What are the chances of something going wrong while building?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 02:39 AM PDT

My friend and I were having a discussion on whether I should build my pc or buy a pre built. The main argument he had is that something could break, which is a fair point. What are the chances of something actually going wrong? I feel like just taking your time while building will decrease the chances significantly

So I'm planning to buy a 144 hz monitor and planning to keep my old one which is a 60hz for dual screen I've heard you can have some problems with it

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:59 AM PDT

Hmm I've googled through this I heard that you can open both but if you're playing a game on the 144 hz one then you open something in the other monitor the qfps on the 144 hz would be limited to 60 fps since gpu cant run 144hz and 60 hz at the same time

Also I have an Aorus Xtreme Rtx 2060 and an I7 6700k with 2x8gb 2400 mhz ram

And my current monitor is an acer r231 1080p 60hz ips panel plan to keep it for video editing purposes

    Should I get a 1440p 144hz monitor with a GTX 1080 and Ryzen 5 2600 combo?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 05:53 AM PDT

Just curious is I should stick to 1080p gaming at 144hz or if I can bump it up to a 1440p 144hz monitor with those specs. Reason I am asking is because my main monitor crapped out and I'm looking for another one. I will be sticking with a 24" if that has any factor into making a decision. Thanks!

Edit: Thank you for your input everyone. I have decided to go with a 27" 1440p 144hz Monitor!

    Are blower GPUs that bad?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 07:00 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I recently built a pc using a 5700 XT reference card. This build will eventually be used as a race simulator once my wallet heals but after reading multiple comments about heat issues, I'm starting the think that I may need to invest in another card sooner rather then later.

For those who are using reference cards, are you noticing any issues? If you did, what card did you swap to? Is there anything I can do to safety get the advertised performance without damaging the card?

    Thanks

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 11:39 AM PDT

So I mixed up my power cords for my screen and PC. Does which one is which matter (can I plug either into the PC or screen)? If not, how do I figure out which is which?

Looking to upgrade CPU, MOBO and RAM in pc. How will this affect Windows?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:46 AM PDT

Hi all. So my girlfriend wants to upgrade the aforementioned parts in her pc. Simple enough job but I've never replaced a motherboard in a pc that wasn't brand new before.

I know that windows is tied to your motherboard so replacing it messes with your OS but I'm not sure in what ways. So what do I need to do before and after replacing these components to make sure we don't experience any issues?

    Thanks in advance!

    i9 9900K vs. R9 3900X

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 11:14 AM PDT

    Hello All,

I posted yesterday regarding a new build I was thinking of doing with a 9900K. After getting a few PM's regarding 3700X (or 3900X) I decided to see what it would look like to build with that instead.

I have 2 builds ready to roll. I have access to a MicroCenter for CPU / Mobo (once 3900X are actually in stock) which should put them within dollars of eachother. What do you think makes more sense?

I'm gaming currently 1080P, but within a couple months 144HZ (and most likely 1440P). I occasionally stream, but I'll be relegating my old PC as a dedicated streaming box so I can offload some of the overhead for that.

I'm thinking for future proofness (if that exists) and for platform longevity (PCIE 4.0 for M.2 in a year or 2? it may actually make sense for me to go AMD, even though I've been a long time Intel person.

    Thoughts?

I’m a pc noob and need some friendly advice (video editing specs)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:37 PM PDT

I'll start by saying I am an aspiring filmmaker. I am currently a full time photographer but I am not switching to focus on video. Here's my problem I have a camera that shoots in 4K and 1080 120fps and 100 mbs

    These are my PC SPECS

    Graphics Card: GTS 660 Processor: intel(r) core(tm) i7-3770 cup @3.40GHz (8CPUs), ~ 3.4HGz Ram: 8GB

    I should mention I have a Alienware v1

My graphics card and Ram are old/low. If I upgrade just the ram will I have enough processing power to take on editing video?

Would someone be kind enough to look over my first build before I order everything? I have ZERO experience

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 02:56 PM PDT

    Howdy folks

I'm putting together the parts for my first pc build, and I'm a complete newby. I've used pcpartpicker to choose them, and the site tells me that there's no imcompatibilities found, but I figured I'd check here as well, better safe than sorry right? I'm a newly graduated videographer, and will be editing 4K resolution 60fps drone footage, as well as try my hand at some VFX work. I'd also like to try VR gaming at some point. My build is as follows, any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

CPU: Intel Core i9-9900K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor CPU Cooler: Coller Master Hyper 212 Black Edition 42 CFM CPU Cooler Motherboard: MSI Z390-A PRO ATX LGA 1151 Motherboard Memory: G.Skill Trident Z 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory Storage: SanDisk SSD PLUS 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive Video Card: MSI GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB GAMING Z Video Card Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case Power: EVGA BR 500 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply OS: Windows 10 Pro OEM 64 Bit

I'm in America, and pc part picker puts it at about $1600, within my budget.

