    Mayonnaise in laptop charging port

    Posted: 08 Oct 2019 04:22 PM PDT

Fuckin' mayo packet in my backpack squirted the entirety of its oily contents into the HDMI, USB, and charging port of my dell laptop. using Q-tips, a vaccuum cleaner, and toothpicks, I did the best i could to get the disgusting mess out, but now my charger gives me an "AC power adapter type cannot be determined" error whenever i try to plug it in and charge it, telling me it wont charge. can ANYBODY offer anymore advice? the charging port has a post in the middle making it extremely difficult to find anything small but strong enough to clean around it. visually, all the ports look decently clean, but i know there still some oily residue inside them. if yall have any suggestions, please shoot them my way

Very weird bug where app icons just move around upon turning on

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 02:46 AM PDT

So I can't really remember why this happened or how it happened, but essentially every time I boot on my PC, a few app icons just move to an almost seemingly random spot, then I just move then back, only for the same thing to happen again later on another boot.

    I've tried:

    - Scanning for a virus, yes I did a thorough scan, found nothing

    - Did sfc /scannow, found nothing

    - Deleted the app icon, which fixed steam but things like word or wallpaper engine still move around

I have no idea what the heck happened or why it's happening and it's really annoying my nice app layout, any ideas anyone?

How do I maximize my hardware for gaming?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2019 11:57 PM PDT

I have a MSI GE75 laptop configured with an RTX 2060, intel i7-8750H and 16GB of RAM on a single channel. I mostly play league of legends with a handful of other games on the side, but I'd like to know how to maximize my computer's hardware. My issue is that with these specs, I feel like I'm not really getting the most out of what I payed for given the fact that with max settings, my FPS will drop down to 90-70 but my GPU and CPU aren't really even being pushed at all. When I first noticed this, I tried using MSI afterburner to see if I was being bottlenecked by my hardware and I really wasn't even close. GPU usage % peaked at about 50% and my CPU cores peaked at just below 40% after I played a normal game of LoL with max settings on. What really bothered me was that when I went to my internet cafe in the neighborhood, the FPS never drops below 140 despite it having much worse specs compared to my setup (GTX 1060, i3-8300, 8GB RAM) Is there anything else I can do to optimize my FPS?

Use selected adapter for Mobile Hotspot in Windows 10?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 01:51 AM PDT

I currently live in a apartment where there's no wifi. The nearest wifi connection available to me is from my unni across the street. None of my devices can connect to it because the signal is so weak over here. Until I bought a USB High Gain Wi-Fi Adapter, which I then used a USB extension and taped the adapter to my window. I can connect to the wifi now on my laptop, which I intend to create a Mobile Hotspot on my laptop so that other devices can connect to the internet through it.

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but I would want the Mobile Hotspot be transmitted through the internal wifi card on my laptop instead of the USB one, for stability and speed reasons. But when I turn on the hotspot, the internal wifi card in my laptop detects the SSID of my hotspot, and the USB adapter doesn't. So essentially it means that the USB adapter is transmitting the hotspot (at the same time it's connected to the wifi across the street. This is imo not ideal, because it essentially cuts the speed to half, and from my experience there's some stability issues with setup like this.

So is there anyway that I can explicitly choose the adapter (internal wifi card in this case) to transmit the hotspot?

    Connecting laptop to a TV

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 01:49 AM PDT

So I bought a samsung tv, I have lenovo laptop and when I try to connect then together with HDMI cable, at first it's everything ok but when I close the laptop I'm getting like 20fps or less. I've only tried watching some movies on this setup I dont know if games are working better. But the strange thing is that while my cover is opened everything works fine (sometimes some minor stuttering).

    What I tried:

    - all settings from windows+p options (like dual mode, only second display etc.)

    - I've checked 2 different TV's and there is the same problem.

    - It's working with my old samsung tv that has like 10 years - this tv is 1080p new tv's are 4k

    - I'm thinking of buying new HDMI cable but when the cover is opened it's working ok.

    What I didn't try:

    - game settings on TV (read about it today at work)

    - didn't try other laptop

    - making the TV the primary display

    Any other ideas?

    Thank you in advance.

Is there a smartview for other TV's?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 01:42 AM PDT

I use smart view slot at home (samsung tv). Recently I got emby and it is nice, but it doesnt relay the quality of videos at the same rate or quality as the smart view. I have been searching around to see what sony or kg do to stream 4k homemade movies from computer to tv. I want to watch my movies in the highest quality possible like smart view does. This being said, I'm looking into buying a new tv and this feature is what is stopping me from moving away from samsung.

First step to diagnose faulty mechanical drive?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 01:29 AM PDT

I should have salvaged the data from the drive back when it was merely causing crashes and boot errors.

