General use linux (light gaming), $1000, USA, 14" Posted: 01 Sep 2019 07:49 PM PDT Looking to replace my lenovo t403s which is showing its age. Total budget $1200, less is better obviously. In USA. Weight is mildly important. Thinness is not. Prefer 13-14 inch, open to 15. Primarily going to be a linux box which I use for web browsing/media consumption, document editing and coding. Might install MTG arena, but no games more intense than that. No CAD, video or photo editing. Keyboard quality is important. SD card slot is a bonus. I'd also like the laptop to be repairable if something breaks / upgradeable. Not interested in machines with everything soldered to one board. Can put more cash into it if it will last 5+ years, up to ~$1200. [link] [comments] |
Going to college in October, in need of a laptop Posted: 01 Sep 2019 11:32 PM PDT Greetings everyone, I am going to college starting of in October and I am in need of a laptop. My bugdet is 635€($700). I don't seek a portable laptop as I should have almost always a socket available to charge it. The main purpose of it is uni work, gaming and watching tv shows so it'd be cool to run on a good resolution. Also, I do not mind buying sh laptops. In addition: What should I be looking for when buying a second hand? Should I rather aim for a newer generation i5 than an older i7? Thanks in advance reddit, suggest me a laptop. [link] [comments] |
Light Gaming laptop with a good battery for a student for around 1000$ Posted: 01 Sep 2019 07:02 PM PDT I am looking for a laptop for around 1000$, I have been looking for a week and I am pretty worried I am never going to narrow my choice. I am will be a university student so I am looking for a laptop I can do light gaming on for games like WoW, League of legends and so on, but also I would like to have good battery life and be of around maximum of 5 pounds weight. I've been looking and here in my country I can get many laptops that are heavy and with bad battery life with i7-9750, nvidia geforce 1650 and 8 gb ddr4 with good ssd for this money :/.

Posted: 01 Sep 2019 10:52 PM PDT Budget & Country: $600 ; US Form factor, battery, specs: The most important of these three is the battery life. While it doesn't have to last all day, it'd be nice not having to plug it in to charge after every single use. I do also tend to push for the best specs despite the fact that I'm downsizing, as I feel a bit nervous about a drop-off in speed or power if I downgrade to an i3 model for instance. My current processor and RAM is: Intel Core i7-4710HQ CPU @ 2.50 GHZ w/ 8 GB RAM. I know we're several generations further along now so perhaps my nervousness is being exaggerated? Form factor really doesn't matter, I prefer no touchscreen but I'd be open to trying a 2 in 1. Weight, Thinness and Screen Size: These are all incredibly important. I don't want anything bigger than 14." I'd also prefer less than 3.5 lbs, preferably closer to 3 lbs. I can't take my current laptop anywhere with how big it is, it's just annoying, and takes up too much space in my house, especially being on the charger all the time. This is also why I'd highly prefer an SSD over a hard drive. OS: I'd prefer Windows. Activity: One of my current hobbies is evaluating stocks. I don't actively invest or trade at all, I just like researching and performing analyses for fun. So I'll need to run Excel, along with a couple of chrome windows open and Thinkorswim! or another research application. I also will be doing very very light gaming, pretty much just Football Manager and old Star Wars games from time to time. Since these games aren't really that heavy I'd prefer to run them as close to 60 FPS as possible but if not, it's not a huge deal. Other than that, just browsing and streaming sports. Specific requirements: A backlit keyboard is something I'd really like, as I use my computer in the evening quite often. It's not a deal breaker so to say, but it is highly preferred. Backstory: My college computer, a refurbished HP Envy 15, is about 5-6 years old now from my purchase date, and while it's surprisingly still quite powerful, it holds a charge for about 45 minutes. Now I know I could easily just replace the battery and extend its lifespan a bit, but I'm fed up with it for just being too big, weighing too much, and getting overheated so easily. I know I have a tight budget for what I want, I'm just torn