Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:46 PM PST I'm a software guy with intermediate networking knowledge. I purchased a new home that included a smart panel + cat6 and coaxe wired to every room. My goal is to have TVs, consoles, and PCs wired, and wireless access points upstairs and downstairs for better 5ghz connectivity for tablets and laptops, etc. there's orange tubing (See picture below) coming from outside the home into the smart panel, from what I understand this is so the ISP can run fiber directly into the home? When I had a tech contractor from the ISP come by last week he seemed confused by the setup, which makes sense since they usually just want to know "where do you want the WiFi box to sit". https://i.imgur.com/RDMn6px.jpg 1) does the ISP actually run fiber into the house and setup their modem near that panel? What should I tell the technician specifically to ensure it's setup correctly 2) would I just be able to get internet up and running to the other rooms with the ISP modem, my existing router, and purchasing a switch to handle all the new connections? (Not including wireless access points for up and downstairs) Any help or suggestions appreciated thank you [link] [comments] |
Best Stable Entry Level Home Networking Solution Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:28 AM PST Currently I'm on a Netgear R7000. It's been great up until the last 6 months with all of the firmware updates coming from it. The WIFI drops packets pretty constantly. I decided to flash it to FreshTamato which has fixed the WiFi issues. However, neither firmware(s) allow me to properly port trigger for the latest CoD game. Even if I turn the firewall off on this router it isn't always OPEN nat type. (ALSO have tried Port Forwarding with a static internal IP address) My wife and I both play which is why I am trying to OPEN nat for both of us in the first place. My PLEX server and FTP server work perfectly with the ports. Directly connecting to the modem gives me an OPEN nat every time. Anyways, enough of that rant. I have been reading on and off for a couple days and noticed everyone recommend the Ubiquiti ER-X and AC-Lite. Is this still the best entry level solution for good stable/controllable internet? Is this going to be better then my R7000? Is there any other options I should know about? I was also reading some people convert older PC's into a router. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2019 06:28 PM PST I have 200mbps cable, but my biggest issue is with 4 kids, and 6 TVs, ring doorbells, etc we have 36 items on the network most of the time. I have a 3 story house about 5000 sqft. My Velop system does "ok" with coverage but the speeds drop off quickly around the house and lately I have been having several drops and freezing that usually is solved by router reboot. I'm pretty frustrated but I'm not sure if the investment to WiFi 6 makes sense. I'm not too scared off by the price, but I've been debating between the arris surfboard plus and the new eero or possibly the Synology router. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2019 05:30 PM PST I have recently picked up a nighthawk x6s tri band router and was confused exactly how the 2 5g bands work. I was under the impression that like a dual band router there was only one 5g network that you connected your devices too but upon farther inspection it looks like there are actually two different 5g network names that you can connect your devices too. Is the best think to do to try to go and manually spread my devices so some are on 5g network 1 and some are on 5g network 2? From all the stuff I read before buying I was under the understanding that this was all automatic so I am confused. Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2019 05:21 PM PST Hi all, I'm interested in getting a mesh wifi system since my home does not have ethernet run to multiple areas. I currently run a single linksys router but it's plugged in, in one corner of the home and I run into lower speeds on the opposite end as well as upstairs. I'm just wondering a few things about these systems... 1) I do a lot of gaming and would have my PC hardwired into the main node, so I assume it would perform similarly as my current router would since its hardwired? 2) Any suggestions on which system people on here prefer and which system allows for access through a browser. I saw the tp-link deco system only allows for settings through their app/cloud system and there's actually no router interface available directly to the router itself through a computer. Thanks! Is a RT-ACRH13 good enough for a 200 mbps conection? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 06:53 PM PST I've got a 200 mbps connection and I'm wondering if a 2x2 AC router would be good enough for it. I also live in an area with very little Wifi interference (I can see one other weak network signal in some parts of the house) so I don't need fight for Wifi spectrum. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:01 AM PST Hello there! I have a small question to ask regarding my home internet. So I live in a second world country(Croatia) and networking speeds here are godawful. To my surprise, my ISP called me telling me I can reach higher speeds since they upgraded their infrastructure upto 60mbps download(currently I have 10),but they would have to install fibre optic cables in my house. The question I'm asking is do I really have to install them because we installed cat5e cables 2 months ago since the older cables were decades old and on the internet it says cat5e should theoretically support those speeds? I am few kilometers away from the internet central in my part of the city. Thanks for advice in advance! Edit:Thank you to everyone for your advice! [link] [comments] |
