Insane drop in user acquisition since July

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:59 PM PDT

I have got a sudden drop in user acquisition in July and my installation rate dropped from a fairly stable 300-700 daily installations to around 40 for my productivity App. That is insane. My Android crash statistics are good, I haven't changed anything, and It's impossible that after 2 years all the people lost interest in my app at same time.

Searching on Google I have seen that some indie game developers have experienced something similar in June 2018.

What the hell is going on? Do they have done others dumb changes in ranking system again?

Some other developer has experienced something similar this year?

Any tip\hint on the possible cause and the way I can restore the normal behavior?

Android development is becoming a real nightmare between Gradle support bugs , continuous API changes and deprecations that broke things and weird Google Play ranking behavior.

    I am tired of Android...

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 12:35 PM PDT

I am an Android developer for years. I loved it at the beginning but after that i started to hate it. At launch of lollipop i was hopeful for meaningful animations. They showed us cool animations, cool demos but what we got is awful.

For example you want to make a shared element transition. So you follow the instructions and it works right ? F*ck no. There are tons of bugs like views teleporting, views going to wrong coordination. After hours of debugging you finally did it and it still looks awful, why ? Because you are creating a new activity and it's an expensive operation so your animation need to stutter at first launch and it's driving me crazy.

Even google can't make good animations. For example play store. With last update they really screwed it up. Animations don't exists. Look at that shit, is it good user experience for you google ? The entering animation is different from exiting animation. Who designed that sh*t

    https://youtu.be/80O9v6ET934

I am not hopeful with fuchsia too. Google will screw it up. We will always have to choose between prison as iOS and laggy, buggy hell as Android. At least on iOS you can animate views easily. I think I will switch to iOS as soon as possible.

App Content Rating - App Rejected

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:00 PM PDT

I have been submitting app content ratings for my apps.

Since my apps appeal to all ages, I have selected all age groups.

One app was rejected while others were approved.

The email said it was because the app primarily targets children.

(From analytics, most of my users are adults)

If I have selected all age groups and my app shows child friendly ads and complies with all the guidelines, then why was it rejected???

Should I reapply and just select child ages?

    This is messed up.

Google will now officially take boat-load of time to approve new apps/updates to existing app

Google will now officially take boat-load of time to approve new apps/updates to existing app

This will be kinda semi-big post on Google's recent decision to make app approval process tedious, and how it affects small devs like myself.

They updated their "Publish an app" page, which previously said it'd take maximum of 2 days for apps to get approved. Now, the same page says the following thing.

    What the page says now.

    Now, here's the interesting thing.

I went through some of the latest post on this thread, and most of them say that it's been 7 days that their apps are submitted, but have not been approved.

Here's the thing, I have been on Play Store from past 2 years, (I don't have huge apps, the only big app I have right now has ~10K active installs (22K+ total). And, from the past 3 months (the time app is up), every single update takes more than 48 hours to get approved (and doesn't get approved until I contact them).

Now, recently I submitted an update to the same app on 26/08/2019 at 3:37PM, and it's 30/08 right now, and, I see no notification on "How long it would take" like mentioned in the image above (which shows 7 days timing thingy).

Snip from Play Console Android app which shows the timing of my last update

Now, here's how this shitty decision affects small devs like me.

    1. I made a mistake while uploading an update, in which I added very high resolution images (2000*2000) jpeg (I used Glide too), which were small in size (~160KB), which, due to their resolution crashed on some devices, now, I couldn't identify this problem early, because I tested it on latest mobiles that I use.
    2. I tried releasing an update for alpha testers before pushing it to production, surprisingly, it took more than 12 hours to get approved (they say it's instantly available to alpha testers), and then I was like f it, I'm just wasting my time, because it was a critical update, as my app is a Companion app for a game, and there were map changes, and users were rating poorly because they needed update soon.
    3. Well, then I played the waiting game, and update got approved after 48 hours, and the crashes started. My crash rate went to 6% well above the 1.9% bad behavior threshold (normally it's 0.3%-0.4% or less). And, my ratings went from 4.4 to 4.2
    4. And when I made the decision to revert to the old crash free app version because the latest one was buggy, it was already late, because there's no way to "Stop" the latest release or quickly upgrade the older version to the latest one by increasing its versionCode.
    5. Now, they've added "App stability" as a parameter in their Play Store algorithm, which I cannot maintain, because they took 2 f'in days to approve my update, so say bye bye to #1 position for the keyword, and I fell to #3-#4, and downloads went from ~300 per day to ~160 per day (I'm small, really small app developer)!
    6. Only way? Upload another update, and wait for 2 more days to get it approved.