As it is, my Windows 10 system doesn't appear to successfully boot when this drive is plugged in (the problem drive is not the boot drive). Instead, I see the POST screen, then my user profile, then screen goes black and stays that way, failing to boot.

Probably going to get a hot swappable disk dock and pray the drive has enough life left in it to allow me to salvaged the contents. Any thoughts on if there's a chance this will be viable, given the situation?

That aside, are there any steps worth trying to salvage the contents, short of selling an internal organ to pay for a data recovery tech?

Running ADB without USB Debugging enabled?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 12:36 AM PDT

Hey guys so I dropped my phone Samsung A70 and the screen is spoilt. I can't see any display right now but the phone still vibrates when I hold on the volume keys. So now I really wanna backup my files on my phone to my PC. But I didn't enable usb debugging beforehand on my phone.

I've run ADB on my PC cmd prompt and it shows my phone as unauthorised. How can I bypass this?

I can't seem to get my phone into recovery mode either. After holding the power and vol up key for long, the phone vibrates for some time and then, when I run adb devices the phone is no longer listed.

Thank you so much I would really love to get my photos back...

Restoring system to a preview date taking too much time

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:51 AM PDT

Yesterday I wanted to restore windows to a previous date because I had a problem with a virus/malware and couldn't find a fast solution other than wait 48 hours to use Spyware. The only backup was one from 4 months ago. I left my pc working during the night thinking it would be ready. 7 hours passed and it's still working, the message being "Wait until the files and windows configuration is restoring. Restoring the system is restoring the Register..." (don't know if I translated it okay since it was in spanish) Does anyone know if this take that much time? What should I do?

NVIDIA Driver Update // Monitor Resoultion Issues

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 12:04 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

Recently, my graphics card updated and the resolution on one of my monitors went from 1920x1080 to 1280x1024. I feel like I've tried everything from unplugging/resetting the monitor, taking out the the VGA cable (which is hooked up through a DisplayPort converter to hook into my Geforce 970), rolling back the driver, and most recently cleaning it with DDU before doing a fresh install of the latest (last working) driver. I was able to get the resolution to recognize 1920x1080; however, the quality of the browser or anything I move over to this monitor from my main monitor is very poor.

The monitor I am having issues with is an ASUS monitor, and this problem hasn't occurred for me before.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

SSD not working in laptop anymore

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:43 AM PDT

Hi. Hoping someone here can help me with this problem since this is the tech support community and I need some tech support now.

I have an HP Pavilion G6 with 3rd gen i5 and 8GB RAM. The SSD was working perfectly fine. I had windows installed on it and then decided to install Debian 10.0.0 x64. it was working well too.

One of the USB ports on the laptop was not working so I opened it up and fixed the problem. I am in the IT field so im not useless with hardware. to my knowledge, I did not damage anything in the process.

After putting everything back together, all was well and the USB port I fixed was working well too. Except the laptop wasn't detecting the SSD anymore. it gave me error F30, meaning it doesn't detect the hard drive and gives a message about not seeing any bootable device to boot from and telling me to install an OS.

After a few reboots, removing and reconnecting the SSD properly, I thought the SSD must have died in the process so I tested it in 2 other machines. its working 100%. I connected it as a second drive in a desktop and am able to use it as you would any drive. Hard disk sentinel reports 100% health, good temperature and no errors whatsoever. I connected it as the primary and only drive in another HP celeron laptop and installed windows onto it using a flash drive. worked well too with no errors. I then reconnected it into the G6, thinking it will work now but still the same problem. (F30).

with the SSD in the G6, the laptop is able to boot other media like the flash drive containing the windows setup but the setup wizard tells me there are no available drives to install to.

I tried a few things on the laptop and so far, obviously, no luck.

    what I did...

Went into the BIOS/UEFI and loaded defaults

tried changing various options like enabling and disabling legacy mode

    disabled secure boot

tried various boot orders (SSD is not seen in the BIOS)

removed the battery, CMOS battery and charger to fully reset it.

updated the BIOS (already on the latest version)

attempted to start up while holding win + B (this doesn't work though. I just get a black screen and flashing caps lock light)

changed hard drive format between GPT and MBR before inserting it into the G6.

I get the F30 error with the SSD connected but without any drive I just get a generic error that says something along the lines of no bootable media and press any key to retry etc.

I inserted another hard drive and it works normally in the G6. I'm using it as we speak but, as you probably know, there's a huge performance difference between a HDD and an SSD so I want the SSD to work in the G6 again because the things I do puts a lot of load on RAM and disk. even after booting from a HDD in the G6, removing it and reinserting the SSD makes no difference.

from the F30 error screen you can press F2 to start some testing. I select the Hard drive test and whether choosing the quick or long test it just comes back with the same errors after about 1 second. it says "SMART Check : Not Installed" and "Short DST : Not Installed". I don't know what that's about but its obviously related.