Best Solution for Remote Troubleshooting Posted: 29 Nov 2019 05:32 PM PST Hello all, Like many others I have a mother that just *can't* when it comes to computers. She has failed to grasp connecting a USB device after physically being shown. Being busy with two kids, full time work and studying for certification exams means I'm not the most prompt when it comes to acting as an onsite service technician for her, despite loving her as much as I do. It occurred to me that it might be a good opportunity to get some hands on networking experience. What I'm interested in doing is setting up a remote connection to her PC so when she calls me I can take over and show her exactly what to do in real time. I was planning on using RDP, but I missed the memo that that's only usable with Pro/Enterprise versions of Windows. Am I stuck with third party software... and do you folks have any suggestions on what to use? I'm mildly concerned about security, with regards to open ports. She doesn't use her PC for anything sensitive but I sure do. If this post doesn't belong here please let me know! And thank you in advance for any responses. [link] [comments] |
Mobile Hotspot (Netgear MR1100) and Deco Mesh? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:54 PM PST I have a mobile hotspot MR1100 that I have successfully set up to work with a regular Netgear router. Works great in my 800 sqft home. I am trying to use this hotspot setup on a different home (3500 sq ft) which has Deco's Mesh wifi system in place (the M5s). Anyone successfully set this up? Is there a trick? Even though I have the MR1100 in bypass mode (which is how I used it on my other router), the M5 will say "Unable to connect to the internet" and suggest I either call my ISP (internet works fine), or find a different plug for the ethernet cable. Internet extremely unstable after tech added another line to the Adsl. Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:50 PM PST Tech came earlier today in an attempt to up the speeds we were receiving. Originally at 16 Mbps, the added line brought us to 31 after the speedtest. Well after he left I immediately noticed the 3.7 peak MBps I was receiving on steam was fluctuating from there back down to 1.6 I've been trying to play a multiplayer game all night and keep getting disconnects due to the internet. I can tell it goes out when my Discord connection goes red and I either get kicked from the game or my ping skyrockets. Is there anyway I can troubleshoot this myself or will I need Att back to fix the intermittent issues with the secondary paired line? I can upload the modem logs somewhere if need be. The errors aren't too bad on the first line but the second line seems to be disconnecting very frequently. [link] [comments] |
How exactly do MoFi systems work? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:23 PM PST I've been searching all over the place. Long story short, I'm going to be travelling a lot and I want decent wifi with me. I was looking at this mofi routers and I might have my heart set on them, but I have no idea how the payment for them works, nor can I find pricing options. For instance if you grabbed a Huawei 5G Mobile WiFi E6878-870 it'd have monthly payments besides the fee you straight up paid for it right? Sorry this subreddit seemed like the best place to ask, it came up in my searches quite often when I was looking around. I'm not much of a tech person, please have mercy on me. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Nov 2019 07:08 PM PST Hello, Thanks in advance for any help offered. Even if you are just guessing, I'll gladly accept the help. Background: Pi-Hole works. When I run into problems such as these, I have no idea where to begin to resolve the issue. Thanks everyone! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2019 06:52 PM PST My office Dell laptop comes with a VPN client (SonicWall) that allows me to connect to my office network remotely. Here are the info (bubble popup from the icon in systray) that I can see after a connection: Server/IP name: xxxxx.xxxxxxx.com (and ip address ###### here) Realm: xxxxx (I believe this is the domain) Community: xxxxx (same info as realm) Redirection Mode: Split Tunnel (non-local) ESP/Compression: On/On Tunnel/Local IP: ####### / ####### I've tried to setup a VPN connection to the same server on my home Win10 PC, using the built-in connection manager. I can only enter details like the server address, my user name and password (given to me by my boss), with VPN type at Automatic. There's no option for me to enter domain/realm. The connection fails though. It just can't connect. How do I get a connection? I don't want to install 3rd party VPN client on my home PC just to connect to my office network. [link] [comments] |
