Can I tell if MSI sent me back the same laptop and refurbished it even though they said it was a new model?

Have SSD with Windows 10 Pro, connected second SSD with Windows 10 Home, now my Windows 10 Pro is deactivated

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 08:53 PM PDT

I have a SSD with Windows 10 Pro. I bought a computer that had windows 10 home on it already, and plugged in my old SDD and booted the computer from it. Now it's saying that I have a Windows 10 Home License on my old SSD and has deactivated Windows. I don't have my product key anymore, I've used programs like MagicJellyBean but I haven't been able to find it, as I have done too many hardware changes. What can I do?

    Tired of tech Support

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 07:27 PM PDT

    Hello all,

Honestly I am tired of tech support.... the reason why is I have been doing it for the last 4 years of my life. I left retail for a start in IT and I thought it would be big and bright.... But now im honestly losing sleep over the job that I am in, having to take melatonin to get a good nights sleep and I do need a change. At one point I thought I would go back to retail and become or try to work my way up as a store manager.

the reason why I have been in tech support for so long is that I worked contracts for a few years and recently landed my first full time job in IT....

Now it is like hell..... really all I do is reset passwords all day and escalate things that cannot be solved by basic troubleshooting IE clearing the cache, temp files, flush dns, gpupdate /force. The main issue I have is fairness, we serve offshore and people that do not speak good English which the issue is not the fact that they speak bad English, the issue is that they try to "work the system" to get ticket numbers for issues that are not real issues.

I believe that may day is coming soon to get out of tech support and into Software engineering...... Im studying AWS, Python and learning a lot. and also im creating a slack chat bot that will help me get off the help desk. I just have to keep hope alive and not give up :)

thanks for reading and listening. I just had to vent.

    New PC games stuttering

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:53 AM PDT

Hi guys, built a new PC consisting of a amd 3600 + 5700xt gaming edition and i'm getting stuttering in my games.

Running windows 10 1903 and i've enabled high performance etc checked and my temps are fine and nothing is thermal throttling or anything. Ram is in dual channel and running at rated speeds, everything is bone stock and running off a sufficient PSU.

I've got latest drivers installed and i get it in div 2 and csgo. Vsync is off, the fps won't dip but the game just like pauses for a second and it's really annoying.

    Any ideas?

Pentium G3258 with aparrent incompatability on an Asus B85M-G. Failure to POST.

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 11:52 PM PDT

I have been having an issue where my G3258 fails to POST with a specific motherboard of mine, and I'm having an extremely difficult time in figuring out why. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Specs:

    • ASUS B85M-G & H97i-PLUS
    • G3258 & i7-4770 ( Both LGA1150 )
    • 16GB DDR3 1600 & 8GB DDR3 1600
    • 650W & 500W PSU

Now to the problem. I installed the G3258 into the B85M-G and it failed to post, yet the fans remain on. This took me a while but then I realised that the BIOS revision was fairly old. I updated that to the latest version with explicitly states supports the G3258, yet no change. Below is a list of what I have tried getting the combination to work / verifying the components.

    ( works ) = POST; ( fails ) = No POST, fans on.

    • Test G3258 with H97i-PLUS ( works )
    • Test i7-4770 with H97i-PLUS ( works )
    • Test G3258 with B85M-G ( fails )
    • Test i7-4770 with B85M-G ( works )
    • Update B85M-G / G3258 bios to latest revision ( fails )
    • Downgrade B85M-G bios to first supported version ( fails )
    • Use three different confirmed working RAM modules ( fails )
    • Use a different working PSU ( fails )
    • Clear CMOS with three different BIOS versions ( fails )
    • Remove all attached devices & booted with one or two ( fails )

I've double and triple checked almost every step here with the same results. The CPU is 100% verified to work with the B85M-G. I have confirmed the G3258 works in another motherboard, and the motherboard with a different CPU, so I'm not sure what's going wrong. I've also checked to see if the case is shorting, but that's not it. The only thing I have not tested is using a video card with it, but the CPU outputs video with a different motherboard, and the motherboard's video works with a different CPU.