So in short... the SSD worked in the G6 but doesn't anymore. the SSD still works perfectly in any other machine I tested it in. another HDD still works perfectly in the G6. I dont have another SSD at the moment to even test it with and not able to buy a replacement but even if I could, I don't know if it will work.

    Laptop:

    HP Pavilion G6

    i5 3210m

    8GB DDR3 (2x 4GB modules @ 1600)

    Radeon 7670m

    BIOS Version F.27

Optical drive installed so no HDD caddy

Working with a Western Digital Blue 500GB 2.5" HDD

the SSD is a Western Digital Green 2.5" SATA

Random Error: Windows Plays Device Connect/Disconnect Sound, Screen Goes Dark Momentarily

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:40 AM PDT

    Title, for the most part.

I've exhausted a lot of resources trying to find a solution to this problem, and I'm baffled. At seemingly random times, my PC will emit the device/USB disconnect and connect sound, accompanied by my screen turning dark for less than a second. After this event, everything returns to normal. Its frequency is hard to be exact with, but it seems to occur between every 5 minutes and 30 minutes. It does not appear to occur more frequently when my PC is under load; again, it just seems very random. Idle, gaming, doesn't matter.

To my knowledge, there is no reference of this occurring in the event log and all of my devices are working properly. Notably, this only became an issue after I moved to a new apartment. Perhaps something happened during the moving process, or maybe it's just a coincidence.

I've read a lot of threads started by people having similar issues, but none seemed to have a quality fix. I've seen suggestions ranging from reseating the GPU to testing an alternate DVI cable, both of which I have tried. I'm hoping to avoid investing in a new monitor (another suggestion I've seen), and call it a gut feeling, but I really don't think the monitor is the issue.

All of my drivers are updated, and of course, restarting does not fix the problem.

    Specs:

    - Windows 10

    - ASUS VA326H Monitor

    - Intel Core i7-7700k

    - EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC

    - 16GB DDR4/3000MHz Dual Channel Memory

    - 16GB Intel® Optane™ Memory Accelerator M.2 PCIe NVMe + 2TB SATA III Hard Drive Combo

    - MSI Z270-A Pro ATX

    Any advice is appreciated!

Finished building my PC, but my screen won't display anything

    Posted: 08 Oct 2019 08:08 PM PDT

    Hi everyone.

I just finished building my new computer, and my monitor won't work with it. My MSI tomahawk max apparently only outputs DVI while my screen (Viewsonic vx2457) only accepts VGA, DP and HDMI. I'm pretty bummed out by this. What should be my course of action here ? Is there a cable that somehow converts DVI to DP or should I just admit defeat and get a new DVI-compatible screen ?

    Thank you.

Edit: Solved ! Turns out I'm just a huge dummy.

    Very odd monitor problem

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:37 AM PDT

Needed info: (model: viewsonic vx2265wm) Connected via DVI to a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 running Windows 10, other 2 monitors are both the same model of ASUS and have no issues

Well reading through drama on some gaming subreddits i came across a like that instantly fuzzes out one of my three monitors and it's very odd. What kind of problem even is this????

For a little background im not sure what the monitor even is, my roommate gave it to me a couple months ago and this has happened on one other link. It's not even the full website that does it, it is very specific in some odd way.
    https://music.apple.com/hk/album/phoenix-single/1480205370

for some background, these are new songs recently released by the game company "riot games" for their game league of legends.

Can anyone give me any kind of idea why this is happening?

    Some video for clarity: https://imgur.com/mSh6vbz

My apologize if I did something incorrect, if anymore information is needed please ask. even if i can't get this fixed I would like to know what's causing this because it's just perplexing to me.

I'm looking for a streaming service that will...

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:37 AM PDT

    Hi r/techsupport!

If this is the wrong place for this or if there is a better location, please let me know.

I'll start by saying that I am a teacher. Since I teach high school AP classes, the content can be a bit rigorous and therefore, I do weekly online streams with my students in the evening to help them understand and review content.

Up to this point, I have used Google Hangouts and it has worked fine. However, this year, some students have started asking if I could share the streams afterwards. A lot of them have very busy schedules and cannot always make the times that I set but want to watch it afterwards.

I know Google used to have Hangouts on Air to let you upload a video after it ended, but I understand they did away with that.

I have also tried screen casting programs (I tried Snagit) but the problem is that it seems to struggle with really large files. My streams last over an hour sometimes and that is a really big video file.

So I'm essentially looking for the following features. Something that will...

    1. Allow live streaming with my mic and webcam
    2. Allow screen sharing, so I can present a slideshow while doing the stream. I really I would like to have my webcam in a small box on the screen and the rest of the screen to be my presentation (like you see in YouTube reaction videos).
    3. Allow interaction with my students via chat or their own microphones.
    4. Allow me to download the video and share it afterwards.

    Any ideas? Thank you!