Now that maximum the review time has gone up to 7 days, I'm pretty sure it's going to take 7 days for my app update to get approved, and that sucks.

If they're going to thoroughly review all the apps, why don't they increase their review staff? Why should a developer wait for 7 freaking days to give their users new features or simple bug fixes? Doesn't that degrade the user experience?

If it's going to take 3+ days for every single update to get approved, I'm quitting Android development altogether, and then convincing all the other junior devs I know to quit too (from my college which I recently graduated from) .

Feel free to comment down your thoughts if I'm wrong.

Google Play IARC rating influences AdMob CPM

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 06:11 AM PDT

I was playing with IARC rating for my app in Google Play and I noticed that my AdMob CPM dropped by 50% after raising minimum age in IARC rating. All went back to normal after I reverted IARC to 3+ age rating.

    Boom, you're welcome!

Is changing the app category a good idea?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 06:32 AM PDT

One of my app is going through massive decline in downloads recently (from 7k - 500 a day over the period of 3 months). It's in personalization category and it can easily fit in social category as well, no problem with the content. In this context is it a good idea to take the risk and change app category?

My apps are hidden from my developer profile, any ideas how to solve this?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:43 AM PDT

So I had the developer profile set up (the nice one, with profile picture and one featured app) and it was all working nicely, until yesterday I noticed that only my featured app was visible in addition to one free app below. Mind you, I have 4 other apps that should be there as well, but they were nowhere to be found.

Opening the Play Store app and searching for "pub:[my dev name]" sure enough shows all of my apps. Every app can also be found by its name. The only thing that isn't displaying all of my apps is the fancy pants developer profile page.

I went ahead and deleted the developer page hoping that clicking my name below the apps' names would revert back to "pub:[my dev name]", but now it just 404s. Maybe waiting 24 hours will make the change go live, I'll have to wait and see.

All of this has caused a very significant drop in revenue, all in one day, so I'm really desperate to get this resolved, but obviously Google doesn't respond.

Is it possible to monitor screen usage (time) of other apps?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:04 AM PDT

I want to try making a simple android app as a first project and was wondering if there is a way to monitor which app is in foreground, or how much screen time an app has had in the past 24 hours?

If it is possible, what should I use to develop something like this? I have experience with vue.js so was wondering if this is possible with vue native or react native

Should I still use a Service?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 12:25 AM PDT

There are periodic background processes in my kiosk-mode app (default launcher, only app running in the dedicated device) that are within several sticky Services, checked and "scheduled" through boolean checks and always-running threads. Most of them must run every few minutes so WorkManager isn't an option. Since the app is guaranteed to be running all the time and always on foreground, do I still need these processes to be on a Service?

Another thing that makes me doubt the necessity of Services in this case is that these processes don't really need to bind to certain events; they are started immediately as the app starts.

How can I know if my app is unintentionally appealing to children?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:20 AM PDT

I have already set my app age rating but reviewing the guidelines again got me kind of worried. Do you think my video or screenshots make it seem like it appeals to children? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.instantbits.cast.webvideo

    Thanks.

Edit: To clarify, I'm worried about the little dudes at the bottom of my screenshots. I'm worried because of the samples near the bottom here https://developer.android.com/google-play/guides/families

Edit: This is the part I'm worried about as I've already selected 18+:

If you have said that older users are your target audience, Google Play may double check your marketing to ensure you aren't marketing your app to children. Using regulatory guidance as a starting point for our review guidelines, we look at things like app icons, screenshots, and wording on the store listing page to make our assessment. If your marketing appeals to kids more than you intended, we will ask you to change your age target and/or change your marketing.

    Android canvas animation

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 08:11 AM PDT

Is it possible to animate only a single view on canvas. For example, if I am drawing a custom view on canvas which has 5 elements, and I want to animate one of the elements every 5 seconds without redrawing the other 4 elements would that be possible.
Reading over various SO questions and blogs, it seems that the canvas has to be redrawn every time.
Would that be a recommended approach or would that drain the battery on phone and watch?

Anyone else having difficulties with the new 'Target audience and content' settings?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:14 AM PDT

My app is suitable for all ages, including the ads that are shown. I set the target age to 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, and 18+, but I received an update rejection because my store listing contains 'References to the app being suitable for children.'. My app is suitable for children so I'm a little bit confused. Anyone else experiencing the same issues?