Could it really just be bad luck with a specific combination?

    Thanks.

PC won’t boot, makes a beeping sound

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 12:48 AM PDT

Hello, i'm not a tech savvy person but i know that there are really smart people on here so i thought i'd ask for help

My computer was suffering from blue screens, so i was following the instructions to try and fix the issue and one was to clean the RAM.

I took out my RAM and dusted the sockets and put them back in, they're even and locked in. But when i start up my computer, it makes one long beep, a short beep, then it pauses before making three long beeps.

The beeps continue like this, three long beeps and a pause before more three long beeps. I'm hoping ive just done something ridiculously dumb and that i don't have to replace something.

I will answer any questions to the best of my ability, thanks for any help!

I've reinstalled drives, disabled windows driver settings. Even if i downscale to 720p i only get 60-70fps. I set FPS cap to 300 too

Checking file systems and disks: a few hints

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 10:27 PM PDT

    1. Have a verifiable backup of the computer – stored separately (not on the file system or disk that is to be checked)
    2. verify file systems
    3. be prepared to replace any failing disk
    4. perform thorough checks of disks
    5. be prepared to repair file systems.

    File systems

If you use Apple's modernised Disk Utility, beware:

    • the massive green check/tick that typically appears after a verification routine can be misleading.

In some cases, Apple's green sign of success merely signals that a routine is complete – without displaying file system warnings or errors that occurred during the routine. Screen shot to follow.

    Disks

    I typically use:

    • GSmartControl to quickly tell whether there's a red alert for any S.M.A.R.T. attribute
    • HDAT2 6.5 to thoroughly check hard disk drives (HDD) and solid state hybrid drives (SSHD).

The most powerful test in HDAT2 is R/W/R/C (read/write/read/compare):

Read defined block of sectors into memory 1, write this block of sectors onto device, read the same defined block of sectors into memory 2 and compare memory 1 and 2

I'll add some information re: easy ways to boot and use GSmartControl and HDAT2.

There'll be a plethora of alternative utilities; this post is not intended to be comprehensive.

    Windows

If you schedule a check and repair to occur at system startup time, and if you leave the system to 'do its thing':

    • after the event, do not assume that necessary repairs were performed.

In some cases, Windows will automatically restart itself in response to an imperfection – a silent failure to check, repair or record whatever was wrong.

After Windows starts, use the console to seek and view the result of the check. If there's no record of the check, then aim to use something more powerful (e.g. HDAT2) for the next check.

    Logic, order

With some types of imperfection, simply writing to the (entire) disk can cause the disk to fail in a way that will prevent boot; and it may be impossible to reinstall the same operating system to the disk.

When planning (for example) a fresh installation of Windows:

    • better for a R/W/R/C routine to expose a disk imperfection at the earliest opportunity, than to waste time installing an OS that might be inexplicably, subtly troublesome to the end user.

Similarly, better for a disk imperfection to be exposed before attempting to repair a file system. If you don't, and if you're unlucky, the writes from a supposed repair will worsen the situation.

    Side note

This post was originally drafted as a comment in the /r/waterfox area, for a case where instability was not easily attributable to an application environment.

The hints are quite generic, so I chose /r/techsupport instead.

Huge FPS drop when moving aggressively on screen in game

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 08:20 PM PDT

I have no idea why my pc drops crazy frames when I move aggressively. When it drops, it lags a little too, little micro stutters. At first at thought it was my cpu settings thru ryzen master or my gpu settings thru the app that comes with it (Nvidia Gtx 1080). I built the pc in April and has been working great. I update everything consistently and whenever the new updates roll in. Maybe it's the settings I have them set(cpu, gpu). It's possible that it's over over clocked to the point that it's stuttering and dropping frames like I'm saying so.

    PC not auto-booting into windows.