and not sure what to compromise on. Hopefully this community can help me with that! For a start – I was looking at an HP 14 Laptop i5-8265U from Costco for $580. Another option I stumbled upon was the Acer Swift 3 i5-8250U from the Labor Day sale at Acer for $560 after the discount. Recommendations for my first personal laptop? Posted: 01 Sep 2019 10:39 AM PDT I need an all rounder, that will be good for school work and gaming alike. I don't plan on running anything too heavy in terms of games, something like Minecraft, TF2, maybe pubg. I don't expect crazy performance, it will be my first laptop, and I have a budget of £750 ($910) What would you guys recommend? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Best laptop for General use under 800-1000 pounds sterling? Posted: 02 Sep 2019 12:51 AM PDT I will be using the laptop for university. I would need to be able to do all the usual stuff, plus some physics modelling, programming and light to medium gaming. I would like it to be of good build quality and have a decent sized display. Having as long lived battery life as possible considering the above. Weight is not too much of a factor for me though obviously the lighter the better. I would like it to last as long as possible and also the cheaper the better obviously though I don't mind spending more if the improvement is massive. [link] [comments] |
Best 2-in-1 13 - 15.6 inch [Canada] around $1000? Posted: 01 Sep 2019 11:25 PM PDT Hi there, I'm a student heading into first year engineering. I'm getting a little scholarship money soon, so I've decided to splurge a little on a new laptop. I'd like -a touchscreen/2-in-1 -good enough to run modern games at playable (~30) fps at lowest settings -solid battery life The RAM and SSD I can always upgrade later on, so that isn't a major issue. Is an IdeaPad S340 worth it at this price? Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:09 AM PDT I found a good deal on a local PC shop. It's a Lenovo IdeaPad S340 with i5-8265U, 8GB RAM, 512GB ssd, 1TB HDD and an MX250 with 2GB Vram and an IPS screen. Is it worth for 640€? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2019 11:05 PM PDT I'm trying to look for a good laptop with a pretty low expense. I don't mind too much the cost but the lower the better i would say. I'm looking for a laptop for gaming and editing. I'll be using this for gaming, editing pictures and videos alongside being used for school so durability and being able to be used constantly without starting to slow down and basically break down after a good while of using it. Thank in advance for any help. My bugdet is around $1000 really close to that. Maybe my highest would around $1200 or $1300 [link] [comments] |
[Buying help] Laptop for school Posted: 02 Sep 2019 02:30 AM PDT So I need a laptop for school next year and I was thinking about getting a Surface Go with 4GB of ram because I have a small budget and having a touch screen with a stylus will help because I'm doing digital art (photoshop) next year, but I was thinking would it be worth it to get an older or used surface pro? Or maybe if anyone has any other suggestions for a great budget laptop for school? Thanks. * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $600 - $700AUD - Australia * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** would prefer 2 in 1 form factor - battery life needs to be at least 4 hours - at least 4 GBs of Ram * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** don't really mind weight but would prefer to have a one that is on the lighter side because I'll be carrying it around all day. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Bigger than 10 inches * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** maybe some light photo editing * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Not gaming on this device * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** touch screen would be great - would like decent build quality (I'm a bit clumsy) - decent keyboard * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** None right now [link] [comments] |

