Trouble removing windows from a dual boot setup Posted: 09 Oct 2019 12:44 PM PDT So guys,Im new to linux so sorry for my ignorance with the terms. I installed linux mint today on a separate partition than the windows and everything was fine until I decided to delete the windows partition, which I did by deleting the partition and then making a new one with GParted. Now when I restarted I cant boot the linux ,it says no boot device found.I tried booting live from the usb and installing grub with Grub Repair but it doesnt help. When I boot from the usb I can see my files that are on hard drive so they are not damaged. I would be thankful if someone could help, all of this is very frustrating.Thanks. [link] [comments] |
My laptop can't connect to the internet via WiFi Posted: 08 Oct 2019 11:05 PM PDT Apparently there are no WiFi drivers in my system, after switching to Ubuntu. I have no other way of connecting to the internet and the only other device I have is this mobile, how do I fix this issue? [link] [comments] |

What's the best cheap notebook I can buy that's Linux compatible? Posted: 09 Oct 2019 11:38 AM PDT I'm looking for a notebook to carry around to class with me. Essentially all I need to do with it is run Libre, run Brave, maybe Spotify, maybe Lightroom/Photoshop, I can do everything else on my bigger/bulkier gaming laptop. Most recommendations I've seen surround the xiaomi air, the XPS or thinkpad X1s but I don't feel like I need the power that they provide and they're also out of my price range. Does anyone have recommendations on a fairly cheap (absolute max 500, preferred max like 300-400) notebook that can run Linux fine out of the box or with minimal tweaking? [link] [comments] |
which partitions are necessary during setup Posted: 09 Oct 2019 08:19 AM PDT i'm setting up Linux and i'm curious about which sort of partitions are essential. so far i'm going to have: Root partition [majority of space logical] Boot partition [1gb primary] Swap space [8gb as i have 4gb ram logical] is there any other essential partitions I should use? assuming i can use Root so there is no need for a home section. what are your thoughts, how would the experienced people set it up? Best distro for gamers? I was thinking about Pop!os. I never used Linux before. Posted: 09 Oct 2019 01:46 PM PDT What distro do you recommend for gamers? If it matters i mainly play Leaguue of legends, CS:GO and minecraft. [link] [comments] |
Questions on usage when I am connected to a workstation. Posted: 09 Oct 2019 01:34 PM PDT I connect to a remote cluster workstation. To be able to use any software installed, I have to run
for each software. And I typically always use the same software. Is there a way where I can do this automatically when I log on to the server? Is it safe? I would like to share a folder with "rwx" permissions with one other person. Is there any way to do so? I'm very scared to use the server freely. Is there any way I can mess it up for others? I would assume not, as I don't have the privileges to do so, but just in case. [link] [comments] |
So I am trying to install Steam with Linux Posted: 09 Oct 2019 01:23 PM PDT echo 'deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list That is the code I am using and I keep getting this response E: Malformed line 3 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (type) E: The list of sources could not be read. How do I fix this? [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu - Scrolling is laggy/choppy Posted: 09 Oct 2019 08:51 AM PDT I am experiencing lag/choppiness when scrolling. It seems to be mostly in Firefox. I have tried some guides on fixing it but no luck. Any advice is appreciated. I am using Ubuntu 19.04 and a Dell XPS 13 9380. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Can't use sudo because my stupid a** changed the owner from root to me. Posted: 09 Oct 2019 10:46 AM PDT sudo: /usr/bin/sudo must be owned by uid 0 and have the bit setuid stablished (sorry if I made any mistakes, I have my computer in spanish and don't know the exact translation). Anyways, how do you solve this? I have asked yesterday but nothing helped me, please, I know I should search the answer to learn about this, but I am desperate, I have been searching everything but everything is too complicated to my level of understanding in the terminal or just doesn't work. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Having some wifi and Bluetooth issues.(kubuntu 19.04) Posted: 09 Oct 2019 10:42 AM PDT I just started using linux and it seems as if I can't use my wifi to work properly somehow. Im usually keeping my Ethernet cable in so I can actually use my computer but when I plug it out the wireless wifi doesn't work although it said it's connected. No bug pop-ups or errors, nothing. Also, I've been trying to connect my controller to my computer it doesn't show up at all or any other Bluetooth connection I have. Bluetooth works fine for my controller on all of my devices so it's definitely a issue with the computer itself. And same here,no errors or bug pop-ups show up. Dunno if this is because I'm missing something or a actual issue so any help appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Iosevka font is very stretched out.... Posted: 09 Oct 2019 10:17 AM PDT Hi, I just switched to Iosevka font from SourceCodePro, and it seems to0 stretched out in the vertical direction. If with SourceCodePro I could fit about 4 neofetches vertically in the terminal, with Iosevka I can hardly get three... The font looks really cool, but being stretched out makes it looks not very pleasing... What could be the problem here? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Oct 2019 05:35 PM PDT I've been messing around with ssh, and I've been going into my laptop from my cellphone which is relatively simple and straightforward, but I wish I could do a bit more. For instance, sometimes I'll plug up my laptop to my television and watch movies this way, and it would be nice, if from my bed, I could ssh into my laptop and when I enter "firefox" in the commandline, it'll attempt to open firefox on my laptop instead of on my phone like it currently does. Is this possible? Same thing for viewing documents would be nice. Currently if I try to open a video or something with the command "$ mpv [video file]" it just says vide not available or something like that. Sometimes it says, no display currently connected, or no X session or something of that nature. So yeah, is there any solution to this, or is this just the nature of ssh and how it works? Also, is there any other kind of software/protocol or whatever it's called that you guys would recommend I use over ssh? Also, sorry if this is formatted strangley at all, I'm trying out rtv, the reddit commandline client, and I'm posting from there and it's kind of hard to tell how exactly this is going to end up looking, since it's all just a big mass of text against a plain terminal for me. Anyhow, thanks for anyhelp guys. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Oct 2019 09:44 AM PDT The final step in a CTF I was doing was with this command: find . -exec /bin/sh -p \; -quit Can someone explain me this command cause I dont understand it fully. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to isolate two DEs? Posted: 09 Oct 2019 05:46 AM PDT I am using Unity as my primary for long and now wanna experiment different docks, panels and other tweaks and themes on the Gmone DE that the Ubuntu 18.04 comes installed with. But any new tweaks or addons will effect the Unity DE too since its the same OS. So I just wanna know if there is a way to alter Gnome without it having any effect on the Unity desktop [link] [comments] |
Laggy experience with Zorin OS and other distros Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:10 AM PDT Hi! I have a laptop (with Intel Apollo Lake N3450 Quad Core 1.1GHz, up to 2.2GHz, 6GB DDR3 RAM), but my experience with windows 10 was fairly smooth (and windows 10 has a lot of bloat). I tried and switch to a linux distro (zorin OS) and I though the experience would be fairly smooth, but it is laggy so far. Do I have to install some other drivers? Graphics card drivers maybe? I would like your advice about this. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Graphic problems with game running via wine Posted: 09 Oct 2019 02:58 AM PDT I was trying to run Elex via Lutris. It runs per se, but graphics looks terrible compared to trailers and videos on Youtube. Especially that granular effect on people models. All graphic settings in game are set on high and ultra. I think it has something to do with wine. What could be done in this situation? [link] [comments] |
Free resources to supplement my college course? Posted: 09 Oct 2019 08:31 AM PDT So as the title suggests, I am in a programming course at college and one of the classes is an intro to Linux. I have found a decent LinkedIn learning course for the command line and it seems to give some good examples and things to practice. Does anyone know of a free course, interactive or otherwise where I can practise using commands and building directories? I have used the website LinuxJourney before and it was quite helpful. Thanks :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:43 AM PDT title pretty much explains it, i'm new to linux, i have no idea what i'm doing, i can't find tutorials online I'm running the latest version of ubuntu on both computers, with the default DE on the Surface and Cinnamon on the desktop, they're both on the same network, one connected over wifi and one over ethernet, the surface has an amazing screen and pen support, but my main workload is 3D modelling and it just isn't good enough for that, someone suggested i use remote desktop to use it as a drawing tablet but i've no idea how to do it and google ins't helping [link] [comments] |
How can I make a usb flash drive normal again? Posted: 08 Oct 2019 06:43 PM PDT How can I make a usb flash drive normal again? As in, I "dd" a iso file onto it to install an os' but now I would like to make it a normal usb drive again. That way I can use it for storing files or transferring them between a Windows PC and my Linux system. Is there a one line command like of like when I used the "dd" command? [link] [comments] |