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:51 AM PDT

I did a fresh windows install about a month back and ever since then, whenever i boot it, I get the bios splash screen followed by a black screen with a blinking text indicator, as if it's "thinking" about something.
I have to hit F12 to enter the boot selector and select Boot Option #1 if i want windows.
I have no other operating system files on any other drive. I have an ISO of W7 on my external but even when it isn;t plugged in i still have this issue.

TL;DR: Can I set a default boot disk?

    specs if necessary:
    Motherboard: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 Revision 5

When I close the lid of my laptop, it restarts "silently" when there is a pending windows update and freezes on my BIOS password.

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:50 AM PDT

I have a startup password that is set at the BIOS level (more secure than Windows password) on my laptop.

The problem is, when my laptop goes to Sleep or Hibrenate when I close my computer lid, and there is some pending Windows update (even if it did not start yet), there is some kind of "silent" restart.

At that "silent" restart, my laptop gets stuck on the BIOS password, and gets very hot and drains the battery (if not plugged in). So I could come back after 8 hours or so with the lid closed, and the laptop is super hot or the battery is all drained.

Any idea how to fix this?

Of course removing the BIOS password will fix this, but I would not want to do that...

HP laptop is plugged in but not charging

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:46 AM PDT

    I am using a HP laptop (LAPTOP-840UCA4M)

So I was using my laptop when i realised that it showed that it only had 15% battery even though it was plugged in.

I hovered over the battery icon and it showed the words "15% available, plugged in". I thought it was odd as (i think) it usually shows "15% available, plugged in, charging".

SO i monitored it for a while and realised that the number was not increasing. Unplugging the charger will cause it to go into low battery mode. When plugged in, the screen lights up as if it is charging, but the battery percentage does not increase.

I restarted my computer and windows automatically updated. I tried updating the battery drivers in device manager, but that did not change anything.

I plugged in my portable charger (for my phone) into my computer to charge it earlier today, could that have spoilt my laptop battery?

    Thank you.

(Please Help!) Brand new HP Omen 17-an130ca Monitor Ghosting Problem

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:39 AM PDT

Hey guys, this is my first post here, so please bear with me! I know this isn't -just- a monitor, being a laptop and all, but I'm almost positive that the issue is with the monitor / screen it's self.

Like the title says, I bought a brand new HP Omen 17-an130ca a couple days ago, and noticed something pretty quickly... The screen is pretty blurry when I tried out my first few games on it. I thought at first that maybe it was just because I wasn't used to the fancy new 120hz screen that it comes with; my usual screen is only 75hz. Regardless, I started to look around online, where I came across the term 'ghosting.' I looked around both here and on google images for examples of ghosting, and figure it's about the closest thing to what I am experiencing: a sort of saturated glow / blur following moving images, VERY noticeable in games. Trying out the UFO test from Blur Busters showed that it wasn't just an in game thing, but seemingly everywhere on the PC. Even the mouse has a glow to it when it moves (not the usual mouse-duplication-trail that I know is a setting in windows.)

    Here are some specs:

    Microsoft Windows 10 Home
    Intel Core i7-8750H @ 2.20 GHz, 2208 Mhz, 6 Cores 12 Logical Processors
    GeForce GTX 1070 NVIDIA
    16 GB RAM
    BaseBoard HP 846A Version 98.21
    BIOS Version/Date AMI F.09 2019-04-24

I plugged in an external monitor (the one that I use with my desktop PC) to my Omen 17 and tried the same games / the same tests, and noticed quite a bit of a difference, despite being plugged into the laptop. I contacted HP support and used the live agent chat service to rule out a number of things. We updated BIOS, NVIDIA Drivers, as well as all Windows 10 updates available, and still the issue persists only on the laptop's main screen.

I've tried playing with G sync, Latency mode, global V sync, in game V sync, and changed the refresh rate from 120 hz down to 60 hz with no change (although from reading on here, apparently 120hz over 60hz is supposed to help solve tearing / ghosting, right?) None of these have made any difference at all. Neither does raising or lowering any of my settings for the games, or messing around with saturation or contrast anywhere.