HP Envy vs Huawei Matebook vs Dell XPS Posted: 02 Sep 2019 01:46 AM PDT So I'm starting a programming degree next week and just pulled the trigger on the HP Envy - i7 8565U - 8gb - 512 ssd - Nvidia mx250 2gb. I'm torn between this, the huawei matebook 13 i7 (UK version without the nvidia graphics) and the dell xps 13 i5 8265u - 8gb. I went with the HP just due to the price, but I would be willing to pay the extra for the XPS or swap for the matebook if there's a significant increase in performance- the main things I'll be doing are programming related with some web browsing/netflixing on the side. Has anyone got any experience with these laptops or have any alternatives? Particularly who is UK based as the specs seem to vary from the US versions. Cheers guys [link] [comments] |

Best laptop for editing out of these 3? Posted: 02 Sep 2019 01:05 AM PDT |
Really having a hard time between these 4 "Thin and light and powerful gaming laptops" Posted: 02 Sep 2019 12:58 AM PDT I'm planning to order from HIDevolution. As my config on all laptops, I'm getting fujipoly pads + grizzly repaste and replacing the traditional SSD to HP EX950 2TB. I'm a student, I'm buying this with my own money. I currently own an MSI GS65 8RF, and it thermal throttles pretty bad even with cooling pad + repaste. I heard the 9SG (next-gen chassis vs mine, + RTX 2080 has better thermals and more heat pipes.) I want good thermals and long battery life. I'm leaning more towards the Alienware M15 R2, but there aren't much reviews out there and also looking at Dave2D's video, I'm not sure if he repastes all of his laptops when doing to temps or not, and I'm indecisive. I'm having a hard time deciding between four laptops, price doesn't really matter to me, they all come out at 3400~3800 USD. Razer Blade Advanced 15, FHD 240Hz screen, 9750h with RTX 2080 Max-Q Alienware M15 R2, FHD 240Hz screen, 9750h with RTX 2080 Max-Q MSI GS65 9SG Stealth, FHD 240Hz screen, 9750h with RTX 2080 Max-Q Gigabyte AERO 15 (Classic-YA-F75AMP), FHD 240Hz screen, 9750h with RTX 2080 Max-Q I've had experience with all of them except the Aero 15. I've had the Razer Blade 14 back in 2016, which had terrible thermals and EXTRA THICC screen bezels. I've owned the Alienware 13 R3 back in 2017, which also had bad thermals and continuous BSOD + key was falling off. I currently own the MSI GS65 8RF, bad thermals, but I do love the keyboard on this. Never tried the Aero 15, but it's a bit ugly tbh. I'm leaning more towards the M15 R2 > Razer Blade 15 > MSI GS65 > Aero 15. But I really can't decide. I will absolutely be undervolting and like I said it will be repasted and change the thermal pads by HIDevolution. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |

What's a good budget laptop for Office use Posted: 01 Sep 2019 10:47 AM PDT An elementary teacher is going to be using it. Ms Office. Word, Excel, Powerpoint. Budget is 400 to 600 dollars. I know it's pretty cheap but this is for very basic usage. No gaming. Just for mainly office work and WiFi. If games had to be installed, they would be low profile titles like Stardew Valley or Plants vs Zombies. A decent screen size, long battery life, weight and something that's just genberally comfortable to use are priority over stuff like a type C port or a fingerprint reader or a detachable keyboard like a Surface (al though they'd be nice to have) Optical Drive unneeded. Has to run Windows 10. I build PCs so I can understand spec sheets, but I'm totally unfamiliar with the laptop models and stuff. Thank you very much [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop for school/gaming Posted: 01 Sep 2019 04:35 PM PDT
$1400. USA.
2 in 1 not required. Best specs that I can get if possible. Good battery life preferable.
Nothing too heavy, preferable on the thinner side.
Windows.
14" or 15.6". 15.6 preferably.
Just gaming and schoolwork.
At the moment, my laptop can't handle a lot of games so I mostly just stick to League of Legends, Stardew Valley, and Minecraft. I'd like to be able to play those games at a much higher FPS; Would prefer 100+ FPS if possible. I'd like to try other games such as Dead by Daylight, PUBG, Overwatch, etc. Medium-high settings or greater.
Build quality is pretty important.
I don't know too much about specs, laptops, etc. Hopefully my preferences and requirements aren't too crazy for the price. I'm interested in the new Razer Blade 15 but I'm not too sure what the competition is like for other laptops. https://www.razer.com/gaming-laptops/razer-blade. Would like something somewhat discrete, and definitely not something that will overheat or have a loud fan. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