Thanks again, to anyone who can take the time to help me out! I really appreciate it.

Don't know what to do with my I/O shield and literally the only thing stopping me from building my first build

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 08:19 AM PDT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxvyImOF40I Here's a quick video of the problem of my IO Shield

Basically it's always one of the short ends of the IO shield that just isn't able to go through. It seems that my case slot is just a tad small or the IO shield is too big. People are telling me just push harder but that would do nothing except make it worst.

Do I need pliers or something to bend the lips or something just so it can finally fit in? Should I tape it or something stupid like that? Is there a way I can possibly get a new one? I don't know if there is anything wrong with it. This is my first build and really discouraging.

EDIT: I got it in but its bent and ugly. Whatever I guess. Then I just tried putting the mobo in and the screws wouldnt reach all the way in so I tried switching them and now 2 just keep spinning when I try to get them out and I can't pull them out with anything either. This sucks

How much do thermals actually matter? (Basic cards vs premium cards)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:47 PM PDT

As a novice PC builder I keep seeing comments about this card is bad, pay more for a better one from a different company. From what I understand, the primary difference between identical cards and is going to be there noise and temperatures. Performance tends to be the same from what I have been told, or only a few % different.

In your opinion, is the extra $50-80 for a premium card worth it? How much do thermals play into your decision when it comes to PCs, are there significant drawbacks to cards running hot?

    Decent Gaming Setup? (First-timer)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:36 PM PDT

Hey guys! As the title says, I'm building my first Gaming PC. I've been a Xbox Gamer my entire life (nearly 15 years I think?) but recently I've made a few extra dollars and I've had some friends try to convince me to make the switch. I'm still on the fence about it, but I figured if I start the process I'd at least push myself in the right direction. I had my brother-in-law help me through the process.

So I'm entirely new to the PC gaming world. I'm going to post the specs on here and hope I can get a second set of eyes on what we agreed on. We had a $1000 dollar give or take kinda budget.

If you have any questions or concerns. Please use an ELI5 sentence structure, I have to google most of the parts to understand what they do still. (Very New)

PS about to hop on a plane, so don't think I'm ignoring comments.

    Specs:

    •AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor

•Scythe Mugen 5 PCGH Edition 43.03 CFM CPU Cooler

•MSI B450M GAMING PLUS Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

    •Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000
    Memory

•Seagate FireCuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive

•MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6 GB VENTUS XS OC Video Card

•DIYPC Zondda ATX Mid Tower Case

    •EVGA 650 W ATX Power Supply

    •Rosewill RNX-N250PCe PCIe x1 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter

Which is better EVGA or Gigabyte?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 11:41 AM PDT

I ordered a Gigabyte 2070 Super, but have had good luck with EVGA in the past. The Gigabyte is a 3 fan design which is nice. Is it worth cancelling and reordering or just keep it the way it is?

Free software for encrypted incremental backups to NAS?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 01:02 PM PDT

After building my new gaming PC, I converted my old PC into essentially a server, to run things like Plex, FTP, etc. I have a spare hard drive also that I want to use for backup purposes, in this server. I have network sharing set up for this drive, and have it mapped on my primary office/gaming PC.

My question is, what software should I use to set up automatic backups from my main PC to this NAS? I was thinking maybe something that can scan for changes every night at 3 AM, and perform an encrypted incremental backup.

Built a new PC, won't Boot

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:12 PM PDT

I'm using the Asus x570 f gaming with a ryzen 5 3600 and asus radeon rx 5700 xt.

All the rgb turns on, fans etc but nothing was happening on the monitor.

Board goes from orange dram to red CPU to a solid white VGA and then stays at white VGA. I've tried moving the ram around, taking the GPU out and putting it back in. The only thing I'm scared to do is take off the stock cooler and check under for the CPU bc of the thermal paste.

I'm not sure what is wrong with it to be honest and this is my first build so I'm halfway about to just hit up any place that might troubleshoot for me.

Edit: I plugged something in that I guess was missing, now the VGA light turns off after being white but nothing else happens.

    Brokeback GPU

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 12:56 PM PDT

I accidentally snapped a part off the back of my GTX 1080, which might be a resistor. The opposite side is a memory chip. Pictures: https://imgur.com/gallery/VToAgzv

After putting it all back together, I was able to boot back into Windows 10 and play Far Cry 5 for over an hour without issues. I also ran 3DMark's Time Spy and got good numbers.

Am a lucky mofo, or am I risking frying my machine if I just keep running with this?

Let me know if you would change anything or any general advice you might have for someone on their first build. Trying not to break $1100.