Problem loading archive.is while on my home network. Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:29 PM PST So if I'm on my phone and using mobile data, I can load archive.is webpages with no problem. When I connect to my WiFi network the webpages are all blocked. This problem started when I switched ISPs and I am now using their router. Is it possible my ISP or the router is blocking the site? How would I be able to tell such a thing in the first place? edit: Also, I just downloaded Chrome browser to try and it is also blocked there, so I know it is nothing to do with my firefox extensions or settings. Wondering if I can connect a separate router directly to my ps4 to increase internet speeds Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:08 PM PST ISP: Cox Current Router: Cisco Linksys E300 (old, I know) So I have an outdated linksys router that is currently in my home office where the main PC is. As of right now I get decent speeds on my PC because of the wired connection to the router and I'm looking for ways to increase my up and down speeds on my PS4 which is currently located on the floor below the office and using a wireless connection. Right now the connection speeds on my PS4 are below average and well below where I want them. I don't know a whole lot of routers and all that, but I was wondering if I could just connect a separate router to the ps4 with a wired connection to increase my speeds. Would that work? If not, any other recommendations to help me out? Thanks for the help in advance. [link] [comments] |
IT professional stumped by AIO modem Posted: 29 Nov 2019 03:43 PM PST I have a buddy who hosts a slew of game servers from his homelab. He recently got gig from comcast, so they put in their stupid technicolor CGM4140COM AIO modem. For reasons I won't get into, he can't just get an IP passthrough modem. These modems seem to ingore port forwarding and will block external IP's trying to get to the server. Even if we find the blocked IP and allow it, after a single successful connection, it blocks it again. As a public server host, you can imagine how annoying that is. There's no global setting to turn off this behavior, and can only be mitigated by finding the blocked IP in the log and allowing it through that menu. Anyone else have experience with these consumer modems? [link] [comments] |
Need help getting Ethernet (very much a beginner) Posted: 29 Nov 2019 02:55 PM PST I don't really post on reddit much and I'm new to this thread and "networking" in general, sorry if I don't know something obvious. I guess my question is a little bit hard to explain but I'll try. Ok so on one side of my house there's a "modem"..? Connected into the wall and then a router connecting to that to extend the wifi throughout the house. So that's fine but It's not very good for any gaming on my pc in my room on the other side of the house. But, in my room there's the same thing that twists into the wall to get internet, a coax jack (like in the other room). Alright so do you think it would be possible to buy some sort of modem or box that plugs into my pc from the internet plug in the wall for ethernet while the other wifi is running? Bottom line is that I just want Ethernet to my pc without having to move it, and I was wondering how all this stuff works. Also if you are kind enough to help me, I would also like to know what kind of "box" and whether that would also effect speed. Again, I don't know much about this any of this stuff and if you would like more clarification just ask. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
diagnosing "home" network with enormous amount of switches Posted: 29 Nov 2019 02:46 PM PST Heya, I'm living in a "home" or rather small office network, with easily a dozen or so switches and routers in the building providing internet. I've recently begun observing somewhat regular spikes in latency, not tied to any particular external service I'm using, thus suspecting the local network or nearly isp station. TLDR + Question: Whats an easy way to identify a device/server causing occasional latency spikes? My idea was to just do constant route traces, until I hit a bad device, but I don't have a tool at hand for doing this with. [link] [comments] |
Need some help reconnecting a broken fiber connection Posted: 29 Nov 2019 02:30 PM PST I've worked with cat cable in the past many times, but not fiber. I moved into a new apartment building that had dish fiber. So far i'm not impressed - waited a week for them to send out a tech and they sent the wrong guy who knew nothing about fiber. Anyhow, it's a simple problem - the fiber cable that connects to their box broke. If it were a cat cable I could fix it myself in 10 minutes. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what tools I would need to fix this myself since I wont even be able to reschedule a 2nd tech until Monday. Did some quick googling and it looks like this kit has most of what I need: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075NK55KZ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=APJECVCXFHUO&psc=1 I took some pictures of the gear thats in their cabinet: it looks like that kit might have everything i need, other then the actual connector. Anyhow, would appreciate some advice on how I can fix this myself since I don't feel like waiting another 2 weeks for dish to figure it's crap out. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Help identifying unknown device Posted: 29 Nov 2019 10:08 AM PST I use pfsense 2.4.4. Every known device on my network has a static IP outside of my DHCP Scope. There was one active DHCP lease that I don't recognize. I searched the MAC and the device was made by CompalIn Compal Information (Kunshan) Co., Ltd.
