advices and tips are welcome. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Needing more ethernet ports, will this work? Posted: 23 Nov 2019 09:51 AM PST So my router is full on ethernet ports, and I'm about to get a nintendo switch lan adapter. Also, what makes the 5th ethernet port different, does it matter which port I plug each ethernet cable in? [link] [comments] |
RT-AC5300 to mesh for crowded home network, or wait? Posted: 23 Nov 2019 06:04 AM PST Quick question ahead of Black Friday device sales! Scenario: 3100 sq foot house that is a modern, open plan (lit's a box) with gigabit AT&T running into a Ubiquiti security gateway. Home office, lots of IoT stuff, thermostats, solar inverters, hubs, dots, blah blah. All the home office is stuff is wired with Cat6 while Wifi runs everything else and a separate guest network on an RT-AC5300. Right now it works pretty well but the number of devices keeps going up (25 Wifi clients and it's early in the morning with not much going on...) and kids aren't even of computer-using age yet. Sometimes a thermostat right next to the router will drop off and there are a couple of dead zones. It's very manageable but I'm wondering if it's worth the move to a mesh. If things are 'pretty good but not great' now, is it better to wait for Wifi6 to evolve a bit more, or is there a good upgrade path right now from an AC-5300? Budget is not an issue but if the improvement is only going to be marginal, happy to hang on for another yet. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Nov 2019 09:37 AM PST I have an amplifi hd , which happens to have a USB port but is disabled. Luckily I kept an old Netgear r7000 around with tomato installed. That has a USB port on it Is there anyway I can connect the Netgear to the amplifi making it a switch and then use the USB port on the Netgear to connect to a Western digital external drive for file sharing ? Posted: 23 Nov 2019 09:30 AM PST Hi folks. Need help with some DHCP issues I have been facing randomly. dhclient is sending DHCPDISCOVERs. The router is sending back DHCPOFFERs for each DHCPDISCOVER but seems like the client is not receiving. Occasionally, dhclient sends a DHCPREQUEST (without a DHCPOFFER‽) to which the router promptly responds with a DHCPACK, which is also not received by the client. Static IP also does not work. Surprisingly, DHCP works for the first few minutes after the computer boots. Questions: [link] [comments] |
Google wifi -> Netgear router (As network switch) -> Phillips hue bridge/other cross talk Posted: 23 Nov 2019 08:51 AM PST OK, so here is my issue. I found a scrap router (Netgear WGR614v10). I did not see a option to set it in AP mode, but connected to my google wifi and other devices connected to it it operates accurately as a switch for my other devices. Here is my problem, I can not seem to get devices connected to my google wifi node (I only have one) to talk to devices connected to the Netgear. Example I can not setup my Phillips hue bridge that is hardwired to the netgear with my phone that is on the Google wifi because it is not found on the network. Same with my hardwired xbox talking to my phone. It seems the issue may be the google wifi LAN IP is 192.168.86.1 and the netgear router is 192.168.1.1. So I tried to change the Google wifi LAN IP to 192.168.1.1 but then the netgear automatically changed it's IP to 10.0.0.1 to not conflict with it. What is the solution here? Are switches with Google wi-fi not practical for crosstalking devices? or just with a router as a switch? Advice? [link] [comments] |
