How about a right to repair our phones and make sure OEMs sell parts needed for such repairs? Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:59 PM PST If lets say I own a samsung galaxy s8 or iphone whatever version, there should be the right to repair them. E-waste is a huge issue. Financially, it makes sense to keep a phone for more years. OEMs do not sell batteries or other components or force them not to be sold, ala apple. This is an absolute crime in regards to consumer rights and the environment. Furthermore, OEMs create devices, like the S10 or LG thinq whatever version, with glued in batteries and soldered usb-c ports. Oh, you wanna change the battery? It might explode and is glued in! Oh you wanna change the usbc port? Its soldered to the motherboard. So you have to change the Motherboard too! This is absolutely insane. The way things are now. This cannot go on. Secondly, the same should hold true for software. If software is unsupported, it should at least be rootable ane bootloaders should be unlockable. And none if that apple based planned obsolescence where they intentionality slow devices to "help" eith the battery. Thats just pathetic. Give me the option to buy a new battery and replace it myself. And dont fucking glue them in. [link] [comments] | ||

New Small Smartphone -- Cubot King Kong Mini 4 inch screen Posted: 29 Nov 2019 07:47 AM PST Like many people in this subreddit I've been looking for a small smartphone for over 4 years now. I've been running a Moto E2 (from 2015) with a 4.5 inch screen for years. I briefly has a Wileyfox Swift 2 but the slightly larger phone was awkward for me (I could never reach the top of the screen) and taking it out of my pocket one day I dropped it smashing the screen. Been using the Moto E2 (with Lineage) it since. I recently came across the Cubot King Kong Mini which has a 4 inch screen, is smaller than almost all phones currently on the market, the dimensions are 119 X 58 X 12.1 mm [4.68 X 2.28 X 0.47 in]. Compare this to the S10e: 142.2 x 69.9 x 7.9 mm or the XZ2 Compact 135 x 65 x 12.1 mm. The thickness or weight (122g) don't bother me. It's got a 2000mAh battery so lower than the Moto E2 (2400) but probably okay. Full specs: https://www.cubot.net/smartphones/king-kong-mini/spec.html I just use my phone for calls, texts (mostly WhatsApp and Viber), maps, as an mp3 player and occasional web-browsing. I spend most of my day on a computer so never play games or watch videos on it. Therefore the Mediatek processor probably wouldn't bother me as I won't be using anything too intense. It's a pity it's a rugged phone but that's not a dealbreaker. Currently it's only available from Gearbest and aliexpress but Amazon stock other Cubot models so hopefully it'll make it's way there soon. [link] [comments] |