I installed the nmap package in pfsesne. Running I installed nmap in my Linux Mint machine.
I can ping the host and get a response every time, so the host is up. I'm not sure what else to do. This is the first time I've tried to identify an unknown host, and the first time I've used nmap. I'm thinking of blocking the mac somehow and seeing if I notice anything not working. I also use a Cisco 3750 switch. I'm not very familiar with it yet, but I may see if I can do some MAC filtering and maybe find which port on the switch has that host. I may be slow to reply, I have a lot going on today. Edit* The device was connected to my AP, but it wasn't showing up in my APs list of connected devices. I started pinging the device, then blocked the MAC in my AP, and the pings immediately started failing. Unblocked and they shortly resumed. I changed my wireless password kicking everything off the WiFi. I'll connect the devices that I know are static. I really don't have that many wireless devices. I'm glad whatever it is is now off the network, but I still have no clue what it is/was. [link] [comments] |
Misleading info from sales reps when switching to fiber. Help! Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:52 PM PST Hey guys, I have cable internet (150mbps) for about $90/month. Im willing to sacrifice a little bit of speed for a cost reduction to $50/month for 80mbps fiber. Sales reps tell me that my fiber line is DIRECT to me. My own line. Are they lying? Does it have copper branch outs from a central hub? Do i see benefit from fiber at all? Next: i have a cable modem (arris surfboard sb6183 docsis 3.0). Its worthless if i switch to fiber right? I have a router (asus rt-n66w) its dualband gigabit whatever whatever. Can i plug fiber right into the router?? Do i need to buy a fiber modem? I really dont want to buy or rent from my isp. Help me! I want to shove the isp's shitty sales pitch back at them. Going from cox to centurylink. Ive been told its fiber with centurylink. Not dsl. [link] [comments] |
Another new network, another... Odd problem. Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:31 PM PST I'm paying for 200mbps service, and I'm getting it when hardwired and when I'm connected to 5ghz. 2.4 GHz, I'm lucky to get 50mbps. It's sporadic, sometimes I'll get 100, sometimes (like right now) I can barely get 10. It seems to change every ten minutes.. and this is within ten inches of the router, not joking, within arms reach. I have it set to channel 11 and there is only one other network in range that is on channel 11... I'd say relatively low congestion. I've tried all channels at this point, and left it set to auto. It's always bad. It's in the middle of the house, and the house is not big. 1500 sqft, relatively open floorplan. Asus ac5300, fresh factory reset with everything set up as default except Airtime Fairness is turned off for Chromecasts. Any thoughts on what I should check next, or other suggestions? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:31 PM PST Hi all, I've been getting tons of microdrops on my velop since the latest firmware update. Saw a forum post to switch ipv6 from Auto to passthrough and I seems to have solved the issue for now. Is is okay to keep this setting in passthrough? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