From what I can tell, there is no information online that will tell me what the HP Omen 17's monitor response time is (in MS or otherwise) , only the refresh rate in Hertz. For reference, the monitor I have plugged in externally is a 75hz @ 7.5ms

I've also read online that some other versions of HP Omen have had this issue, so I'm not sure if this is just the laptop's standard, or if I have a defective model.

If anyone has any tips or advice, or experience with this issue and / or with this laptop, it would be greatly appreciated! I'm at a total loss.

Does ASrock x470 Taichi (non ultimate) with AMD Ryzen 7 3700X setup support ECC memory?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:38 AM PDT

    Hello!

I'm using my system for coding and deep learning.

    Here is my setup:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
    Motherboard: ASRock x470 Taichi
GPU: Asus RTX 2070 Super Turbo 8GB Evo
    Memory: I'm looking for it:)
    Storage: Samsung 970 Pro 512GB M.2 (MZ-V7P512BW)
PSU: Seasonic Prime Ultra Titanium 850W

I'm looking for 32GB (2x16GB) ECC memory kit for ASrock x470 Taichi (non ultimate) with AMD Ryzen 7 3700X setup that will be running without problems.

Does anyone run ECC memory with that setup? Are there any problems?

Can anyone recommend me suitable ECC memory kit?

EDIT 1: ASRock x470 Taichi spec says that motherboard (at least with AMD Matisse - Zen 2 3xxx CPUs) does support ECC memory - [https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/X470%20Taichi/index.asp#Specification].

    Mac - reboot loop help

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:30 AM PDT

    (X-post r/applehelp)

TL;DR: Updated to Catalina - stuck in reboot loop unable to reach recovery partition

    Hi.

I have a '18 15" pro Touchbar (not sure about the exact spec) and wanted to update to Catalina. Now the Mac is in a reboot loop after what I presume is a failed update.

I've tried the regular resets (NV, P) but that didn't help. I'm also unable to reach the recovery partition. It's as if the keyboard doesn't respond as none of the procedures acted as they should do when you perform them.

I've tried to plug in an external keyboard but still no response.

Any idea on how to fix this? Apple says they have a 25 day service time, and that's far too long without a laptop.

My brand new PC keeps freezing and I think I know why..

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:27 AM PDT

Hey everybody, first time posting here and I'm in a bit of a pickle. I am by no means an expert when it comes to building or setting up computers but anyway.

I bought new PC parts a couple days ago and spent yesterday evening putting it all together. I got it to post on the first try and managed to install Windows 10 via USB after a few failed attempts. Windows is now booting on a Samsung 970 EVO 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD. I was so relieved to see it all up and running but after a few minutes of installing some programs I got a blue-screen and an instant shut-dotn. Turned it back on, tried again, this time it just froze. Couldn't move the mouse, no error message, had to restart. This happened maybe 1-2 minutes after turning it on again. Rinse and repeat for about 5 more times before I gave up and went to bed.

One thing I did notice though: The performance tab in Task Manager showed my Samsung SSD at 60-100% capacity when the read/write speeds were well below 60 MBps.

PC Specs for more info:AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

    Asus B450-F Strix

    Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super

Corsair 2x8GB 3200 MHz (I also set it to 3200 MHz in the BIOS to match)

    Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD 500GB

I'm honestly at a loss, I don't know how to fix this. I hope you have some ideas. Thanks :)

    Edit: RAM size

Purple lines rising from bottom of screen, then it cuts off a couple pixels from the bottom

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:26 AM PDT

I noticed that I couldnt see whether I had things pinned to my taskbar open, so I restarted my pc, and found out why.

Minutes after startup, seemingly randomly, in the span of a couple seconds, purple lines started rising from the bottom of my screen up to about a third, then dissapearing and starting again. This repeated 5ish times. Now I can't see the little bars below taskbar icons again. There is a thin bar at the bottom of my screen going alongst the whole length of it under which my mouse dissapears. I can not screenshot it - it is not present in screenshots.
